Games this weekend

ABQ boys soccer fans will get a chance to see Las Cruces and Hobbs this weekend. Las Cruces is in town to play Volcano Vista today and La Cueva tomorrow. Hobbs visits Eldorado today and Atrisco Heritage tomorrow. Mayfield will also be here to play Volcano Vista on Saturday.

Game of the day Saturday: Albuquerque High vs. Cibola.

Sandia Prep

Sandia Prep's amazing shutout streak ended yesterday in a 1-0 loss to Albuquerque High. The Sundevils had not allowed a goal in their first 7 games this season. They had also gone 21 games without a loss, dating back to last year. One streak that remains alive: Prep has gone 44 straight games without allowing more than two goals in a game (going back to 2012).

Stroman - USA Baseball

Jonathan Stroman was one of 12 players selected to the USA Baseball 17U Developmental Program. Stro was identified at the National Team Identification Series in Cary, NC last month.

Ben Rozenblum originally from ABQ and Altamont Little League but now lives if Florida was selected for the USA Baseball 14U Developmental Program.

There is another kid in this state that would of had a legitimate chance to be selected if he would of went to Cary. These guys that were selected are on the same "path' as Bregman and Swihart. One a multi millionaire and the other will be next July.

It is great for ALL of NM baseball when kids do these types of things and get recognized like this.

Boys rankings - 9/14

6A:

1. Cibola (6-0-1)
2. Las Cruces (6-0-3)
3. La Cueva (4-2)
4. Albuquerque (4-1-1)
5. Volcano Vista (4-2-1)
6. Hobbs (5-2-1)
7. Sandia (4-3)
8. Eldorado (4-3)
9. Rio Rancho (5-2-2)
10. Valley (3-3-1)

Hobbs takes a tumble following two losses, including one to Onate, and really has no signature wins. La Cueva may not have done enough to be No. 3 but beat Albuquerque High convincingly. Volcano Vista has wins over Sandia and Eldorado. Valley gets in at No. 10 based on a win over Eldorado and a tie with Volcano Vista, and their three losses have been tight games with Cibola, AHS, and Sandia. Onate would probably be No. 11. Gadsden and Clovis have nice records but miss out due to lack of quality wins.

5A:
1. Roswell (8-1)
2. Chaparral (7-2)
3. Academy (5-1-2)
4. Farmington (4-2-1)
5. Centennial (6-2-1)
6. Capital (6-1-1)
7. Santa Teresa (4-2-2)
8. Valencia (5-3)
9. Aztec (6-1-1)
10. Los Lunas (4-3-1)

Defending champ Roswell takes over the top spot. Academy moves up with a win in its own tourney, and also owns a win over Volcano Vista. Farmington had a great tournament at Academy, including a win over Centennial, which beat Capital. Aztec has a nice record but had a bad loss to Moriarty and lacks quality wins. Look out for Los Alamos, which has lost four close games against a tough schedule.

These are of course unofficial rankings. Comments welcome.

Cibola vs. Sandia Prep highlights big day in boys soccer

Interesting matchup today. Sandia Prep is no doubt one of the top teams in the state. They have not given up a goal in four games. Sandia Prep doesn't get many chances to prove itself against other top teams, but they get one today against 5-0 Cibola, which may be 6A's No. 1 team.

Also today: La Cueva-Atrisco Heritage, Eldorado-Volcano Vista, Chaparral-Gadsden, Rio Rancho-St. Pius, and Roswell-Clovis.
