Week One: The Week That Was. Everything in One Place

Week One: The Week That Was
Joshua J. Grine

Espanola Valley and Capital fans should start getting in line today for the match-up during district play. The Sundevils played in a sold out game at Gallup on Friday night in what was a post season environment but in November.

Do you need to ask anymore why these are the best places to play basketball?

After that we sprinkle in the 6A reigning champs getting a Top-25 win, a record breaker in girl's hoops and a 1A player who exploded for a double-double behind 41-points. After that it was a quiet week in terms of action but we have plenty of things that happened.

5: Out Of The Gates Firing

No. 22 Espanola Valley Sundevils

What did they do this week? The Espanola Valley Sundevils went into Gallup, a hostile environment, that was sold to capacity and controlled the entire game. This win wasn't a fluke win in Gallup, the Sundevils should now get more love come rankings.

No. 7 Hobbs Eagles

What did they do this week? The Hobbs Eagles won at No. 13 Las Cruces, giving them a (2-0) start over a pair of Top-25 teams. Plenty of early question marks to start the year one who the face of the Eagles would be, well a (2-0) start is impressive including both come over ranked opponents.

Mayfield Trojans

What did they do this week? The Mayfield Trojans who struggled last season, gave new head coach Williams Keys a huge win to open his head coaching career. The Trojans, unranked, opened the season with a 76-36 thrashing over Chaparral.

Cliff Cowboys

What did they do this week? The Cowboys opened the season without surprise (2-0). The Cowboys got wins over a pair of 4A teams. Yes, the 1A school beat Cobre (61-36) and Hot Springs (59-49). If you're looking for a favorite in 1A again why not place the money on these Cowboys.

Alamogordo Tigers

What did they do this week? The Tom Shields era couldn't have gone any better for the well traveled head coach. The Tigers open the season (2-0) and grabbed another win this week over Deming, 69-64. Will the Tiger keep the hot start going?

NMPreps.com At The Game: Tuesday Night

No. 20 Capital 62, Santa Fe Indian 41- Wednesday Night, November 18th

Well, the top half of the week is done. I agree with statements made above by NM_Shock. It is hard to get a read on the Capital Jaguars but what I saw was coach Ben Gomez do a phenomenal job manage this contest against a team that was playing "street ball" for the lack of a better term.

There is uptempo ball, I think Rio Rancho, who have a pattern and some discipline and then there is "here's a basketball, go crazy y'all". Santa Fe Indian took any and all open shots. I know it's game one but was taken back on this one. Santa Fe Indian will cause problems for some teams, luckily for the Jaguars they have a coach who knew how to manage this game and settle his players when needed.

Players
Eric Coca was a bit rushed with his decisions on attacking the paint with the style of Braves in the first quarter but quickly controlled the pace and had a stellar second quarter. He was a smart player and was a floor general out there. I sort of thought of him like Tim Jacobs of Onate from 2011. Not the same size but the coach on the court, controlled the pace and hit the open shot.

Capital has a sophomore guard that I really like. Young but quality little guard. Jeremy Anaya played well and a couple nice drives (one video).

Capital's defense was on-point. They new when to attack in transition or when a weaker guard was caught in the backcourt. Definitely could elaborate more on that.

The Extra
Food:
I would run an on-going ranking of concession stands, well sorry the food critic couldn't wait in line. Every student at SFIS was in line both times I went up there.

Atmosphere: This gym is amazing. Not a bad seat in the house. Also, people are so nice in Santa Fe, welcoming folks.

Friday Night: Espanola Valley, Hobbs and Alamogordo Roll
Joshua J. Grine of NMPreps.com

The first Friday night with the highlight games of the evening. Oh yeah the first sell out of the season, in NOVEMBER!

BOYS

No. 22 Española Valley 62, Gallup 49: The Sundevils (1-0) open the season with a huge road win in Gallup, where they sell out a game in November. Not many places like this and this environment only takes place in certain towns. Uriah Arellano poured in 29-points in the win for the Sundevils.

