District Previews: 6A

Today, we continue to release our district previews for the 2016/2017 basketball season in New Mexico.

District 1-6A

In football this has been considered one of the toughest Districts in the classification. For one, like in football, they return the 2016 State Champion. Next, they return the player of the year in the New Mexico NMPreps.com Mr. Basketball award winner in Clay Patterson (Rio Rancho High School). Last, they return four players on our Top 10 players entering the season. Overall top-down this will be the toughest district in the state to win and could see all five teams dancing in March of the 16 that make the state tournament from 6A.

District 2-6A

The district with more mysteries than Fred, Daphne and Shaggy could answer (Scooby-Doo reference). More questions than answers. However, we will try to list as many things we do know going into the season. For one, they have one team ranked in the preseason Top-10 for 6A basketball in the tenth ranked Eldorado Eagles (Albuquerque, NM). However, that slot atop this district could go to a handful of teams that will play in District 2-6A this season. Newcomers Clovis and Santa Fe will be much improved, La Cueva is the next best suitor with a roster that returns some talent and we end with Manzano and Sandia two veteran programs in this district who look to improve drastically this season.

District 3-6A

In 6A basketball this district is loaded with teams that are in make-or-break type of years. What do we mean by that is that we could see a pair in the Final Four or State title game. They have the opportunity to be really could, improved from a season ago or take a step back. Hobbs who has a transfer in Vincent Taylor is the favorite in the mixture of uncertainty of quality teams. They also return a healthy core of players that could peak in Clay Stranser and Deuce Goodrich. Carlsbad returns the best frontcourt in the district with Branden Boatwright (commit to Fort Lewis) and Chris Johnson. Las Cruces, Centennial and Mayfield return some of the best guards in the district with Markus Collins (LCHS) and Ismael Holguin (MHS) being frontrunners. Centennial moves into 6A and could be the team that surprises, as they did in football, with guard Tennessee Owens ready to make believers. Gadsden lost a lot and return Kevin Medrano to build off their 17-win season.

District 4-6A

A district that could represent well this season is one in Albuquerque that host some of the schools with the most history. At the top we have the Albuquerque Bulldogs and University of New Mexico commit Marlon Cunningham. 6-foot-7 Dakota Yancey and the Rio Grande Ravens return off a 18-win season that resulted in an Elite Eight showing. The number one team this preseason however is the Valley Vikings led by one of the best duos in Segun Oyeku and Anthony Chavez. Highland features 6-foot-5 Cael Apodaca in what could be a move back to the playoffs for the Hornets. The unknown teams floating at the bottom right now is the West Mesa Mustangs and Atrisco Heritage Academy Jaguars. Both lost a lot and will be a team circled with new talent.

Overview

It’s a new season and Class 6A is looking a tad different with realignment and reclassification. We have a rising team atop our preseason rankings in Carlsbad. It was quite the historical run the Cavegirls made last season and they’re returning a number of contributors such as standout guard Carsyn Boswell and Lauryn Wade. Their returning frontcourt features a tough duo in Kim Best and Teagan Rogers. Carlsbad is looking like a true contender but right behind them is one of the toughest defensive teams in the state.

At the second spot, a determined Cibola squad looks to avenge last year’s title game loss, but they’ll have to do so for a better part of the season without Corbyn Cunningham and top prospect Amaya Brown. Both players look to return to the team in the second half of the season, but the remaining Cibola squad won’t be too despondent. Graduating one senior, Cibola looks to return a wealth of standout players like Kavionnia Brown and Tiana Guillory.

At the #3 spot Eldorado is looking to make it further than their surprising early exit in last season’s state tournament. They’ll be led by senior guard Sydney Candelaria. Following the Lady Eagles are the defending state champions Volcano Vista. The Lady Hawks graduated three of their top four scorers but do return veteran guard, Melissa Mancha. Rounding out the Top-5 is Las Cruces. Despite losing the talented junior guard in Jayden Perez (transferred to Onate), the Lady Bulldawgs still have the scoring talents of Sarah Abney and Janessa Johnson.

Debuting in 6A and the Top-10 is Centennial. The Lady Hawks are returning a young core led by senior guard Brooklyn Calderazzo who averaged 13.0 points per game. Sandia graduates only three seniors but returns their top 4 scorers from last season. Hobbs also graduated three seniors but they’re biggest move came in gaining former Roswell head coach Joe Carpenter to lead the program. Despite graduating three of their top four scorers, Mayfield does bring back top scorer Jayce Gorzeman and remain in the Top-10. Finally, West Mesa returns a young squad and three of which started as freshman last year and led the Lady Mustangs to a runner-up finish in district.

What happened to the rest of the 100 to watch out for ? we got qbs and some feedback and that was it .

