NO. 19 WEST MESA MUSTANGS
2018 Season:
7-18 overall, 1-7 district Head Coach: Shonn Schroer

Scoop: The Mustangs finished the 2018/2019 season well higher than their projection going into the season. They started the season 6-4 and things appeared to be going as planned. Then June hit and they crumbled to a 1-14 record in the final games of the 2019 portion of the season. They return one of the top players in the classification, a spot up shooter in Eloy Medina (2020), who at 6-3 has some size and range to his game. Nice one-two dribble pull up at times. The bad news: he is 1 of 4 returning players off a team that went 7-18 last season. 19 plays it safe with the Mustangs at this point but then again Schroer has been known to have some solid bounce back years, he definitely can get players fired up.

Ceiling: Bubble Team (13-16). Finishing third in their district could get them in the 15/16 spots of the State Tournament. They finished last in 2019 but hopeful to beat out Piedra Vista (No. 22) and Farmington (23) this coming season.

Floor: Death Roll (20-27). The Mustangs ended up being the horse at the track whom either jumped the gate or experienced an injury, that, if you go to the track, never ends well. Let's hope this years race doesn't end with the same fate as last years. The issue, for the Mustangs, is that I see two or three teams in the 20-27 slots that could easily make a climb into the 13-16 or 17-19 slots.

Quick Prediction: 10-14 Regular Season. This is without breaking down the schedule but I could see them being 3 to 5 wins better this season.

Hidden Gems

What are some hidden gems or locations (or not so hidden gems) here in NM?

Las Vegas has Hermits Peak for hiking. Storrie lake is always fun to go and spend the day at.

Santa Rosa has the wibit park at Park Lake. Also has the Blue Hole and Santa Rosa Lake for fishing and boating.

Ruidoso recently opened their own wibit park.

I’ve been wanting to go and hike Tent Rocks. Anyone have experience with Tent Rocks?

NO. 2 ROSWELL COYOTES

TEAM SNAPSHOT
  • Head Coach: Jeff Lynn
  • 2018 Record: 11-2 Overall, 2-1 District
  • 2018 Post Season: State Championship (Won, Los Lunas 42-6); Semifinals (Won, Artesia 48-42); Quarterfinals (Won, Valley 49-8)
  • 3-Year Trend
    • 2017: 8-4 Overall (Semifinals)
    • 2016: 9-3 Overall (Semifinals)
    • 2015: 7-5 Overall (Quarterfinals)
OVERVIEW

Predicting the champion of the southeastern district (4-5A) is on the same level as predicting a state champion. Roswell, Goddard (No. 4), and if you are following along Artesia (No. 1) will all be in the crunch of things and like the 2018 season, all teams tied with a 2-1 record, we could see the same outcome in 2019. The bad news for the reigning 5A state champions: They lose Cade Manzanares, who became the first defensive player to win the Rivals New Mexico Mr. Football winner in 2018. They also will have to replace quarterback Ethan Valenzulea. The good news: Roswell returns super quick running back Jasia Reese (2020) and Roderick Sedillo (2020) both of which could carry the load of carries. Dominic Nava (2020/FS), Josh Castillo (2020/OG) and Isaac Hurst (2020/DE) also return to bolster plenty of experience moving forward.

REALISTIC EXPECTATIONS

8-wins. We are discussing regular season when we look at possible wins. I'll be honest here and say that I'm underselling how I feel about the Coyotes chances at repeating. I like the mixture of players returning, yes they will lose a lot in who graduated in May, but I think this sleeping giant is now awake. The ceiling: running it back as state champs. The floor: semifinals.

NM Combine Scholarship

Hi everyone, one Ironman scholarship available for the 2019 NM Preps Combine powered by The Performance Ranch!

Two of my sons attended past combines and had a great time meeting players from around the state. My son, Andrés, went to the very first combine and was awarded All Combine 1st Team. Now my oldest son, Estevan Lucero, is helping bring back this wonderful event.

The Ironman scholarship is open to one lucky LINEMAN. Yep. Chunky fat boys, this is for you. Please nominate someone that you feel does a good job representing his school and community and is deserving of this scholarship. The deadline is June 30th at 6pm.

Missed y’all HG13

Section 7 team camp

Cleveland, Volcano Vista, Santa Fe, and Los Lunas have all been invited to participate in the section 7 team camp which is a USA basketball sponsored event and a live watching period for college coaches. The Team camp was put together by former Clovis head coach Matt King and will take place in PHX, Arizona. This team camp will be a huge event and has over 100 teams from Nevada, Hawaii, Arizona, California, Texas, Utah and New Mexico. Should be a great opportunity for New Mexico kids to be recruited and play against a high level of competition. Team camp takes place June 21-23rd.
