St. Pius X Quarterback Drew Ortiz picked up his first offer this week from St. Pius X

Big week of New Mexico High School Football Recruiting, currently exactly 20 in-state prospects hold either a D1 or D2 offer, very impressive being it's only June 17th.

Early in the week St. Pius X Quarterback Drew Ortiz was offered by the New Mexico Highlands Cowboys after attending the Cowboy's one-day camp at St. Pius X High School. As a junior Ortiz threw for 47 touchdowns, 2,200 passing yards, and had 1,100 rushing yards.

New Mexico Highlands also offered 6-foot-4, 210 pound Los Lunas Linebacker Trevor Brohard. Brohad is now up to two offered being offered by Western Colorado a few weeks back.

The third prospect that New Mexico Highlands offered this week was 6-foot-2, 230 pound Sandia Linebacker Ben Betram. Bertram really stands out among the rest and was also recently offered by Adams State.

Rio Rancho Running Back Josh Foley who recently camped at Boise State and Wyoming, showing well at each camp was offered by Eastern New Mexico this week. Foley who checked in at 5-foot-10, 195 pounds during his visit to Colorado now holds offers from Eastern, Western New Mexico, and New Mexico Highlands.

Eastern New Mexico offered three prospects from Cleveland High School on Friday, June 17th. The Greyhounds extended offers to 6-foot-4, 240 pound Tight End Adam Cook, 6-foot-5, 255 pound offensive tackle Hayden Wilson, and 6-foot-5, 285 pound Daimon Altamirano.

Mayfield Running Back Lands Offer No. 2

Kent State has offered Mayfield Running Back Isaac Vance. Vance also holds an offer from the New Mexico State Aggies. As you can see from the film below, he's simply just on another level and his field vision is among the best I've seen. Is also a very superb receiver, just label him a play-maker.

"It's a huge blessing. I am originally from that area and having the possible opportunity to head back home is very exciting. I have been in contact with multiple coaches on the staff, but Coach Needham (Defensive coordinator) is the one who officially offered me the scholarship," said Vance on the offer Friday night.

The 5-foot-8, 160 pound back who is also hearing from CAL and Texas Tech ran for 2,067 yards and 32 touchdowns as a junior breaking 7 school records in just 11 games.

The Trojans who have not a state title in 5 seasons are beyond hungry according to the early NMPreps.com Mr. Football Candidate.

"It's crazy right now. The energy and passion we have had so far has been the best I've been apart of in my going on 4 years at Mayfield. Our number 1 goal as a team is to genuinely love and care for each other, and with that, of course bring home the blue trophy and end the 5 year "drought".

Manzano Defensive Back Ryan Moore Lands Offer

Manzano Defensive Back Ryan Moore has been offered by Eastern New Mexico. He is also being recruited by Colorado State. "Ryan has been working very hard to become a top defensive back. He has been going to additional workouts outside of practice just to get better. He is a physical corner with good speed. Totally well deserved," Said Manzano Head Football Coach Chad Adcox.

New Mexico High School Football Preview: La Cueva Bears

2016 Outlook: La Cueva is a program with plenty of potential heading into the 2016 football season. The Bears program was once known as the best in the Albuquerque area and they look to challenge again this season with a strong roster of players. La Cueva went 3-7 last season without a playoff birth but were within a touchdown, showing a strong defensive presence in a offensive game. Flying under the radar is Chris Campbell a senior quarterback poised for a breakout season and could have his numbers jump with a pass heavy offense. The Bears also return a Top 60 player for 6A football in two-way player Josh Woisin (LB/RB). Another player to keep a close eye on is running back is Thomas Bui (Sr). Derek Loidolt a Linebacker is a junior to watch as he was ranked in the Top 10 returning juniors in 6A football. The Bears will have their hands full with a new, stronger district with the addition of Clovis and teams that are looking to be in the better half with Sandia and Manzano along with the state runner up Eldorado Eagles. La Cueva opens the season on August 24th against the Cibola Cougars.

Las Cruces High Team Camp

Great teams participated in the Las Cruces High Team camp this summer. You had all the local schools plus Albuquerque High, El Dorado, Carlsbad and Roswell along with Los Lunas. Eldorado is going to be a very good team this season. They have some great shooter along with a very good big man. Albuquerque High with Cunningham will be hard to stop in 6A. Los Lunas and Roswell will be right there in class 5A when it's all said and done. It was nice seeing so many talented teams come south and play some summer hoops.

Ranking The Best Week One Games
Joshua J Grine

August is right around the corner and we head to turning to our computers or getting the tailgate food ready and catch all of the action. As you know its never too early to look at the games and we give our ranking of the week one games for the week of August 24th - 27th.

Top 5 Games In 6A

1. Rio Rancho at Mayfield

Both of these teams will be favorites ranked somewhere in the top-5 when the season officially kicks off. Rio Rancho the 2014 State Champ and Mayfield in the 5-year title drought (yeah not a drought) but could be a possible State Title game match-up.

2. Las Cruces vs Eldorado

Much like the game above this game could feature a true state champion contender, shoot it does have the contender but I could see one win it all. Both are ranked high this preseason and will feature some of the top prospects in the state.

