Small School Football in Week 10

Small School Football in Week 10

This week we take a look at the games around the state in 4A/3A/2A and 8-man along with 6-man football.

Ranked Teams in Week 10

No. 17 Moriarty (8-0) vs Portales (7-1): Last week the Pintos accomplished the task of being picked against by routing district opponent Hope Christian, 41-20. Portales (No. 30 NMPreps.com Fab 50) who sits outside the Top-25 have been a team on a mission since dropping a game to Dexter on September 23rd. They are on a 3-game win streak winning by a combined score of 158-33. Both teams are averaging around 41 points per game and the difference could be in the offense. Portales will need to stop the run for Moriarty, Moriarty will need to contain Junior Ramirez who can do both.

Prediction: Portales 35, Moriarty 34

No. 18 Robertson (8-0) vs West Las Vegas (6-2): One week ago this was shaping to be a must see game outside the city of Las Vegas. In Vegas this should still be a hot ticket but with West dropping one to Taos most assume a Robertson thrashing. Both are high scoring offenses (39 per) but Robertson will have the differene maker with a stout D, maybe one of the better (or best) in 4A. The guy we like as our x-factor is Connor Houdek on defense who averages around 12 tackles per game.

Prediction: Robertson 39, West Las Vegas 21

No. 21 Hatch Valley (7-1) vs Cobre (4-4): The Hatch Valley Bears are playing like a team on a mission and one has to like the Bears in this one having a 14-game home win streak. After a 1-4 start however he Cobre Indians (No. 41 NMPreps.com Fab 50) could be the biggest New Mexico test this season. The biggest questions heading into this contest is if the Cobre defense can stop a Hatch Valley offense with more weapons than any Bear hunter in New Mexico. Cade Hackey, mentioned in the running for wide receiver of the year is only one of those weapons who could be in store for a big game. The last time Hatch played against a pass heavy team with a WR stud was Aztec, a game they dropped 62-31.

Prediction: Hatch Valley 42, Cobre 28

No. 22 Estancia (7-1) vs Cuba (1-7): Estancia has allowed 7-points in their two district games, Cuba could be on an end of a 50-0 contest. The Bears not only have the difference makers, they have the x-factors and everything you associate with a win in this game. Expect NMPreps.com Mr. Football candidate Ezekiel Tapia to get in and out early in this contest, he has 1,881-yards on the season with 7 straight games with 100 yards or more.

Prediction: Estancia 50, Cuba 0

Rapid Fire for Week 10

Upset I wouldn't be shocked if it happend: Portales on Moriarty. Yes, I know we sang this tune last week (let me have it) but Portales is the toughest challenge the Pintos have met.

Upset I would be shocked if it happened: Socorro vs Silver. This one has playoff hopes for both teams, more for Socorro who strange enough needs this one at (6-2) on the season. Silver should be fine but can't afford a drop.

Best underrated game this week: Dexter vs Capitan. This game should have all the hype this week as both a true contenders for the title.

Should have all the hype and more: Escalante vs Fort Sumner. Adding to a weekend of contenders spreading their wings, this one puts two of the best teams in 2A against each other, both are 9-0.

Playoff Dreams? Taos vs Pojoaque Valley. Both bring a 4-4 record into the contest and still a chance to make the dance, Taos beating West Las Vegas last week was huge.

Under .500 but a game you want to see. Tucumcari vs Texico. Both are a combined 3-12 but if you take peak at the schedule you can understand that these teams should be playoffs teams and might win a game or two win they arrive to the dance.

Continuing to Flex: Gateway Christian vs Cloudcroft. We said to keep your upset radar on this contest last week (okay that was dumb). The Warriors should roll but a 5-3 Cloudcroft will hope to be the surprise in waiting.

Jocking for Position: Mesilla Valley vs Carrizozo. Both teams bring a 5-2 record to the table, both teams need a win to move up in the playoff seeding game.

Who Could Be Player of the Week: Darion Ontiveros, Portales. Has over 1,000 yards rushing, has the chance in one of the top games to watch this week. I know we mentioned Ramirez above as the X-factor but the duo could both be humming.

Player Who Has the Chance to Shine. Andru Sanchez, Cobre. The QB for the Indians has quietly playing among the best in the classification. He can play spoiler to a top Hatch Valley team.

Player Who Will Shut Up the Critics: Elijah Tapia. The running back for the Pintos has 876-yards on the season, this week he can run a win down our doubts.

Week 10: Rapid Fire Friday

Week 10: Rapid Fire Friday

Today, we look at the games happening around the state of New Mexico in Week 10.

