A handful of games on the schedule tonight in New Mexico High School basketball. With a couple weeks left in the season some teams are still fighting for a bid, the district championship or a home-game in the first round.
NOTES
District Championship Battle: Los Lunas at Belen. The Valencia County war will be for the 5-5A when the dust settles. Also, a top-4 seed could be in play or will be in play.
Under-the-Radar: Atrisco Heritage at West Mesa, La Cueva at Santa Fe, Capital at Del Norte, Santa Fe Indian at East Mountain. West Mesa looking to make a splash as they head into the postseason. Santa Fe could shake up things in 2-6A or La Cueva rebounds after a loss to Manzano last week. Del Norte could make it interesting and if they do they could jump in the rankings. Santa Fe Indian has been a slumping team after a decent start until December. This one went into OT last time.
Fighting for a Home Game: Albuquerque at Valley. Both teams looking for the DRUP position in 4-6A and a chance for a first-round home game. The team that drops to third could be on the road in the opening round.
Seed Position: Valencia at St. Pius X, Dexter at Eunice, Portales at Moriarty, Gateway Christian at Hagerman. Valencia would like to stay in the 9-12 range and things are shifting nightly in 5A basketball. St. Pius X in play for a first round home game. Dexter and Eunice are on the first-round home game fringe. Eunice and a dip for a couple weeks, Dexter has started to play well. Gateway Christian was the talk about being a top-8 team but suffering a 3-game losing streak. Hagerman playing off the bubble as they took the first meeting. Moriarty and Portales will likely both be in the 4-5 range but would like to avoid dropping into the 6-7 range.
Swing for the Fence: Sandia at Eldorado, Sandia Prep vs Bernalillo, Carlsbad at Las Cruces. Sandia needs a hail Mary as they are on the bubble on the verge it popping. Sandia Prep could make some noise if they pull an upset. Bernalillo is playing for a 1-seed. Carlsbad is on the bubble fringe at 17. They need a home run and this would be that hit. Las Cruces is the best team in the state and looking to secure their 1-seed, some coaches still voting against the team with a perfect record. (collusion for your district).
Bubble Buster: Los Alamos at Albuquerque Academy, Farmington at Kirtland Central, Manzano at Clovis. Los Alamos like other early peak teams has slumped. This would pop the bubble Farmington has been on the bubble all season but another upset against KC would put them back into the conversation. Manzano has played in but Clovis the bubble out, around 18, could play back into the conversation.
