Clovis is Favorite to win Southeast Power District
By Kyle Henderson

11. Clovis
1710920.jpg

The Clovis Wildcats went 6-6 during the 2014 season beating Sandia and losing to Mayfield 35-21 in the quarterfinals. District 4-6A Champs again and the Little Rebel is back tucked safe away in the gymnasium. You have to like Clovis going into the season each year because of their coaching staff, southern style of play, and community support, not to mention that they have some multi-year returners that are going to be top players in New Mexico. Returning at quarterback is Daulton Hatley who threw for 1,255-yards and 12 touchdowns as a junior, Hately really impressed us during his showing at the Eastern New Mexico Camp held in Cleveland. Also returning is Micah Gray who ran for 1,148-yards and 18 touchdowns as just a sophomore. Then you have 6-foot-4, 210 pound Roland Chavez at tight end who has an offer from New Mexico State as well as Tucker Dobbs at receiver who has an offer from Eastern New Mexico. Their skill guys are as good as anyone, but they graduate a ton of linemen, which is concerning heading in. The home opener at Leon Williams against Goddard is just a few weeks away.

13. Alamogordo
1711282.jpg

If we had to rank the top 7-on-7 teams this summer, Alamogordo would likely be ranked No. 1. Their play this summer has been talked about numerous times right here on NMPreps.com. A big reason for that is their skill position players (who all return for the most part) have increased their strength in the weight room and who are being coached up by Dale Hooper now in year three as Head Coach. Remember, just back in 2013 the Tigers went 1-9, last year the Tigers went 5-5 and beat teams like Los Lunas, Valencia, played Mayfield close for a few quarters, beat Deming, and lost to Artesia in a shootout 48-41. Though they did not win a district game, they played Hobbs and Carlsbad tight in the final games of the season. Returning is Quarterback Kyle Hooper who threw for over 2,500-yards as a sophomore, 6-foot-3, 190 pound receiver Julian Segura who has looked like Megatron this summer (pictured and also has an offer from Eastern New Mexico), Hunter Graham has shined all over the field, and Marcello Barrientoz is yet another name to keep tabs on. We're not sure who is returning up front, but plan to stop by Alamogordo later on this summer to get an up-close look at Alamogordo, a team that everyone seems to think is a 6A sleeper heading into 2015.

15. Hobbs
1712835.jpg

Pictured is Hobbs Defensive Linemen Adrian Mackey (White Shirt)
The Hobbs Eagles missed the playoffs during the 2014 season going 4-6 under Charles Leghorn, but have already again made big waves in summer time 7-on-7 passing leagues. Just a week ago they won the annual Eastern New Mexico 7-On and return a good mix of skill position players along with good offensive and defensive linemen. Returning at quarterback for a second straight year is Isaac Amaya who is a dual threat quarterback that can make the big throw, he’s look good during the summer time. Watch for their home run hitter in the backfield Jeremy Padilla at 5-foot-10, 180 pounds, other skill position players include: Devin Beard at receiver, Aaron Compton at receiver, and Cason Clay. Compton and Clay showed out during the recent NMPreps Elite Combine. Up front they return Chris Kuykendall and on defense watch for stud defensive linemen Adrian Mackey who also impressed during the NMPreps Elite Combine. Guy Rossy Tippy returns as does Brevin Thompson. Hard not to like going into each season, now it’s about execution and winning games. They open with Mayfield to kick off the season.

23. Carlsbad
Yes Carlsbad is ranked in the preseason top 25 despite winning just two games in 2014. The reason: Gary Bradley is their head coach. We’re not saying Carlsbad is going to just run the district and make a deep playoff run, but Bradley has proved he can win and while Carlsbad needs to turn things around, a good foundation is already is place in a City that loves their football. The Cavemen will likely head to the triple option, which is good considering Junior to be Quarterback Jonah Leyva can run some. They graduate a ton of skill position players, so it’s unclear at this point who their featured backs are and how much they’ll even throw the football this year. Now while Carlsbad lost 8 games, remember they beat Hobbs and Alamogordo at the end of the season.

