Today, we take a look around the state and continue looking at the brackets and different views.

The members of the NMAA selection committee don't have an easy job this season. They will be wrong along with being right. Let's hope they are more right than wrong. I argued about district strength (I hope they discuss this), will they defend their brackets? When you see the NCAA they let us know why they picked a certain way. Would be cool if they do but if not we try to shed some light.

6A Fringe - 3 Spots, 5 Teams

14. La Cueva (10-13, 5-2): The Bears have the advantage as a District Runner-Up. In most cases I am arguing that yes both the DC and Runner-Up should get the nod. However, this might be the year that you could argue they shouldn't. I won't and here is why of these 'Fringe Teams'' they deserve to be IN. They have the win over Valley, yes I would argue the time of a win, but I won't. They also have wins over Volcano Vista (IN), Mayfield and Highland. If they beat Sandia tonight they might argue for a better seed outside 13-16.

15. Santa Fe (9-15, 2-5): The Demons play in the toughest district in the state, they have better wins and bubble win over Las Cruces. I think they have done enough to deserve a slot at this point in the season. Like mentioned I think their 'rank' based on numbers would be higher if they got to play in District 3-6A or 2-6A.

16. Las Cruces (14-12, 4-4): One of the better records in the bunch. They also have some solid wins but also some questionable losses in regards to this bunch listed. The reason that I have them as the 16th team IN is Santa Fe's resume a bit better. Las Cruces in over Highland because of the district argument. Might be a situation when you use the District Tournament as an argument.

Highland (8-15, 3-5): Might be in a situation when you need to win the district tournament. Or a win against Volcano Vista tonight would give you argument to the likes of Santa Fe, maybe pushing Las Cruces OUT. The Rio Grande win helps and might be the sleeper on a two game win streak.

Mayfield (14-12, 3-4): Beat Onate and we will talk. I have given praise all season long. Like the direction but more of a beat Onate tonight.

5A - The Fight For Number 3. The Co-DC's and Farmington

3. Espanola Valley (18-7, 5-2): If they win tonight they are Co-DC with Capital. Have a DC win over Sandia from 6A and another against Roberston. Capital only has Los Lunas. They will also have Silver win as a DC in their conversation. They must beat Bernalillo tonight and why not place them here.

4. Farmington (21-4, 7-0): Might be a surprise to most and not a favorite pick at 3 but they are an outright champion. Their district strength is weaker but Gallup as your DRU is not bad league.

5. Centennial (19-5, 7-1): Another Co-DC that could say we are the 3 and they would be right. They actually might have the better resume of the bunch because of the Roswell win. Say what you want that win if the best win of the teams list here. Co-DC is the only argument, not a good one but for feature sake, is why they are behind Farmington.

6. Capital (22-4, 6-2): Not outright DC right now, Bernalillo loss hurts but still likely 3 over 4. Somewhat similar with Farmington minus the win over Los Lunas.

7. Los Lunas (16-9, 7-1): Centennial the Co-DC is above the Co-DC from 2-6A so gave the strength to them. Most will likely throw criteria at me (do it) but I say they deserve it a bit more at 7.

4A - The Side Without Hope Christian and Confusing Resumes

2. West Las Vegas (19-5, 4-1), 3. Pojoaque Valley (19-6, 3-2), 4. Robertson (21-4, 3-2): This District should be rewarded with the 2-4 slot. Argue what you want I don't see how they are not here.

5. Portales (15-9, 5-0): Might be able to argue into the 2-4 slot but no higher than 4 so no true difference at 5. The case into 3rd would be. DC wins over Tucumcari, Silver and being a DC themselves. The bad thing about the end is they play in the worst District.

6. Silver (17-7, 8-0): Good team, maybe a tad over hyped by me this preseason but don't be surprised if I take them as a final four team still. I like the team as a sleeper.

6. Bloomfield (18-6, 9-0): They are a DC, ranked high in 4A but nothing else on their resume truly says higher than 6. Might be 7 to be honest.

Grine Picks From The Seeds Above

Final Four

6A - Onate, Cibola, Sandia and Carlsbad:

Surprised? Yup. Sandia the sleeper. No Valley, Cleveland or Albuquerque High? Yup. Valley playing well lately but maybe upset. Cleveland shaky last March against Sandia - Carlsbad might be the sequel. If they beat Hobbs tonight that is if not they will have a higher seed.
How the bracket looks FYI: 1. Onate, 2. Cibola, 3. Valley 4. Cleveland 5. Carlsbad 6. Hobbs 7. Albuquerque 8. Rio Grande 9 Rio Rancho 10 Gadsden 11 Sandia 12 Atrisco 13 Volcano. 14 La Cueva 15 Santa Fe 16 Las Cruces

5A - Roswell, Centennial, Capital and Grants:

Capital might be listed as a 6 seed above but might play into their favor - Que No? Well, fun to see the bracket like that. Roswell, Grants should be their in March. Centennial has a coach with the jewelry, and Capital does too.

