The finalists, selected based on their performances throughout the season, represent the best of New Mexico high school basketball, showcasing elite skills, leadership, and game-changing ability.

This year’s finalists span multiple classifications, proving that talent is found at every level of competition. Here’s a closer look at the players competing for the title of Mr. Basketball in New Mexico.

The Finalists

Kenyon Aguino, Volcano Vista (5A)

Aguino was a force for the Hawks, leading one of the top teams in the state with his inside presence and ability to control the game on both ends of the floor. His size, skill, and leadership made him a dominant force in 5A.

Charlie Campbell, Artesia (4A)

Campbell powered Artesia with his all-around game, helping the Bulldogs remain a contender throughout the season. His scoring ability and leadership were instrumental in his team’s success.

Thomas Adams, Sandia (5A)

Adams was a key factor in Sandia’s deep postseason run, proving to be one of the best two-way players in the state. His athleticism and ability to score at all three levels made him a tough matchup every night.

Remy Albrecht, Cleveland (5A)

Albrecht’s ability to take over games with his scoring and playmaking made him a crucial piece for the Storm. His high basketball IQ and clutch performances solidified his place among the state’s best.

Abraham Pena, Hobbs (5A)

Pena helped carry the tradition of Hobbs basketball, showcasing elite shooting, quick decision-making, and a strong defensive presence. His ability to lead in high-pressure moments set him apart.

Jesus Licon, Highland (4A)

Licon was a standout for the Highland Hornets, displaying one of the most well-rounded games in the state. Whether it was scoring, passing, or defending, Licon was consistently one of the most impactful players on the court.

Jesse James Gonzales, Robertson (3A)

A leader for Robertson, Gonzales thrived in big moments, helping his team battle against top competition. His ability to score in bunches and control the game’s tempo made him a standout in Class 3A.

Jett Curtis, Texico (2A)

Curtis dominated at the 2A level, proving that talent shines at any classification. His high-scoring performances and leadership helped Texico remain one of the toughest small-school teams in New Mexico.

Hayden Bruhn, Logan (1A)

2024/2025 Preseason New Mexico High School Basketball Rankings and Players to Watch

The stage is set for another thrilling season of New Mexico high school basketball as NMPreps unveils the 2024/2025 preseason rankings and top players to watch. With powerhouse programs continuing their dominance and a fresh wave of talent ready to make their mark, this season promises to be one for the books.

3A Basketball

The Robertson Cardinals are looking to make their fourth consecutive trip to the state championship game — winning it all in 2022 before falling in the title game in 2023 and 2024. Do they get back on top? After going 27-3 last season, here's why we like them to make another run this year: the return of a trio of standouts. Jesse James Gonzales (2025) leads the speedy guard play, Nathaniel Gonzales (2025) shines as a versatile utility player, and Nathan Gonzales (2027) is emerging as one of the best big men in the classification, posting 8.1 PPG and 6 rebounds per game as a freshman.

After the Cardinals, it's a mixed bag of challengers. Santa Fe Indian has been a perennial threat under head coach Jason Abeyta, and this season should be no different despite losing key players from last year’s Final Four squad. The bright spot is the return of first-team all-state guard Kenyen Callado, a 6’1” sharpshooter who provides a strong offensive presence. The Braves finished last season 23-8 and were runners-up in the competitive District 2-3A behind Robertson.

The Bosque Bobcats face similar challenges, needing to replace their top two scorers. However, head coach Clifton Davidson — who led Bosque to a state title in 2020 — returns a talented roster. Josiah Wilson (2027), who averaged 8.4 PPG, 2.7 rebounds, and 1.7 assists, is poised for a breakout year. Oliver Tumolo (2025), who chipped in 7.1 PPG and 5.8 rebounds last season, also returns to bolster the lineup.

Hot Springs is another team favored to make another Final Four run after a strong 25-6 season. Head coach Derek Bean, a two-time state champion (2021, 2019), brings back senior Adrian Gomez (12.7 PPG) as a consistent scorer and introduces rising star Tristan Polanco (2026), who could be the Tigers’ breakout player. Hot Springs remains dominant in District 3-3A and is expected to continue that streak.

Rounding out the top five is St. Michael’s. The Horsemen, 2023 state champions, underperformed last season but look to rebound under new head coach Dakota Montoya. A talented core returns, including Reed Bass (2025), Donevan Ricker (2026), Ryan Hunt (2027), and athletic high-flyer Nick Angelley (2025).

With powerhouse programs continuing their dominance and a fresh wave of talent ready to make their mark, this season promises to be one for the books

5A Basketball

This marks the third straight season with the Volcano Vista Hawks sitting at No. 1. The Hawks are coming off a 30-1 overall season and state championship, their third consecutive state title. The Hawks are 88-2 over the three-year span without any slowing down in sight, boasting the top two ranked players in the state of New Mexico — 6-foot-7 forward Kenyon Anquino (2025), recently committed to the University of Montana. The Hawks also welcome back our second-ranked player in David Lunn, a 6-foot-4 wing with plenty of upside. This tandem has the opportunity to be one of the most talented teams in New Mexico in recent history.