Game of the Week: No. 3 Las Cruces (7-1) vs No. 5 Onate (6-2): The District title is on the line, this might be the biggest game in terms of importance in Las Cruces this season.

Upset Watch of the Week: Santa Teresa (2-6) vs No. 23 Alamogordo (4-4): Maybe a stretch here, most people like Mayfield-Hobbs in this section but I'm hyping the Dozal diesel (Santa Teresa running back Dominick Dozal has rushed for over 1,200-yards)

Coaching match up to Watch: Chris White, Goddard vs Rex Henderson, Artesia: Two first year head coaches for two of the best football programs in 5A football. With the district title on the line we have some hype.

X Factor of the Week: Matt Chavez, Miyamura. The Patriots have a chance to move an inch closer to a District championship, that could possibly get them a home game in the playoffs. Chavez, has passed for 1,605-yards and rushed for 675-rushing yards.

Under the Radar Game of the Week: Texico (2-5) vs Tucumcari (1-7). Two programs that might have the most deceiving record - maybe not - but they are threat in the playoffs.

Under Hyped Game: No. 14 Eldorado (4-4) vs No. 11 La Cueva (5-3). Two solid QB's in this game and two teams that still have playoff hopes alive, Eldorado could use this win more as a 4-5 record might start to hurt when they argue for a slot.

Close call Game: Dexter (8-1) vs Capitan (7-1). The small school game of the week happens here with Dexter and Capitan. This could be the finish we all wait for at 9:45pm on Friday night.

Shootout Game: No. 21 Hatch Valley (7-1) vs Cobre (4-4): Both could potentially put up points, Hatch has been known to pour them on. Cobre looks to be the upset story of the night.

Rivalry Game To Watch: Escalante (9-0) vs Fort Sumner (9-0): Yes, maybe not the history as other rivalry games. However, these two are a combined 18-0 along with both teams playing for the 2A State Championship last season, an Escalante win 28-20. A shootout, a close call game a game to watch.

NMPreps Fan Game To Watch: Hondo Valley at Lake Arthur (). Another rivalry game to watch could be the Hondo at Lake Arthur 6-man quarterfinal game tonight. These two teams have played each other in the playoffs 6 of the last 7 years I believe. Always a great game.

NMPreps.com Top-25 Preview for Week 10

NMPreps.com Top-25 Preview

No. 1 Rio Rancho (8-0) vs No. 24 Cibola (3-6), Sat., 1pm:
The Rams and Cougars square off on Saturday in an afternoon contest. The Rams return after a week off in week nine but the clear favorite as they bring in an offense scoring 45.9 points per game, allowing on 12 per game. Cibola who struggles on offense, scoring 12.7 points per game.

Prediction: Rio Rancho 50, Cibola 0

No. 3 Las Cruces (7-1) vs No. 5 Onate (6-2), Fri., 7pm: The District 3-6A title is up for grabs, the winner takes home the championship barring a week 11 loss. Las Cruces owns the recent history against the Knights of Onate winning 4 of the last 5 by a combined score of 223 to 89. This is the most evenly match game with both averaging in the 30's (Las Cruces 39, Onate 32) on O, and allowing around 20 points per game.

Prediction: Las Cruces 24, Onate 21

No. 4 Artesia (7-1) at No. 16 Goddard (5-3), Fri, 7pm: The Artesia Bulldogs travel to Roswell to take on the Goddard Rockets, an Artesia win will clinch the district title. Goddard who started the season 1-3 has since won the last four games in a row. This one should be defensive battle and that will be the x-factor, who gets the stops?

Prediction: Artesia 34, Goddard 28

No. 6 Manzano (6-2) vs Santa Fe (0-8), Fri, 7pm: Manzano is on a 4-game win streak and have moved all the way up to 6th in the rankings. Santa Fe hasn't found a win and could be over early as they been mercy ruled in two of the last three games. Manzano running back Jordan Byrd went for over 300-yards in the last outing, he could see that again this week.

Prediction: Manzano 50, Santa Fe 0

No. 8 Volcano Vista (6-2) vs Piedra Vista (5-3), Fri., 7pm: The Volcano Vista Hawks have used a balanced attack from running the ball and quarterback playing well. Piedra Vista, on a three game skid right now, will look to studs Avery Norton and Elijah Gomboa for a last chance to make the playoffs with an upset.

Prediction: Volcano Vista 36, Piedra Vista 18

No. 9 Mayfield (4-4) vs No. 25 Hobbs (2-6), Fri., 7pm: Two programs in need of a win to make an argument for a state tournament bid, Hobbs more than Mayfield. The Mayfield Trojans however are fighting to stay in the tournament and move up in the seed selection process. The difference surrounds Mayfield with possible injuries, Hobbs has played well but hasn't been able to close out an upset. One to watch in the contest is Cayson Clay an explosive wide receivers who made the list for top receivers.

