Hoops: Daily Dimes - Thursday, January 16th

5A BASKETBALL

Thursday, January 17th
Albuquerque (5-8) at Volcano Vista (13-1)
Atrisco Heritage (8-6) at Sandia (3-10)
Cibola (6-7) at Manzano (3-9)
Cleveland (17-0) at Highland (8-5)
Eldorado (12-2) at Rio Grande (3-8)
Farmington (7-10) at Aztec (7-7)
Rio Rancho (10-6) at La Cueva (8-5)
Santa Fe (12-3) at Espanola Valley (10-6)

Thursday Scoop

Tournament Type: Rio Rancho at La Cueva. Both teams ranked in the NMPreps.com Power 16 team rankings this week. Both are also in position to either meet up in the opening round or fighting for a spot in the top eight. La Cueva guard Derek Aeilts coming off his 1,000 career point at LCHS. Rio Rancho coming off a criteria win over Gallup.

Redemption or Construction: Atrisco Heritage, the two-time defending state champ, has been on a struggle lately and will look to avenge a loss last week to Sandia, 62-56, at the APS Metro Championships. Another loss here could be in the talks of an early bubble seat for the Jaguars.

Cross-Class Clash: Santa Fe (5A) travels to Espanola Valley (4A) to take on the very up and down Sundevils. I believe this one will come down to basket offense and who can make the adjustments or run their sets.

4A BASKETBALL

Thursday, January 17th
Bernalillo (8-7) at Belen (6-11)
Bloomfield (4-9) vs Hot Springs (13-0) - Hope Christian Tournament, 1:30pm
Cleveland (17-0) at Highland (8-5)
Cuba (5-7) at Hope Christian (5-7) - Hope Tournament, 7:30pm
East Mountain (1-11) at Moritary (4-7)
Farmington (7-10) at Aztec (7-7)
Kirtland Central (8-7) at Grants (8-8)
Los Alamos (1-13) at Del Norte (6-6)
Los Lunas (9-7) at Valley (8-5)
Sandia Prep (9-5) at Albuquerque Academy (8-3)
Santa Fe (12-3) at Espanola Valley (10-6)
Shiprock (4-9) vs Cobre (8-4) - Hope Tournament
St. Pius X (4-6) at Taos (11-4) - Hope Tournament, 10am
Texico (8-4) at Lovington (11-4)

Thursday Talk

Scoop: The Hope Christian tournament kicks off with a quality field of playoff teams. It also features the second ranked team from 4A in host Hope Christian, the top ranked team from 3A in Hot Springs, and a 4A match-up between Taos and St. Pius X that could be used in the playoff debates.

Bubble Talk: Kirtland Central (8-7) at Grants (8-8). This one has plenty of playoff implications to it. A loss and the resume will hurt and send them higher in to the 13-16 sections or possibly 17-18 (first two out).

3A BASKETBALL

Bloomfield (4-9) at Hot Springs (13-0)
Clayton (4-8) at Tucucumari (5-8)
Cuba (5-7) at Hope Christian (5-7)
East Mountain (1-11) at Moriarty (4-7)
Eunice (8-5) at Tularosa (9-3)
Lordsburg (5-6) at Dexter (2-12)
Mesilla (7-3) at NMMI (4-2)
Sandia Prep (9-5) at Albuquerque Academy (8-3)
Santa Fe Prep (5-4) at Santa Rosa (8-5)
Shiprock (4-9) at Cobre (8-4)
West Las Vegas (6-7) at Socorro (7-5)

Like: Sandia Prep (3A) and Albuquerque Academy (4A) is one to watch tonight. Similar styles and both could use for the criteria.

Alright: West Las Vegas and Socorro will be a playoff team seed debate come Selection Day.

Belen vs Socorro Dual

I was able to attend the wrestling match between the Eagles and the Warriors last night. Even though Belen won as they should have, I was impressed with the work ethic, desire, and very good coaching that Socorro displayed. Coach Partridge and his staff have really brought the program around. They have good numbers in the program and will represent themselves well at the state tournament. Belen along with Los Lunas , and Valencia will do so as well.

Week 8: District Predictions & State Talk

4A BASKETBALL

NW DISTRICT

Gallup 10-0
Kirtland Central 7-3
Bloomfield 6-4
Shiprock 5-5
Aztec 1-9
Miyamura 1-9

Scoop: Gallup should roll in this district and the district will fight to get two teams into the tournament. Kirtland Central looks to be the most likely at this point for the second and only at-large bid.

NORTHERN DISTRICT
Taos 7-1
Espanola Valley 7-1
Pojoaque Valley 4-4
Moriarty 1-7
Los Alamos 1-7

Scoop: Much like the NW district, the northern district is likely a two-bid league at most. Taos and Espanola Valley have the wins and resume at this point. The question could eventually turn into, will either of them earn a top-8 seed and host a first round game?

