Week 13: Friday Guide

Pick a Potential Upset: Goddard rebounding vs Artesia. Artesia is coming off a huge win over Roswell - Goddard is 0-2 to start district. I wouldn't be shocked.

Best Game: Rio Rancho at Cleveland or Las Cruces at Hobbs. Potential for four teams that will certainly be playing on the Wednesday of the state tournament in Albuquerque. Rio Rancho and Cleveland has been close for years and should be just as fun tonight.

Bubble-Tastic- Piedra Vista hosting Cibola for a chance at 16.

Surprisingly Close: Onate at Carlsbad. Carlsbad is fighting for the bid.

Under-the-Radar Game: Gallup at Farmington. Fast, uptempo and high energy game in the four corners.

Anthony Chavez, 2018, Valley
Skinny: A big month for Chavez, committing to UNM, but he has games of 25 points, 20 points and 17 points. The big one was a 20 point, 11 rebound and 7 assist game.

Jose Vigil, 2018, West Mesa
Skinny: The West Mesa Mustangs are having a great rebound season and looking to make a bid to the state tournament. Vigil has had solid performances this season. He had a 18 point, 7 rebound, 4 assist game early in January over a top-5 team. He's also seen 19 point, 5 rebound, 5 assist or a 17 point game this month.

Joziah Ramos, 2020, Atrisco Heritage
Skinny: The top ranked prospect from the 2020 class is leading the 3rd ranked Atrisco Jaguars this season. The top game was a 33 point performance in January. He continues to lead in scoring with 21 point and 17 point performances.

Week 13: Thursday Guide

Best Games: Valley (12-7) at Atrisco Heritage Academy (17-2), Volcano Vista (14-5) at Cleveland (14-7), Quemado (16-4) at Reserve (16-5). Atrisco can close out the regular season district championship with a win here. The battle I love is Joziah Ramos (AHA) vs Anthony Chavez (Valley). Volcano Vista controls first place in 1-6A and can continue its bid for a top-4 seed. Quemado and Reserve meet for the third game between the two. Quemado took the first game, 62-43 and six days later lost 57-52. This is the third game in 12-days between the two.

Under-the-Radar: St. Pius X (12-7) at Grants (9-11), Dora (14-6) at Mountainair (11-9), Menaul (17-3) at Alamo Navajo (12-7). Grants and St. Pius X are set for the rematch. Pius took the opener, 56-52 in Albuquerque behind a 20-point 4th quarter run (41-36 Grants lead after three). Grants is still fighting for their playoff bid but playing well as of late. Dora and Mountainair is a district game, Dora is the favorite and ranked 6th in the NMPreps.com Top-10 (2A). Mountainair is coming off an upset win over Logan last week. Menaul is the top-3 ranked team in 2A and Alamo Navajo a back eight team looking for an upset.

NMPreps.com Preseason Rankings

(1) Goddard Rockets (Last season: 25-6, 10-2): The Goddard Rockets return a wealthy roster behind a power foursome. The question for the defending champs will be around a new head coach. Look for Cameron Stevenson, Ty Villareal, and Tyler Hardwick.

(2) Albuquerque Academy Chargers (Last season: 23-8, 11-1): The Chargers will start where they finished last season as the number two team in 5A. UNM commit AJ Bregman and Chase Weissenborn return to create a solid duo from a team that graduated four.

(3) St. Pius X Sartans (Last season: 19-10, 11-1): Might be one of the most talented teams in terms of depth. Look for McGaha, Lackner and Smith. The Sartans reached the Final Four last season and could be a team that is somewhat slighted at 3.

(4) Miyamura Patriots (Last season: 17-11, 7-3): The Patriots made a final four run last season as an 8-seed. They could be the sleeper again this season. Brandon Vidal and Matt Chavez return for the Patriots along with a young, but talented, roster.

(5) Artesia Bulldogs (Last season: 16-13, 9-3): If Miyamura is the sleeper the dark horse title will reside with the Artesia Bulldogs to start the season. They return a 2019 core - J.R. Bustamante, Trent Taylor, and Favian Carrasco.

THE REST

(6) Valencia Jaguars (Last season: 12-17, 5-3)
(7) Santa Teresa Desert Warriors (Last season: 15-15, 6-6)
(8) Farmington Scorpions (Last season: 14-15, 6-4)
(9) Belen Eagles (Last season: 13-13, 3-5)
(10 Grants Pirates (Last season: 11-13, 4-4)
