Hobbs Soccer Job

We have a great opportunity with our girls varsity soccer opening for a coach to build on the successful foundation in place. The Varsity had a few really good seniors but otherwise a young team. The JV went 17-1 and soccer is big in the community. Lots of support in Hobbs for soccer, good facilities, good pay, good teaching schedule and soccer support in the community. Off Season: What are you reading

I just started re-reading The Heisman by Bill Pennington. Highlights the Heisman winners from 1935 to 2004. (how they grew up/accomplishments outside of football/impressive feats on the football field)

I'll add a few notes from time to time as I move through the book. Today I read on Herschel Walker who grew up in Wrightsville, Georgia. He had a total of 6 siblings and grew up poor as poor. At the age of 10 he began to do 3,000 sit-ups and 750 push-ups per day!!! He was 6-foot-2, 222 pounds and valedictorian of his class. During his senior year he ran for 3,167-yards and 45 touchdowns. College scouts moved to Wrightsville (literally) to recruit him. He signed with Georgia. His freshmen year he ran for 1,616-yards and helped the Georgia Bulldogs finish a perfect 12-0 winning their first National Championship Game. He tells Pennington in the book that still to this day he does 3,000 sit-ups and 750 push ups per day.

Gentry Update Regarding Hoops/Enrolling Early

"I'm not playing basketball. I don't want to risk anything, and I want to be as prepared as I can be for next step," Gentry said. "(Not playing) was always on my mind, but when I'm in football , I'm in football mode so I just decided. Instead, I'll just be lifting, working out, continuing to throw the ball."

Gentry Remains a top priority for the UT Staff

Sunday Spotlight - Week 4's Top Performers in New Mexico

6A Player of the Week
Danni Williams (Clovis), senior guard

The Texas A&M commit helped lead Clovis to a championship victory over No. 7 Las Cruces High in Rio Rancho's tournament. Williams only scored 15 points in the championship, but she dominated in the first two rounds by dropping 20 points against 5A Roswell High and 28 points against No. 3 La Cueva (Albuquerque, NM). Clovis (7-1) is surely in consideration with Cibola (Albuquerque, NM) for top team in 6A. Earlier in the week Williams scored a team-high 21 points in a win over 5A Lovington.

6A Team of the Week
Clovis, 7-1

Clovis came away from the Rio Rancho tournament with three solid wins. They beat the fourth-ranked team in 5A, Roswell, but also had wins against No. 3 La Cueva (Albuqueque, NM) and No. 7 Las Cruces High to remain undefeated to New Mexico schools. The Wildcats only loss on the season is to Wylie (Abilene, TX). Danni Williams was amazing this past week, averaging 21 points in the Wildcats' four wins.

5A Player of the Week
Natalie Zamora (St. Pius X (Albuquerque, NM)), senior guard

Zamora dominated against 6A schools Volcano Vista (Albuquerque, NM) and Albuquerque High. She scored 28 points against No. 5 Volcano Vista then wrapped up the week by pouring in 35 points against No. 9 Albuquerque High. The Fairleigh Dickinson commit is one of the top players in 5A.

5A Team of the Week
Gallup, 8-0

Gallup is for real and may have overtaken Los Lunas High in this coming week's poll, regardless of their result from the Joe Armijo Classic (Alb. Academy). The Bengals began the week with a 36-point win against 4A Kirland Central. Gallup then won two games at a classic in Liberal, Kansas over the weekend. The Bengals beat Clinton (Oklahoma), and Hereford Texas to improve to 8-0. They are arguably the best team in the state, regardless of classification.

4A Player of the Week
Alex Groenewold (St. Michael's (Santa Fe, NM)), senior forward

Groenewold was instrumental in the Lady Horsemen's win over a very good Santa Fe High team that ranks as the fourth best team in New Mexico's top classification. She dropped in 20 points in the championship game over the host.

4A Team of the Week
St. Michael's (Santa Fe, NM), 3-2

St. Mike's bounced back from starting the season with two losses by winning the Capital City Invitational (Santa Fe High) against the host school. The Lady Horsemen improved to 3-2 with wins over 5A Belen, 5A Lovington, and 6A Santa Fe High. Lovington and Santa Fe High rank in the top ten of their respective classifications.

1A-3A Player of the Week
Abby Medlin (Tatum), senior forward

Medlin poured in 31 against the host in 1A Elida's tournament to help the Coyotes improve to 7-0 on the season. She had 16 points in the semifinal win against No. 2 Melrose.

1A-3A Team of the Week
Tatum, 1A, 7-0

Tatum had four wins this week: Dora, 1A Hondo Valley, Melrose, and 1A Elida. The Coyotes remain undefeated after winning 1A Elida's tournament, where they had impressive wins against No. 2 Melrose and No. 5 (in 1A) Elida. Abby Medlin and Kevyn Ferriera have been key players during Tatum's hot start to the 2014-15 campaign.