Mayfield, Las Cruces, Onate will all battle for the District 3-6A Title
By: Kyle Henderson of NMPreps.com

Rankings based off Preseason Top 100 Rankings

2. Mayfield
1714864.jpg

Our staff has seen Mayfield a few times this summer and it’s hard to believe, but these guys look as good or even better than the 2014 team talent wise. Saying this team who hasn’t even played a game is better than last year’s team that went 11-2 reaching the 6A title game is a big stretch, considering they lost UTEP Commit Kavika Johnson at quarterback, however… While this team thrived off the abilities of Johnson at quarterback, the Trojans return a ton of talent and a lot of multi-year starters into 2015. The new quarterback will be Joeray Valencia and despite being just 5-foot-11 and 146 pounds, he’s a gamer and one that has been in the system playing behind Johnson the last three years. He’s experienced and while the Trojans don’t throw a ton, he can make the throw down field when needed. The Trojans are going to have a ton of weapons on offense starting with junior to be Isaac Vance who was the recent NMPreps Running Back MVP and who was just offered by New Mexico State. Vance is a 4.4 back that ran for close to 1,000-yards in 2014 and scored 18 touchdowns as just a sophomore. Tight End Noah Pierce is their next big time tight end, Mayfield always has one of these guys, this year he’s going to be a match up nightmare as he can both block and make grabs over the middle standing 6-foot-2 and 228 pounds. Watch for receiver Gavin Swinson to make a splash this year, standing 6-foot-3 and 185 pounds he’s one of the better receivers we’ve seen this summer. Up front, the Trojans are led by Colton Evans the recent NMPreps Elite Combine MVP, he’s outstanding in pass coverage. Also watch for 6-foot-6, 240 pound Jalen Guerrero to be a key linemen for the Trojans this year. On defense the Trojans are anchored at backer by Louis Lombardi the NMPreps Linebacker MVP and in the secondary you have top prospects like Riley Folkman and Ethan Alvarado who each are gamers. The Trojans kick off the season against Hobbs in Watson Memorial then take on El Paso Franklin, followed by Carlsbad, then Alamogordo, then Eldorado, then Manzano. The Trojans have lost the last two big school state championship games by a total of 3 points, you know that’s weighing in on their minds.

4. Las Cruces
1714772.jpg

6-6 last year for Las Cruces? Down year? Not really, considering the Dawgs still beat teams like EP Montwood, La Cueva, Volcano Vista, and reeled off a win against Atrisco Heritage on the road. Their losses came against Rio Rancho twice (Class 6A state champ), Centennial (5A semifinalist), Artesia (5A state champ), Onate (6A playoff team), Mayfield (6A runner Up). It’s not like they got blown out of any of those games either. A ton of kids got playing time last year with big names going down, this year Las Cruces looks as potent as they’ve been in years past (state champs in 2012 and 2013) returning a ton of top level talent including Preseason NMPreps.com Mr. Football Candidate Kameron Miller at quarterback who recently was named the NMPreps Elite Combine MVP and just landed an offer from the new Mexico Lobos. While Miller (threw for 1,900-yards, 20 touchdowns in 2014) headlines the team, the Bulldawgs return a ton of talent as mentioned to go along: Sam Ellis at 6-foot-4, 180 stepped up big for Las Cruces a junior when Miller went down, a great athlete, look for Ellis to be a top target on the outside, Richy Terrazas is a shifty type receiver, Andrew Chavez is a guy who should have a breakout year and Brandon Baeza who will just be a sophomore is their next big thing on offense. Payton Ball is a name that could emerge in the running back fold and upfront junior to be Tristan Olson is going to be one of the best in the state at 6-foot-1 and 266 pounds (center). On defense Defensive Linemen Vincent Delgadillo is a stud, linebacker is a question mark at this time (will see Las Cruces during two-a-days) and their secondary will be loaded, wouldn’t be surprised to see Miller playing two-ways this year. They have a great schedule set up with El Paso Montwood week 1 followed by La Cueva and Volcano Vista. Expect the Dawgs to be climbing the state tournament tree yet again in 2015.

