-3 "Big" Districts. Having three districts, each with at least 6-teams, should allow for the 'right' teams to earn a bid into the playoffs.

What I Would Have Liked
-Two Divisions. Stop with the thought of only using enrollment numbers. Could have gone. Top-24 biggest enrollments schools into two division. 5 Classes

5A Division I (Top Tier)
  1. Cleveland
  2. Rio Rancho
  3. Volcano Vista
  4. Clovis
  5. Eldorado
  6. La Cueva
  7. Manzano
  8. Sandia
  9. Centennial
  10. Mayfield (Up)
  11. Las Cruces
  12. Roswell (Up)
District I
Cleveland
Rio Rancho
Volcano Vista
Clovis

District II
La Cueva
Eldorado
Sandia
Manzano

District III
Centennial
Mayfield
Las Cruces
Roswell

5A Division II (Next Tier)
1. Atrisco Heritage
2. West Mesa
3. Albuquerque
4. Gadsden
5. Onate
6. Cibola
7. Rio Grande
8. Artesia (Up)
9. Goddard (Up)
10. Hobbs
11. Piedra Vista (Up)
12. Farmington (Up)

District I
Artesia
Goddard
Hobbs
Albuquerque

District II
Piedra Vista
Farmington
Cibola
Atrisco Heritage

District III
West Mesa
Rio Grande
Onate
Gadsden

*Up = from current 5A class (we eliminated 6A)
-Take only the top 24 teams with the biggest enrollment numbers but split into two divisions.
-Top 8 teams make the playoffs.
-Two 6 team Districts/Conference or Three, 4 team districts.
-10 game schedule but all games must be against 5A teams from either Division I or II.
-Divison II gets tricky to get into three districts but would only have Albuquerque make two long distance travels in district/conference play.

Just a thought.

Arthur Steinkamp from LA made the UNM team as a walk on

I didn’t even know he tried to walk on this fall at UNM as a freshman. I saw him pitch against Santa T in the first round of the Artesia Tourney last spring and thought he had a nice breaking ball

Huge congrats to the kid. Obviously must have lots of upside and I know he is real smart. A kid like this can be an inspiration for a lot of others to chase their dreams. Not sure he had any offers last year and is now a D-1 player.

I wonder how many of the 19 or 20 juco kids made the 35-man roster for UNM

NMPreps.com's guide the 2019 New Mexico High School football state playoffs.

DETAILS
Day: Saturday
Time: 2pm
Location: Eunice High School

EUNICE CARDINALS
Seed: #1
Record: 11-1
Road to the SC
-Quarterfinals - Won, #9 Santa Rosa (55-0)
-Semifinals - Won, #4 Fort Sumner (51-20)
Players to Watch: Mason Caperton (2020/QB), Avante Stevens (2020/WR), Hayden Dean (2021/WR)
Why Eunice: The Eunice Cardinals are looking at a three-peat this weekend as they host Texico in the State Championship. The Cardinals feature one of the top quarterbacks in New Mexico with Mason Caperton (2020) looking to cap his high school career winning three straight titles. Through 11-game this season Caperton has tossed for 3,131 yards and 45 touchdowns. First-year head coach Greg Jackson is also in position to win his first state championship as a head coach.

TEXICO WOLVERINES
Seed: #1
Record: 8-4
Road to the SC
-Quarterfinals - Won, #11 Capitan (41-0)
-Semifinals -Won, #7 Hagerman (38-7)
Players to Watch: Chris Harrison (2020/RB)
Why Texico: The Wolverines enter the game on a 6-game win streak and will look to star tailback Chris Harrison in this game. The Wolverines will need to stop the athletes featured on the Cardinals roster and limit this one getting away from them early. The Wolverines have improved on defense this season from giving up 346 total points last season to 165 this season, huge part in the improvement from 4-wins in 2018 to 8 this year.

NMPreps.com Score Predictor: Eunice 44, Texico 25

BIG THREE FOR THE DAY
Carlsbad (3-0) vs Hobbs (3-2): City of Champions Tournament (Artesia). This championship will give us a preview of two squads on the verge of breaking out. Hobbs has looked solid this week and playing their quick, uptempo style well this week. They have limited turnovers and making decisions on the offense side. Carlsbad has the stood in Josh Silas that has played well this week. He's a very high energetic guard that can create his own shot along with being super quick, getting to the bucket. Two teams that should play a pair at State.

Capital (2-0) at Santa Fe (2-0): Bobby Rodriguez Invitation (Santa Fe). The battle of Santa Fe will have both of it's largest enrollment teams squaring off in the championship game. This gives an early view of the two SF area schools that could be title contenders in their classifications.

Clovis (0-1) at La Cueva (1-1): The Clovis Wildcats are coming off a close 60-59 loss to Cleveland on Friday night and hoping for a quick rebound tonight. La Cueva is off their first win of the season after dropping the first game and now look to get another resume win to their early season. This one should give us an intriguing game played at the basket and the team that executes the best should get the win. Low 50's ending.

What do you have for this Saturday?

Team Rankings NMPreps.com Team Rankings - Week One (11/25-30)

NMPreps.com Team Rankings - Week One (11/25-30)

5A BASKETBALL

1. Atrisco Heritage

Last Season: 22-7 | State Champs
Why: Joziah Ramos (2020) has been one of the best guards to watch every March and is coming off a 24 points per game season.

2. Cleveland
Last Season: 26-7 | Final Four
Why: The Storm took the eventual state champs into overtime in the Final Four last season and although they lost two next level talents we like what they return. This team will be anchored by Clayton Watson III (2021) and Nathan Hasberry (2021) a junior combo worth the watch.

