Week 7: Daily Dimes - January 7th

BIG FIVE FOR TUESDAY
Carlsbad (10-3) at Artesia (7-5): Eddy County battle takes place tonight with both teams ranked in the top 10 of their respected classifications. Artesia features a talented group with some depth. Carlsbad brings a high energy guard that led them to a win in the first meeting, 47-36 win for Carlsbad (December 6th).

Gadsden (6-5) at Las Cruces (13-1): Well, believe it or not but it is the start of district play in 3-5A. Las Cruces will battle with a Gadsden team looking to make a move this season.

Mayfield (4-10) at Alamogordo (11-3): How good is Alamogordo? Will Mayfield be a late bloomer? Alamogordo is in the power 16 rankings but many still have questions if they can be a sleeper. Mayfield is coming off a quality win over Los Lunas and maybe on the verge of making some movement.

St. Pius X (4-5) at Sandia Prep (6-5): Some history here as both head coaches have the same mentor and were on staff at SPX. St. Pius X is a newly ranked team in 4A hoops while Sandia Prep sits at the top of 3A basketball. Prep is coming off an impressive week at the Gallup invite.

Lovington (7-3) at Clovis (10-4): This could be a tell all for the Lovington Wildcats. Yes, they are off to a 7-3 start, they have the one resume win over Alamogordo, but this could give us a true picture of the Wildcats.

ALBUQUERQUE METRO CHAMPIONSHIPS
Bracket Click Here

Highland vs Rio Rancho (at Volcano Vista)
Manzano at Atrisco Heritage (at Valley)
Valley at Albuquerque (at Valley)
Scoop: These three are the best games of the opening round. The others should go as expected. Highland and Rio Rancho has done battle a couple times already this season and this one should be as good. Valley-Albuquerque has the history factor, plus it could be a battle this season but Albuquerque has played below the expectation so far. Atrisco Heritage could be the most talked about squad after this week - ranked outside the top-8 right now but wouldn't shock a single person if they win the Metro.

Daily Dimes - January 4th

Las Cruces (12-1) travels to take on Roswell (10-4). Dawgs should roll but can Roswell finally get one that peaks the eyebrows?

Eldorado (8-0) and Volcano Vista (9-0) square off today in the battle of the unbeatens. Dion Battle (2020) and Deraje Agbaosi (2020) both add to the NMPreps50 today.

Cleveland (11-0) heads to Capital (10-1) for what should be a sold old gymnasium. Both teams ranked high in our NMPreps Team Rankings and have plenty of praise.

Gallup (9-2) will play in the Gallup Invite Championship against a VERY good Spring Valley team from Las Vegas, Nevada. If you're in the area, why not attend this one?

What do you have?

District Views: 1-5A

Standings
Volcano Vista 6-1 overall
Cleveland 7-3 overall
Cibola 5-3 overall
Atrisco Heritage 2-5 overall
Rio Rancho 2-7 overall

Bids
Volcano Vista, Cleveland, Cibola: If we ended the season today, those three are likely dancing with Atrisco Heritage and Rio Rancho at home. The shocker, to some extent, is the Rio Rancho rebuild being an overhaul. Volcano Vista is the clear cut favorite to win the district with Cibola playing better lately and a slight favorite over Cleveland as the DRUP.

Starting Five

Isabel Montoya - G - Cibola - 2020
Jaelyn Bates - G - Volcano Vista - 2022
Allyson Frank - F - Cleveland - 2022

NMPreps.com's guide to New Mexico high school basketball and what games to watch.

MUST-SEE GAMES

Las Cruces (11-1) at Los Lunas (7-4), 2pm

Preview: Our big three for the day turns into a big two with the limited amount of games taking place across New Mexico on Thursday. However, this cross-classification contest brings some excitement as the third ranked (NMPreps.com's Power 16 Rankings) Las Cruces Bulldawgs bring a roster highlighted by a talented group of William Benjamin (2022), Ray Brown (2020), and Salvador Nevarez (2020) along with Gonzalo Corbalan (2020). Los Lunas graduated plenty but cager Bryce Santana (2020) has been a force in the paint and will create some challenges for the Dawgs inside. Newcomer Josiah Navarro (2021) has quietly put in 17 points per contest. Prediction: Las Cruces 48, Los Lunas 41

Onate (12-1) at Rowell (10-3), 7pm

Preview: At Roswell we have the Onate Knights (ranked 4th in 5A) taking on the 13th ranked Roswell Coyotes. Could this be a trap game for the Knights who are coming off their first loss last week. When Roswell is on, they are on, with the uptempo pace that they like to play. Sometimes that pace can put them in the hole. You know they will be up for this one though and the Knights could be in for a battle. Onate features a top player in the state in Ricky Lujan (2020) and he'll square off with the dup power of Dominic Nava (2020) and Taymon Burrola (2021). Prediction: Onate 60, Roswell 59

GALLUP TOURNAMENT

OAXOaPm.jpg

The Gallup Invite welcomes a pair of out-of-state teams in Gilbert Christian (Gilbert, AZ) and . The Knights of Gilbert Christian will take on Clovis, and the Wildcats look to be the favor over the 6-5 Knights. The Wildcats are coming into the contest (8-3) and on a seven game win streak.

The other out-of-state team Spring Valley (Las Vegas, NV) is a heavy favorite in the 6pm contest, as the crosstown team - Miyamura is set up with the toughest opponent in the field.

Grants and Sandia Prep both 5-3 on the season will offer a quality game but no true favorite in the game. Gallup, the host, should roll by Navajo Prep in the night session.
