Scoop: It's that time when we move our power rankings to 15-teams. We've added four new teams to the rankings - Cleveland, West Mesa, Organ Mountain, and Centennial. Mayfield, ranked 12th last week, falls out of the group after back-to-back losses last week.

Next: Farmington (17-5), Alamogordo (10-10)

No. 15 (11)Valley Vikings9-11 overall (1-3)

Scoop: The movement is all over the place in 4A basketball every week that we sit down and vote. This week the key losses are St. Pius X to Grants, Albuquerque Academy to Hope Christian and Valley losing four straight. The teams rising are Goddard starting a perfect 3-0 in district, Miyamura on a 6-game win streak, and Del Norte returning to form also on a 6-game win streak. Race to debate about the strength of district 4 and 5 could hurt their bids and become a nightmare as a road team in the first round.

Next: Lovington (14-7), Grants (9-10)

No. 14 (11)Hot Springs Tigers12-10 overall (1-1)
No. 15 (New)Cobre Indians6-13 overall (1-1)

Scoop: We're back after letting week 10 sort things out in 3A basketball. Movement could create some debate as the Horsemen of St. Michael's move into the 2-slot as they are riding a 4-game win streak and 6 of the last 8 games. They beat Raton, Sandia Prep, and Robertson. Another argument is at No. 14 with Hot Springs falling from 11th after being upset by Cobre, who earned votes to be No. 15. The re-match should help determine the rank of the two teams. Crownpoint on the rise inside the top-10 with a 6-game win streak.

LAST NIGHT - FEBRUARY 9TH

Make It-Take It: Tularosa and Lordsburg were close at the break, 35-26, before the Wildcats blew it open for a 70-45 win. The Tularosa Wildcats are now ranked number one in our 2A rankings for week 12.

Grine Line Airballs: Manzano (63-61 over Manzano), Rio Rancho (56-53 over Atrisco Heritage), and Sandia (78-70 over Eldorado). Although I will say this, I did think Rio Rancho would pull the upset but when it comes to line we go to the numbers, favorites, etc.

400: Manuel Romero the head coach of the Mora Rangers earned his 400th career win. He has coached at Penasco, Robertson, and now in his first season at Mora.

TODAY - FEBRUARY 10TH

Bernalillo (12-11) will play host to Albuquerque Academy (11-7) looking to avenge a loss a couple weeks ago, 63-59.

Melrose (13-6) suffered a recent loss and now looking to make an upset of third ranked Fort Sumner (11-3).

Showdown in Gallup, as the Bengals (GHS) currently sitting at 10-11 and looking to beat district leader Miyamura (11-11). Miyamura earned one of the bigger wins in school history topping Gallup earlier in January.

Valley (10-11) looking to build off some momentum as they head to Del Norte (11-10) to take on the second ranked Knights.

Battle of the ones. Laguna-Acoma (1-12) has been off in 2022 and now as they get back to games will travel north to take on the (1-14) Navajo Pine Warriors.

Carlsbad Hires Football Coach for 2022

They have made it official Oliver Soukup is the next head coach

Thunderstuck: Music in the Weight Room

Thunderstruck: Music in the Weight Room
By John Moore | NMPreps Football

Many years ago, at coaching school, a respected coach taught us about the importance of the weight room. At the end he threw in this line, “...and you should have loud music playing in the weight room, preferably with hard rock music.” He offered no reason for the hard rock music, just that hard rock music was important. Many coaches nodded along, including those from my school. I was not, nor am I now, a fan of hard rock. Oh, sure I listened to a lot of AC/DC in the day and I think there was a law that all 1984 graduates listened to Def Leppard and Scorpions, but otherwise, the music did nothing for me.

Years later, as an administrator, I walked by the weight room on my way to a meeting at the admin. building. Athletes were working out while loud rap music blared from the speakers. I couldn’t name the artist or the song, but the lyrics were explicit. I will wager that the music in weight rooms across the state have speakers blaring hard rock or rap most of the time. Hard rock and rap are edgy styles with tough mentalities – logical for football teams, but do we really understand what our students are listening to? What is the message in the songs that play? Does the music really provide a benefit to the workout?

One Italian study found a group listening to music gained one rep more at 60% over a group lifting in silence, but no gains were found in one rep max lifts. A second study showed similar small gains when athletes listened to their preferred music over those lifting while music played over speakers. These studies are limited in scope but music has its benefits. Logically, fast paced music (120 -140 beats per minute) tends to increase cardio output. Anecdotally, music makes us feel good. When we hear a song we like, endorphins increase, and the task does not seem so tedious. Music is a distraction to make the tedious task more enjoyable. But if coaching is necessary, we don’t want distracted athletes.

