Week 9 Review

5A BASKETBALL

Upsets: Rio Grande (4-12) beat Capital 51-42; Will the crush a post season hope for Capital? The Ravens get win number four on the season. Surprisingly, the Ravens start district play 2-0 as they capped the week off with a 61-60 win over Manzano on Friday.

On the Rise: Sandia (10-6) is getting back to full strength and this week they went 2-0 with wins over Farmington (53-46) and Eldorado (68-54). This makes it 6-straight wins for the Matadors.

Tournament Talk: Atrisco Heritage earned a big resume booster win over Rio Rancho, 57-48. Staying ahead of the Rams will play huge when looking at the state tournament bracket. Remember that the top four seeds could host a pair of state games leading into the Final Four.

Big Win of the Week: Los Lunas had the win over the week with a 58-53 win over top-10 ranked Santa Fe. What does this mean? Well, freshmen star Jalin Holland could have the Tigers looking for another District Champions.

Bid Earners: Mayfield is 10-9 on the season but a 4-1 start to district play places them in second place only behind NMPreps #1 ranked Las Cruces Bulldawgs (19-0) in the Southern District. The Trojans have won 7 of their last 8 games. The big test, but won't hurt them, is a game against those Bulldawgs on Tuesday of week 10.

4A BASKETBALL

Showdown: Highland (11-3, 1-0) entered the week ranked number one. Belen (12-6, 1-1) entered the week number two. After the Belen Eagles held a first half lead the Hornets fought back to win in overtime, 48-47. Round two is in a couple weeks!

Big Win: Miyamura (7-10, 2-0) could be looking for a district championship after winning 62-60 over Gallup (5-10, 1-1) which has owned this district and city of Gallup for the last decade.

We Back: Del Norte (8-9) never truly left but are now on the climb back up after starting district play 2-0 with wins over Bernalillo (66-52) and Albuquerque Academy (68-62) this week.

Road to the PIT: Week 9 Bracket Predictions

NMPREPS WEEK 9 ROAD TO THE PIT

5A BASKETBALL
SEEDTEAMRECORDBID
#1VOLCANO VISTA17-0 overallDistrict Champ
#2LAS CRUCES17-0 overallDistrict Champ
#3HOBBS17-2 overallDistrict Champ
#4LA CUEVA12-2 overallDistrict Champ

Top Four: Volcano Vista and Las Cruces are the two teams vying for the top-seed in the state tournament. Right now in the freeman rating Volcano Vista owns the edge. Las Cruces has a potential point in the criteria with 2 DC wins vs Volcano Vista earning 1 DC win. The coach input form could be the swing vote giving either a 2-1 win. Hobbs currently edges out La Cueva for the 3-seed with win percentage, and possibly having a DC win. They'll need to keep both as La Cueva has the freeman rating point. Top four seeds gets more intriguing as the winner could potentially host two state tournament rounds (1st & 2nd Round at home site).

SEEDTEAMRECORDBID
#5ATRISCO HERITAGE13-2 overallDistrict Runner Up
#6SANTA FE13-2 overallDistrict Champ
#7CARLSBAD15-3 overallDistrict Runner Up
#8RIO RANCHO11-5 overallDistrict Third Pl.

Next Four Home: The 5-8 seeds will host the other four home games in the opening round of the state tournament. Santa Fe is the last automatic bid in 5A basketball as the favorite to win the northern district. Atrisco Heritage and Carlsbad are most likely in the top-8 as favorites to finish as DRU in their districts. Carlsbad with the easiest path as the other two teams (Roswell, Clovis) are OUT teams. Atrisco Heritage will have the City of Vision teams - Rio Rancho and Cleveland - looking to upset any given night. Rio Rancho looks to grab the final home game spot and a split with Atrisco Heritage could put them in the 6 or 7 spot conversation too.