4A - Hope, Robertson, West Las Vegas, Silver

Robertson is the best team to beat Hope. Silver sneaky 6 seed. West Las Vegas has Bustos.

Grine: Streaking Into the Post Season

Joshua J Grine of NMPreps.com

Heading into the post season the team at NMPreps.com will bring you non-stop coverage and features into March.

Today, we take a look at the teams who haven't lost in over 10-games. Some teams have yet to lose in the 2016 along with every class being represented minus 3A (Lordsburg close at 9).

Onate of 6A basketball does play in a weak district but within this streak that leads back to December 30th, a loss to Del Valle (Texas), has a pair of Top-10 6A wins in Albuquerque (Jan. 15th) and Carlsbad (January 9th). The Knights will likely see their streak improve to 15 with a District Tournament Championship and into March.

Looking into 5A we have a pair of programs that are on a win-streak with the Grants Pirates winning 11 in a row and the Centennial Hawks at 10. The Pirates have wins against Capital and Espanola Valley during their current streak. The Centennial Hawks play in one of the better 5A Districts and a big win over Los Lunas has them as Co-District Champions.

If I did a ranking (you know we love ranking everything) I might go with the 2A Melrose Buffaloes and a 10-game win streak with wins over Santa Rosa, Mora and Springer. The Buffaloes are the likely favorite to win the entire thing in 2A has one of the most underrated players in 6-foot-3 sophomore guard Cade Barnard.

Active Streaks 10 games or more
16 - Hondo Valley Eagles
14 - Onate Knights
13 - Hope Christian
11 - Grants Pirates
11 - Bloomfield
10 - Centennial
10 - Melrose Buffaloes

Valley Home Court Advantage?

I just read the journal article on the Valley RG game. It said Valley has to "host" the district tournament championship and the first round state playoff game elsewhere due to the commencement of a construction project! That sucks for them! Work hard to host a couple of important games (state more so than DT) and have to go to neutral court! That could be the first round upset alert!

Week 14: More Bracket Talk. Compare the Resumes and Some Flaws

Using this thread to compare the resumes to the "no way" or the "they shouldn't be" posts, texts and emails.

First one - Santa Fe vs La Cueva - 6A Bubble

1. Finish in regular season district play - La Cueva (Runner Up)
2. Head to Head: None
3. Wins Against DC's: Santa Fe (1), La Cueva (1)
4. Overall Record: La Cueva 10 wins vs Santa Fe 9 Wins
5. Ranking: La Cueva 15, Santa 16
6. Input Form (Where Grine Chimes IN)

1. Santa Fe High in District 2-6A could finish second/third like La Cueva. Compare the strength of District. It's like comparing Runner Up from Mountian West to Fifth Place in ACC. (Might be exaggerating.) I side with Santa Fe. La Cueva is 1-3 against District 1-6A.
2. No Comment. Really Can't unless we have a play in game.
3. La Cueva beat Valley that is good however how much does time play into it. Santa Fe beat West from 4A but a really good 4A at that. I still side with La Cueva.
4. Overall Record: About the same but here is why I side with Santa Fe at 9 wins to La Cueva 10 wins. Santa Fe could likely have 10 wins if they played in 2-6A. Would La Cueva still have 10 wins if they played in 1-6A? Maybe should be a wash but I give the nod to Santa Fe.
5. A wash. Both a 15/16 but would Santa Fe High rise in the ranking if they played in 2-6A with a few more W's? Would La Cueva be 16 instead of 15 if they played in 1-6A at this point? Something to think about.
6. Maybe Santa Fe but it is a coin flip. La Cueva is 1-3 vs 1-6A. Santa Fe is 0-1 vs 2-6A.

Get Rid of Districts or Change it A Bit

What I would do. Agree or not but I think winning a district title like this would be more credible and would also bring back battles in district. Yes, moving Clovis to North - East is not favorable but they are moving to it anyway. I think District title would mean more and more head to head for state pairings. Just an idea

North - East
1. La Cueva
2. Sandia
3. Eldorado
4. Manzano
5. Highland
6. Valley
7. Clovis
8. Albuquerque

North - West
1. Cleveland
2. Rio Rancho
3. Santa Fe
4. Volcano Vista
5. West Mesa
6. Rio Grande
7. Atrisco Heritage
8. Cibola

South
1. Onate
2. Gadsden
3. Las Cruces
4. Mayfield
5. Deming
6. Hobbs
7. Alamogordo
8. Carlsbad

State Wrestling Tournament Preview

New Mexico High School State Wrestling Tournament Preview
By: Kyle Henderson of NMPreps.com | nmpreps@yahoo.com

The New Mexico High School State Wrestling Championships take place this weekend in Rio Rancho, New Mexico at the Santa Ana Star Center. Teams from all over the State will converge in a two-day event packed with action throughout. Today we preview what to expect at this year’s State Championships.