3. Carlsbad vs Artesia

Maybe, a bit high and you have another game above this one but what is not to like with a rivalry. Artesia is the two-time defending 5A champ and Carlsbad a team on the rise. No matter what the records this game is big in the area for both town bragging rights.

4. Onate vs Cleveland

Maybe not the highlight headline as the top two on the ranking but this game will show us how good the defending state champs are. Onate was one of the most improved teams last season but we will have to wait and see. I like this match up with the Storm athletes, especially the QB and solid line, against the stellar Linebacker core from Onate.

5. La Cueva vs Cibola

This one falls in line with other "pretender/contender" games like Highland vs St. Pius X, Manzano vs Atrisco Heritage and West Mesa vs Del Norte. Highland looking to improve from their 2-win season with some athletes. Pius is a possible 5A title contender, Manzano and Atrisco both bubble teams with a loss being a deal breaker even in week one. West Mesa and Del Norte in the same boat. I like La Cueva vs Cibola however as the match up looks to be a scoring affair. La Cueva has a solid QB and athletes that are under the radar as they switch to the spread. Cibola has Kayzan Martin to run. Expect the score to be high.

6A - Week One Schedule
8/24 - La Cueva vs Cibola
8/25 - Manzano vs Atrisco Heritage Academy
8/26 - Albuquerque vs Centennial
8/26 - Carlsbad vs Artesia
8/26 - Las Cruces at Eldorado
8/26 - Deming vs Gadsden
8/26 - Mayfield vs Rio Rancho
8/26 - Farmington vs Piedra Vista
8/26 - Rio Grande vs Sandia
8/26 - West Mesa vs Del Norte
8/26 - St Mikes vs Santa Fe
8/27 - Onate vs Cleveland
8/27 - Highland vs St. Pius X
8/27 - Valley vs Volcano Vista

Ranking 5A Week One Games

1. Capital vs Goddard: The Jaguars and Rockets played last season in the state tournament, the Jaguars get another chance to prove the rags to riches stories in high school football.

2. Alamogordo vs Valencia: Alamogordo the big dogs (or cats) that move down to 5A. Valencia gets the chance to play spoiler or we get to see Alamogordo as the true title contender. The headline is the Tigers hit the hair while the Jaguars ground and pound. Cat Fight!

3. Aztec vs Los Lunas: Maybe, more the headline of this cat fight is that we get to see another potential title contender in Los Lunas taking on the Aztec Tigers who are eager to return to the top tier in 5A football.

4. Roswell vs Ruidoso: Maybe, more of a favorite to Roswell but I add it because we get to see how could the Coyotes will be. Ruidoso a year removed from their title is a quality opponent and could create an early scare to make some believers.

5. Belen vs Bloomfield: This is more of a excitement to see a new era and what the former Mayfield OC will do with his own program. The Eagles have some returning players that could get them back on the rise. Bloomfield moving up to 5A from 4A is no slouch though and well coached as it comes.

Note: I didn't add any games mentioned above in the 6A/5A challenge games. If it was mentioned above we left it off.

5A - Week One Schedule
8/26 - Alamogordo at Valencia
8/26 - Aztec vs Los Lunas
8/26 - Belen vs Bloomfield
8/26 - Capital vs Goddard
8/26 - Carlsbad vs Artesia
8/26 - Chaparral vs EP Mountain View (TX)
8/26 - Del Norte vs West Mesa (Community Stadium)
8/26 - Deming vs Gadsden
8/26 - Farmington vs Piedra Vista
8/26 - Grants vs Miyamura
8/26 - Kirtland Central vs Navajo Prep
8/26 - Los Alamos vs Pojoaque Valley
8/26 - Lovington at Denver City (Texas)
8/26 - Roswell vs Ruidoso
8/26 - St. Pius X at Highland (Community Stadium)
8/26 - Santa Teresa at Clint (Texas)
8/27 - Albuquerque Academy vs Hope Christian

Why are "D1 offers" important?

This board seems to place a lot of focus on "D1 offers." I don't think that distinction is all that important. It treats all Division 1 schools equally. But NMSU ain't Stanford, and an offer from one isn't equivalent to an offer from others. An offer from ND State or Sam Houston State is tougher to come by, and those are FCS schools.

Also, the term "offer" doesn't always mean the same thing. Is that a full scholarship offer, an offer to play (but you'll have to use the lottery scholarship), "preferred walk-on" status, or something else?

Cleveland Offensive Lineman Lands Offer No. 2

Cleveland Offensive Lineman Daimon Altamirano Lands Offer No. 2 today from Western Colorado. Eastern New Mexico has also offered the 6-foot-5, 285 pound offensive tackle. New Mexico, New Mexico State, and Bowling Green have also been in contact as of late.

"Daimon is a returning starter on the offensive line for us. Daimon is a natural talent and had the potential to be very special. He is really starting to turn some heads and get noticed on his college camp circuit this summer. Daimon is going to be a tremendous asset for any program that gives him the opportunity," Commented Cleveland Head Football Coach Heath Ridenour.