Nothing against the kids or the coaches. I am sure they are great kids and the coaches put in their time. They got blasted 47-0 tonight by Manzano and everyone saw it coming. Everyone knows they should not of made the playoffs. Rules need to be implemented to change this. The best 12 should make it period. Again, nothing against the hard working kids or coaches from Atrisco, I'm just against the current playoff system.

This is amazing! Who even wins 112 straight?

Week 12 Recap: Upset Time

The first round of the state playoffs took place across New Mexico. We take a look at a few of the games that took place.

6A - First Round

No. 5 Manzano 47, No. 12 Atrisco Heritage Academy 0: The Manzano Monarchs (9-2) ran away in the opener with shutout win, 47-0. Sophomore running back Xavier Ivey-Saud continued doing what he does best with a 120-yard rushing night and three touchdowns. The Monarchs will head into the quarterfinals taking on the 4-seed Centennial Hawks.

No. 6 Clovis 31, No. 11 Eldorado 28: The Clovis Wildcats (8-3) move into the quarterfinals to face No. 3 Las Cruces next week. The Wildcats scored the first two touchdowns of the game, going up 14-0 in the second quarter. However, Eldorado surged back to take a 21-17 second half lead but the Wildcats found the end zone late in the for the 31-28 win. Micah Gray led the way for the Wildcats with 240-yards rushing, 3 rushing touchdowns and one passing touchdown.

No. 10 Mayfield 48, No. 7 Volcano Vista 19: The Volcano Vista Hawks (7-4) opened the night with a Dillon Gassoway to David Cormier 71-yard touchdown but that would be the only lead for the Hawks. Mayfield (6-4) who appears to have a healthy roster, more than they have all season, pulled the upset scoring five unanswered touchdowns until the final quarter. Mayfield running back Isaac Vance scored a pair of touchdowns and added two touchdowns on the night. Mayfield quarterback Torry Locklin had a big night passing for over 200-yards and two touchdowns, a 71-yard pass to Gavin Swinson was a highlight of the night.

5A - First Round

No. 5 Los Lunas 60, No. 12 Kirtland Central 10: University of Michigan commit O'maury Samuels was unstoppable in the opening round of the playoffs. He carried the ball only six times for a total of 175-yards and two rushing touchdowns. His back up Jacob Luna added 100-yards and two touchdowns. The Los Lunas Tigers (8-3) will face county rival No. 4 Belen in the quarterfinals.

No. 8 Alamogordo 45, No. 9 Del Norte 14: The 8-seed Alamogordo Tigers (7-4) opened the game with a huge lead and never looked back as they ran away with a 45-14 win. Alamogordo quarterback Kyle Hooper had an impressive stat line of 289-passing yards, with 3-passing touchdowns. He also had 91-rushing yards for a touchdown. The 8-seed Tigers move into the quarterfinals were No. 1 Artesia awaits.

No. 10 Farmington 42, No. 7 Aztec 22: The Farmington Scorpions (5-5-1) opened the game with a 21-0 lead and it was all the Scorpions. Aztec (7-4) fought back bring the game to 28-22 but Farmington ended the night scoring 14-unanswered points. On the opening kick Donovan Gonzalez took it 95-yards for the score, added another quick touchdown from one yard out and before quarterback Kody Becenti hit Sol Rascon for a 28-yard touchdown. Farmington moves into the quarterfinals to take on 2-seed St. Pius X.

No. 11 Miyamura 26, No. 6 Goddard 24: In what could be one of the biggest upsets in state playoffs history (since they moved to 12 teams) the Miyamura Patriots from Gallup, New Mexico took out 6-seed Goddard 26-24 on the road. The Patriots (8-3) will move into the quarterfinals to face 3-seed Roswell as they travel back to Roswell in consecutive weeks.

What Did We Learn in Week 12

1. Mayfield Looks Dangerous as a 10-seed: The Trojans are good, most know they are dangerous in November and they proved it Friday night. They will take on 2-seed Cleveland next week in what could be the battle to watch. Throw out the seed or ranking this could be the game to watch. Isaac Vance has battled some injuries this season but is looking healthy as can be, the Kent State commit.

2. More Dangerous 5A Team - Los Lunas, Miyamura, Alamogordo or Farmington: It's hard to just pick one but I will say that we learned the quarterfinals will have some great games. Los Lunas is still our 5-12 seed that could reach the semi-finals but Farmington and Alamogordo looked just as impressive. Miyamura pulling the biggest upset is another to consider against Roswell.

I know we have had some high profile players coming out of the state! Bergman, Walls, McCall, Swihart, Rogers, and some others.

My question is how do you manage or handle these players? Do you use them to pitch even if they are not gonna pitch at the next level? I have not had a player of that caliber come through and curious what is different if anything at all?
