TEAMMETER
at Laguna-Acoma (8/19)Green: LA has been down for a few years and off a 1-win season without much to highlight the future with.
vs Hope Christian (8/27)Red: The Bears will have a challenge against a solid Hope Christian squad ranked 4th this preseason.
vs Tularosa (9/2)Xmas: A tricky game with a 2A favorite taking on a 3A squad ranked 9th. That's why our xmas games are considered coin flips
at Anthony, Texas (9/9)Red: The Wildcats won 5-games last season and returner their stud QB and RB both of which had sound seasons.
vs Chaparral (9/16)Xmas: Chaparral sits at the bottom of 5A football and although the 3A squad is playing up two classes they could get a win.
at Estancia (9/23)Xmas: I've seen these two play and every year you'll have a competitive game. Should be the same this year.
at Capitan (10/7)Green: The Tigers lost both of their studs from last season and could be in a rebuild although they won 7-games last season.
at Socorro (10/14) - DistrictRed: District play starts against the favorite to win the district.
vs Cobre (10/21) - DistrictXmas: This game could be the IN or OUT game, for the playoffs.
vs Hot Springs (10/28) - DistrictGreen: Hot Springs has a new coach and it could take time before they are back in the mix.

HATCH VALLEY BEARS: Best-case scenario (7-3 overall); Worst-case scenario (3-7 overall); NMPreps Predictor (5-5 overall).

Final Word: The Bears have a well balanced schedule this season. They've mixed in some quality games along with some talent returning. Maybe not at the best case scenario but they'll definitely out play the worst case this season.

Grine Interview with Diego Avila, 2024, Belen H.S

NMPreps.com publisher Joshua Grine continues his interview tour with some of the top athletes in New Mexico. #nmpreps

Today, we sit down with Belen High School junior Diego Avila a top running back/safety in 5A football to watch this season. Avila rushed for 600-yards and and 7-touchdowns last season as a sophomore for a 7-4 Belen team that won a playoff game. Avila also had 54-total tackles on defense.

INTERVIEW

Grine: Start with the basics for us.
DA: Diego Avila, Belen HS. I play running back, free safety, and punt/kick returner.

Grine: What sports do you play at Belen?
DA: Football, baseball, and I wrestle.

Grine: What is your jersey number and why?
DA: #3. I've always wore that number since I was a little kid. I've worn it in every sport that I've played.

Grine: Do you have any nicknames?
DA: A few friends call me D, which is just short for Diego.

Grine: If you had a superpower, what would it be?
DA: Super strength or invisible.

Grine: What are the first three songs on your pregame playlist?
DA: Anything by Lil Baby, Travis Scott, or Lil Durk.

Grine: What is your perfect pregame meal?
DA: My perfect pre game meal is probably spaghetti or pasta

Grine: Funniest person on the team?
DA: I’d say one of my friends Manual Marquez

Grine: What are your strengths as a player?
DA: I’d say definitely my speed and agility.

Grine: How did you get into the game and who are some of the influences on your life?
DA: Nobody really got me into it I got myself into the game. Probably my family has been the biggest influence, so I could make them proud and make it fun for them to watch me.

Grine: What is the plan after you graduate?
DA: Go to college and see if I could make a career out of sports

Grine: What are some expectations for your team this year? Goals?
DA: I have high expectations for my team this year I expect us to have a really good record going into the playoffs and then we hope to win a championship.

Grine: What makes it special playing at your school?
DA: Probably playing for everyone in the town because they have so much pride for the town and team.

Grine: Leave us with a quote.
DA: "Nothing worth having comes easy"

Thank you Diego for the awesome interview!
