The Last Walk

6619FEF8-4310-4ECA-AD95-53CF392FC1D0_zpshi1hmeay.jpg
What a crazy ride this last 4 years has been! I feel like I just came off of the most exhilarating ride of my life! I would have never imagined myself as a football mom to my son Chris, who as a 1 year old would cry if he got dirt on his hands. Not in a million years would I have pictured that I would spend so much of my life watching my son pushing and hitting and tackling other kids and actually rooting him on to do it! I became this person that I never knew existed, a screaming lunatic every Friday night! It's amazing how many different emotions one can have in all of about 2 1/2 hours under those Friday night lights! I was happy, nervous, sick to my stomach, pissed, excited, confused, hungry, the list goes on and each emotion changed in the blink of an eye! For those few hours I didn't care what anybody thought about me, I was no longer a mom, I was a MOMSTER! I had to make sure I was the loudest person in the stands, my baby needed to hear me out on the field, the coaches needed to hear me when I thought I knew what plays were working or when they weren't working, the refs needed to hear me when I thought their calls were crap or when I cheered them on for a good call against the opposing team, all my sons teammates needed to hear me screaming their names when they did something amazing on that field! I'm sure the coaches won't miss my loud mouth;) I have been on that field after every game, wiping tears from eyes, crying, laughing, loving, and hugging every single one of my sons teammates making sure they knew how awesome they did win or lose!
Nothing can prepare you when that ride is over, not my ride, the ride of a 17 year old kid! I have watched these young men give up so much of their lives for this football ride! They get to start school 30 minutes before the rest of the high school does so they have plenty of time in the weight room, everyday m-f. Their last period is the start of football practice and they get home just before the sun goes down, they eat and hopefully make it to the shower before they pass out. Day in and day out this is their lives during football season! You rush them out the door on Friday morning and don't see them again until you hit that field after the game Friday night! Sleeping in on Saturday is non existent because you have to wake them up at 7 so they can be in film by 8. They get one week off at the end of the school year! One glorious week of vacation is all they get. They spend their summers waking up every weekday at 7 to be in the weight room by 8. They do 7 on 7s on top of that and camps and combines if they don't interfere with the team! They do all of this for 4 years and they never once complain about it, it's just their way of life!
Then that final game comes. You watch these boys hand in hand walk that field, one last time. The tears are raw, these boys have become more than just teammates, they have become brothers and they know for some, this will be the last time they will ever set foot on a football field again. The memories these young men have made are priceless, the bonds, the growing up, the experiences, the coaches, have all shaped these young men into the people they are! We have enjoyed every single second of it!
I wish every single one of you senior football players from every single team in the state of New Mexico good luck in everything that you do in life! This ride might be over but your journey is just beginning! It has been great watching what amazing young men you boys truly are, on the field and off the field!

Week Two Recaps & Reactions (Updated: 11/24)

Week Two: Recaps and Reactions
Joshua J. Grine of NMPreps.com

NMPreps.com At The Game
No. 4 Onate Knights (2-0) 52, No. 19 Los Lunas Tigers (0-1) 32: The No. 4 Onate Knights traveled north for the Thanksgiving break and come out with a 20-point win over Los Lunas High School.

The Knights and Tigers battled for a majority of the first quarter before the Knights applied a full court press to finish the quarter on a 7-0 run. The Knights then went on to a deciding second quarter with a 16-5 (35-17) advantage in the quarter.

Johnny McCants (W-F/2016), one of the state of New Mexico's top players started the night off early with a three of his four dunks coming in the first half.

McCants, led the way for the Onate Knights with 19-points. A feisty and young Los Lunas Tigers never backed down and were led by junior Kayden Walker with 10 points.

What We Liked
No. 4 Onate Knights (2-0): McCants was solid and he was all over the court from boarding to blocking shots but the unsung hero we really liked, not knowing going into the game, was Hunter Thomas (2017/G). A tiny little guard but he let it fly behind the arch.

The Knights pressed and it created easy buckets. Offensively they are well coached and patient when they need to be. I have always like Coach Perez coached teams but this one is different from the 2011 state title team, they are able to move in transition better and have many options. The platoon substitutions are evident to how deep they can be.

No. 19 Los Lunas Tigers (0-1): May sound weird but I liked the Tigers even in the 20-point loss. They are young but they have a few weapons of their own. Maybe not as deep as Knights, which hurt with subs during the 7-0 run.

One player I need to give more credit too is Kayden Walker. Walker has a nice hop to his game, and hit a 15 footer creating separation from the defender - looked nice. I was hoping he would take more control, maybe as the season progress he will but the Tigers lacked that "take over the game" type of player they had a few years back in Ben Romero. Mario Trujillo is another player that I left impressed with.

Extra
  • No Saterfield brothers for the Onate Knights.
  • No snack bar again. (sorry food critic is slacking).
  • Los Lunas has a nice newly renovated gym. The entire school is different from my last visit some 5 years ago.

