State 2020: 5A Bracket Breakdown

Best Game: (12) Volcano Vista at (5) Atrisco Heritage: This will be the fourth meeting between the teams the season with Atrisco leading the series (2-1) and winning the last two games. Joziah Ramos of Atrisco Heritage is one of the best in the state and in March play. He's currently averaging 20 points per contest. Volcano Vista has played well against the Jaguars and Ramos holding him to 13 and 9 in both losses.

Upset Alert: (13) Roswell at (4) Onate. Onate took the first one comfortable back on January 2nd but this one becomes an interesting contest with the Roswell Coyotes ability to shoot back into the game. Dominic Nava is averaging 20 points per game and looking to make a splash in March. Onate was the cinderella darlings a year ago being the first 15-seed to advance into the Elite Elite, upsetting a 2-seed (Las Cruces). They have top play-maker Ricky Lujan who should be healthy after a week of rest.

8-9 Tango: (9) La Cueva at (8) Clovis. Clovis traveled into the Albuquerque metro area the first week of the season and escaped with a 63-62 win. Can the Bears return the favor on the road - look for college commit Derek Aeilts to come out shooting in his final games.

Best 5-12 Seed That Could Advance...& Advance: (10) Eldorado. The Eagles are good, they have next level player, they have some hoopers. Will the absence of their head coach Roy Sanchez hurt the Eagles quest for an upset down in Hobbs (7-seed)? Can the Eagles match the speed and tempo of the Eagles in Tasker Arena? Other nominations for this spot are 12-Volcano Vista, who has won has a double-digit seed or Rio Rancho, another who has won it all as a double-digit seed?

Close Call: (16) Gadsden at (1) Las Cruces. Will the Las Cruces Bulldawgs be on the wrong end of history again? The Bulldawgs have won all three meetings this season, and looked comfortable in winning all three. 5A hoops is top-down strong this season though and outside of a game or two each could provide some March mayhem though?

NMPreps Numbers
(1) Las Cruces -9.5 over (16) Gadsden
(2) Capital -11.5 over (15) Centennial
(3) Santa Fe -15 over (14) Carlsbad
(4) Onate -1.5 over (13) Roswell
(5) Atrisco Heritage -2.5 over (12) Volcano Vista
(6) Cleveland -6 over (11) Rio Rancho
(7) Hobbs -5.5 over (10) Eldorado
(8) Clovis -1 over (9) La Cueva

Criteria Adjustment

This was posted in the AJ this morning. I don’t like using the SOS component like it mentions because Maxpreps already factors that in. However, change needs to be made. Only 2 metro 5A’s are hosting home games. You can’t tell me only 2 metro teams are top 6 teams.

State 2020: 4A Bracket Breakdown

State 2020: 4A Bracket Breakdown

Upset Alert: (10) Gallup at (7) Silver. This will likely be the most likely pick in the field as Gallup is considered one of the top-3 teams in the classification. We can see both sides of the argument though as the Silver Lady Colts won 61-37 the day after Christmas at the Las Cruces tournament. The Lady Colts bring a strong denial defense but haven't seen much a test in 2020 and Gallup appears to be clicking at the right time this March and McBroom (head coach of Gallup) is one of the best in 4A.

Sold Out: (15) Shiprock at (2) Kirtland Central. The Lady Chieftains haven't been the same since not renewing the contract of Larsen Henderson. They did get a magical win last week against the Lady Broncos in the semifinals of the district tournament. However, I think the Lady Broncos have bigger goals in mind, yes the atmosphere will be electric - lady hoops in the NW region is unmatched in the country - but KC rolls.

Close Call or Travel Woes: (14) Valley at (3) Portales. The Valley Vikings can shoot from the outside and tend to let it fly. They play with some serious grit. Wade Fraze has been in this situation plenty of times. Albuquerque schools rarely get road tested and this could be a huge factor in this contest.

March Cinderellas: (13) Goddard at (4) Highland. 4A will be an interesting field and if you've followed the class the parity matches that of the 5A boys field. Top-down it's a very competitive class and Goddard made an upset last season as an 11-seed. Can they make it two years in a row? It was between this game and the Gallup-Silver game for upset alert.

Old School Rivalry Feel: (11) Grants at (6) Bernalillo. The two have played in a pair of close games and bringing back what used to be a fun and heated rivalry between the schools/towns. This could bring some more electricity to a March Madness basketball month.

NMPreps Numbers
(1) Los Lunas -13
(2) Kirtland Central -11
(3) Portales -11.5
(4) Highland, -3.5
(5) Pojoaque Valley, -8
(6) Bernalillo, -4.5
(7) Espanola, -5
(10) Gallup, -2

State 2020: 5A 1st Round Preview & Picks

Upset Watch: (10) Farmington at (7) Sandia. We had to pick a game, we also try avoiding the 8-9 game. That being said we go with the Farmington Scopions on the road in Albuquerque as they take on the 7-seed Sandia Matadors. However, taking down double-double machine Viane Cumber (2021) will be a tall order. Can the Henderson (head coach of Farmington) use his post season magic again, behind the shooting of 2023 guard Kiiyani Anitielu?