No. 7 Hobbs 79, No. 12 Las Cruces 64: The defending champs extend their win streak to 9-games, improving to (2-0) on the season. The Las Cruces Bulldawgs fall to (0-2) on the young season.

Alamogordo 69, Deming 64: The Alamogordo Tigers are off to a (2-0) start with another win this week. Another Tiger led the way tonight with Dee Smith putting up 24-points in the win. Bishop Woodruff (14), Kamiron Bickham (13) and Jared Session (11) were others in double figures for the Tigers.

Week One: Top Performers (Men's)

WOMEN'S

No. 6 (6A) Hobbs 61, Lubbock-Coronado (TX) 54: One player we mentioned early this preseason was Amaya Lewis and she backed up her status with a 31-point night to lead the Lady Eagles to a (1-0) start.

No. 10 (6A) Alamogordo 64, Deming 36: Kristyn Archuleta broke an all-time school record on Friday night of career points. Archuleta who finished with 19 also passed the 1,150 point mark giving her the record. The Lady Tigers move to (2-0) on the season.

No. 5 (5A) Valencia 77, No. 8 (4A) Sandia Prep 26: The Lady Jaguars moved to (1-0) with an opening night thrashing of the 4A Sandia Prep Lady Sundevils (0-1).

Preseason Rankings: No. 11 Volcano Vista Hawks

The 2015-2016 season has officially started and today we start our countdown of the top 50 programs in New Mexico Big School Division (6A-4A).

More: Preseason Rankings Home: 50-1 | Rankings 72-51 | Preseason Preview Page

The Volcano Vista Hawks return in 2015-2016 after a 16-10, 5-4 season in which they reached the state tournament.

Overview: It seems like each season the Volcano Vista Hawks return some serious talent. This season they could again return some players on our list of Top Players in the state of New Mexico. David Cormier a 6-foot-2 forward will be one to watch in 2015-2016. The Hawks ranked 11th (No. 9 NMPreps.com 6A Rankings) are a team that will return plenty and could be a favorite to play on the second to last day of the season (Final Four).

Last Season
Record: 16-10, 5-4
Home Record: 7-4
Away Record: 7-5
Neutral Record: 2-1
Post Season: First Round; Lost to Sandia (36-30)
Points per game: 47.6 (1238)
Points against: 45.6 (1186)

Realistic Prediction: The Hawks, much like Gadsden, slow the game way down and will keep things low on the scoreboard. This team has some talent and could be in-store for a breakout season, they have the ability to be an Elite Eight or dare we say Final Four team. Do we like slow down ball? Not particularly but it is their style and they have some talent to back up the pace. The thing we have them at first round or Elite Eight though is because, typically, when teams make runs at state they are fast tempo teams on the big PIT floor. All Final Four teams last season were fast paced teams. So our prediction is 15-19 wins and First Round.

Chances
District Champ: 70%
Playoff Team: 100%
Elite Eight: 55%
Final Four: 30%
Title Game: 15%

Returning Players: Another player that we are excited about is Jacob McNeely a 6-1 shooting guard who could be on the list for preseason all-state. McNeely, provides scoring and play making two things that the Hawks will need in March.

Roster

Preseason Rankings: No. 16 Cibola Cougars

The 2015-2016 season has officially started and today we start our countdown of the top 50 programs in New Mexico Big School Division (6A-4A).

More: Preseason Rankings Home: 50-1 | Rankings 72-51 | Preseason Preview Page

The Cibola Cougars went (14-13, 3-6) last season on their way to a state tournament appearance.

Overview: The Cibola Cougars are somewhat of an unknown team right now. Ranked No. 12 in 6A and 16th overall. The Cougars seem to be a program that turns out talent each year but end up a middle of the pack team. The Cougars likely another middle tier team in 6A this season with a couple prospects on the roster. Desmond Carpenter (2017) who started getting college interest this summer will be the prospect to watch for the Cougars. The Cougars have plenty to replace in terms of talent though and could be a team that either stays in the 16 conversation or falls off and out.

