Games to watch -- week of Oct. 9

At this point in the season, focus turns to district placement, which is a big factor in state seeding. This includes paying attention to the tiebreakers, starting with head-to-head and goal differential among the tied teams. Remember that the NMAA uses the standard soccer system of 3 points for a win, 1 point for a draw, so the order that the district standings are listed in in MaxPreps (which is based on winning percentage and ignores draws) is not always accurate.

Monday:
Hope Christian (14-1) at Farmington (9-3-2). Hope is ranked No. 5 in the state, regardless of class. Their only loss was to Academy.

Tuesday:
Valencia (6-8-1) at St. Pius (8-3-3). St. Pius should cruise to the district title, and Valencia (3-1) is currently just ahead of Los Lunas (2-2) for second. Valencia played SPX fairly close in their last matchup, falling 4-3.
Academy (10-4-2) at Capital (11-4-1). Academy took care of business at home against Capital and Los Alamos, but has to travel to face both rivals this week.
Hobbs (11-2-2) at Gadsden (10-6). Hobbs (7-0-1 in district) holds a narrow lead over Mayfield (7-1). Gadsden (5-4-1) has two-point lead over Las Cruces (4-3-1) for third.
Chaparral (9-7) at Santa Teresa (9-4-1). A lot yet to be determined in this district. In a four-team district like this one (and 2-5A and 4-5A), every district game is crucial. Chaparral has a narrow lead over ST and Deming for second, and this is the first meeting of these two teams.

Wednesday:
Sandia (6-8) vs. Eldorado (8-4-2). Current standings in 2-6A have La Cueva (5-0-1), Eldorado (4-1-1), Sandia (4-2), Clovis (3-3). Eldorado won the first meeting with Sandia, 5-2. Props to the Matadors, which started 0-5, but are now right in the playoff picture. Their problem is that their poor start means that they are only No. 17 in MaxPreps in 6A, so they need to finish second in the district to have a good chance at state. Eldorado had a damaging loss at Clovis last week.

Thursday:
St. Pius at Los Lunas (8-8)
. Remember that St. Pius has not yet lost to a New Mexico team.
Volcano Vista (10-3-1) at Rio Rancho (11-4-2). In 1-6A, Volcano is 3-1 while both Rio Rancho and Cleveland are 3-1-1. Rio Rancho won the first meeting with Volcano, 3-0.
Highland (8-4-1) at Atrisco Heritage (5-6-2). Highland is a good story. Two years ago, they were 2-16. They started 1-3 this year, but are 7-1-1 since, including a close 2-1 loss to Albuquerque High. But it is no guarantee that this district will get two teams in the tournament. Highland is No. 11 in MaxPreps. Right now Highland is second in the district at 3-1-1 while Atrisco is 2-3, and they play twice in three days, due to a rescheduled rainout.

Friday:
Hope Christian at Portales (6-6)
. You wonder if one of these long road trips will catch up to Hope. The Huskies have been to Farmington (twice), Roswell, and Ruidoso, and this trip to Portales comes right after a trip to Farmington on Monday.
Academy at Los Alamos (12-5). Academy not only has a win right now over Los Alamos but is plus-two in the head-to-head tiebreaker, so Los Alamos has some work to do.

Saturday:
Sandia vs. La Cueva (10-0-3)
. Sandia had La Cueva down 2-0 in the second half last week before giving up the lead and the game.
Chaparral at Alamogordo (12-3-1). This is Alamo’s last home game before ending the season with games at Santa Teresa and Deming. Alamo is in the discussion for the No. 1 seed at state.
Mayfield at Gadsden
Atrisco Heritage at Highland

10 Things Going Into The Season

10 Things Going Into The Season

1. Who is this year's Cinderella in 6A?
Last season it was 12-seed Volcano Vista. In 2016 it was 11-seed Rio Rancho. If we had to pick a Cinderella or dark horse going into the season the likes of Atrisco Heritage Academy, Clovis or a Manzano could peak the interest. We are not talking favorites here.

2. Defending champion that will do it again in 2018?
We know the norm with Hope Christian. Roswell returns one of the top players in the state in 6-foot-7 Logan Eaker but a new head coach could create a challenge. Volcano Vista in 6A lost a heck of a player in David Cormier. Maybe, Pecos is the next obvious choice not named Hope. They return Mario Archuleta and Carlos Cordova.

3. Who is the early season Mr. Basketball favorites?
If I had to pick. I might not pick the biggest name out there, big as in tallest. I might go with Markus Collins of Las Cruces. Plenty of names we are well aware of in Anthony Chavez (Valley), Marlon Cunningham (Albuquerque) or Taylor Turner (Cleveland) but we've liked Collins. The Bulldawgs could also be playing on the final day.

4. Possibly lead the state in scoring?
The 6-foot-4 guard from Piedra Vista in Jarrett Graham will be a name that shines this season. Yes, it has for two years now but the senior farewell will shoot his way into any game.

5. A team that will be the most exciting to watch and could average 100-points?
Are we reaching? Yes, but make sure your defense is not reaching or they'll be teaching. Cleveland added the top-ranked player in the state in Taylor Turner. This team has plenty of weapons. Turner, Jalen Munn (Jr), Aamer Muhammad (Jr) and Jayden Phillps (Sr) lead a talented bunch.

6. Best district in 6A basketball?
The obvious will again be 1-6A but 4-6A will be sneaky good. It will also be a district that shouldn't surprise with post season success. Valley, West Mesa, and Albuquerque should be postseason plus two teams.

7. Is there a favorite in 5A basketball?
Roswell, as mentioned returns a stud in Eaker but as mentioned they have to replace a head coach and couple key players. Kirtland Central returns a nice roster, along with Los Lunas featuring one a player with a high-ceiling in Zanen Zeller. Belen had success last season and with a new head coach, they will be on the look-out. Alamogordo was on the verge last season, they return some athletes.

8. Any hope in 4A basketball?
Portales seemed the top choice last season. They made it fun. Silver returns Tristin Moore and Sal Cruz. Robertson lost a key player this Fall but return Arjay Ortiz. Not to sure if the title leaves the Huskies unless Murphy left and last we check he didn't.

9. 2A basketball has an opening?
Lordsburg won it all. They graduated it all. Mesilla Valley made a surprising run. Magdalena still has Jorrell Mirabal. Are there more teams that could make a run?

10. The best thing about Fall?
Nope, not pumpkin spice lattes. I go - Indoor concession food (Yes, I've been waiting). Benches to sit on. Goodbye sidelines where I almost get hit. Oh and the great game of basketball. Can you feel it in the air?

Add some more things that we've clearly missed.