Henderson Opinon Piece: NMAA needs to start thinking outside the box

NMAA needs to starting thinking outside the box
Opinion piece by Kyle Henderson the Publisher of NMPreps.com regarding the new NMAA Alignment for the 2016/2017/2018 block.

Clovis Injustice

i2iocynt8ptsakvse9ub

When the NMAA released their new alignments all I could think about was parents driving from Clovis, New Mexico to Albuquerque, New Mexico, making the 438 mile round trip again and again to watch their student athletes participate in weekly events. New Mexico is a rather large state, in-fact it's the 5th biggest state land wise after: Alaska, Texas, California, and Montana, so there is going to be driving no matter how you slice up the districts. However, putting Clovis in a district along side 4 Albuquerque Pubic Schools and Santa Fe doesn't make sense, doesn't add up, and it's an injustice to the whole community of Clovis, New Mexico. Speaking with my Clovis sources, the Wildcats will not appeal to the NMAA.

District 3-6A Is the New SEC
A loaded up Southern District includes: Carlsbad, Centennial, Gadsden, Hobbs, Las Cruces, Mayfield, and Onate. The 7 team district is the largest 6A district in the new format. The Las Cruces Public Schools will now be in the same district as Carlsbad and Hobbs. While winning the district title from this 7 team power league will mean something, again the distance between some of schools is outrageous, especially for sports like Basketball, Baseball, and Softball.

5 Bad District Placements
1. Clovis in District 2-6A along side Eldorado, La Cueva, Manznao, Sandia, and Santa Fe
My Advice: Clovis join UIL
2. Piedra Vista being placed along side Rio Rancho, Cleveland, Cibola, and Volcano Vista
My Advice: Transfer to Farmington
3. Hope Christian being placed along side Moriarty, NMMI, Portales, and Ruidoso
My Advice: Hope needs to join APS
4. Escalante and Ft. Sumner being the same district (492 mile round trip)
My Advice: Lots of coffee
5. Lordsburg and Jal being in the same district (772 mile round trip)
My Advice: Rent an airplane

Where The NMAA Got It Right
Moving away from 4 team districts. Winning those 4 team district championships de-valued their merit. The larger districts make winning a district championship really something to be proud about. Class 5A looks very good across the board and now Alamogordo as well as Deming are among the largest schools within the classification, two schools to make the state playoffs in all sports more competitive. Class 4A and Class 3A were well composed well for the most part.

We Need To Think Outside The Box
While having districts is normal to New Mexico, in order to advance competition wise we need to create even more competition and stop handing out so many state championship trophies. Right now the NMAA hands out (football): 6A Title, 5A Title, 4A Title, 3A Title, 2A Title (only 7 teams), No 1A for whatever reason, 8Man Title, and 6Man Title. That is 7 state champions!

North And South Divisions Is Worth Exploring
Picture this, winning a District Division Title would be an amazing accomplishment

Preseason Rankings: No. 10 Grants Pirates

The 2015-2016 season has officially started and today we start our countdown of the top 50 programs in New Mexico Big School Division (6A-4A).

More: Preseason Rankings Home: 50-1 | Rankings 72-51 | Preseason Preview Page

The Grants Pirates are coming off one of their best seasons in recent history at (19-11, 4-4) and reaching the Final Four.

Overview: The highest ranking, especially preseason ranking, in our history the Pirates of Grants, New Mexico come into the season ranked 10th in the state (No. 1 NMPreps.com 5A Rankings). Head coach Joseph Sanchez has quickly put the Pirates on the 5A map in a short two seasons reaching the Elite Eight in his first season and then the Final Four last season. The Pirates return a talented roster led by 6'5", Richie Lucero who led the team in scoring at 17 ppg and rebounds at 7.9.

Last Season
Record: 19-11, 4-4
Home Record: 6-3
Away Record: 7-6
Neutral Record: 6-2
Post Season: Final Four; Lost to Gallup (70-36)
Points per game: 62.9 (1888)
Points against: 56.3 (1689)

Realistic Prediction: The Pirates have a huge target on their back as one of the top teams returning in 2015-2016. The Pirates are deep this season and their roster only gets stronger with the addition of Mike Chambers, who helped the Magdalena Steers to a 2A state championship last season. This is a dangerous and talented team, we see them as a 20-win team, but they will play a tough schedule featuring the Maxpreps Holliday Classic in California. We have them as a State Title Game team on our poll as well.

Chances
District Champ: 100%
Playoff Team: 100%
Elite Eight: 99%
Final Four: 98%
Title Game: 92%

Returning Players: We have hit on Lucero and Chambers but the roster is loaded (did we mention that) with the likes of 6'6, 320 pound center in Bradley Hatten. Also, the Pirates have junior Matt Vail, a smooth shooter that penetrates well for the Pirates and helped them upset the 3-seed Roswell Coyotes last season.