SOUTHERN DISTRICT
Chaparral 4-2
Ruidoso 4-2
Santa Teresa 3-3
Silver 1-5

Scoop: A 1-bid league and it will likely be for the 16th seed in the state tournament. Also, the most unknown district in the classification. Chaparral safe pick, I guess.....

SE DISTRICT
Artesia 6-0
Lovington 3-3
Goddard 2-4
Portales 1-5

Scoop: Artesia is the favorite to run the district but a sound four teams. They are a two-bid league today. Lovington has 10-wins on the season but Goddard and Portales could feature more of a test than their non-district slate.

VALENCIA COUNTY DISTRICT
Los Lunas 7-1
Valencia 7-1
Grants 4-4
St. Pius X 1-7
Belen 1-7

Scoop:The Tigers and Jaguars will go to battle and one could steal one of the top-8 seeds. Not much travel for VC teams come district. A three bid league but as of today it looks like a two bid league.

CENTRAL DISTRICT
Valley 6-4
Hope Christian 6-4
Highland 5-5
Albuquerque Academy 5-5
Bernalillo 4-6
Del Norte 4-6

Scoop: WOW. Almost unfair that all teams are in one district. Okay it is unfair. It will be a four bid league with 6 deserving teams. Maybe they'll all go 5-5 and all get a bid into the state tournament.

AUTOMATIC BIDS RANKED
  1. Valley (Range 1-4 seed)
  2. Gallup (Range 1-4 seed)
  3. Los Lunas (Range 3-8 seed)
  4. Artesia (Range 3-8 seed)
  5. Taos (Range 5-10 seed)
  6. Chaparral (Range 16 seed)

AT-LARGE BIDS RANKED - TIER 1
  1. Hope Christian (Range 2-8 seed)
  2. Highland (Range 3-9 seed)
  3. Albuquerque Academy (Range 6-12 seed)
  4. Espanola Valley (Range 6-13 seed)
  5. Valencia (Range 7-15 seed)
  6. Lovington (Range 8-15 seed)
AT-LARGE BIDS RANKED - BUBBLE
  1. Kirtland Central (Range 11-15 seed)
  2. Grants (Range 12-13 seed)
  3. Bernalillo (Range 14 seed)
  4. Del Norte (Range 15 seed)
FIRST TEAMS OUT
  1. St. Pius X
  2. Pojoaque Valley
  3. Bloomfield
  4. Belen
*Range is if the teams finish in their district slot.

Scoop: If you look at all four sections, the central district could potentially get all 6 teams into the state tournament. Agree or disagree? They all could also be elite eight favorites. They will have to at least get 3 to 4 wins though in order to steal a bid. Man, 4A basketball is up for grabs though and bids will be a battle to get this year.

Notes & More

Out: N/A
New: N/A
Next: Farmington (11-4), Santa Fe (8-7)

Scoop: The biggest drop that you see this week is Sandia slipping down three spots after a pair of losses to La Cueva. La Cueva also jumping into the top-four after a solid week winning the APS Metro Championships.

What we know at this point: Any of the top-ten could win the state championship. Yes, the top three/four are solid and right now have the most odds of making the Final Four. However, I don't believe we would be a complete shock if any of the top ten make the Final Four.

Coach: We do have to point out that Deming head coach Kimberly Garcia has done a tremendous job in year one. She took over a 16-12 team and now has them 13-2, 1-0 district and ranked in our Power-12. Early newcomer coach of the year award winner.

Daily Dimes - Tuesday, January 14th

RANKING TOP GAMES TO WATCH TONIGHT

Centennial (7-9, 2-0) at Las Cruces (15-1, 2-0)
Gadsden (8-6, 0-1) at Alamogordo (12-4, 1-1)
Rio Rancho (9-6) at Gallup (10-3)
Eldorado (11-2) at Atrisco Heritage (8-5)
Valencia (9-7) at Capital (11-2)
Grants (8-7) at Espanola Valley (9-6)

District: Centennial-Las Cruces & Gadsden-Alamogordo continue the southern district play and surprisingly Centennial is playing for the number one spot. Alamogordo and Gadsden are both back-8 teams that want to be top-8.

Cross-Classifications: Rio and Gallup along with Valencia and Capital provide us with a 5A vs 4A game with plenty of entertainment. Must-see games and potential slip ups for 5A teams (Rio and Capital). Rio and Gallup could be fun contest, getting up and down. Officials put the whistles away and enjoy the run.

Class Battles: Eldorado has moved up in the NMPreps.com's rankings with Atrisco the major slip last week at the APS Metro Championships. Grants has a resume win already, can they make it two? Espanola Valley has been up and down but looking to maintain a shot at a top-8 seed.