1787590.jpg

6A Preview

Cleveland is the heavy favorite going into the tournament. Dating back to 2007 Either Rio Rancho or Cleveland has claimed a big school state championship and if you ask the 6A wrestling community that is unlikely to change this weekend. The Storm qualified 13 with one wildcard which puts them with 14 wrestlers competing over the next two days. Rio Rancho qualified 12 with two wildcards as did Las Cruces, Rio Grande, Manznao, and Eldorado each qualified 13 wrestlers, Volcano Vista with 12, and Carlsbad with 11.

Storm enter with plenty of heavy hitters

Joseph Otero at 106 is a freshmen out of Cleveland that is a strong candidate to bring home the Blue entering the tournament with a record of 37-1. At 113 also from Cleveland is Treavon Nicoley who is a senior and has an outstanding record of 37-3. At 120 Cleveland is led by Noah Mirabal a junior with a record of 28-4, at 126 Michael Mascarenas is a junior with a record of 32-6, at 182 Santiago Apodaca is 25-3, Raymond Juarez at 195 is a junior who is 21-8, at 220 Brendon Armstead is 18-6, and at 285 pounds is Daimon Altamirano with a record of 25-6.

Returning 6A State Champs

113 - Treavon Nicoley - Cleveland - (Returning Champ)
170 - Kyle Snelling - La Cueva - (Returning Champ)

5A Preview - Will Belen be able to take down Piedra Vista

1787591.jpg

Piedra Vista enters this weekend’s State Tournament going for their 6th Straight Wrestling Championship. Last year under Head Coach Mike Bejar they were able to carry on the torch following what former Head Coach Levi Stout had built. This year the Wrestling Community is favoring the Belen Eagles who’s last state title game in 2008. The Eagles were once a dominating power in the wrestling world winning 6 state championships from 2004 to 2008.

The Eagles will rely on Danny Evans at 132 pounds, a sophomore who is 40-6 on the season, big favorite to win the weight class. Chris Robinson at138 is 24-4 on the season, at 145 Jeramie Flores is 28-5, at 152 Lano Luna is 33-15, at 160 Rowdy Robinson is 32-8, Gunner Robinson at 170 is 35-3, Nathaniel Martinez at 182 is 42-2, at 220 is Estevan Chavez who is 35-5, and at 285 is Matthew Burgueno with a record of 31-7, if anyone is going to take down Piedra Vista it’s this group right here.

Piedra Vista has a high caliber roster and won’t give up the title easily. Watch for Diego Sanchez-Morales at 106, he has a record of 33-10. At 120, Dylan Greenhaus has a record of 37-5, Marcos Candelaria has a record of 25-6, Taylor Antencio at 132 has a record of 31-9, Wes Reyburn at 138 has a record of 38-2, Nick Rino at 145 has a record of 20-3, Alberto Marquez at 195 has a record 28-9, and at 220 Adrian Tarwater has a record of 25-9.

At 145 pounds is Joseph Paul Griego at 145 pounds who is 28-4 on the season. Also watch for Jonathan Trujillo at 120 who is 24-4 on the season and Sophomore Tristan Trujillo who is 24-7 this year at 132 pounds. Cobre the likely team to give Robertson a run, returns some exceptional talent. Robert Rodriguez is 45-1 on the year at 132 pounds and Eric Morales is 39-6 overall at 120.

4 QUARTERS: NIGHTLY NOTES

1. District 2-4A Musical Chairs: West Las Vegas now in the lead at 4-1. Robertson and Pojoaque Valley at 3-2. West and Pojoaque Valley on Friday is for the title or a three way tango.

2. La Cueva Bubble No More? The Bears did work by 19 in a rivalry game. They no longer have to worry if their deposit was worth it because they are going dancing, pick up the tux. The question will be is it a one night rental or will they upset someone for a two night stay?

3. Espanola Valley looking to stay until the final song as they cut in on the Capital Jaguars song. Both teams now with 2-losses in district play. Does this push Capital to a 4-seed or move the Sundevils into the Top-4 seeds. Who gets the third seed - Capital, Farmington or Centennial or maybe Los Lunas?

4. Three Nights Left and Still Questions Unanswered. The one above on the 5A bracket. 2A, outside Melrose and maybe Mora is a mess. 1A who gets number one Cliff, Hondo or Springer? 3A Lordsburg, Texico, who's after? 6A Who gets left off that bubble. 4A who gets the home games, what about the 2-seed? Fun yet? Oh it's just starting.