With all the noise in our lives, silence is underrated. Athletes not only need to listen to coaches’ instructions but need to listen to their own internal dialogue (Music and Weightlifting, Archibald). The fact is, kids don’t perform because a song came on, they perform because of an intrinsic motivation. We as coaches might enjoy an AC/DC song but consider this. If, when I was in high school, a 40-year-old song came over the speakers, I would do a set to “Don’t Sit Under the Apple Tree,” by the Andrews Sisters.

Coaches have much better things to do than to censor the music played in the weight room, but the messages in the weight room are crucial. Do you have rules of the weight room posted? And are they specific to your program? Do you have goal boards? Do you post records and personal gains by athletes or position groups? Do you post positive, motivational messages? We should do these things. We also need to eliminate negative, dark, messages often integral to music, especially in rap or hard rock music. Take the time to read what “Down With the Sickness” is about or what “Rock Bottom” says. I am not pearl clutching here, but would you play the weigh room playlist for parents or administrators? There is so much positive music in the world, we should use it.

So here is a proposal. Students enter the field house. Music is playing. A whistle sends athletes to the line. Coach makes an announcement, “Today’s music is courtesy of the O-line who showed the highest improvement on testing last week. Great job.” Players increase heart rate and go through stretching routine with music. Another whistle sends them to one of four stations. Music stops. Coaches are active during lifting stations, encouraging athletes. On the fourth station the music plays again at high volume. Coaches observe.

Some may scoff at playing different types of music in the weight room but why not expose athletes to great music. Do they know who Muddy Waters is or who Tchaikovsky is? A world champion Turkish power lifter famously listened to Willie Nelson for motivation. With the internet and young coaches being savvy about creating appropriate playlists, staffs can easily ensure using that music is a positive for our kids.

Daily Dimes: Wednesday, February 9th

LAST NIGHT - FERBUARY 8TH

Key Win: Bernalillo 58, Gallup 57. The Spartans could not afford a loss to a team outside the top-16. They also have been in the hunt for closing out a tight game. This keeps in the playoffs conversation.

In the Hunt: West Mesa 45, Farmington 44. The Mustangs earned another crucial district win and peaking at the right time. They are now in the top-16 when looking at the state tournament bids.

District Scramble: Valley 64, Hope Christian 56; Albuquerque Academy 63, Del Norte 61. Both Valley and Academy earned wins over teams currently ahead of them in the district standings. Each night this district continues to be a battle of some of the top teams in the classification having to battle in the same district. Valley needed a win and earned it.

Bubble Buster: Deming 54, Centennial 45. Centennial drops a crucial game when looking at the top-16 seeds in the 5A state tournament bracket watch. This loss could keep them on the outside when the brackets are released.

Tiger Way: Los Lunas 68, Santa Fe 62. The Los Lunas Tigers entered the season ranked inside the top-10 and then dropped some games early but now they are making a run into the state tournament with a chance at a top seed. This could wrap up another district championship.

Flexing: Bosque 62, Cottonwood Classical 46. The Bosque Bobcats are peaking at the right time and stay in the hunt to do battle with Sandia Prep for the district championship. In the same classification Robertson flexed in Santa Fe Indian, 73-53.

TODAY - FEBRUARY 9TH

1-5A SHOWDOWN: The Rio Rancho Rams (12-8) are searching for a resume win to get back into the top-10 conversation. They head to Atrisco Heritage (17-4) today hoping for a major upset over a top-5 ranked Jaguars squad.

3-2A KING OF THE HILL: Both the Tularosa Wildcats (18-2) and Lordsburg Mavericks (14-2) sit with a perfect record in district play. The winner will take a lead of the district heading into the final week of the season. They play again in 6-days but today is round 1 of a possible three game series.

SEED GAME: Sandia (13-7) and Eldorado (10-9) are both in a battle for a seed in the 8-12 range - Sandia has an opportunity to get into the top-8. Right now both teams are in the hunt for the district regular title and automatic bid. La Cueva (5-1), Sandia (5-1) and Eldorado (4-1) are the current district standings for 2-5A.

SMALL SCHOOL BATTLE: Menaul (15-3) will travel to Bosque (12-5) in a 3A vs 2A game in the Albuquerque Metro area. Both teams are top teams in their classification and looking to earn a resume win - if one becomes a DC this could help their criteria.