12. Onate
1714865.jpg

During the recent NMPreps Elite Combine, several Onate Knights performed at high levels and now that the program is fully under Head Coach Brent Jaquess (2nd year head coach), Onate should pose as a even tougher opponent in 2015 then in 2014 when they won 8-games including beating Manzano in the playoffs. Returning for the Knights are some talented underclassmen, actually Onate is likely one year away from being a top Las Cruces team (at least talent wise). 210 pound Linebacker Forest Mckee will make his varsity debut at Onate this year, he was the recent top junior at the NMPreps Combine posting 22 reps of 185 pounds and also running a 4.60 40-time. Also keep an eye on another incoming junior by the name of Matthew Young at 6-foot-2 and 220 pounds. Young displayed a lot of natural football instincts and ran an impressive 4.91 40-time. Other underclassmen to watch this include: Bryce Watters as an athlete (Cousin to Ricky Watters who played with the 49ers), Joseph Fielder at running back who had 16 reps of 185 pounds and also ran a 4.59 40-time, James Martin who had 19 quarterback sacks last year as sophomore, and Damien Tuton another 208 pound backer. This team could be very dangerous if they stay healthy and get some early season momentum.

24. Deming
1712747.jpg

Very impressive 2014 for the Deming Wildcats in Class 6A. Wins over Carlsbad, EP Cathedral, Silver, Santa Fe, and Gadsden put them in playoff contention. Now while they play in one of the toughest districts in New Mexico they didn’t just roll over and they do return some good talent into the 2015 season. Dante Urrea returns at quarterback and had a monster year in 2014 throwing for over 800-yards yards and rushing for just under 1,000-yards in 10-games. They have some good size with Daniel Perez at 6-foot-2, 255 pounds and Israel Ruiz at 6-foot-1, 245 pounds returning.

25. Gadsden
Head Football Coach Joe Vasquez enters his second year as Head Coach at Gadsden, the Panthers went 2-8 in 2014 beating Santa Teresa and Chaparral. The Panthers return quite a few starters into the 2015 season, watch for Josh Dias at WR, Alvaro Gonzalez at OL, Sergio Ramos at QB, Hector De And a at RB, Josh Hernandez at OL, and Joey Balderamma at LB. You’re going to see a much improved Gadsden team in 2015.

Patterson leads North Past South 97-87

North Defeats South 97-87 - Patterson Named MVP
By: Kyle Henderson of NMPreps.com

1717279.jpg

ALBUQUERQUE - Rio Rancho's Brady Patterson stole the show leading the 6A/5A North All-Stars past the South 97-87 Thursday Night in Albuquerque. Patterson scored 29 (unofficially), the play of the game happened when Patterson stole the ball from a South defender, the shook a south defender, then scored a bucket.

Plenty of talent during the game: from the North Deven Pearce out of Atrisco Heritage had a solid showing as did Carlos CdeBaca from Academy, Daniel Delgado from Del Norte, Zak May from Eldorado, Jared Garduno from Espanola, and Dylan Abott from Sandia.

The South was led by Carlsbad duo Trevin Ramirez and Shakur Smith who hit some monster 3's, Hobbs' Trey Nelson had an outstanding game, Omar Baez got his named called a ton, and Frank De La O did his thing from Roswell.

Recruiting News Starting June 1st - Top 60 Player Rankings

Please post nominations for our annual top 60 basketball player rankings. These rankings will follow after the 2015 season. We are open to feedback! Also send pics of the following listed prospects to nmpreps@yahoo.com

Please note: DO NOT post this information on social media sites. This information is for Premium Subscribers of NMPreps.com Only.