Last Season
Record: 14-13, 3-6
Home Record: 8-1
Away Record: 2-8
Neutral Record: 4-4
Post Season: First Round; Lost to Albuquerque (44-34)
Points per game: 52.55 (1419)
Points against: 48.92 (1321)

Realistic Prediction: Cibola has always been a tough team to rank in the preseason. Some years they have some seriously good talent and under preform to that ranking or precition. Some years we put them out because they lack that so-called talent and they make the Elite Eight. They do hold teams to 49 points, so defensively they are there, but they need to get better on the road going 2-8 just won't get you a first round playoff game. For now we have them on the fringe of 15-19 and 10-14, we gave them the benefit of 15-19 being that we have them ranked above others who we had without question winning 15-19 games.

District Champ: 10%
Playoff Team: 80%
Elite Eight: 15%
Final Four: 10%
Title Game: 5%

Returning Players: Desmond Carpenter is the highlighted name, they graduate six players and welcome back eight. They had four members from the 2017 class and two freshmen (2018) last season.

Preseason Rankings: No. 14 West Mesa Mustangs

The 2015-2016 season has officially started and today we start our countdown of the top 50 programs in New Mexico Big School Division (6A-4A).

More: Preseason Rankings Home: 50-1 | Rankings 72-51 | Preseason Preview Page

The West Mesa Mustangs are coming off one of their best seasons in over 20-years. At, (17-11, 4-4) the Mustangs made the Elite Eight, playing in the PIT.

Overview: Head coach Shonn Schroer has one of the hardest tasks in building a program that has lost kids, or population to brand new high schools Volcano Vista and Atrisco Heritage. Schroer, had one of his best teams last season, graduate some talent but have a foundation moving forward in 2015-2016. Most of what this season success' will be on the shoulders of Drew Wassana (2016) a forward/wing that averaged 15.3 points, 7.7 rebounds and 1.4 assists per game leading the team.

Last Season
Record: 17-11, 4-4
Home Record: 6-3
Away Record: 6-4
Neutral Record: 5-4
Post Season: Elite Eight; Lost to Hobbs (72-47)
Points per game: 56.4 (1581)
Points against: 53.6 (1501)

Realistic Prediction: It will be hard to duplicate an Elite Eight run for the Mustangs who graduated their point guard. Wassana, is a top talent, likely one of the best players in the Metro area this coming season (if the rumor is false that he has transferred) he could have them in any contest this season. For this team we have them at 15-19 wins, closer to 15, and a First Round Game for our realistic prediction.

District Champ: 40%
Playoff Team: 70%
Elite Eight: 15%
Final Four: 5%
Title Game: 1%

Returning Players: Wassana was huge for the Mustangs last season, after him they graduate plenty of what they did in 2014-2015 and plenty of holes need to be filled. Ray Griego, is the next scoring option after playing in 25 contests averaging 4.1 points and 2.4 rebounds per game.

Roster
Adan Maldonado (2016)
Ray Griego (2016)

Nic Little #14 Rio Rancho

So my son, Nic, got his 1st start at QB last night for the Rams. He has played his whole high school career in Reno NV as the starting QB (undeafeted 2 years in a row) and has played a lot of receiver this year. With Bailey out, Coach Howes gave him a shot and despite the loss, I think he had a great game. If you were there, I am curious on your thoughts of how he played! Sometimes parents are a little bias :)

New Mexico State Beats Louisiana

NMSU wins again, 37-34 on the road at Louisiana tonight to make it 3 in a row. NMSU moves to 3-7. This team could easily be 6-4 right now. Look like the program is going in the right direction under Doug Martin.

QB, Andrew Allen, led NMSU to the win on the same day he buried his father who is in law enforcement in Texas, was killed during a off-duty security job he was working.
