BIG THREE TONIGHT
Eddie Pena Classic: The Grants tournament takes place tonight with Capital vs Belen highlighting the session. Newcomb, a favorite in 2A basketball, could be the dark horse of the weekend but a Grants-Capital showing on Saturday will be fun.

State Position: Gallup traveling to Los Lunas tonight creates some spark on a quiet evening. Both are consistent state teams that reach the PIT and this could be a preview of elite eight (maybe more) teams.

Staying Perfect: 3A-Hot Springs at 8-0 on the season will take on 4A-Santa Teresa (2-5) on the road. Can the Tigers keep a perfect record in tact? They looked solid at their recent tournament in Wingate.

Early Buy/Sell

5A BASKETBALL

The Perfect Group That I Like - Buy
Onate (9-0), Cleveland (5-0), Volcano Vista (4-0): There is six team undefeated in the 5A classification of New Mexico basketball. Which would you take as a true title contender? These are my three favorite but Cleveland and Volcano Vista are slightly ahead of Onate. However, I will say Onate could be the team that stays perfect the longest and has a team that could win it all. Ricky Lujan is good, he is the the type of player you can't stop but hope to contain.

More to Prove - Sell
Eldorado (6-0), Carlsbad (6-0): The Eagles of Eldorado have a real deal prospect in Deraje Agbaosi but will that be enough to make them more than an elite eight type of team? If I had to answer this, and I do, then I would say no. Elite Eight is the ceiling. Carlsbad is in the same conversation., they have a player in Josh Silas, who I really like, and he might be an all-state player but won't be enough to get to the Final Four. Selling both on getting passed

The Consistency with One - Buy
Las Cruces (6-1): Now dressing the part, head coach William Benjamin continues to be one of the top head coaches in New Mexico. Yep, I just said that and I totally agree with it. I followed the 2013 championship team closely and that was the lone season where ever bracket was predicted correctly - Las Cruces was a 6-seed and won it all but I had ever upset picked correct. Back to topic, Benjamin in the last three seasons - 28 wins, 29 wins, and 27 wins. He has won 215 games since taking over in 2010 with one losing season, which was 2010 after taking over from Mike Smith. So I'm buying the Dawgs in the Final Four this season.

BIG THREE
Early Bracket Charts: Manzano (1-1) at Eldorado (3-0). The pair of Albuquerque-Metro area schools square off at Eldorado on Tuesday night. Manzano currently ranked 16th in our NMPreps.com Power-16 is led a senior heavy roster. Eldorado ranked 9th in 5A basketball has 6-foot-6 forward Deraje Agbaosi to take the lead.

Big Game of the Night: Santa Fe (3-0) at Rio Rancho (2-1). Santa Fe (No. 3) is coming off a championship week at their host tournament and all eyes are on University of New Mexico commit JB White (2021). Rio Rancho (No. 13) is coming off a 2-1 week in Artesia's City of Champions tournament and look to make some early season news.

Should Have Eyes On: West Mesa (2-1) vs Albuquerque (0-2). The West Mesa Mustangs (No. 7) had an impressive opening week with a win over defending state champ Atrisco. They have an unranked Albuquerque team looking for a rebound. Top players Eloy Medina (WM) vs Jude Tapia (AHS) is the highlight of this contest.
