Games to watch -- week of Oct. 2

District play really heats up this week. We will know a lot more about the likely state tournament seeds by the end of this week.

Note that all games are taken from the schedules listed on MaxPreps. Some of the games canceled last week may not have the rescheduled dates on MaxPreps yet. Please chime in with schedule corrections, or to mention other games you are interested in.

Tuesday:
Los Alamos (11-4) at Academy (7-4-2). Los Alamos beat Academy last year on Academy’s home field; if they can do it again, they would be in the driver’s seat in 2-5A. But the Hilltoppers did not exactly dominate in their home district opener against Del Norte on Saturday, winning 2-1. This district has a chance to get all four teams into the state tournament.
Clovis (8-6) at La Cueva (7-0-3). La Cueva lost its first-team all-state forward, JoJo Keller, to an apparent season-ending injury last week. We will see how that affects the rest of the season for the Bears – if any team is deep enough to survive the loss of one player, it’s La Cueva. The Bears are undefeated but at the moment are in second place in their district – Eldorado is 3-0-1 while La Cueva is 2-0-1. Clovis needs a marquee win to improve its chances for state.
Alamogordo (10-3-1) at Chaparral (8-6). This district has some big games this week. Chapa likely needs to beat Alamo at home to have a shot at the district title.
Roswell (8-5) at Artesia (8-7-1). Roswell, like Farmington and St. Pius, is a clear favorite in a mediocre district. This might be the best chance for a district foe to beat the Coyotes. It’s not too early to think about who is on the bubble for state – Artesia, No. 12 in MaxPreps for 5A, is right on that bubble.
Albuquerque High (9-1-1) at Atrisco Heritage (4-5-2). Atrisco was thought to be a state title contender early on but now they are coming off district losses to West Mesa and Rio Grande. If they don’t leapfrog some teams in their district, they might not make it to state.
Gadsden (9-5) at Las Cruces (8-5-1). Gadsden is probably out of the district title race after their loss to Onate. Las Cruces is in third right now and has a loss to Gadsden, which may end up mattering for tie-breaker purposes.

Wednesday:
West Mesa (5-5-1) at Rio Grande (4-7-1). West Mesa, a 4-14 team last year, actually has a shot at the state tourney this year.

Thursday:
Cleveland (8-3-4) at Volcano Vista (8-3-1). The early 1-6A standings have Cleveland and Rio Rancho tied at 2-0-1, with Volcano Vista at 2-1.
Valley (6-6) at Atrisco Heritage.

Saturday:
Farmington (7-2-2) at Academy. The Scorps get a chance to show they belong on the big stage in 5A. This is shakeout Saturday in 5A, with three different games on the schedule featuring two top-8 teams.
Rio Rancho (10-3-2) at Cleveland.
Santa Teresa (9-3) at Alamogordo. Biggest game of the year thus far for both teams. 5A’s No. 2 vs. No. 3. Santa Teresa has won eight straight games. If Alamo loses at Chaparral on Tuesday, this would be a must-win for them. Santa Teresa beat Alamo 2-1 on a neutral field earlier in the season. It’s possible that the No. 2 team in this district will get a top 4 seed at state (or the No. 2 in 2-5A), ahead of Farmington and Roswell.
Las Cruces at Hobbs (10-2-2). Hobbs is 6-0-1 in its district, with the only blemish being a 1-1 tie with Las Cruces in their first meeting.
Eldorado (7-3-2) at Clovis.
Los Alamos at Capital (10-3-1). Tough week for Los Alamos, which has road games at both Academy and Capital. I’m not convinced Capital is a real title contender, despite their record. Not much scoring punch.

6-0 Eunice Recording Unheard of Stats

Besides having one of the nicest stadiums in the state and having the nicest field house in the state they are also displaying some just jaw dropping numbers. Against Tucumcari they allowed exactly one first down and that came on a penalty for running into the punter. The Rattlers had zero rushing/passing first downs. Their longest gain for the night was seven yards. Tucumcari's total yards for the night was five. Five. That is just barely more than 1 yard per quarter average. Not only have the Cardinals not lost a single game in their new stadium (3-0) the defense has not allowed a single offensive point to be scored in that new home. Eunice's three home games have been 42-2, 49-0 and 54-0 which was called in the 3rd quarter. Amazing stats. The 3A showdown between the Cardinals (6-0) away at Capitan (6-0) coming up next should be fascinating as it is a rematch of last year's title game.
