Week 14: Tuesday Night Recap

Plenty of girls hoops Tuesday night with the final week of district coming to a close. Some though may still have a playoff game to be played.

District's Clinched

West Mesa - District 4-6A

Alamogordo - District 3-5A

Los Lunas - District 5-5A

Shiprock – District 1-4A

Silver – District 3-4A

Hope Christian – District 4-4A

Sandia Prep – District 5-4A

Key Results

Eldorado’s win over La Cueva keeps the potential, though very unlikely, playoff game alive between the two. La Cueva can seal the deal with a win on Saturday.

Carlsbad and Hobbs both got the win and again sets up a major clash between the two teams. Hobbs wins, it’ll force a playoff game for first place. If Carlsbad wins, Cbad wins district outright, and Hobbs will remain in second place. The game though will be played in the legendary Tasker Arena where anything can happen.

Las Cruces found themselves down double-digits after a hot Lady Knight first quarter. But the Lady Bulldawgs found a way to get the win. A win against the season closer against Mayfield seals Las Cruces third place position while also knocking Mayfield back to fifth if Centennial defeats Onate.

Kirtland Central gets the win at Bloomfield which puts the Lady Broncos in first place and could result in a playoff for first if both teams win from here on out. The odds are in KC’s favor though as Bloomfield will have to head to Gallup tonight for a makeup game. This is the same Gallup team that handed the Lady Bobcats their first loss this past Saturday.

Other Notable Results
  • Goddard gets revenge on Lovington with a big win. The Lady Rockets move ahead of Lovington to second place.

  • Socorro defeated Hatch Valley to clinch second place in district. Hatch Valley, a favorite heading into district play, can’t be seeded better than Socorro.

  • Hope Christian denies Portales chance to move back to second place. Now Portales will have to hope for a Ruidoso upset over Moriarty.

Top Performances from Tuesday

Cara Liggins (Sandia) with 35 points versus Clovis

Harria Mendoza (Eunice) with 31 points and 12 rebounds versus Loving

Myra McCaskill (Aztec) with 24 points versus Gallup

Bri Rodriguez (Loving) with 21 points, 11 rebounds, 2 steals, and 4 assists versus Eunice

Sydney Candelaria (Eldorado) with 18 points versus La Cueva

Jada Jones (Eunice) with 17 points, 14 rebounds, 9 assists, and 4 steals versus Loving

Valeria Valtierra (Las Cruces) with 16 points versus Onate

Wednesday Night Hoops

Bloomfield at Gallup

Gallup wins and Kirtland Central has a chance to clinch versus Gallup on Friday. Bloomfield must win versus Gallup to keep their first place playoff hopes alive.

Espanola Valley at Los Alamos

Los Alamos stunned Academy a few weeks back. While it is unlikely that EV will allow for an upset to occur, you just never know this time of year. If Espanola can win, they can clinch with a win on Saturday versus Del Norte.

Pojoaque Valley at West Las Vegas

Both teams are vying for second place in district and this game will ultimately determine who will fall where. Both teams still have one game left after this, Pojo' against Robertson and West against St. Michael's. West needs to avenge their early 5 point loss against Pojo or remain in third place. Pojo needs the win to keep a hold of second place.

Taos at Robertson

Taos has struggled mightily through district play, but a win against Robertson to close out their run could be the momentum changer for the Lady Tigers. It would also help the likes of West and Pojoaque in their push to get that top spot.

Rio Grande is Open

PSA:
1. If you are a coach, do not hire Dennis Minidis. He didn't coach at Notre Dame nor was he the Patriots QB coach. He is a cancerous cell to any program that He touches.
2. If you are thinking about applying for this job, do not think admin will support you. Don't think that the baseball or basketball coach will willingly share athletes from the small pool of eligible kids. Do expect kids to hide and/or need to make up an assignment when it's weight lifting time. Do expect kids to cry to the principal when they don't letter even though they didn't finish the season. Do thank my husband for cleaning up the financial and equipment disaster that the program was in. Do expect to have the things that you purchase out of your own pocket stolen because everyone has keys to everything. Do expect the community to ruin your practice field by playing soccer all hours of the night on it or by running their horses on it. Do expect anonymous letters from Randy Gutierrez reminding you about how great he was. Do not expect parents to take care of fundraising. Do expect them to bring everyone in the extended family when there's free cake at a banquet and then complain about the size of the piece they got. Do not believe a word out of your AD's mouth. Do expect screaming parents to have the liberty to walk about the campus freely and unescorted until they find you and threaten you to your face. Don't expect anyone to care.

Just a little friendly advice for my friends.

Coach of the Week: Marty Zeller (Los Lunas)

After defeating second place St. Pius X at home this past weekend, it looks like Coach Zeller has his team ready for a run in March. Since their last loss to Bloomfield the Lady Tigers have gone off and won 13 of 14 games including wins against Bloomfield, Rio Rancho, and a district sweep of St. Pius X. With two games left in district play and a tight grip on first place, one might be weary of playing the Lady Tigers in the state tournament.
