5 DAILY TRENDS FOR THURSDAY NIGHT

No. 1 La Cueva - Trending Up
No. 11 Eldorado - Trend is Even
LCHS 3, EHS 0:
The La Cueva Bears move to (16-0, 5-0) and likely moving into the playoffs with a perfect record. The team is dominate and the trend stays moving up with a win over rival Eldorado. The Eagles (8-7, 2-3) still at this point a playoff team but a middle seed could be in jeopardy.

No. 2 St. Pius - Trending Up
No. 16 Academy - Even Trend
SP 3, AA 0:
Pius proved that they are the top team for a reason. Academy might fall in the middle tier to stay.

No. 3 Sandia Prep - Trending Up
Santa Fe Indian - Trending Down
SP 3, SFIS 0:
Sandia Prep moves to 15-0 and adds another victory to a season that could go without a loss. SFIS, if they had any hope for a post season, proved that maybe this year is not the year.

No. 12 Cibola - Trending Up
No. 6 Volcano Vista - Trending Down
CHS 3, VV 0:
The Cibola Cougars (10-4, 2-2) got a much needed revenge on the Volcano Vista Lady Hawks (10-5, 4-1). Volcano still holds the district lead but a top 3 seed could be without question.

No. 8 Texico - Trending Up
Eunice - No Trend
THS 3, EHS 0:
The No. 8 team in the state of New Mexico continued their dominance and at (14-1) this team is likely unstoppable at this point.

DAILY TREND FOR WEDNESDAY NIGHT

WEDNESDAY
Los Alamos over Del Norte, 3-0
Monte Del Sol over Santa Fe Prep, 3-2

Los Alamos - Trending Up
Del Norte - No Trend
LA 3, DN 0
: Los Alamos continues to win (13-3, 4-0) and likely won't drop a game during this district. Wins in this district won't improve as much as a loss would hurt. Del Norte doesn't trend down moving to (8-6, 3-1) on the season as the remain in second place. A runner-up should keep them in the playoff race with the bottom three IN.

Carry over Trend (Scores reported late for Tuesday)
No. 4 Centennial - Trending Up
No. 19 Santa Teresa - Trend is Even
CHS 3, ST 0:
Centennial goes to (13-2, 4-1) on the season and will to the rematch with Los Lunas on Saturday. Santa Teresa at (11-4, 3-2) doesn't hurt their resume with a loss to the No. 4 team in New Mexico but can't afford a loss to the bottom three teams.

No. 11 Eldorado - Trending Up
Manzano - Trending Down
EHS 3, MHS 0:
Eldorado improves to (8-6, 2-2) on the season and any win will only keep them alive for a top-6 talk in the 6A seeds. Manzano needs a signature win and a (7-7, 1-3) that might not be enough to get one of the final spots.

Gadsden - Trending Up
No. 18 Las Cruces - Trending Down
GHS 3, LC 1:
The Gadsden Lady Panthers (8-8, 2-2) improved their bubble chances and with Manzano losing above, this will serve as a signature win needed to win an argument over other bubble teams. Las Cruces, ranked 18th in the state, suffer another huge loss (the other was earlier against Alamogordo). The Lady Bulldawgs move to (8-8, 2-2) on the season and tie with Gadsden and Mayfield for 2nd place in 3-6A.

Carlsbad - Trending Moved Up
Clovis - Trending Down
Carl 3, Clovis 2:
Neither team is likely going dancing this season but any hope that Clovis had to improve their chances was just smashed. Carlsbad will be using any win to bring momentum for the following season but improve to (4-14, 2-2), moving into third place in district. Clovis falls into the cellar at (4-13, 1-3).

QUICK HIT - DAILY TRENDS

No. 2 St. Pius X - Trending Up
No. 17 Moriarty - Trend Down
SPX 3, MHS 0
: Again the Lady Sartans prove that they are No. 2 for a reason and move to (12-2, 2-0) on the season. The trend is up because the Moriarty Lady Pintos (12-3, 0-1) should have been a stronger opponent and maybe true colors were shown with this loss.

No. 3 Sandia Prep - Trending Up
Hope - Trend is Even
SP 3, HC 0:
The Sandia Prep Lady Sundevils are the the number three team in the state for a reason and move to (14-0, 3-0) after a stomping of rival Hope on Tuesday night. Prep trends up even as a favorite because we had questions verse a long rival like Hope. Test over they are the real deal.

No. 5 Onate - Trending Up
No. 13 Mayfield - Trend is Even to Down
OHS 3, MHS 0:
The Onate Lady Knights move to (11-5, 4-0) on the season and answered the question if they were the real deal. The trend up with the fact they had a tough opponent in a top-25 team and came away with a sweep. Mayfield (11-6, 2-2) trends down today with not only a loss but a sweep.

No. 7 Los Lunas - Trend is Even
Valencia - Trend is Even
LL 3, VHS 0:
Los Lunas Lady Tigers move to (11-4, 5-0) on the season and the number seven team in the state continues to trend up, even though we put even today. This team is playing hot lately and a sweep over your rival is always impressive. Valencia (6-8, 2-3) has work to do to stay on the bubble with a loss here and falling under .500 in district.