Best Game: (9) Cibola at (8) Carlsbad. One coach has held the blue trophy in March (Cibola), one has yet to get over that hill (Carlsbad). This one will bring two of the best in the game but will it be the guard led - Isabel Montoya (Cibola) over the inside presence of Kaliyah Montoya (Carlsbad)? The x-factor in this one could be speedy guard Baylee Molina (2020) as the Cavegirls look to defend their home court.

Close or No Cigar: (11) West Mesa at (6) Centennial. The West Mesa Lady Mustangs are looking to defend their 2019 State Championship and have a pair of next level players. They are also coming into the playoffs after playing in the top-down best district in the state in 2-5A. The hard part is the very talented Centennial group has a killer duo in Larissa Laborin and Jessica Rios. This could either be a close one down to the fourth quarter or a Centennial comfortable win, no in-between.

No Cigar: 1-Hobbs, 2-Piedra Vista, 3-Volcano Vista, 4-La Cueva and 5-Mayfield. The top-five seeds will move along and get playing time for bench players as they prep for the Elite Eight next Tuesday in Albuquerque.

NMPreps First Round Picks
(1) Hobbs, -25
(2) Piedra Vista, -30
(3) Volcano Vista, -22
(4) La Cueva, -18
(5) Mayfield, 21.5
(6) Centennial, -5
(7) Sandia, -2.5
(8) Carlsbad, -2

Skinny: Although we discussed possibilities of upsets or close-calls we couldn't take the chances. All eight top seeds should move along, creating a powerful Elite Eight round, but crazier things have happened. Who are you taking NMPreps members?

State 2020: 5A Basketball Team Capsules

5A Basketball

No. 1 Hobbs Eagles

Record: 25-1 overall
Head Coach: Joey Carpenter
Bid: Automatic; District Champion
Notes: The Lady Eagles, winners of 25-game this season, enter the post season on a quest to get back into the state championship game. The Eagles have played in the last two state championship games winning it all in 2018. They are led by freshman phenom Wisdom Anthony (2023/Guard) who dropped 24-points in the district tournament championship.

No. 2 Piedra Vista Panthers
Record: 27-3 overall
Head Coach: Joe Reed
Bid: Automatic; District Champion
Notes: The Lady Panthers reached the Final Four last season before falling to eventual state champion West Mesa. They returned a core of their key contributors last season that included sophomore sensation Lenae Billy (2022/Guard) who has averaged 16 points, 6 rebounds and 3 steals per game this season.

No. 3 Volcano Vista Hawks
Record: 23-2 overall
Head Coach: Lisa Villareal
Bid: Automatic; District Champion
Notes: The Volcano Vista Lady Hawks have been one of the top programs in New Mexico under head coach Lisa Villarael winning it all in 2016 and 2014. They bring in one of the best duos in Jaelyn Bates (2022/Guard) and Natalia Chavez (2022/Forward). Bates is putting in 16 points per contest and Chavez adding in a team-high 18 points per game.

No. 4 La Cueva Bears
Record: 23-3 overall
Notes: Robert Perea
Bid: Automatic; Regular Season District Champ
Notes: The Lady Bears have reached two state championship games under head coach Perea (2017 & 2015) finishing runner up in both. This season the Bears have a must-see prospect in Kaya Ingram (2020/Guard), who has already committed to play at the next level. Ingram is averaging 19 points, 6 rebounds, and 4 assists per contest.

No. 5 Mayfield Trojans
Record: 23-5 overall
Head Coach: George Maya
Bid: Automatic; District Champion
Notes: Led by legendary head coach George Maya, who won his 500th game this season. The Trojans have looked to senior wing Kayla Avalos this season who is averaging 13 points and 7 rebounds per contest.

No. 6 Centennial Hawks
Record: 26-4 overall
Head Coach: Louie Laborin
Bid: At-Large; District Runner Up
Notes: The Lady Hawks won 26-games this season, second most in 5A basketball. The Lady Hawks have a tandem in Jessica Rios (2020) and Larissa Laborin (2022) who have guided them to a program best. Rios leads the way with 16 points and 5 rebounds per game; Laborin is putting in 11 points and 7 boards.

No. 7 Sandia Matadors
Record: 21-4 overall
Head Coach: Lee Kettig
Bid: Automatic; District Champion
Notes: The Matadors won it all in 2017 under head coach Lee Kettig and are looking primed for another post season run. The Lady Matadors are 21-4 on the season and went a perfect 10-0 in district play. The must-see and top prospect in New Mexico is Viane Cumber (2021) who is averaging a double-double this season with 22 points and 11 rebounds per contest. Also, look for Marisa Griego (2021) who will be one to watch again next season.

No. 8 Carlsbad Cavegirls
Head Coach: John Zumbrun
Bid: At-Large; District Runner Up
Notes: The Lady Cavegirls are the lone team to beat top-seed Hobbs this season and looking for another match with them in the Elite Eight. The Cavegirls look inside to 6-foot post Kaliyah Montoya (2020) who is averaging around 15 points per contest this season.