NMPreps.com's Top 60 Player Rankings

1. Marcus Williams - Cleveland - Class of 2016
Tremendous overall athlete, 6-foot-4 and close to 200 pounds. Will take over for Ryan Jones as one of the best out of Rio Rancho. Top football player as well, but basketball could be his forte. Look for him as a Guard/Wing/Forward in 2015.

2. Caleb Wroten - Sandia - Class of 2016
Standing almost 6-foot-9 and weighing 260 pounds Wroten is nearly the biggest center in New Mexico. As a junior he averaged 12.3 points per game and 10.7 boards. Should have another monster year and is yet another D-1 hopefully out of New Mexico.

3. Brendan Boatwright - Carlsbad - Class of 2017
Standing 6-foot-8 and 220 pounds, Boatwright is clearly a next level prospect. Not just his size, but the way he can get up and down the court, make moves inside, he's a top level prospect. As a sophomore he scored 11.4 points per game and 9.2 boards.

4. Johnny McCants - Onate - Class of 2016
6-foot-6 senior to be has had a dominating summer time and is likely one of the best high flyers in New Mexico. Seems his talent level ceiling is sky high and from what he hear, D-1 schools are calling coach Saul Perez non-stop.

5. Teton Saltes - Valley - Class of 2016
6-foot-6, 255 pound Saltes has had a monster summer of football recruiting. With schools like Oregon and Washington offering the big time defensive end, he loves basketball as well and is regarded as one of the state's top post players. Valley is going to have a dangerous squad as expected, but few know just how good Saltes is. His grandfather World B Free played in the NBA from 1975-1988

6. Cesar Molina - Centennial - Class of 2016
One of the top guards in the State of New Mexico who was a 1st Team All-State member of 2014/2015. Great handles, clutch, everything you want in a senior returning.

7. Joe Saterfield - Centennial - Class of 2017
6-foot-2, 170 point shooting guard that dazzled spectators during the 2015 state basketball tournament as just a sophomore. Has the uncanny ability to take over a game.

8. DJ Bustos - West Las Vegas - Class of 2017
6-foot-3 junior to be. Ask around to those that have seen Bustos play and they'll tell you the same: He is worth the hype. Comes from a big basketball family and already looks like a next level guy.

9. David Cromier - Volcano Vista - Class of 2016
Not sure how many know about 6-foot-4 David Cromier out of Volcano Vista, but his upside is huge and is one of the top players in District 1-6A returning which speaks volumes.

10. Bobby Tapia - Sandia - Class of 2017
Class of 2017 is clearly loaded and Tapia is one prospect who got better and better as the season ended. He lit up the scoreboard in the state tournament. Quite an exciting player.

11 A. Richie Lucero - Grants - Class of 2016
6-foot-5, 190 pound junior wing that scored 17.0 points per game during the 2014/2015 season. Paired with Matt Vail and Bradley Hatten, the trio could make a serious run at the title.

11 B. Marshall Moore - Rio Grande - Class of 2016
6-foot-1, 160 pound guard that did work for Rio Grande as a junior. Underrated player that gets overshadowed because he plays at Rio Grande, very dangerous.

12 A. Pierre Swain - Hobbs - Class of 2016
6-foot-3, 180 pound Pierre Swain is one of the top strong forwards returning in New Mexico and will be a house hold name in Hobbs come the season. Could eventually by a top 5 player in New Mexico.

12 B. Jordan Leake - Hope - Class of 2016
6-foot-2, 170 pound Class of 2016 prospect that shined as a junior for Hope. With him returning, Hope is going to (Guess again) be running for the title.

13. Mike Uribe - Las Cruces - Class of 2016
5-foot-8 point guard that has more than handles, some of the best instincts come game time and is a major threat to any defense. Will be a three year starter at Las Cruces.

14. Gabe Bump - Albuquerque - Class of 2016
6-foot-1 returning senior for Albuquerque that made play after play all year long for the Bulldogs. Kid can truly do it all.

15 A. Roland Chavez - Clovis - Class of 2016
6-foot-4 returning post for Clovis. Not sure why this team didn't win more games considering the talent level. Chavez has a football offer from New Mexico State.