No. 8 Texico - Trend is Even
Dexter - No Trend
THS 3, DHS 0:
The little engine that could and storyline of the volleyball season wins again. When we think of the Lady Wolverines (13-1, 1-0) you think of CFB teams like Boise State or Butler in basketball. The team wins with ease and likely won't lose the rest of the way.

No. 9 Roswell - Trend is Even
Lovington - Trending Down
RHS 3, LV 0:
The Lady Coyotes (13-2, 1-0) start the district race with a convincing win over Lovington. The Coyotes will be a huge threat this post season and should be a lock.

No. 12 Cibola - Trending Up
Santa Fe - Trending Down
CHS 3, SF 0:
The Lady Cougars move to (10-4, 2-2) on the season and got a much needed win after the defending 6A champs fell out of the top-10 this week. The Lady Demons of Santa Fe (7-8, 1-3) suffered another tough loss and will have their work cut out for them in order to make the state tournament.

Artesia - Trending Up
No. 23 Goddard - Trending Down
AHS 3, GHS 1:
The Artesia Lady Bulldogs (11-4, 1-0) needed this win after falling out of the top-25 and this improves their resume for a seed in the state tournament. The Goddard Lady Rockets (10-6, 0-1) lose and could put them on the final four on the bubble.

Albuquerque High - Trending Up
West Mesa - Trending Down
AHS 3, WM 1:
This game will hurt West Mesa in the long run, looking for a seed into the state tournament. The Lady Bulldogs moved to (6-7) overall on the season but more importantly they move into sole possession of first with a 3-0 record. The Lady Mustangs move to (6-8) on the season and now have work to do falling to (3-1) in district play.

Week 9 What to Watch: Big Three, Questions and Players to Watch

WEEKEND WATCH LIST

WEEKEND BIG THREE (sort of four)

R-E-S-P-E-C-T Game (Yes, the song)
No. 2 St. Pius X vs No. 16 Albuquerque Academy, Thursday: The Sartans come into the game at (12-2, 1-0) coming off a monster win over Moriarty on Tuesday night. The Sartans right now are looking at a
potential one seed in the state tournament. Not only is Albquerque Academy (11-4, 1-0) a ranked opponent they are a long rival to Pius.

Bubble Game (Cherry Red Flavor)
Valencia vs Espanola Valley, Saturday: Neither squad is ranked but both are on the so-called bubble for 5A teams hunting for a seed. Valencia right now at (6-8, 2-3) has the slight edge on our rank of bubble teams. This win will not "help" but could possibly pop the mythical bubble if they drop this contest. Espanola Valley (7-7, 1-2) could only benefit from this win and likely jump over Valencia with a dub (win) in this contest.

Double Take for Second (No slip Up's)
Deming vs Gadsden; Las Cruces vs Mayfield, Saturday: Okay of the four Deming is just trying to play the spoiler game at (6-9, 0-4) the playoffs are all but over with. Now, for the excitement of district play and playoff
talk. Gadsden (8-8, 2-2), Las Cruces (8-8, 2-2) and Mayfield (11-6, 2-2) are all currently tied in second place and in the hunt behind Onate. We haven't spent time to determine a potential tie breaker, so we just list the three in second place. Gadsden could make a jump from a week ago and with a win move into third/second. The loser of Las Cruces and Mayfield falls a game behind. Las Cruces took round one at LCHS but now the Mayfield Lady Trojans hope to seek revenge against the rival of Las Cruces' oldest high schools.

WEEKEND QUESTIONS FOR TOP-25 TEAMS

Can they run the table? La Cueva (14-0, 4-0) is currently ranked No. 1 (NMPreps.com Top-25 Team Rankings) and they get to square off with No. 11 Eldorado (7-6, 1-2) who could use the win for seed talk.

Who's number one in 5A? Los Lunas is ranked 7th in the state at (10-3, 4-0) and took the first match over No. 4 Centennial (13-2, 3-1). The rematch is in Las Cruces and both could be fighting for the top seed. (Yes, St. Pius X is currently number one but never know)

Is this team one to look at when considering a top-3 seeds? Roswell is ranked 9th in the state of New Mexico and at (13-2, 1-0) this team can't afford any loss. Artesia, a team searching to earn it's respect back is a scary opponent to show Roswell's true colors this late in the game.

PLAYERS THIS WEEKEND

Jordan Holland (Los Lunas) vs. Savannah Bush (Centennial): Both players bring the high profile, next level prospect, name to the game. Excitement, well yes!

Alina Vanecek (Abq Academy) vs. Kayla Griego (St. Pius X): Both made the all-state list a year ago and this match up brings more excitement in 5A this weekend. Vanecek has 234 kills, 43 serving aces.

Annabelle Kubinski (La Cueva) vs. Brigette Lowe (Eldorado): La Cueva has plenty of power to list but we look at the sophomore sensation in Kubinski to lead the charge as an x-factor. 119 kills on the season she could be the name this
weekend. Lowe has 195 kills this season and has seen her name mentioned before, this weekend she gets to display it as a headline if they win.