Roster
Richie Lucero (2016)
Bradley Hatten (2016)
Mike Chambers (2016)
Keziah Hocker (2016)
Trey Narramore (2016)

Preseason Rankings: No. 8 Sandia Matadors

The 2015-2016 season has officially started and today we start our countdown of the top 50 programs in New Mexico Big School Division (6A-4A).

More: Preseason Rankings Home: 50-1 | Rankings 72-51 | Preseason Preview Page

The Sandia Matadors are coming off a 16-11, 7-1 season reaching the Elite Eight game.

Overview: The Sandia Matadors might have one of the best teams outside of the Top-4 in 6A boy's basketball. Head coach Alvin Broussard has had the Matadors as one of the top 6A teams consistently since arriving as head coach. The Matadors again will have a deep roster with talent all the way down. The big man on campus is 6-foot-8 forward in Caleb Wroten who is one of the best back to the basket big men in New Mexico. Wroten averaged a double-double last season with 12.3 points and 10.7 rebounds per contest along with 1.7 blocks per game.

Last Season
Record: 16-11, 7-1
Home Record: 6-4
Away Record: 7-6
Neutral Record: 3-1
Post Season: Elite Eight; Lost to Cleveland (81-77 OT)
Points per game: 56 (1514)
Points against: 51.4 (1388)

Realistic Prediction: The Matadors nearly upset the Cleveland Storm in the Elite Eight before losing a fourth quarter lead. The Matadors are still searching to get over the hump having lost in two Elite Eights and a Final Four in 2014. This team, in all honesty, could be ranked higher and might be my underdog favorite to go to the title game. Right now we predict them at 15-19 wins and an Elite Eight game.

Biggest Questions: Are they a two-man show? Will they play to their strengths in that two-man show?

Chances
District Champ: 90%
Playoff Team: 100%
Elite Eight: 95%
Final Four: 85%
Title Game: 75%

Returning Players: Well, if you read the biggest question section we look at the two man show. The other player that creates the 1-2 punch in the guard to post man game is Bobby Tapia a 5-9 shooting guard who was one of the best, unknown, guys to shine in the state tournament last season.

Roster
Jeremiah Stanley (2016)
Eric Sandlin (2016)
Caleb Wroten (2016)
Bobby Tapia (2017)
Zion Caston (2018)

No. 50 ROSE MOON

Moon, only a freshman that will graduate in 2019 is having a special season for a top team in her classification. With 228 kills (46.5%), 60 aces and 150 digs on the season it was hard to not take notice of a player putting those type of numbers up in her first varsity season. The 5'8 outside hitter has plenty to improve on the next four years but we are sure you will her this name for a few years.

No. 49 ELLIE BREEDEN
St. Mike's (Santa Fe, NM) | Junior | 6' | MB

Breeden, is quietly helping the Lady Horsemen this season into what should be a state tournament birth with great play down the stretch. Breeden has 66 kills and 133 (leads the state) blocks on the season. Likely, an all-state selection for Breeden this season but her work is still in progress into the post season.

No. 48 LEAH WEATHERS

Weathers, is considered one of the best when it comes to assists in New Mexico. Currently she leads her team with 398 on the year along with 184 digs on the season. Weathers plays for one of the top teams in Goddard High School and will hope to lead her team into the post season.

Ledezma, plays for the 11-5 Artesia Lady Bulldogs who are setting up for a spot in the 2015 post season. Ledezma has been a huge part to the Lady Bulldogs success this season. No. 45 LEXIE JACKSON
Farmington HS (Farmington, NM) | Junior | 5'2" | L

Jackson a capitan for the Farmington Lady Scorpions has helped the squad to a (9-7, 3-1) start to the season and looking to make a late season push into the post season. Jackson has had a stellar start to the season with 437-digs and 288 serve receptions on the season to this point.

No. 44 PEYTON LINTHICUM
Valencia HS (Los Lunas, NM) | Senior | 5'11" | OH

Linthicum has helped the Valencia Lady Jaguars to a 6-10, 2-4 start to the season and currently has her team on the bubble for the 5A post season. Peyton has done a lot for the team including 193 kills, 150 digs, and 174 serve receptions on the season. We hear nothing but solid things about this Peyton this season and helping her team.

No. 43 HAYLEY TORRES
Los Lunas HS (Los Lunas, NM) | Sophomore | 5'7" | OH

Torres is part of a talented sophomore class in New Mexico and plays for one of the top 5A teams in the state. Torres only a sophomore playing with talented upperclassmen but she has done well in several areas across the board with 92 kills, 130 digs, and 30 aces.

No. 42 ASHLYNN TRUJILLO

6A up for grabs

It's been a long time since I have seen this many quality 6A (used to be 5A) squads. You could make a case for any one of the top 10 making the finals. La Cueva jumped smack in the middle of the mix last night. I really feel like the team that stays focused and gets better throughout the year will end up winning it all. Or maybe it will be the team that just gets hot at the end. The point is there is no easy path to the championship this year. The quality of basketball in NM, overall, is really high right now.
