NMPreps.com Week 8 Players and Team of the Week

Leilani Baker (Rio Rancho/Class of 2017) Scoring goals against your rival high school is always an exciting thing to do. This week, Leilani Baker knocked in 2 to give the Rams a victory over rival Cleveland Storm. Baker has scored multiple goals in two other games this year, against Cibola and Onate. Baker has scored 9 goals on the season, 4 coming in district play, making her a top player in her district.

Jonathan Sanchez (Goddard/Class of 2017) Getting the ball in the back of the net is not a new concept to Jonathan Sanchez. Sanchez has racked in 23 goals in 12 games so far this season. He scored 3 against Ruidoso, Hatch Valley and Roswell, 4 against Portales and an impressive 6 against Robertson. However, the most important goals Sanchez has scored came this week when he knocked in 3 to tie a very powerful Roswell squad.

Goddard Boys (6-6-1) Roswell Boys soccer came into this week with a solid 10-2 record. They had a matchup with the Goddard Rockets where they were the clear favorite. However, the Rockets had a different plan. With 3 goals by Jonathan Sanchez that were assisted by Jorge Villa, the Rockets would go on to tie the Coyotes 3-3. Goddard had lost 1-6 previously this year.

No. 12 Mayfield 31, No. 16 Onate 24
Thursday Night at the Field of Dreams it looked as though No. 16 ranked Onate (NMPreps.com Top 25) has Mayfield on the ropes leading 17-0 in the second quarter. However, Mayfield’s Joeray Valencia would connect with Gaven Swinson right before half to make it 17-7 Knights going into the break. The Trojans then outscored Onate 17-7 in the 3rd quarter thanks to a 33-yard touchdown run by Isaac Vance and a 70-yard touchdown from Valencia to Ethan Alvarado to make it 24-all in the 4th quarter. Tonight 4-2 Volcano Vista (Pictured) takes on 5-1 Cibola in the Metro Area Game of the week.

No. 1 Cleveland - Open
The Cleveland Storm are 6-0 entering their open week as they prep for their district opener in two weeks against Santa Fe. The Storm defeated Eldorado in a shootout last week 41-34. On the season they are scoring an incredible 48.3 points per game.

No. 2 Alamogordo @ No. 6 Artesia
The Bulldogs dropped their first game of the season losing to Las Cruces 41-25 last week. Though they were missing starting quarterback Justin Houghtaling, Sophomore Taylor Null threw for 350-yards. Alamogordo might be the hottest team in New Mexico and enter with a 6-0 record and scoring 54 points per game. Junior Quarterback Kyle Hooper is 103-173 passing for 1,868-yards with a touchdown/interception ration of 20/0. Last week Alamogordo defeated Deming 56-12. Game Note: Artesia Quarterback Justin Houghtaling will be on the sidelines against nursing a strained calf muscle.

No. 3 Eldorado vs. No. 23 La Cueva
The Eldorado Eagles head into their rivalry game against La Cueva with a record of 5-1 and coming off a brutal stretch which included: Volcano Vista, Mayfield, and Cleveland. Their lone loss on the season was against Cleveland last week falling to the Storm 41-34 proving this team has the talent to make a real run come November or quite possibly December. Last year La Cueva actually won this match up 17-14 off a last second field goal by Jacob Turcotte. The Bears are 2-4 on the season and coming off a 38-7 win over Del Norte. Keep an eye on Noah Hill and Jonathan Stroman who each back in the line-up. for the Bears Eldorado is the big favorite, but La Cueva won’t just roll over.

No. 4 Centennial vs. Los Lunas
The Hawks 5-0 on the season open up district play against Los Lunas tonight at the Field of Dreams. On the season Centennial has scored 45.0 points on the season and is our No. 1 ranked team in Class 5A under Head Coach Aaron Ocampo. Two weeks ago Centennial roles past El Paso Socorro 48-7, the week before that they survived a shootout against Las Cruces winning 42-35. The Tigers are 2-3 on the season and led by Running Back O’Mauary Samuels who has rushed for 498-yards and 7 touchdowns, he also holds an offer form New Mexico State and is hearing from Arizona State. The Tigers were idle in week 6, their last two victories have come in the way of shutout beating Rio Grande 42-0 and Del Norte 26-0.

No. 5 Las Cruces @ No. 22 Deming
Now 4-2 on the season, Las Cruces will open up district play on the road against No. 22 Deming 3-3 in a key District 3-6A match up. Last week against Artesia in a 41-25 victory Senior Bulldawg Quarterback Kameron Miller who is also newly committed to New Mexico threw for 98-yards, rushed for 241-yards, and scored 3 touchdowns. On the season Miller a total of 1,910-yards with 18 touchdowns. Deming has been up and down this year, two weeks ago they beat Santa Fe 51-7, last week they were beat on the road by Alamogordo losing 56-12. Watch for Wildcat Quarterback Dante Urrea who has over 500-yards both passing and throwing and 14 touchdowns.

