Daily Dimes: Saturday Hoops Schedule

Bobby Rodriguez Capital City Invite - Santa Fe HS
The Santa Fe Demons will take on Roswell for the Championship. This is the second championship in as many weeks for the Demons program who won the Al Armendariz tournament last week. Dominic Nava (Roswell) had a solid showing last night against Capital in a 68-66 win. Valencia and Capital will square off for third place - Valencia fell to Santa Fe 71-56. Garrett Wade had a coming out party with 30 points last night for Valencia, he will go against TJ Sanchez who dropped 20 for Capital. Santa Fe Indian school, led by James Bridges, will take on St. Michael's for 5th place. Alamogordo and Los Alamos will play in the 7th place game.

City of Champions Tournament - Artesia HS
Rio Rancho and Los Lunas will battle for the title in this contest. Los Lunas beat Gallup and Hobbs on their way to the final game. Rio Rancho ran over Lovington and followed it will a win over host Artesia. Gallup and Artesia square off in the third place game for a resume game, an early one, but with the criteria as it is this could be one that we use. Hobbs and Deming for fifth and Carlsbad should move along against Lovington for 7th.

More Games Around the State
Eldorado (2-0) at Mayfield (2-2): Will the Eldorado Eagles led by their duo in Valencia and Quintana roll over D-1 signee Jorell Saterfield and the Trojans.

La Cueva (0-1) vs Clovis (1-1): Clovis battled tough against La Cueva last night, can they earn a December resume win? Will La Cueva rebound after an opening loss to Volcano Vista earlier this week.

Onate (2-2) at Sandia (0-2): Onate has some weapons and could be the sleeper, Sandia is about as expected.

Hope Christian (0-1) at Atrisco Heritage (2-1): This one is top-3 to watch today. Hope is a defending champ, Atrisco is a defending champ.

Highland (1-0) at Belen (3-1): Highland is playing well under head coach Justin Woody, today would be a huge step forward. Belen dropped it's first game this week but should be fine at home.

West Las Vegas (2-0) at Santa Rosa (2-0): Both undefeated as they play in a Saturday championship in Las Vegas. Both could use the win for the resume.

Week Two: Saturday Matinee

Key Tournament Championships

Hobbs vs. Idalou (TX)
If Hobbs comes away with this, it might be the most impressive Texas run for a New Mexico school in some time. Hobbs definitely looked dominant and it should reflect in this upcoming week's rankings.

Deming vs. Seminole (TX)
7-0. The last time Deming was even 6-0 was 2008 according to the Deming Headlight (think Coach Jerome Sandoval). This is their toughest test, I believe. This Seminole squad went back and forth with a Carlsbad team that looked like they had the game in hand. Another tournament championship and Deming might find themselves sitting in the Top 10.

Robertson vs. Portales
These two teams have put on some great games these past two seasons. And although they're in different classes now, this next one means a lot if we're looking ahead to who could win their district. (Please someone tell me how Robertson matches up with Taylee Rippee).

Gallup vs. Piedra Vista
Old district foes now look to new chapter with PV in 5A and Gallup in 4A. PV with a big win over a previously undefeated Alamogordo team looks to build an early strong resume with a win in one of the toughest places to play. Gallup has the comfort of home and should clearly look to earn a big win to help their rankings come later this month.

Tatum vs. Pine Hill
Pine Hill ran off with two straight games against host Dora and the tri-op Grady/San Jon/House. Now they'll definitely face a real test in a Tatum team that just put away a tough Logan team fairly easy. It's a great early season measuring stick for Pine Hill, but I'd be just as shocked as you to see an upset here.

Quick Timeout

1A girls are winning some big games. Cliff is 6-0 and heading to another tournament championship. Cimarron just blew out Raton in a win in the Cowbel semis. Tatum is back from their Texas tour and in a championship final. Des Moines is on a 3-game winning streak at 4-1. Pine Hill just ran their way past Dora and a tri-op to face Tatum. And Animas is 3-2 but all their games have been against varsity teams and two losses against higher classes (none by more than 10 points).
Reclassification and realignment may have made 1A girls more exciting especially for the Friday 1A championship in March.

  • What tournament will you find yourself at this Saturday?
  • Is there any must-see matchup (tournament or not) I didn't list above?

Tremendous News for NM & NM Schools

According to a current news release...The new estimations of Permian Basin (Lea, Eddy, West Texas) oil and gas currently are 46.3 billion barrels of oil, 281 trillion cubic feet of natural gas and 20 billion barrels of natural gas liquids. This will allow for huge amounts of cash support to the state of NM and most importantly it's schools which helps with athletic programs. Which of course means sports teams have more secure futures from distributions. Hobbs is in boom town mode again with over 300 new houses recently constructed and already sold plus about 1,200 more planned or under construction. There are five major subdivisions currently in progress which has never happened before. One problem as I see it...Hobbs will have to start planning another high school soon even though nobody wants another one. I just do not see any way out of it even if they build a proposed trade/tech school.
