Week One: The Week That Was
Joshua J. Grine
Espanola Valley and Capital fans should start getting in line today for the match-up during district play. The Sundevils played in a sold out game at Gallup on Friday night in what was a post season environment but in November.
Do you need to ask anymore why these are the best places to play basketball?
After that we sprinkle in the 6A reigning champs getting a Top-25 win, a record breaker in girl's hoops and a 1A player who exploded for a double-double behind 41-points. After that it was a quiet week in terms of action but we have plenty of things that happened.
5: Out Of The Gates Firing
No. 22 Espanola Valley Sundevils
What did they do this week? The Espanola Valley Sundevils went into Gallup, a hostile environment, that was sold to capacity and controlled the entire game. This win wasn't a fluke win in Gallup, the Sundevils should now get more love come rankings.
No. 7 Hobbs Eagles
What did they do this week? The Hobbs Eagles won at No. 13 Las Cruces, giving them a (2-0) start over a pair of Top-25 teams. Plenty of early question marks to start the year one who the face of the Eagles would be, well a (2-0) start is impressive including both come over ranked opponents.
Mayfield Trojans
What did they do this week? The Mayfield Trojans who struggled last season, gave new head coach Williams Keys a huge win to open his head coaching career. The Trojans, unranked, opened the season with a 76-36 thrashing over Chaparral.
Cliff Cowboys
What did they do this week? The Cowboys opened the season without surprise (2-0). The Cowboys got wins over a pair of 4A teams. Yes, the 1A school beat Cobre (61-36) and Hot Springs (59-49). If you're looking for a favorite in 1A again why not place the money on these Cowboys.
Alamogordo Tigers
What did they do this week? The Tom Shields era couldn't have gone any better for the well traveled head coach. The Tigers open the season (2-0) and grabbed another win this week over Deming, 69-64. Will the Tiger keep the hot start going?

NMPreps.com At The Game: Tuesday Night
No. 20 Capital 62, Santa Fe Indian 41- Wednesday Night, November 18th
Well, the top half of the week is done. I agree with statements made above by NM_Shock. It is hard to get a read on the Capital Jaguars but what I saw was coach Ben Gomez do a phenomenal job manage this contest against a team that was playing "street ball" for the lack of a better term.
There is uptempo ball, I think Rio Rancho, who have a pattern and some discipline and then there is "here's a basketball, go crazy y'all". Santa Fe Indian took any and all open shots. I know it's game one but was taken back on this one. Santa Fe Indian will cause problems for some teams, luckily for the Jaguars they have a coach who knew how to manage this game and settle his players when needed.
Players
Eric Coca was a bit rushed with his decisions on attacking the paint with the style of Braves in the first quarter but quickly controlled the pace and had a stellar second quarter. He was a smart player and was a floor general out there. I sort of thought of him like Tim Jacobs of Onate from 2011. Not the same size but the coach on the court, controlled the pace and hit the open shot.
Capital has a sophomore guard that I really like. Young but quality little guard. Jeremy Anaya played well and a couple nice drives (one video).
Capital's defense was on-point. They new when to attack in transition or when a weaker guard was caught in the backcourt. Definitely could elaborate more on that.
The Extra
Food: I would run an on-going ranking of concession stands, well sorry the food critic couldn't wait in line. Every student at SFIS was in line both times I went up there.
Atmosphere: This gym is amazing. Not a bad seat in the house. Also, people are so nice in Santa Fe, welcoming folks.

Friday Night: Espanola Valley, Hobbs and Alamogordo Roll
Joshua J. Grine of NMPreps.com
The first Friday night with the highlight games of the evening. Oh yeah the first sell out of the season, in NOVEMBER!
BOYS
No. 22 Española Valley 62, Gallup 49: The Sundevils (1-0) open the season with a huge road win in Gallup, where they sell out a game in November. Not many places like this and this environment only takes place in certain towns. Uriah Arellano poured in 29-points in the win for the Sundevils.
No. 7 Hobbs 79, No. 12 Las Cruces 64: The defending champs extend their win streak to 9-games, improving to (2-0) on the season. The Las Cruces Bulldawgs fall to (0-2) on the young season.
Alamogordo 69, Deming 64: The Alamogordo Tigers are off to a (2-0) start with another win this week. Another Tiger led the way tonight with Dee Smith putting up 24-points in the win. Bishop Woodruff (14), Kamiron Bickham (13) and Jared Session (11) were others in double figures for the Tigers.
Week One: Top Performers (Men's)

No. 6 (6A) Hobbs 61, Lubbock-Coronado (TX) 54: One player we mentioned early this preseason was Amaya Lewis and she backed up her status with a 31-point night to lead the Lady Eagles to a (1-0) start.
No. 10 (6A) Alamogordo 64, Deming 36: Kristyn Archuleta broke an all-time school record on Friday night of career points. Archuleta who finished with 19 also passed the 1,150 point mark giving her the record. The Lady Tigers move to (2-0) on the season.
