Week 7: Playoff Projections

DISTRICT 1 - Current Standings
Cleveland (14-0 overall)
Volcano Vista (12-0 overall)
Atrisco Heritage (7-4 overall)
Rio Rancho (8-5 overall)
Cibola (2-7 overall)
Proj.: I could see the standings staying as is it looks today. However, this one could have any of 1-4 finishing in any order. Atrisco peaks later but maybe showing some signs of a three-peat projection falling. Cleveland and Volcano as good as it gets in NM. Cibola, again, in the cellar. (1-Cleveland, 2-Volcano Vista, 3-Rio Rancho, 4-Atrsico Heritage, 5-Cibola)

DISTRICT 2 - Current Standings
Eldorado (10-1 overall)
La Cueva (5-4 overall)
Farmington (7-9 overall)
West Mesa (3-8 overall)
Piedra Vista (3-12 overall)
Proj.: The only switch I'd take is Farmington and West Mesa swapping but neither has given reason to secure the three, WM opening win over Atrisco was nice however, going 1-7 after their 2-0 start is tough. Eldorado and La Cueva will finish 1-2; La Cueva will get better if Aeilts gets back. (1-Eldorado, 2-La Cueva, 3-West Mesa, 4-Farmington, 5-Piedra Vista)

DISTRICT 3 - Current Standings
Las Cruces (14-1 overall, 1-0 district)
Alamogordo (12-3 overall, 1-0 district)
Centennial (6-9 overall, 1-0 district)
Onate (13-2 overall, 0-1 district)
Gadsden (6-6 overall, 0-1 district)
Mayfield (4-11 overall, 0-1 district)
Deming (4-7 overall, 0-0 district)
Scoop: The Bulldawgs are a fine machine. Alamogordo is the riser this season and Centennial the upset win to start district play. I definitely like LC to win out and stay at the top, even if they lose a game or two. Onate will recover, Alamogordo could stay in the top three. (1-Las Cruces, 2-Onate, 3-Alamogordo, 4-Gadsden, 5-Centennial, 6-Mayfield, 7-Deming)

DISTRICT 4 - Current Standings
Carlsbad (11-3 overall)
Clovis (11-4 overall)
Roswell (10-5 overall)
Hobbs (11-6 overall)
Scoop: Top-down, this is a tough district, maybe the toughest to win. There is no cellar team and all could be in a situation that they win at home. That won't happen with all being 2-2 and the slip teams could be Carlsbad and Roswell. (1-Clovis, 2-Hobbs, 3-Carlsbad, 4-Roswell)

DISTRICT 5 - Current Standings
Capital (11-2 overall)
Santa Fe (11-3 overall)
Albuquerque (5-5 overall)
Manzano (3-6 overall)
Rio Grande (3-7 overall)
Sandia (1-9 overall)
Scoop: Capital and Santa Fe are the favorites to win this district although Albuquerque and Manzano could upset on a given night. Rio Grande and Sandia are cellars this season. (1-Capital, 2-Santa Fe, 3-Albuquerque, 4-Manzano, 5-Sandia, 6-Rio Grande).

Sad News From Alamogordo

We are saddened to learn of the loss of Ariana Diaz, our 2019 Team Captain. She impacted our program in ways we can't put into words. She touched and forever changed the lives of our coaches and players forever. Thank you Ashley and Augustine for sharing her with us this season.
Ariana, you will always be a Tiger and a part of our family!

Daily Dimes - January 8th & 9th

LAST NIGHT TAKEAWAYS

Upset(s):
Manzano 70, Atrisco Heritage 68. The unranked Monarchs earned that early season resume win over the Jaguars. The Atrisco Heritage Jaguars (No. 9 NMPreps.com Power-16 Rankings) was our sleeper pick to win it all at the APS Metro Championships but now have a date with Valley, also upset on Tuesday night in the opening round. Albuquerque 66, Valley 61. We watched the opening half and the Vikings controlled the opening half with big shots and containing do-all point guard Jude Tapia for the Bulldogs. Well, the Dogs, currently unranked in 5A, must have opened things up in the second half as they improve to 4-5 on the season.

Take Notice: Alamogordo 81, Mayfield 55. Head coach James Voight has built a sound program everywhere he's gone and that stays true in Alamogordo. Voight has the Tigers at 12-3 on the season and starting district play 1-0 with a monster win. Centennial 68, Onate 51. Well, this could be in the upset section of the night as well with the Hawks taking out the third ranked Onate Knights on opening night of district play. Could the Hawks be peaking at the right time?

BIG THREE FOR TODAY

APS Metro: Championship Side (7pm)
#1 Volcano Vista vs #8 Rio Rancho (at Volcano Vista)
#2 Cleveland vs #7 Hope Christian (at Cibola)
#3 Eldorado vs #6 La Cueva (at La Cueva)
#12 Albuquerque vs #13 Manzano (at Valley)

Scoop: The 1 and 2 seed is likely to meet up on Saturday at Albuquerque High School for the championship. Interesting note is the team that has won the APS Metro has never won a state championship in the top classification. If you are thinking of taking an upset tonight, don't sleep on Rio Rancho.

APS Metro: Consolation Side (5:30pm)
#4 Atrisco Heritage vs #5 Valley (at Valley)
#9 Highland vs #16 Rio Grande (at Volcano Vista)
#10 West Mesa vs #15 Cibola (at Cibola)
#11 Del Norte vs #14 Sandia (at La Cueva)

Scoop: Well, the obvious game to watch is the Atrisco-Valley game. Both will still remain favorites for a deep run in March. Also, it puts two of the most fiery head coaches against each other. Highland had players suspended last night, they return tonight against Rio Grande.