15 B. Jacob McNeely - Volcano Vista - Class of 2016
6-foot-0 guard that returns to the Hawks line up which will have plenty of experience into the 2015/2016 season. McNeely can beat you in the clutch.

16. Drew Wassana - West Mesa - Class of 2016
6-foot-2, 180 pound forward/wing prospect that had a very solid junior season. With Zach Schroer graduating, Wassana should be the big man on campus.

17. John Paul Garcia - Tucumcari - Class of 2016
5-foot-10, 145 pound shooting guard John Paul Garcia will be a three year starter entering the 2015/2016 season and has continued to display that he is one of the best in New Mexico. Should be due for a huge year.

18. Bradley Hatten - Grants - Class of 2016
Hatten is listed at 6-foot-6 and 300 pounds. He’s had a productive summer and is one of the top multi sport athletes at Grants High School. Could be a next level football or basketball player.

19. Eric Coca - Capital - Class of 2016
Coca shined as a junior starting for Capital High School and we’ve had several reports come in this summer that he should be one of the best in the district in 2015/2016.

20. Adam Cook - Cleveland - Class of 2017
6-foot-4, 210 pound sophomore that will play forward for Cleveland. The Storm has quite a few players in the top 30, Cook is their next big time prospect hoops and basketball wise.

21. Matt Vail - Grants - Class of 2017
Was not really on our radar until late in the year where he blew up in the state tournament. Grants is going to have some great talent, Vail is def one to keep tabs on.

22. Juan Hurt - Rio Rancho - Class of 2017
Had an outstanding year at Rio Rancho, especially in the early season helping the rams reel off some big time victories. He along with Clay Patterson should be quite the duo.

23. Daniel Amador - Roswell - Class of 2016
Another key part to the Roswell Coyotes was Amador who shined especially late in the year. Really looking forward to seeing him mature as a player.

24. Aaron Bean - Atrisco Heritage - Class of 2016
Not many know or talk about Aaron Bean, but he is likely the best overall athlete at Atrisco Heritage this year (pretty good for a school with more than 2,500 kids).

25. Henry Hattis - Cleveland - Class of 2016
6-foot-7, 265 pounds and while he is the state’s top football prospect, he is also a very good basketball player down low. Still working out with the basketball team over the summer, which tells us he is going to play.

26. Tomas Cano - Gadsden - Class of 2016
Had a big junior season at Gadsden and is one of the most underrated guards in New Mexico.

27. Chris Mesquita - Roswell - Class of 2017
Had a productive sophomore season for the Coyotes and will enter this year as one of the top returning players in the district.

28. Noah Santistevan - Valley - Class of 2016
Good size at 6-foot-1 and 200 pounds and one who can crash boards and will def keep the Vikings in the mix come this next season.

28. Gabe Ortega - Cleveland - Class of 2016
6-foot-2, 190 pound guard returning to the 2015/2016 season for the Storm. IF he plays basketball (Big time football prospect) he should be among one of the breakout seniors for this season.

30. Nick Lopez - Hobbs - Class of 2016
Rising senior out of Hobbs High School who should be a member of the starting 5 during the 2015/2016 season.

31. Colton Lowley - Gallup - Class of 2016
Though the Bengals lose their coach, they return some key talent from last year including Lowley who shined during the state tournament. He is a 6-foot-2 guard.

32. Marcus Flores - Espanola - Class of 2016
Standout multi sport athlete at Espanola that should play a key role in their 2015/2016 season.

33. Corey Noel - Las Cruces - Class of 2016
Multi sport athlete at Las Cruces that started in 2014/2015 for the Dawgs. 6-foot-0 guard, that is due for a breakout season. Also a key linebacker/running back on the football team.

34. Justin Houghtaling - Artesia - Class of 2016
Now listed at 6-foot-6, Houghtaling averaged 7.0 points and 7.0 boards last year as a junior. He's also on the state's top 5 quarterbacks.