4A BASKETBALL

SEEDTEAMRECORDBID
#1TAOS14-4 overallDistrict Champ
#2HIGHLAND10-3 overallDistrict Champ
#3BELEN12-5 overallDistrict Runner Up
#4ESPANOLA VALL.12-5 overallDistrict Runner Up

Top Four: The 4A basketball landscape will get interesting and we might not know the bracket until the final night of district play. Taos has the freeman rating right now but if Belen gets the DC over Highland it could swing the 1-seed to Belen as they beat Taos a couple weeks back. Taos will also still have to beat out Espanola Valley. Before you ask, District 5 (Academy, Valley, Hope, Del Norte) is still in play but the parity in that district could have them beat up on each other and earn anywhere from a 3-6 seed for the DC. Silver is 17-2 but not much else on the resume from DC wins or quality wins. However, the #4 freeman rating helps. Remember this is a brief look at the criteria and not who we predict are the best teams in any order solely a small look at what the criteria could bring.

SEEDTEAMRECORDBID
#5SILVER17-2 overallDistrict Champ
#6VALLEY9-7 overallDistrict Champ
#7LOVINGTON11-5 overallDistrict Champ
#8DEL NORTE7-9 overallDistrict Runner Up

Next Four Home: Confidence level, after the 5A bracket takes a significant drop. 4A basketball will change almost each night as teams become healthy and upsets are likely to take place. Three more automatic bids are handed out but Valley and Lovington will have a difficult time winning as other contenders for those DC's are waiting for their opportunity. Silver has a breeze non-district and district schedule, record alone and now a #4 freeman rating might even put them in the top-four. Del Norte is on the rise now with Douma-Sanchez back along with the rest of the roster.

3A BASKETBALL

SEEDTEAMRECORDBID
#1SOCORRO11-5 overallDistrict Champ
#2ROBERTSON8-5 overallDistrict Champ
#3SANDIA PREP5-9 overallDistrict Champ
#4BOSQUE9-3 overallDistrict Runner Up

Top Four: The exciting part about this season is the unknown in 4A and 3A basketball up to this point of the season. Right now any one of the top-6 teams could end up with the 1-seed come March. Today, we have Socorro who is #2 in the freeman rating with Robertson close behind. Sandia Prep and Bosque could do battle for their DC. Robertson has the toughest road with the likes of West Las Vegas, Santa Fe Prep, Santa Fe Indian and St. Michael's. The DC could end up with the 4-seed after they battle each other.

SEEDTEAMRECORDBID
#5SANTA FE PREP9-5 overallDistrict Runner Up
#6NAVAJO PREP6-6 overallDistrict Champ
#7ST. MICHAEL'S2-11 overallDistrict Third Pl.
#8HOT SPRINGS8-8 overallDistrict Runner Up

Next Four Home: If you want drama and excitement come selection night then tune in to 3A basketball. Plenty to play and teams with a lower freeman rating are projected to finish above others - Raton (#1), West Mesa Vegas (#6), Santa Fe Indian (#7), and Crownpoint (#10). Currently those teams are not on the board with a bid to state. Plenty of shake up to happen.

2A BASKETBALL

SEEDTEAMRECORDBID
#1TULAROSA13-2 overallDistrict Champ
#2REHOBOTH CHR.10-2 overallDistrict Champ
#3PECOS9-6 overallDistrict Champ
#4ESCALANTE10-4 overallDistrict Champ

Top Four: Well, let's add 2A basketball to the conversation of unknowns. Tularosa with the monster win last night (1/19/22) over Magdalena improves their resume. If they can secure the district title, they can get the 1-seed. Their win over reigning champ Rehoboth Christian helped propel them to the top of the classification. Pecos appears healthy on the trend back up after weeks of some losses. Escalante the clear favorite in their district. Others floating around are Jal, Hagerman, and Estancia for a top-four seed. Estancia's recent loss to district opponent ATATC hurt but should be back.

SEEDTEAMRECORDBID
#5ESTANCIA10-4 overallDistrict Champ
#6 MENAUL9-3 overallDistrict Runner Up
#7 JAL10-2 overallDistrict Champ
#8HAGERMAN11-0 overallDistrict Runner Up

Next Four Home: Okay, we have some projected finishes that could either push teams up or out of the top-8 altogether. Estancia dropped one recently to ATATC, which was an upset but we could see them still finishing as a DC. Menaul will be the challenger to them and it could move the Jal-Hagerman DC winner into up into the 5-6 section as well. Yes, Hagerman is the #1 freeman rating team this week and they are undefeated however we project Jal as the DC. It would move Jal up and Hagerman down. Plenty to play though and the landscape of this bracket will change weekly.

