I Thought I Would Never Live To See The Day:

It is just jaw dropping that the girls Carlsbad/Hobbs game in Carlsbad was SRO and a much bigger crowd than any boys game for either school. It is expected that tonight's game with Hobbs/Carlsbad at Tasker Arena is expected to be the same situation. Imagine that. Tonight's girls game could be the biggest crowd at Tasker Arena this year. My how the times have changed. Get there early. At Carlsbad there were 45 minute waits at the ticket lines. Hobbs will be better prepared than that. Hopefully.

Thursday Recap - Week 14

Notable Scores
Cibola def. Rio Rancho, 58-52
West Mesa def. Rio Grande, 81-41
Highland def. Valley, 54-33
Silver def. Cobre, 45-44
Tularosa def. Loving, 70-53
Laguna-Acoma def. NACA, 68-45
Dora def. Logan, 44-38
Melrose def. Elida, 47-41

Recap

1. Cibola's stunner over Rio Rancho widens the door and loosens the Lady Ram's grip on first place. Volcano Vista could be in the playoff for first. Granted if Piedra Vista doesn't play spoiler and get two wins this weekend. Still plenty of hoops left to be played to determine first in this district.

2. All eyes have been on the successful Lady Mustangs of West Mesa (and rightfully so!) but right behind them are the Highland Lady Hornets. Under second year head coach, Lonnie Neal, the Lady Hornets have set a number of new records and doubled their win total from last season. This may be the program's most successful season since the 1980s. Keep an eye on The Hive.

3. Laguna-Acoma claims their 6th straight district title with a win over NACA. Are the Lady Hawks dark horses in 3A hoops?

4. Dora found a way to battle back and force a 3-way tie for first place in their district by defeating Fort Sumner/House and Logan. Unfortunately, the Lady Coyotes were 4 points short of jumping into that first place playoff game (point differential). They remain in third place.

5. Melrose defeated Elida. Read that again. Elida lost. Sure, it was to a team who recently dropped down a class and were last year's 2A champion. Still impressive is that the Lady Buffaloes lost their last game to Elida by 15 but managed to close that gap at home with a 6 point win. Assuming Elida gets the win against San Jon, there will be a playoff game for first.

Stat of the Night

Now it's impressive to get a triple-double, but Tularosa's Cassie Vickery found her way to a quadruple-double in a district win over Loving. The WNMU commit posted 41 points, 10 rebounds, 11 steals, and 10 assists.

Matchups To Watch

Battle of the South: Chapter 2
Carlsbad at Hobbs

The last time these two teams met Carlsbad got the edge on Hobbs, but the Lady Eagles are looking to turn that story around tonight. Carlsbad will have their toughest test again as the regular season district title is on the line. A loss and Hobbs will force a one-game playoff for first in district. Regardless of wins and losses these two teams could possibly have the #1 and #2 seed locked up. (Unless of course West Mesa has something to say about that?)

Defending Home
Cleveland at Volcano Vista
The Lady Hawks are in charge of their own fate right now with Rio Rancho dropping one to Cibola. If the Lady Hawks can get the back-to-back wins they'll be in the playoff for first place in district against Rio Rancho. For VV though, these last two teams have been pesky to put away, but with both matchups being played at home, the Lady Hawks should feel confident closing out district. (Home record for VV? 4-2. Only losses to Las Cruces and Cibola)

A Golden Opportunity
Gallup at Kirtland Central

With Bloomfield losing three straight, Kirtland Central finds themselves atop the District 1-5A standings. A win against a tough Gallup team tonight at home seals the regular season district title for the Lady Broncos. This time of season though anything can happen. (Bloomfield needs a win vs. Farmington and a Gallup win to force a playoff for first place)

Chaos on the Horizon?
Roswell at Lovington

Roswell got on the road to Goddard and came up short. Now with the district regular season title in the balance, the Wildcats have a chance to introduce some chaos to 5A. Unfortunately for Lovington they won't be much of a beneficiary of that chaos as point differential shows them well behind that of Goddard and Roswell. Still, who doesn't like some early madness in February?
(Roswell hasn't lost to Lovington since the district tournament championship two years ago)

Playoff Positioning

Las Cruces at Mayfield
For LC, they must WIN OR Lose by 7 OR LESS to secure third place in district. For Mayfield, they must win by 8 OR MORE to secure third place in district. A loss by Mayfield and a Centennial win drops the Lady Trojans to fifth place.

Onate at Centennial
Onate can't better their position with a win, but Centennial has a lot to lose if they don't at least get the win. Although last week's loss to Las Cruces hurt, Centennial can still move up from fifth to fourth with a Las Cruces win over Mayfield. If there's a three-way tie, the Lady Hawks unfortunately come up on the short end due to point differential (-13).

Navajo Prep at Wingate
Navajo Prep has fallen off substantially since winning 9 of their first 12 games. The Lady Eagles have lost 6 of their last 9 games and if they want to improve their playoff position they'll need a 10+ point win against Wingate to push them ahead of the Lady Bears for second place.

Ruidoso at Moriarty
Now this game won't do much for Ruidoso but if there's anyone cheering loud for the Lady Warriors it's Portales. A Moriarty win would lead to a tie between Portales and Moriarty which the Lady Pintos own due to point differential. But a loss to Ruidoso would help the Lady Rams secure second place and a better playoff seed.

Bubble Teams

Aztec at Miyamura
The Lady Patriots are still in a position to move up despite losing their last five games. They can swap places with fifth place Aztec if they can get the win by 3 or more points. A Lady Patriots win could definitely shakeup the 5A double-digit seed projections and doom Aztec's playoff hopes.

Grants at Belen
Both teams have played up and down in district, but Belen still has a chance to swap places with Grants for third place. That kind of move could also cause chaos in the 5A projections but it'll take a 10+ point win by the Lady Eagles to make it a reality.

SCORES
Albuquerque High 64, Highland 59
Carrizozo 63, Animas 49
La Cueva 61, Eldorado 59
Shiprock Northwest 58, Tse Yi Gai 57
Valley 59, West Mesa 46

WHAT IT MEANS
1. La Cueva could be runner up or maybe there could be a three-way tie for first. La Cueva beat Eldorado last night and with that loss Eldorado is 8-1, La Cueva 7-2 in district play. Santa Fe is also sitting at 7-2. Santa Fe and Eldorado play on Saturday and could force the three-way, also La Cueva needs to beat Clovis in a trap game.

2. District 4-6A puts West Mesa in a scary bubble game. With West Mesa's loss to Valley they move into 4th place in arguably the 4th of 4 in terms of ranking district strength. What it means? Well, it means that Sandia could be back in play for the 16th spot.