Coming in ranked second in Class 5A basketball, a familiar name returns as Danny Brown (brother of Greg Brown, the head coach of Volcano Vista) will guide the Matadors back into the championship conversation after going 16-12 overall last season and reaching the quarterfinals. The Matadors return a talented duo in Thomas Adams (2025) and Zaire Ndyabagye (2025), who each had sound seasons for the Matadors last year. Coupled with those two are rising 2028 players, Gad Harris and Isaiah Brown, who each shined bright as 8th graders last season — Brown averaged 12 PPG.

The once-powerhouse Hobbs Eagles are back on the climb. After going 12-16 overall last season, the Eagles have turned over the job to former Eagles great Ronald Ross (who went on to have a stellar career at Texas Tech University). The roster is flooded with young talent, including 6-foot-11 Parker Henderson, who averaged 5.7 points and 6.6 rebounds last season but is expected to improve those numbers. Also back are leading scorers Braylon Vega (2026) and Abraham Pena (2025).

Rounding out the preseason top five are the Atrisco Heritage Jaguars and the Cleveland Storm. Atrisco Heritage, coming off a 22-9 overall season, looks to replace a talented roster, including four seniors who contributed significant minutes. Kadarius Sims (2025) becomes the leader as the senior-to-be averaged 11.7 PPG last season. Cleveland, meanwhile, looks to climb back into the conversation after a solid 22-win season, though they were upset as the No. 3 seed last March. They must replace the Steverson brothers but look to players like Remy Albrecht (2026), a two-year starter.

4A Basketball: 2024/2025 Preseason New Mexico High School Basketball Rankings

The stage is set for another thrilling season of New Mexico high school basketball as NMPreps unveils the 2024/2025 preseason rankings and top players to watch. With powerhouse programs continuing their dominance and a fresh wave of talent ready to make their mark, this season promises to be one for the books.

4A Basketball

The Highland Hornets went 26-6 last season, capturing the 4A state championship with a thrilling one-point win over Valley. Although they face the challenge of replacing star graduate Raul Stanford, the Hornets remain title contenders if a healthy Jesus Licon (2025) returns. Licon, one of New Mexico’s top 10 players, averaged an astounding 28.8 PPG, 5 RPG, and 2.5 APG. Alongside Isai Herrera (2025) and Sebastian Hernandez (2025), the Hornets have the depth and experience to stay atop 4A basketball. Head coach Justin Woody continues to build on his program’s dominance, positioning Highland as a Final Four team yet again.

2025 New Mexico Miss Basketball Finalists Announced

The New Mexico Miss Basketball award, recognizing the top high school girls' basketball player in the state, has been narrowed down to seven elite finalists. Each of these standout student-athletes has left an undeniable mark on the 2025 season.

The Finalists

Sydney Benally, Sandia HS (5A)

Benally was the heart and soul of Sandia’s back-to-back state championship teams, leading the Matadors with 20 points per game. Her ability to take over in crucial moments and her leadership on both ends of the floor made her one of the most dominant players in the state. She is the 2024 winner.

Rylie Whitehair, Gallup HS (4A)

Whitehair delivered when it mattered most, guiding Gallup to the Class 4A state championship. She had a 17-point, 12-rebound performance in the title game, proving to be a dominant presence in the paint and a key reason the Bengals brought home the trophy.

Jordan Dyer, La Cueva HS (5A)

A prolific scorer, Dyer averaged 20.5 points per game, leading La Cueva to the Final Four in Class 5A. Her ability to score at all three levels and her consistency throughout the season made her one of the top offensive threats in the state.

Bhret Clay, Hobbs HS (5A)

Clay was the undisputed leader of the Hobbs Eagles, guiding them to the 5A state championship game. Her strong all-around game and ability to rise to the occasion in big moments solidified her place among the state’s best.

Alexis Pacheco, West Las Vegas HS (3A)

Pacheco led the Dons to the Class 3A state championship game, averaging an impressive 21.1 points per game. A dynamic playmaker and scorer, she dominated at the 3A level, proving she could compete with anyone in the state.

Louann Villasenor, Tatum HS (2A)

Villasenor was a double-double machine, leading Tatum to the 2A state championship with 16 points and 11 rebounds per game. Her ability to control the game in the paint made her one of the most dominant post players in the state.

Harper Dunn, Corona HS (1A)

Dunn put up jaw-dropping numbers, averaging 22.2 points, 19.8 rebounds, and 7.5 blocks per game while leading Corona/Vaughn to the 1A quarterfinals. Her defensive presence and dominance in the post made her nearly unstoppable.

Thank you!

I want to give a huge shoutout to my guy Anthony Johnson @AJohns2107 —non-stop coverage, same seat for five straight days, 38 games! This marked NMPreps’ 17th year at the state tournament, and we truly appreciate everyone who followed along with us.

Our goal has always been to highlight our student-athletes, and this week is just the tip of the iceberg. We’re in The PIT at 6:45 AM and don’t leave until 10 PM, and I couldn’t do it without you, Johnson!

COVID hit our site hard, but we’re hopeful for an 18th year at state basketball in 2026 and, this fall, NMPreps.com’s 20th season covering football! Please keep sharing and spreading our content to help keep us going.

I hope you all enjoyed the write-ups and highlights—posted minutes after each game! Thank you for being part of NMPreps—your subscription goes a long way in supporting what we do!