Prediction: Mayfield 25, Hobbs 21

No. 10 Clovis (5-3) vs Sandia (3-5), Sat., 2pm: With a district runner up spot still in play, maybe a district title the Clovis Wildcats need the game as a statement before a week 11 showing against La Cueva. Sandia enters the game on a two game skid, having troubles on offense scoring 7 points in two games. Seth Lopez played well last week and with more touches this Wildcats team could create a killer attack with two running backs. Sandia should focus on stopping the run but need to find a way to get on the board.

Prediction: Clovis 28, Sandia 6

No.11 La Cueva (5-3) vs No. 14 Eldorado (4-4), Fri., 7pm: The Bears and Eagles are trying to gain position for a bid to the state tournament. La Cueva winners of 4 of their last 5 games has moved into position for a good seed in the state tournament. Eldorado has dropped two of the last three games and trending the opposite direction with plenty of bubble teams on the cusp of missing the playoffs.

Prediction: La Cueva 21, Eldorado 20

No. 12 St. Pius X (8-1) at No. 15 Belen (7-1), Thurs, 7pm: Belen has pulled off three straights wins since falling to Roswell 26-7. Right now they are 1-1 against Top-25 teams and get another chance to prove their status on Thursday night. The difference in the contest will be can the Eagles stop the Sartans O, the Eagles have given up 24 points a game in the two Top-25 games. Against the rest of the field they have given up 6.6 points per game. St. Pius X has one of the most elusive players in the state in Drew Ortiz.

Prediction: St. Pius X 35, Belen 20

No. 13 Roswell (6-2) vs Lovington (1-7), Fri., 7pm: The Roswell Coyotes enter the game as 45 point as the Coyotes can put up points against non-top 25 teams this season. Plus the Coyotes minus two of their six games have gone for over 40 points. Also, the Lovington Wildcats have given up 358 points on the season. The name to know has been Gabriel Najar who has been on a move lately, rushing for over 100-yards in the last four games - 200 last week against Artesia.

Prediction: Roswell 45, Lovington 0

No. 19 Los Lunas (5-3) at Grants (5-3), Friday, 7pm: The Los Lunas Tigers are on a three game skid and need to make a statement this week as they have fallen off their tracks. Running back O'maury Samuels has been out along with quarterback Nick Gaerlan, with plenty more questions surrounding the Tigers lately. Grants on the other hand have won their last 5 of 6 games and could be looking for an upset win at home.

Prediction: Los Lunas 35, Grants 10

No. 20 Carlsbad (2-6) vs Gadsden (1-8), Friday, 7pm: Each win matters, for Carlsbad they need each win to continue their rebuilding under Coach Gary Bradley. Gadsden will love to play spoiler and have the opportunity in this contest to go out with a bang on the season in their finale. Carlsbad has Jaykan Willis at running back who can get in the stat line and top players list for Week 10 in this contest and is our X-factor.

Prediction: Carlsbad 24, Gadsden 10

No. 23 Alamogordo (4-4) vs Santa Teresa (2-6), Fri, 7pm: The Alamogordo Tigers started the season 3-1 but have dropped 3 of the last 4 games. They lost stud wide receiver Alex Ramirez for the season but have a top, next level quarterback in Kyle Hooper along with x-factor Dee Smith in this contest. Santa Teresa, if any team is going to this week, is one team that could sneak up and pull the huge upset. They have a junior running back in Dominick Dozal, only a junior who has 1,245-rushing yards.

Prediction: Alamogordo 28, Santa Teresa 27

Coach Haack

legendary basketball coach Bob Haack of Santa Teresa passed away today. He won the state title in 2012 and was a hall of fame coach from his years in El Paso. I talked to him a couple of weeks ago and he wasn't well at all. He was struggling with cancer but was still hoping to recover, still the same guy.

Coach is in the El Paso sports Hall of Fame and was an assistant under Don Haskins in the 70's at UTEP. He lived a private life but one thing that never wavered was his love of coaching basketball.

The 2016/2017 New Mexico High School basketball season is here and today we release our first look at the NMPreps.com pre-season rankings. The rankings could change closer to the first week of games but right now this is what we know heading into the season

More: Preseason Home | 4A Rankings | 3A Rankings | 2A Rankings | 1A Rankings

Overview

Since taking over in 2012/2013 head coach Travis Julian has not only placed the Los Lunas Tigers on the 5A map, he has them as the contender in waiting each season. The Tigers went 21-10 last season and return one of the teams with the most depth. They return four players ranked in the NMPreps.com Top 100 Players from 2015/2016 in Martin Trujillo, Kayden Walker and Hunter Wisneski along with a sophomore who could be one of the best in Zanen Zeller.