1A BASKETBALL

SEEDTEAMRECORDBID
#1MAGDALENA16-1 overallDistrict Champ
#2FORT SUMNER7-2 overallDistrict Champ
#3MELROSE8-3 overallDistrict Runner Up
#4ROY/MOSQUERO12-4 overallDistrict Champ

Top Four: We have Magdalena still as the heavy favorite despite their loss to Tularosa (2A). District 6 will feature some of the best contenders with the likes of Fort Sumner, Melrose and Clovis Christian. The winner of District 4 - Elida and Dora will also argue for the top-four spot, right now we have Dora as the favorite and will need some more resume wins as their freeman ranking has them at 10. We have them floating around the 5/6 seed right now (coming).

Daily Dimes: What to Watch in Week 9

Daily Dimes: What to Watch in Week 9

Wednesday, January 19th

Magdalena (16-0) at Tularosa (12-2): The game of the night belongs to the Tularosa Wildcats and Magdalena Steers. The Wildcats have won seven straight games behind the stellar play of Travis Henderson who is averaging 17 points per game. On the other side the perfect 16-0 Steers are led by the number one player in 1A basketball Joren Mirabel (2022) who is averaging 27 point per game this season. Pick: Magdalena 70-59

Del Norte (6-9) at Bernalillo (8-8): Two teams in need of every win from here on out. The Knights are getting back to full strength are led by top-20 player Judah Casaus (2023), the junior is averaging 19 points per game. Bernalillo is looking to bounce back after back to back losses. The Pick: Del Norte 52-47.

Santa Fe Prep (8-5) at St. Michael's (2-10): Wednesday nights are typically a quiet one across the state but tonight we have the Santa Fe Blue Griffins and St. Michael's Horsemen looking to earn any resume that they can. The Horsemen have played arguably one of the toughest schedules in their classification and started the season 0-10 but have a roster back to full strength and looking to make their way to the top. The Pick: St. Mikes 49-42

Tuesday, January 18th - Starting Five
Robertson (8-5) at Santa Fe Indian (7-5): The Cardinals and Braves are looking to make their claim as a state champion contender in a wide open class. The Cardinals feature one of our Top-50 standouts in Matthew Gonzales. Pick: Robertson 70-62.

Centennial (8-9) at Organ Mountain (6-10): This could be a bubble game when looking at the state tournament. Both teams are around the 13-18 range of teams fighting for a bid. Jeven Beltran (2022) is having a solid season averaging 17.1 ppg for Centennial. Pick: Organ Mountain 52-49.

Hope Christian (10-7) at Albuquerque Academy (7-4): The two teams are looking for the seat at the state tournament. Both could be top-8 seeds are one falls outside the top-8 and on the road in the opening round. This district will be a royal rumble again. Jett Wycoff (2023/Hope Christian) and Kellan Gehres (2023/Albuquerque Academy) provides us with a must-see match-up. Pick: Academy 66-56.

Fort Sumner (7-2) at Melrose (8-3): 1A basketball showdown with two teams ranked in the top-four of the NMPreps New Mexico week 9 team rankings. Melrose being lead by its duo of 6-3 senior Logan Devaney and 6-3 sophomore Michael Cardonita. Pick: Melrose 58-52.

Sandia (8-6) at Farmington (15-1): Deal or no deal as a top ten team in New Mexico high school basketball. Sandia enters the week ranked 7th and the 15-1 Scorpions at 10th. 6-6 senior guard Sean Johnson, preseason ranked No. 2 in the Top-20 players, has returned and coming off a 24-point, 9 rebound, 4 assist night vs Cleveland last week. He's averaging 22.6 ppg and 7.6 rpg. Pick: Sandia 66-51.

Sixth Man: Round three of the Cleveland Storm (10-8) vs the Volcano Vista Hawks (16-0). The second ranked Hawks have won comfortable in the first two games (81-70, 76-56) but let's not count out the defending champs led by Top-20 player Daniel Steverson (2024). However, the Hawks have the duo of top-10 ranked players Ja'Kwon Hill (2022) and Sean Atler (2022). Pick: Volcano Vista 71-68.

Monday, January 17th
Raton (9-2) at Clayton (8-4): Raton is ranked number one this week in the state but Clayton is a team that has some decent wins. Could we see an early week upset.