3. Las Cruces
Last Season: 28-1 | First Round
Why: Yes, the Bulldawgs are coming off a monumental first round loss as a 2-seed to a 15-seed but this team has plenty to like in returners. William 'Duece' Benjamin (2020) and Salvador Nevarez (2020) have a chance to make some noise.

4. Santa Fe
Last Season: 24-8 | State Runner Up
Why: Losing the front court and key role players will hurt this team but returning the top prospect in the state in University of New Mexico commit Fedonta 'JB' White (2021) could be enough to get them back into the PIT.

5. La Cueva
Last Season: 16-11 | First Round
Why: We expected more from the Bears last season but this should be one of their best teams since 2013. Derek Aeilts (2020) is one of the top guards in New Mexico and returns after scoring 21 points per game; he committed to St. Edwards University (Austin, TX) this summer.

6. Hobbs
7. Eldorado
8. Onate
9. Clovis
10. Rio Rancho
11. Volcano Vista
12. Capital
13. Gadsden
14. Roswell
15. Manzano
16. Albuquerque

4A BASKETBALL

1. Valley Vikings

Last Season: 17-13 | State Champions
Why: The defending state champs after their run as the 7-seed look to defend their title behind an experienced group. They return all but four players from last season. Seyi Oyeku (2020), Derick Chavez (2021), and Jevon Baker (2020) will be the go-to players.

2. Hope Christian Huskies
Last Season: 20-9 | Elite Eight
Why: The Huskies, the 2-seed in the state tournament last season are the best, most forgot about going into the season. Collin Evans (2020), Grant Ulibarri (2020) and company will guide what could be a very great HOPE CHRISTIAN type of team.

3. Gallup Bengals
Last Season: 23-7 | Elite Eight
Why: The Gallup Bengals were the best team that could but didn't last season. They have a great young head coach making waves and will have all but four returning this season. Could make a Final Four run.

4. Highland
Last Season: 15-11 | First Round
Why: The preseason bump team heading into the 2019/2020 season. Head coach Justin Woody has done a phenomenal job since taking over the Hornets program and this could be one of their best since their 2009 state runner up team. Erasmo Carreon (2020) and Raul Marquez (2020) return after scoring in double figures last year. Tommy Huynh (2020) could be the difference maker.

5. Del Norte
6. Espanola Valley
7. Los Lunas
8. Valencia
9. Artesia
10. Portales
11. Goddard
12. Taos
13. Belen
14. St. Pius X
15. Albuquerque Academy
16. Grants

3A BASKETBALL

No. 1 Hot Springs Tigers
Last Season: 27-4 | State Champions
Scoop: The Hot Springs Tigers made a run to their first state championship since Tommy Morrow led them to the 1993 title, 26 years ago. Head coach Derek Bean has built a program recently and will look to stay atop the class behind junior Verrels Lukman (2021) who led the team in scoring with 10.2 points per game as a sophomore.

No. 2 Sandia Prep Sundevils
Last Season: 20-11 | Final Four
Scoop: The talent was there last season for the Sundevils to finally take home a state championship after years sitting behind Hope Christian. Well, the Huskies are no longer here but the Sundevils ran into a well coached Tigers team in the semifinals last season. The good news is that they bring back some players that played huge roles last season - Max Feit (2020) is one.

No. 3 St. Michael's Horsemen
Last Season: 21-9 | Final Four
Scoop: The 1-seed in the state tournament last season is looking to rebound behind a younger roster after graduating eight players off of last seasons team. Thomas Wood (2020) will be the go-to player this season and you could sort of consider them an underrated favorite - a good team that has some question marks.

No. 4 Robertson Cardinals
Last Season: 16-15 | Elite Eight
Scoop: The Cardinals are the dark horse squad of the preseason as they enter the season with some hype surrounding a team that went one game above .500. The hype comes in the form of Matthew Gonzales who led the team in scoring as a freshman last season. They return a strong core from last season and could be a Final Four and more type of team.

The Rest

5. Socorro
6. West Las Vegas
7. Tularosa
8. Bosque
9. Dexter
10. Santa Fe Indian
11. Navajo Prep
12. Cuba
13. Raton
14. Wingate
15. East Mountain
16. Laguna-Acoma

Daily Dimes: December 6th

Ranking the Games to Watch
Valley (1-0) at Volcano Vista (1-0)
Clovis (0-0) vs Cleveland (1-0)
Artesia (1-0) vs Carlsbad (2-0) - City of Champions (8pm)
Rio Rancho (1-0) vs Hobbs (1-1) - City of Champions (4:30pm)
Del Norte (1-0) at Cibola (0-1)
Sandia (0-1) at Las Cruces (2-0)
Bernalillo (2-0) at West Mesa (2-0)
Goddard (1-1) at Santa Fe (1-0)

Three Thoughts
1) Valley and Volcano Vista gives us a view of top ranked teams from 5A and 4A with the defending 4A champ Valley Vikings against the Volcano Vista Hawks. I like this cross-classification game and will give more of an idea just how could the Vikings will be or could be.
2) Artesia will host the Cavemen in the second round of the City of Champions tournament. Artesia is coming off a 1-point win over El Paso-Eastwood while Carlsbad looked solid and scrappy in their win over Los Lunas. On the top half of the bracket Rio Rancho, coming off a two-point win over Roswell, clashes with SE opponent Hobbs. This one could be a crazy-quick, high scoring, contest.
3) Clovis traveling to Cleveland brings us a game between potential Elite Eight teams. Cleveland with a tough two game start to the season.