LINES

Eldorado -1.5 over Sandia

Moore: The C Team

Moore: The C Team
By: John Moore | NMPreps

Many times I walked out of the back gym to be greeted by the Head Varsity Coach and the JV Coach. “How did you do?” they would ask. “We won.” was always my reply regardless of what the score was. This was a running joke among coaches. The point was that nobody cared about the C team game. There were fewer than a dozen fans, I knew our record but nobody else did, there would be no game film, and there would be no write-up in tomorrow’s newspaper. So if we got hammered by 30 in some dungeon of a back gym with the echo of bouncing basketballs still ringing in my head I would say, “We won.” Nobody could ever prove otherwise.

Jokes aside, C-team boys basketball is marvelous. The kids that we had embraced C team and went out and played extremely hard. They wore the school uniform, there were officials and scorekeepers, and it was our team against their team – the essence of sport. Looking back, we could have done much more to develop the C team as an integral part of the program. The problem today is that you usually cannot find a C team game; schools have eliminated them.

I spoke with a school official in Hobbs. Hobbs, one of the largest schools in the state, has a basketball tradition like no other. But Hobbs has one Varsity and one JV basketball team, the same as Lovington, a school one-third the size of Hobbs. The reason is scheduling. Years ago there was a sophomore team in Hobbs, but when other large schools dropped their Sophomore teams or C teams, Hobbs could not fill a schedule. There are several other reasons not to carry a C team; one of them is budget. Travel, uniforms, meals, coaches, and officials are costly for districts no doubt. Secondly, a third team means more headache. More players means more parents and more parent problems. Many coaches are stretched thin and the third team adds more to the daily grind. Scheduling, practice time, coaching assignments, equipment, uniforms, training and managerial staff, and eligibility all ultimately fall to the head coach. Thirdly, athletic numbers may fluctuate. Depending on the pool size, a school may not be able to field a team from year to year. Lastly, C team players usually don’t become varsity players. They continue to grow, but usually, by the time they become seniors, they have been surpassed in skill by younger players.

Let’s take a look at each reason not to play a C team schedule. If there are no teams to play, this seems the most challenging reason to not field a C team. However, with some effort and some imagination, the C team can play. In basketball, a school may play a 23 game JV schedule with some games with smaller schools. Some of your less experienced athletes could play against smaller school JV teams. Still, there is only so much playing time to go around and some schools will look at other reasons when determining whether to field a third squad. Coaching is a definite hurdle to C teams. Many coaches aspire to become varsity head coaches and being a C team coach, let’s face it, is not a great line on the resume. Staffs can rotate duties to not overwork the coaches and those who coach for the love of sport will find it refreshing to see how fundamental development leads to success on the court. If a school could field 20 JV kids, say 3 who split time with varsity, 12 kids one step below the varsity, and 7 C team type kids, this is a manageable number. Most importantly, that is 7 kids you did not have to cut.

This leads to the issue of athletic numbers. Covid is the newest plague against athletics. Many high schools simply do not have the numbers to field 3 teams. Some have gone to calling the Freshman team the C team. I would argue that the building of numbers is a never-ending struggle that we must fight and win to keep sports healthy. One program that wins this battle is Artesia football. The Sophomore team competes as a unit and is a vital component of continual success. The strategy begins by fielding multiple teams at the junior high level, and not just in football.

Large 8th grade numbers leads to large Freshman numbers. Unfortunately, here is where many schools get a huge drop off of athletes. About 70% of athletes who quit sports will do it around age 13. The number 1 reason? It isn’t fun any more. I would argue that the fun part decreases with the likelihood of getting cut as a Freshman. Many see they will not make the team and are not willing to put in the effort for what they see as inevitable failure. With this drop-off, the athlete pool is depleted and some schools will be scrambling to field a JV team the following year. The C team is a perfect answer. Rather than cut Freshmen, give 9th graders an opportunity to wear the high school uniforms and play in a few C team high school games, safely of course. Some days the top Freshmen get to play C team, some days the less experienced player gets to play C team. Coaches are good at counting games for individual athletes ensuring no rules are broken.

Finally we come to the budget. If you are fortunate to have a board and administration who want kids to succeed and puts them first, budget is not a concern at all. We are talking about adding a minimal number of kids to a program and giving them a chance to participate. Sports teach kids about teamwork, resiliency, overcoming adversity, teamwork, and so many other life skills. The more kids we keep in sports, the more successful adults we create and budget should not deter our mission.

The C team could have unlimited potential for a program by simply offering athletes a place to stay in athletics. How many programs offer a specific place where incoming Sophomores can continue to play and become a part of tradition? The benefits run a gamut of possibilities. From older kids looking for a chance to play for the school before they graduate to younger kids who have not hit the growth spurt yet, the C team could become an invaluable tool. But it takes commitment from the entire coaching community.