TUESDAY NIGHT WATCH LIST
TUESDAY BIG THREE

Seed Game
Gadsden vs. Las Cruces: The Gadsden Lady Panthers (7-8) fell under .500 last week and out of the Top-25 last week. Right now searching for a signature win to help their case for the state tournament. Las Cruces (8-7) still ranked in the top-25 are looking to only improve their stock, a win won't really help but a loss will be detrimental to the seed.

Bubble Game
West Mesa vs. Albuquerque High: West Mesa (6-7) is leading the district race right now in 5-6A but this could potentially be the make a break type of game. Likely one team is going dancing from this district, the winner of this match could be the one dancing. Albuquerque (5-7) also undefeated in 5-6A was the favorite to win this district, tonight they get to live up to that.

Intriguing Game
Goddard vs. Artesia: This contest is a potential 4A seed game but brings two talented squads. Goddard (10-5) has been playing well lately and bring in a 2-game win streak. Goddard still ranked in the top-25 needs this game to stay in conversation for a playoff spot, with 4A teams on the rise they can't afford any loss. Artesia (10-4) recently fell out of the top-25 and needs a game to get back into the conversation.

TUESDAY QUESTIONS

Is Manzano a playoff team?
They square off with Top-25 Eldorado tonight in a "scary" game for the Lady Eagles. Manzano is a decent squad, they could be the upset flavor on any night.

Is Sandia the better team, they play Cibola? Last season Cibola played spoiler to Sandia in the state tournament as Sandia was the one seed and lost to the Cougars. Now Sandia comes in as this underrated, I use that loosely, team in this contest trying to spoil the Lady Cougars playoff hopes.

Is Onate the real deal? The Lady Knights are coming off as the team of the week last week (week 8) and play a game to prove their dominance with top-25 opponent Mayfield tonight. Onate can improve their stock with this win as they are the potential 2-seed in the state tournament. Magical season or has the dust settled? They are 8-0 vs. New Mexico teams.

GIVE ME SIX: PLAYERS TO WATCH

Today, I am listing six players that are top players in New Mexico but also six players that are making the NMPreps.com teams Miss Volleyball shortlist of candidates.

  • Catherine Kelly (Sandia Prep): The sophomore could take the trophy if the Lady Sundevils stay perfect.
  • Alina Vanecek (Albuquerque Academy): Leading the state with 218 kills, Vanecek is a must watch. Her stock is high right now, she should dominate the contest Tuesday vs 1-win Grants.
  • Brigette Lowe (Eldorado): Lowe has been mentioned this season and has been one of the best players. She and the Lady Eagles take on Manzano Tuesday. Lowe has 195 kills this season ranking 5th.

Other 3 Not Playing Tuesday, But Worth the Mention
  • Lyric Ellison (Volcano Vista): One of the most consistent players this season, Ellison is a must watch any night.
  • Abigail Stomp (La Cueva): Stomp is a D-1 commit and maybe not the profile game Tuesday (or any game) but watch out for Thursday.
  • Alyssa Adams (Moriarty): Adams another sophomore makes the list this season and has been impressive this season. This district is tough and she has her work cut out for her but to this point she has held her own. *Note Moriarty is actually taking on St. Pius X on Tuesday night. This is a huge game. Sorry for the oversight.

Any thoughts on Tuesday night?

Will schools like Lovington, La Cueva, and Carlsbad return as football powers?

Will schools like Lovington, La Cueva, and Carlsbad return as football powers?

La Cueva is 2-5 this year. Very strange not even mentioning them in the playoff hunt. What separates them from Eldorado this year? What is coming up the pipe at La Cueva in the future? How many people are moving into the area?

Carlsbad went 2-8 last year and many thought this would be a huge turn-around season under Gary Bradley, but here are the Cavemen at 0-7 heading into district play. Why are the Cavemen 2-15 over the last two-years? What separates Artesia and Carlsbad?

Lovington has lost their last 9 out of 10 games! Holy cow. How much has moving up a classification hurt this program? Is it more than that? Will Lovington ever return as a football power?

Looking Ahead, We Have Some Questions in 6A

Today, we look at a few questions for the preseason. Basketball features and talk is about to start heating up.

Is Rio Grande a playoff team?
Can Albuquerque High return to the Final Four?
Can Cleveland reload or will they be a bottom bubble team?
Chances you give Hobbs (0-100%) on repeating or returning to the title game?
Is Valley a viable favorite to play in the 6A title game?
Will Carlsbad ready for showtime (title game or bust)?
Who is your preseason candidate for Mr. Basketball? (Speak now)
Rank a district.
Who is the best guard?
Who is the best forward?
Who are the D-1 prospects?
Who are other next level (D-2 to JUCO) prospects?

Shea Patterson

Shea Patterson is now the number one ranked high school football player in the nation, all positions. He plays QB for IMG Academy in Florida....Notable because he is the cousin of the Pattersons of Rio Rancho High School- Austin (playing football for ENMU) Brady (playing basketball for ENMU), Clay (junior at RR), and David (Freshman at RR) Shea will be the QB in the Army all star game this year.....