35. Bronte Staugaard - Portales - Class of 2016
The 6-foot-0, 165 pound guard is a lights out shooting and just an all around great player. Scored more than 30 a few times last year. Also, one of the state's top running backs.

36. Mike Chambers - Magdalena - Class of 2016
6-foot-1 guard that was a key member of their 31-0 state title run. Scored 15.4 points per game and pulled down 6.8 rebounds per game.

37. Dalton Rice - Mesilla Valley - Class of 2016
6-foot-6, 210 pound post/center that could be a top 25 guy or even higher after our next evaluation period. Big future for this guy.

6-foot-8, 215 pound junior center that really shined towards the end of the season. Moves well for his size.

5-foot-10 junior guard that came along way since his sophomore season. Expected to be in the starting line up again this coming year.

49. Dominic Montano - Escalante - Class of 2016
Likely the top athlete overall at Escalante in the Class of 2016. Star football player and also scored 9.6 points per game and averaged 2.8 assists per game.

50. Johnny Plowman - Lordsburg - Class of 2017
6-foot-1, 200 pound rising sophomore that is one of the few prospects in New Mexico to be ranked in the Football top 100, baseball top 100, and basketball top 60.

51. Jacob Esquivel - Lordsburg - Class of 2017
5-foot-11, sophomore that was named team captain this last season. Good sized guard and just a terrific athlete overall.

5-foot-7, 140 pound guard that got a ton of minutes as a junior during the 2014/2015 season.

Didn't have the best year numbers wise, but was a very good defensive player.

55. Nate Phipps - Texico - Class of 2018
6-foot-3, 220 pound freshman that got minutes for the Wolverines, should be a guy to keep tabs on in all sports.

56. Cade Banard - Melrose - Class of 2018
Just a freshman and put up 20.1 points per game this year and averaged 8.5 rebounds. Another Barnard to keep tabs on.

57. Gavyn Quiroz - Hagerman - Class of 2016
Averaged 10.9 points per game of game for the Bobcats during the 2014/2015 season

58. Estevan Romero - Springer - Class of 2017
Helped the Red Devils to a 23-6 season, key part of their line up. 6-foot-0 Class of 2017 prospect.

59. Tyler Ferguson - Tucumcari - Class of 2016
Will be an incoming senior shooting guard for the Rattlers. Very good multi sport athlete, also quarterback of the football team.

60. Simon Gonzales - Hondo - Class of 2017
Sophomore who started for the Eagles who went 28-3 this year. 5-foot-10 point guard.

District 2-6A Is Wide Open Entering The 2015 Season
By: Kyle Henderson of NMPreps.com

7. Sandia
Login to view embedded media The Sandia Matadors have remained one of Albuquerque’s top high school football programs over the years under Head Football Coach Kevin Barker who is entering his 23rd year as a Head Football Coach (Sandia/Manzano). In the past 10-seasons, the Matadors have reached the playoffs 8 out of 10 times, reaching the finals in 2012. “Our seniors are pretty darn good and have led all the way through our spring and summer workouts. We’re led by Seniors Jimmy Gallegos, Dominic Baca, Jeremiah Loya, and Isaiah Lowery. We return 11 starters overall and we’re excited about the 2015 season,” said Head Sandia Football Coach Kevin Barker. Continue Reading Our Exclusive Preview On Sandia Here