Coming in at number two is the Roswell Coyotes who lost next level talent Daniel Amador (New Mexico Junior College) but return Chris Mesquita and Garrett Smothermon who helped contribute to a 23-6 season in 2015/2016. At number three is the Artesia Bulldogs who are quick to rise in the rankings with the addition of a next level talent in Bryce McAllister who moved from Carlsbad.

Rounding out the top-5 is the 2016 runner up in Capital High School who will hand over the steering wheel to Jeremy Anaya, a point guard that could keep them at the top even with the graduation to Eric Coca (Northern New Mexico College). Grants has plenty of holes to fill but have one of the top guards in Matt Vail that could keep them in the mix, they also lost a college player in Richie Lucero (Fort Lewis College).

Number six comes down from 6A in the Alamogordo Tigers who made a splash of a hire in bringing former Cliff coach Brian Shock to town. The Cliff Cowboys won the past two state championships in 1A basketball and bring a talented roster that underachieved last season. Defending state champ Espanola Valley checks in at 8 with coaching questions, Goddard has only been getting better they check in at 7.

Post Season Awards Watch: Wide Receivers

Post Season Awards Watch: Wide Receivers

At the conclusion of the 2016 season we will hand out our post season awards to the best players at each position. Today, we look at the receivers who make our short list before the season comes to an end.

1. Junior Pena - SR - Centennial High School: You've heard the name all season long and Pena has backed it with 928-yards, 9 touchdowns and has helped the Hawks to a 7-2 record. Pena has been one of the best this season and could be the name that takes home the award, right now the leader until the members take the official vote.

2. Cade Hackey - SR - Hatch Valley High School: One of the best wide receivers at the 2016 NMPreps.com Football combine, Hackey has lived up to the hype and more. 663-yards, 9 touchdowns and the Bears in position to defend their state championship. They are ranked in the Top-25 of all New Mexico teams at 7-1.

3. Cason Clay - SR - Hobbs High School: With 848-yards it's hard to not enjoy the season Clay is having this year. Clay also has 7-touchdowns on the season (pending one more game) and looking like a sure next level talent for the Eagles. Clay is the type of receiver who you can throw in his direction and he does the rest of the work. Plenty of yards are after the catch.

4. Brandon Baeza - JR - Las Cruces High School: Baeza plays for the team that people love this season and will BUY next season as favorites to win it all with one of the top duos. Baeza a next level speed and talent has 625-yards on the season and 8 touchdowns.

5. Justin Black - JR - Aztec High School: The Tigers have been one of the biggest risers in the Fab 50 rankings and playing well as of late. They currently have an edge as DC of 1-5A. Black has 845-yards, 8 touchdowns on the season.

6. Santiago Williams - SR - Albuquerque High School: The Bulldogs at 4-4 are staying alive with a win last week over West Mesa. Williams currently leads the state with 982-yards and 16-touchdowns and could sneak higher on the list or win the award win members take their vote with that stat line.

7. David Cormier - SR - Volcano Vista High School: The Hawks are playing well this season at 6-2 and ranked in the Top-10. Cormier has 8 touchdowns and 553-yards on the season.

8. Andrew Erickson - JR - Manzano High School: The Monarchs, another team that has come out of nowhere to place among the best in the state. They are currently ranked in the Top-10 and in first place of District 2-5A. Erickson has 374-yards and 4 touchdowns.

Week 10 Staff Picks

Las Cruces vs Onate +2,500 either way
Grine's Pick: Onate
Why: I am taking the risk with this pick and buying into the Onate Knights this week to make that fina statement and sneak into the Top-10. Las Cruces is solid, we all know the weapons, but something tells me this veteran Knights unit gets it done.

La Cueva vs Eldorado +2,000 either way
Grine's Picks: La Cueva
Why: The Bears haven't been dominant this season, Eldorado hasn't lived up to the hype. The rivalry will always be there. I guess I am going with the Bears who have played a tad better this season.

Moriarty vs Portales +1,500 either way
Grine's Pick: Portales
Why: Moriarty has to love this now that I picked against them - I did last week and they won. Portales brings an attack on offense that Moriarty could struggle against - they have a good QB and RB along with a defense that is better than any they have seen this season.

Dexter vs Capitan +1,500 either way
Grine's Pick: Capitan
Why: Well, this one is another tough game to pick - most are this week with the playoffs for Pick 'Em starting. Capitan is playing well, so has Dexter but Capitan has a solid D that could create issues for Dexter.