No. 7 Volcano Vista vs. No 10 Cibola
It’s the biggest game of the season so far for Volcano Vista now 4-2 after their 43-7 win over West Mesas last week. The start of district play in District 1-6A is crucial as 4-teams likely will make the playoffs. The Hawks personnel wise are favored to win this game against their West Side Rival Cibola who is a surprise at 5-1. Hawk’s Quarterback Josh Williams has thrown for 1,177-yards and 12 touchdowns, Chris Streetz has rushed fro 587-yards, Brian Parks leads the team in tackles with 43. The Cougars are coming off a 60-22 victory thanks to Kazyan Martin, their junior running back who scored 5 touchdowns. Also watch for Gannon Chavez at quarterback who has been on point lately, hooking up with Christian Winters for some important touchdowns. On defense, Jeremiah Bell is one of the top linebackers in Albuquerque.

No. 8 Rio Rancho @ Santa Fe
The Rams now 4-2 on the season open up district play on the road against 0-6 Santa Fe. In week 6, the Rams defeated Atrisco Heritage 33-7, thanks to 330-yards passing from Steven Bailey and 100-yards rushing from Josh Foley. On defense for Rio Rancho watch for linebacker duo Vinny Palmeri and Trey Parnell who have a combined 100-tackles on the season. The Demons have been outscored 251-53 on the season, last week they lost to Los Alamos 49-13.

No. 9 Clovis vs. Grants
Losing three in a row, clearly this is a great opportunity for Clovis to build back some confidence against Grants, a team really they should not even be playing. Last week the Wildcats were defeated by Frenship, Texas 29-21, playing most of the game without star running back Micah Gray who was carted off the field in the 2nd quarter with a bruised neck injury (he’ll be back in a few weeks). Clovis still controls their own playoff destiny with all their district games in the weeks to follow. Quarterback Daulton Hatley has thrown for 588-yards and 5 touchdowns, last week he connected twice with Roland Chavez for long touchdowns. The Grants Pirates are 4-2 on the year coming off a 53-14 loss to Farmington.

No. 11 Manzano vs. No. 14 Sandia
Jumping back into the playoff conversation was Manzano who pulled off a giant upset last week defeating Mayfield 21-17 in Albuquerque to move to 3-3 on the season. Quarterback Orlando Perez threw two late touchdowns in the game. This week Manzano takes on Sandia 4-2 who was actually the preseason district favorite. The Matadors survived winless Carlsbad last week 10-7. While each team is currently predicted to reach the playoffs, losing this game at this point in the season would be a giant setback. Get your popcorn ready, should be a good one. Watch for Jimmy Gallegos from Sandia, he’s had multiple games where he has scored 5 touchdowns.

No. 13 Hobbs vs. Lovington
Now 3-3 on the season, Hobbs will get back to work Friday Night at Watson Memorial against Lea County Rival Lovington. Against Lubbock Coronado last week the Eagles allowed 58 points, on the season Hobbs is given up 31.0 points per game, on offense they are scoring 38 per game. No doubt a team built off a fast paced offense, watch for Quarterback Isaac Amaya who is 168-237 passing for 2,143-yards with 23 touchdowns and just 3 interceptions. The Wildcats are 1-4 this season and are coming off a 26-20 loss to Capital.

No. 15 St. Pius X vs. Rio Grande
Still undefeated and still rolling teams on the season, St. Pius X 6-0 is again the big favorite this Friday Night against Rio Grande. Last week Quarterback Drew Ortiz racked up 5 touchdowns as the Sartans routed St. Michael’s 41-12. St. Pius X has been dominate on both sides of the football scoring 41.1 points per game and allowing just 7.5. Rio Grande is 0-5 this year and coming off a 54-0 loss to Onate.

No. 18 Roswell vs. Moriarty
Head Coach David Lynn has landed Roswell into the NMPreps.com Top 25 after an impressive win last week against Piedra Vista to move to 4-2 on the season. The Coyotes have actually won 4 in a row dating back to September 18th during their 43-8 win over Silver. Quarterback Dominic Anaya has thrown for 492-yards and rushed for another 267-yards on the season. The Pintos head to the Wool Bowl riding a 2 game winnings streak beating Gallup last week 53-8. On the season Moriarty is led by Senior Running Back Allen Michel who has rushed for over 1,000-yards already in just 6 games.