8. Eldorado
Login to view embedded media An always formidable opponent from Albuquerque is Eldorado who has reached the playoffs 7 out of the last 9 seasons. 2014 was a special team, finishing the regular season 9-1 led by Michigan Blue Chip Recruit Quarterback Zach Gentry. While the Eagles graduate their quarterback, 4 out of their 5 linemen, and a handful of defensive players the Eagles once again should remain a top tier high school football team, just with some lesser known names returning for 2015. “I think when you have a program with tradition, kids want to win. These seniors want to win, just like last year’s seniors, and hopefully they continue their bond this year,” said Head Eldorado Football Coach Charlie Dotson entering his 8th year at the helm. 14. Manzano
Login to view embedded media The Manzano Monarchs have reached the big school classification playoffs in the last 6 of 7 seasons. Head Coach Chad Adcox has been with Manzano since 2003 and took over as Head Coach for Aaron Ocampo in 2012. Entering his 4th year as Head Coach at Manzano, Adcox has kept Manzano is the big school mix, but with declining numbers at Manzano getting past yearly bigs like Cleveland, Mayfield, and their district has been a continued struggle. In fact, since 2012 Manzano is 2-8 against district opponents. They graduate a good mix of linemen and skill guys, but their younger group coming up is very talented. “We got some new names like: Orlando Perez, Jordan Byrd, and Antonio Padilla, and skill wise overall I liked the way we competed at the UNM 7-On. It’s all about learning right now in the summer time, for right now I think we are where we need to be,” said Manzano Head Football Coach Chad Adcox. Full Manzano Monarch Preview Here

16. La Cueva

Pictured is La Cueva Defensive Back Lucas Silver
The Bears are a tough team to gage going into the season for many reason: One is they graduate a ton of seniors, but again it’s La Cueva they always seem to re-load and be a force to deal with from the Metro Area. The Bears won an impressive 8-games last year before losing to Mayfield in the quarterfinals. Returning this year is: Lucas Silver who should be a two-way star and one who impressed at the NMPreps Elite Combine recently, you also have Noah Hill and despite entering the season coming off a knee injury, he is regarded as one of their top players. Not sure if Athlete Jonathan Stroman is going to play this year, but he could be a next level guy in both football and in baseball, young guns include: Josh Woisin at backer as well as Derek Loidolt. They seem to be a team that is young heading in, it will be interesting to see how things unfold for the Bears.

59. Highland
The last time Highland won a football game was on October 10th of 2013. Over the last two years the Hornets are 1-19 and went 0-10 during the 2014 season under first year Head Coach Stacy Washington. 6-foot-4, 190 pond Dominic Johnson returns at quarterback.

Pre-Season Preview Boys Class 5A

Here is my attempt at a coherent and legitimate breakdown of boys class 5A. I dont know much about certain regions but will give it my best shot. Please feel free to disagree and chime in. If I left someone out or if there has been a shake up somewhere please share.

Best of the Bunch - Alb Acad, SPX, Farmington
The two privates will probably end up being the top 2 come playoff time and in the final. We all know that they simply reload each year. AA brings back a stacked team, with the 8th grade, now freshman phenom J Baca leading the attack. SPX gets a possible upgrade at coach with SPX legend AJ Herrera taking over. Farmington, well they always have just some of the biggest kids on the field, but something happens on the tight fields at the APS complex and they havent cashed in since the 2011??? title.

Contenders: Roswell, Los Lunas, Capital, Centennial
Each of these four programs will post 14-17 win seasons. They will have solid predistrict records. Two of them, Roswell & Capitol will romp through their districts. Los Lunas & Centennial should be the top two in District 3 but that is the district that had 5 teams make the post season, barring any surprises they should finish 1-2 with the other schools battling for 3-4-5.

Dark Horses - Lovington, Chaparral, Santa Teresa, PV/Aztec
  • Lovington is a 2nd year program. They actaully beat Roswell last year and made the playoffs. Depending on what they bring back, they could be a low seed once again in post season.
  • PV/Aztec are hard to read, you hope one of them can challenge Farmington but their predistrict schedules dont really hold up to scrutiny come seeding & selection, that might actually be what hold Farmington back come tourney time.
  • STHS/Chapa - Chapa loses TONS of talent and this might be a small rebuilding year, but dont count them out. They could still win 10-12 games and snag a win vs Los Lunas & Centennial. Santa Teresa brings back a large junior class. They might be a year away for claiming the district title, but they could hold their own and make a push to the APS complex.

CONCLUSION:
Everything says to pick a private school but they (AA or SPX) havent been able to keep the publics down. Alb Academy just has SO much on paper and its hard to pick against them. Prediction: Alb Academy