Escalante vs Fort Sumner +1,500 either way
Grine's Pick: Fort Sumner
Why: This is a battle like others on this list that you have to enjoy. It will be a grind and one of the instant classics. They are sure to meet again in the playoffs. Round one on our hands.

St. Pius X vs Belen +1,000 (Belen is upset +2,000)
Grine's Pick: St. Pius X
Why: We have a 15-point line in our prediction and I am taking the pick with the Sartans. Belen struggled with Roswell and this offense of St. Pius could be better than that of the Coyotes.

Artesia vs Goddard +800 (Goddard is upset +1750)
Grine's Pick: Artesia
Why: Who would pick against Artesia this season. Hard to not like everything about them. Goddard, if someone could get them from 5A might be that team. RB is playing really well.

Clovis vs Sandia +800 (Sandia is upset +2,000)
Grine's Pick: Clovis
Why: Clovis is too good to get upset in this game. Sandia is struggling this season.

Hatch vs Cobre +800 (Cobre is upset +2,000)
Grine's Pick: Hatch Valley
Why: The Bears and Indians is a headline game in 4A football. However, the Top-25 ranked Bears are a pair of touchdowns better.

Miyamura vs Farmington +600 (Farmington is upset +900)
Grine's Pick: Farmington
Why: I think the Scorpions were shocked last week against Aztec and don't see it happening again.

Valley vs West Mesa +500 either way
Grine's Pick: Valley
Why: I go opposite of the pick above with a team favored to win their district falling. I just think Valley is playing a little better lately and the 'Stangs haven't played well.

Bloomfield vs Kirtland Central +500 either way
Grine's Pick: Kirtland Central
Why: A true toss up. I flipped a coin

GRINE'S RECORD

Last Week: 8-2
Overall Record: 70-31

An Open Letter To The "Concerned South Valley Resident"

If you are, or know this individual, please feel free to pass along these words.

First of all, thank you for your feedback. I am happy to know that my husband is getting free rent inside your head. Unfortunately for you, he laughed off your letter because anonymous letters are the work of chickensh!ts and really don't carry any value in his world. Sign your name if you want to be taken seriously. Better yet, if you are truly concerned about the team, perhaps a more productive use of your time would be to offer to help out in some capacity instead of writing anonymous letters.

Please allow me to address some of your points:

1 – I know there is some agenda because you feel that my husband assisted in the firing of Randy Gutierrez. You have mentioned it several times. I assure you that there is no truth in that. The only part that my husband played was mopping up the financial disaster that the program was in at the time. Fortunately he has a degree in math so he's pretty good with numbers. Moreover, aside from the financial issues, my husband took Randy aside to advise and caution him about the other issues on which Randy had been previously counseled by the administration. He did all he could to help Randy when he saw the warning signs. Randy chose to ignore the warnings and corrective action and as such, consequences were doled out as the administration saw fit at the time.

2 – Reality check: Randy Gutierrez did not build an "incredible program" at RGHS. He had a few good years, to his credit, but the last four years at RGHS, the Ravens went 1-9, 4-6, 2-7 and 2-8 (those last two wins were my husband's as he was interim coach). Randy's best years were with the group with Adrian Baca, Jeff Acosta, etc. I think I could have won with those guys. They were great. My husband actually gives Randy a lot of credit when he speaks of him. Much more than he deserves in my opinion.

3 – My husband is not a Valley guy. Our kids went to and currently go to Valley because of where we live and where I'm from but I guarantee you he is a RGHS guy through and through. Proud Class of 1992. Active member and participant in the alumni association. Wears red and black almost every single day. Car and motorcycle icense plates all dedicated to his status as a Raven. Custom jackets, sweaters, the list goes on and on. I would challenge anyone to show me how they support and cherish their status as a Raven alum more than my husband. Or as an alumnus of any high school for that matter. I support Valley and he supports our kids and the VHS coaches as colleagues and friends but I can tell you that it is a house divided when VHS and RGHS play. What my husband doesn't do is hand out grades that students don't deserve. I know that has caused issues when eligibility is in jeopardy but he holds his students to a high standard and makes them accountable for their actions and lack of action. That has caused other coaches to accuse him of not backing up the Valle del Sur but in the end he is a teacher and has to sleep at night.

I hope that we can get back to supporting the Rio Grande football team. They are young and making progress. It is with hope that this program can be resurrected at some point in the next few years. The coach is passionate about football and passionate about Rio Grande. Please feel free to look me up at the next game. I would be happy to continue this discussion in person.

Warmest Regards,
Nanci Mascareñas