No. 19 Farmington vs. No. 20 Piedra Vista
While both Farmington at 5-1 and Piedra Vista 4-2 being district play tonight, this outcome could very well be for the district title. Hutchinson Stadium should be packed for a cross town rivalry featuring some of the best teams in Farmington in years. Last weekend Farmington beat Grants 53-14, Piedra Vista dropped their second game of the season losing to Roswell 19-10.

No. 21 Goddard @ Carlsbad
Goddard now at 3-3 on the season heads to Ralph Bowyer Stadium to take on 0-6 Carlsbad. Last weekend the Rockets beat Fabens, Texas 41-13 thanks to 4 touchdowns from Quarterback Cameron Stevenson and a 93-yard kick-return from Devon Qurioz. As mentioned the Cavemen are winless, but they have taken every opponent the distance, last week they came up just 4 points shy from beating Sandia on the road.

No. 24 Hatch @ Socorro
At 6-0 on the season, the Bears are ranked No. 1 overall in Class 4A and coming off a 60-6 victory over Tularosa in week 6. Socorro at 4-1 will be one of the better teams Hatch has played at least record wise n the last few weeks, its an important district game to say the least. Senior Running Back Adrian Grajeda has ran for 672-yards and 11 touchdowns this season, the Bears are scoring 49.3 points per game. Caoch Quevin Redding has turned things around at Socorro, remember last year the Warriors went 0-10. The Warriors are coming off a 44-43 OT victory over Academy.

No. 25 Espanola Valley - Open
One of the bigger mid-season stories of the year has been Espanola Valley Football. The Sundevils are 6-0 for the first time in school history coming off a 60-16 win over Taos in which the offense racked up nearly 700-yards of yardage. They are idle this week and have two weeks to prep for the Del Norte Knights.

Grine: One-on-One With West Mesa HC Manny Otero

Taking a few minutes to introduce his team and who he is, Manny Otero head coach of the West Mesa Mustangs goes one-on-one with Grine. This is an awesome update, he not only talked about his team but showed respect for other teams and players in his district.

More: One-on-One with La Cueva HC Steve Archibeque

Grine: Introduce who you are to NMPreps.com Nation?
Manny Otero: I'm Manny Otero and this is my 7th year at West Mesa. I have coached boys basketball in the past and I'm currently the Head Volleyball Coach (1st yr) and Head Girls Basketball Coach (2nd yr).

Grine: How many players did you return?
MO: 7 girls returned from last season.

Grine: What are some of your teams goals this season?
MO: One of our team goals is to finish with a winning record.

Grine: Things look to be going very well, let us in on your season.
MO: Our season is going well. We returned 7 players from last years team and their experience and leadership has helped tremendously. We are currently 5-6 and 2-0 in district.

Grine: You guys look like favorites or current leaders, how do you see you guys doing in the race?
MO: There are several good teams in our district and every team competes. There is not a clear cut favorite and that's what makes this district so exciting. I feel each team likes their chances at this point, being so early in district play.

Grine: We (at NMPreps.com) have Albuquerque High as the favorite, you played them well, is it between you to as the favorites?
MO: Like I mentioned before I feel each team has a legitimate opportunity at the District Championship. Albuquerque High is a tough team with solid players (Marisa Rivas, Libero Savannah Perez, and great hitters in Zavela, Baty, and Harris). We split with AHS in the Metro Tournament in Pool Play 1-1. Both AHS and WMHS split with Cibloa and we had a 3 way tie for 1st between Cibola, AHS and WMHS. This was early in the year, we have to take it game by game and focus about the current game rather than the district final outcomes.

Grine: Should your district send two teams to the state tournament?
MO: Its really going to be tough making the top 12 this year. There is probably going to be 5 or 6 teams on the bubble fighting for the final 2 spots. You can make an argument for each team, but I do feel it is possible for 2 teams to be accepted to the state tournament from our district.

Grine: What has contributed to your teams solid season so far?
MO: We have great senior leadership and with plenty of Varsity experience. Our team is really fun to be around and I enjoy coaching them. We have kids with great attitudes, they word hard, and are gaining confidence with each game.

History:
West Mesa Volleyball was once the most dominate program in New Mexico History. Over a 14 year span they won 7 State Championships and 3 State Runner-ups Including 4 state consecutive Titles from 1989-1992 under Coach Charlie Guess. During this span they accumulated a remarkable 132-0. This still is a National High School Record. Many Awesome players have came through the West Mesa and had successful college careers. Their commitment, dedication and teamwork inspires are current players to continue to work hard to bring back that West Mesa Mustang volleyball tradition.
