Thursday Outlet Pass

Another tournament heavy week will feature numerous teams across the state earning resume wins before a colder stretch of December hoops begins.
  • What games will you be seeing?
  • What tournaments will you be watching closely?
Interesting First Round Tournament Matchups

Santa Fe's Capital City - Portales vs. St. Michael's
After starting 0-2 the Lady Rams of Portales are looking for their first win of the season and will hope to get it on the road against a deceptively skilled St. Michael's team. St. Michael's will once again look to Joelyn Fernandez while Portales will likely look to Taylee Rippee on the interior.

Artesia's City of Champions - Artesia vs. Ruidoso
Artesia will look to continue their 1-0 start at their home tournament against a scrappy Ruidoso team. The Lady Bulldogs are led by Paityn Houghtaling, a 5'9" senior who is a double-double threat. She'll be helped by a 5-foot Kyrah Gonzales who has shown her ability to score by putting up 15 points in their first game this season.

Gallup's John Lomasney Invitational - Miyamura vs. Piedra Vista
Piedra Vista heads down to Gallup to face off against a tough Miyamura team who dominated in their win at Window Rock (Arizona). Again, the Lady Panthers will look to transfers Lanae Billy and Tiontai Woods from Shiprock as they'll have to match up against Odessa Begay and Autumn Enote on the Lady Patriots.

Melrose's American Heritage Bank - Clovis Christian vs. Cliff
Cliff is 4-0 and looking to make it 5-0 against a Clovis Christian team just off of beating Portales' junior varsity squad.

Brian Gallegos Lady Dons Shootout - West LV vs. Dexter
Both teams are looking to bounce back from tough losses: Dexter in the Taos' Consolation final and West against Tucumcari. A win here and over the weekend could create some momentum.

Santa Rosa's Lady Lion Classic - Newcomb vs. Tularosa
Newcomb's new head coach, Bill McLaughlin has the Lady Skyhawks moving in the right direction and looking to make an impression on the road. Tulie is just off an unfortunate blowout loss against a tough Alamogordo team, but will look to regroup in this tournament.

J.P. Stone Invitational - Pine Hill vs. Dora
Dora might be in for a surprise as Pine Hill is heading into the tournament 3-1 and just off a runner-up finish in Magadalena's tourney. Though this will be Dora's first game, they're the host an should feel good heading into this season opener.

Non-Tournament Marquee Games

Highland at Rio Rancho
Cailee Crawford and the Lady Hornets will take on former preseason favorite Rio Rancho. The Lady Rams will have to go the rest of the season without 6'4" center Mitchel Mortensen, an integral part of the Rio Rancho team. The Lady Rams will likely look more to the triumvirate guard rotation of Laura Gutierrez, Michaela Meyer, and Julia Chavez.

Los Lunas at West Mesa
Coming off a win scoring 70 points, the Lady Mustangs will face their first early season test against a stingy Los Lunas team that has found ways to win against tough teams. Los Lunas has won games by only margins of 6 and 4 points. Their lone loss is to Centennial by four while the two wins were against Las Cruces and Mayfield. I'm not sure the Lady Tigers can run with West Mesa given West Mesa's scoring options. Therefore, if Los Lunas can keep it close, maybe they can pick up another big 5A win.

Hope Christian at Cibola
Cibola will look to bounce back from their Highland loss to upend Hope Christian's plans to start the season with a win. Hope Christian is looking to start off the season differently than last year's 0-3 start and sub .500 finish. A Lady Cougars win here will help them gain some footing on the season heading towards a Saturday game at La Cueva.

Daily Dimes: Thursday Hoops

GAME I LIKE
Volcano Vista (1-0) at Hope Christian (0-0)
Gallup (0-0) at Carlsbad (2-2)
Capital (3-1) vs Alamogordo (0-2): (SFHS Tournament)
Atrisco Heritage vs West Mesa
Roswell (2-0) vs St. Michael's (1-0) (SFHS Tournament)
St. Pius (1-1) vs Silver (1-0)
Hobbs (2-1) at Los Lunas (1-0)

SCOOP
Plenty of new match ups with a North vs South flavor. Hobbs and Los Lunas bring plenty of intriguing as the top ranked (4A) Los Lunas Tigers get to square off with Hobbs - looking to re-establish. Gallup, ranked high in 4A, gets the opportunity to open with a win over Carlsbad - expect this one to be uptempo to the max.

New Mexico Tournaments

I am currently working on my final project for my International Sport Event Management class. I have to write a proposal for why Albuquerque should host an international sporting event. I chose the U-18 World Baseball Cup. I need to know what national or international baseball tournaments are held in New Mexico to show how popular the sport has become in New Mexico. If you could post any tournament that is a national or international tournament I would greatly appreciate it.

This is what I have so far:

Connie Mack World Series
USSSA Global World Series Southwest Tournament Ages 5-12

Tuesday Night Lineup

Here's some intriguing matchups tonight.

Kirtland Central at Piedra Vista
This is a great opener for PV who I'm expecting big things from this season. They'll have the returning talents of Hallie Blackie, Reagan Schmidt, and Alexis Long. Meanwhile, with a new head coach in Devon Manning, KC should expect to continue their hot start with the likes of Siigrid Lii'bilnaghahi and Tiajhae Nez.

Tularosa at Alamogordo
I'm curious to see how high Tulie's ceiling is with this matchup against a really tough Alamogordo squad. The Lady Wildcats will be led by four-year varsity experienced, Ember Cervantes and junior Shacie Marr. Alamogordo is paced by the talents of Faith Silva who is averaging 22 points through two games this season.

Silver at Deming
Two of Week 1's tournament champions will face off Tuesday night each with talent to put on display. Two of the best players in that part of the state (outside of Las Cruces) are Silver's Kaitlyn Limardo (Jr.) and Deming's newest freshman sensation Harmanie Dominguez. They'll collide in what will look like fun rivalry. At least for this year and next.

Mayfield at Los Lunas
Mayfield is definitely looking to bounce back after their game against Hobbs. Los Lunas is also looking to rebound after their close loss to Centennial. Winner here could find some early season momentum before heading into the turbulent December travel.

Elida at Mescalero Apache
This should be telling. Sure, it's early, but with both teams in separate classes (Mescalero moved up to 2A) it should still prove to be a quality test for both teams. Fallon Velasquez will lead a young but strong core of Lady Chiefs. Elida will likely be led by stellar sophomore Alyssa Bargas.

USMNT Coach...or is he?

So we all saw the news that Greg Berhalter has been named as the new USMNT coach.

There are lots of talking points here like why him? Why did the federation take 14 months? Why wasnt someone like Tata Martino even interviewed?

Well, that could fill a few days worth of back and forth, but the new today out of ESPN Deportes is even bigger: http://netnoticias.mx/2018-12-04-72...-sera-entrenador-de-estados-unidos-en-un-ano/

I havent found a matching English article but if anyone needs a quick summary:

Basically, the article says that Berhalter is on a 1yr contract with the USMNT and that former Chivas coach and new SJ Earthquakes coach Matias Almeyda will be the new USMNT coach after he completes ONE season in the MLS. I heard the news on the radio, and had to do a search when I got home. Maybe in a few days some of the English speaking networks/publications will pick this up and maybe shed some more info.

Very interesting if this indeed true.

College football coaching hotseats

Another big domino drops today as Bobby Petrino is out at Louisville, and it has already been reported that Kansas will fire David Beaty at the end of the season. Add to those to the list of the firing of DJ Durkin from Maryland earlier this year.
