The state budget "crisis" and the APS budget "crisis" should be resolved fairly quickly. I am hoping that all of those "overpaid" administrators at APS that people complain about have a contingency plan to also quickly renew APS middle school sports. The news (especially today) has a bright financial horizon. The petroleum industry and other energy industries are making a huge come back.

Consider todays news stories...major multinational energy companies have spent more than $13 billion in recent months on assets in this state alone. This will produce much greater revenues for the state. The value of land for the Permian Basin (Lea & Eddy counties/West Texas) oil fields has increased rapidly. That acreage is now going for twice the amount that it was just last September. $13B is a huge number when you consider that NM recently tried to sell its soul to Tesla for a $10B investment that went to another state.

"New Mexico also led the nation last week in the number of new rigs and state officials have been pulling in record earnings during monthly lease sales. The State Land Office is on track to exceed projections for this fiscal year by tens of millions of dollars." The EnergyPlex (Hobbs & Lea County) has survived well the recent downturns by keeping huge amounts of money squirreled away for ebbs and flows. The city even had enough excess funds to contribute $25M as their part of the $65M for the Center of Recreational Excellence known as CORE. The state was not that smart of course. Nearly 1/3 of the state's total revenues come for the oil and gas industries.

In the Northwest Hilcorp Energy bought $3 billion in natural gas assets from ConocoPhillips which shows their belief that New Mexico's energy resources will be robust again. In a related story the largest check ever issued to NM from energy resources will soon be received in Santa Fe for $72M. The largest amount ever in the country of $78M was previously issued to another state. So, the recovering numbers are huge. The disaster is over. The state and APS needs to calm down.

In a related income story today...Hobbs Mayor Sam Cobb help break the ground for a $400 million dollar Xcel Energy "super-highway of electricity" dubbed as the "Power of the Plains" corridor connecting Texas with New Mexico. This is a program to greatly increase Xcel's ability to supply power to the area. The EnergyPlex already has 4 large electricity plants. About 90 miles of this new system will be built in Lea County with the remaining miles being in adjacent counties to NM's Lea County. In the nuclear categories...WIPP has now reopened and the approvals process for the new nuclear depository in Lea County is going well. Bottom line is that things are now going very well and this revenue "crisis" that everyone is wringing their hands over is about to be over. APS should not drop middle school sports. If they do they need a contingency plan to reinstate them quickly.

Hot Springs Hires Ex-Tiger Derek Bean

The Hot Springs Tigers have hired former Hatch Valley Bears head coach and ex-Hot Springs Tiger Derek Bean to become the next head coach. The Tigers finished 8-19 and 1-8 in District 3-4A in 2016/2017 and failed to make the post season.

Coach Bean: "Well first off I'm super happy to be back on the sidelines again. A chance to lead my hometown is a neat opportunity. The support I've already received on coming home has been amazing. There have been some good coaches come through this program and I am excited to etch my name to the list. Obviously, the biggest one that stands out is Coach Morrow with his championship run, Coach Olney being another and I have to bring up Trampus Pierson who got me started in all of this coaching as an assistant here. Now it's my time to shine as the hometown boy leading the Tigers.

The biggest thing I'm looking forward to is getting in the gym and hitting the ground running. The boys are chomping at the bit to get going and learn the new system. We will be busy this summer as I'm already looking to jump into summer camps. Taking last in the district didn't sit well with the guys so we look to make sure that doesn't happen again. There is a solid group of youngsters here that are hungry and wanna see themselves in the postseason as do I!

This is a little old, but reminded me of the Oñate forfeit/unforfeit situation.

This seems like it was an "adult" mistake (and it was) but in this situation the team got punished with minimal public outcry. Plus, this was in a state playoff game.
