Henderson: What's On Tap In Week 8, Key Questions For U

Henderson: What's On Tap In Week 8

Atrisco Heritage and Valley play Thursday Night. Each team believe it or not is still in the playoff race. Atrisco is 1-0 in district, Valley 0-1. Who wins District 5-6A in your opinion?

Rio Rancho hosts Volcano Vista in one of the biggest district games so far of the season. Not only is district placement on the line, but so is playoff seeding. What are differences between these two teams this season?

Centennial aka the No. 1 in Class 5A makes the short travel trip to take on Chaparral who is quite the surprise at 5-1 and 1-0 in district after a 38-20 win over Valencia. Anyone think Chaparral keeps it close? Mark Aguilar's name should be mentioned in Coach of the Year. When was the last time that Chaparral beat Gadsden???

Clayton heads to Estancia this weekend. The Yellowjackets nearly upset Robertson last week, can they keep up with Estancia? It's a rematch of the 2014 state title game. Is there anyone in 3A that can handle Estancia this year?

Del Norte @ Espanola is a game I am actually thinking of attending. I can't believe I am even saying that. In my heart I feel Del Norte wins this game, but Espanola has had two weeks to prepare for the Knights and the Sundevils have a ton of momentum. If Espanola goes 10-0 where does the NMAA seed them? If Espanola loses to Del Norte and to Capital, finishing 8-2 will they miss the playoffs?

Deming and Onate play in a key district 3-6A game. Are both of these teams already out of playoff contention?

Gateway @ Melrose is pound for pound the best game on tap this weekend. The Warriors have scored 307 points and allowed just 46. Melrose is 7-0, riding a 15-game winning streak, the Buffs have scored 386 and allowed just 34 points. Who you got this weekend?

Manzano will try to make it three in a row this weekend against Highland. Currently the Monarchs are 4-3 and 1-0 in district with back to back wins over Mayfield and Sandia. Is Manzano already a playoff lock, can the Monarchs get in with a .500 record?

Silver and Hatch is a game that is really on the radar for me this weekend. Silver has played a very tough schedule and has won 4 in a row. Hatch is a perfect 7-0 and one of the best Hatch teams at least on paper since the early 2000's outscoring the comp 352-68. Who has seen both Hatch and Portales, how do they compare? Any chance Silver can pull off the upset?

St. Pius will try to get to 8-0 this weekend against a struggling Lovington team. I've seen St. Pius X in action and while I think their schedule has been as soft as quality TP, their skill position players and experience make them dangerous. Is St. Pius X a final four team, best St. Pius X team since 1999?

St. Mike's hosts NMMI on Saturday at one of my favorite venues in New Mexico. Bet you did not know that NMMI is 6-0 after beating Ruidoso 28-20. The Horsemen are 4-2 coming off a 53-18 win over Pojoaque. Thoughts on St. Michael's this year, who has seen NMMI play?

Pictured is Head Artesia Football Coach Cooper Henderson, the Bulldogs have won their last 18 of 20 football games.

Coach of the Week - Cooper Henderson, Artesia High School
The Artesia Bulldogs defeated the Alamogordo Tigers last weekend at the Bulldog Bowl 34-30 in what was considered one of the biggest high school football victories Friday Night. The Bulldogs playing without their starting quarterback for the second straight week were led by a great defensive effort and a sophomore at quarterback handed the Tiger's their first loss of the season. Cooper Henderson and the Artesia Bulldogs have now won their last 18 out of 20 games and continue to prove that they are not a one-man team, nor have they ever been.

Team of the Week - Manzano Monarchs
One of the hottest teams in Class 6A is the Manzano Monarchs who are now 4-3 on the season. Two weeks ago, the Monarchs defeated the Mayfield Trojans, last Saturday they were able to open district with an important 35-25 victory over Sandia. The Monarchs were led by Orland Perez at quarterback who threw for 100-yards, ran for 134-yards, and returned a kickoff 74-yards for a touchdown. Sophomore Jordan Byrd who holds an offer from New Mexico caught a touchdown and scored off a 47-yard touchdown run. Manzano is back in action this weekend against the Highland Hornets.

North Player of the Week - Dominic Montano, Escalante High School
The Escalante Lobos who have won their last 17 out of 18 games defeated the Ft. Sumner Foxes last Friday Night 42-25 moving to 6-1 on the season. Senior Quarterback Dominic Montano was 1-6 passing for 13-yards, but ran for an incredible 419-yards off 33 carries and scored 5 touchdowns. On the season Montano has thrown for 427-yards and rushed for 1,112-yards and 20 touchdowns.

Metro Area Player of the Week - Marcos Gonzales, West Mesa High School
West Mesa won a very important district game against Valley last Thursday Night defeating Valley 53-44. On the night it was Marcos Gonzales, a senior quarterback who reeled off one of the biggest dual threat performances of the season. Gonzales threw for 186-yards with 3 touchdowns, rushed for 176yards with 3 more touchdowns, and also returned an interception for a touchdown. On the season Gonzales has thrown for 721-yards and 9 touchdowns.

Southwest Player of the Week - Dante Lopez, Centennial High School
In a 56-19 win over Los Lunas, the Hawks moved to 6-0 on the season and 1-0 in district play. While there is a ton of key role players on Centennial, Dante Lopez a first year quarterback is having quite the year. Against the Tigers he was 9 for 10 passing for 150-yards and 5 touchdowns. On the season Lopez is 61-86-yards passing (71%) for 1,070-yards with 19 touchdowns and just 1 interception. The Hawks will take on 5-1 Chaparral in week 8.

Southeast Player of the Week - Cade Barnard, Melrose High School
6-foot-3, 200 pound Sophomore Cade Barnard is the next big time athlete out of Melrose. The 8-Man Football Power has produced numerous stat titles and is currently 7-0 this season heading into their marquee match up against undefeated Gateway Christian this Friday Night. During a 50-0 win against Springer, Barnard threw for 5 touchdowns, ran for 2 touchdowns, and had over 400-yards of total offense against the Red-Devils.

Feature: Week Eight Onate The Threat in 6A, Others Playing Musical Chairs

Week 8: Onate The Threat in 6A, Others Playing Musical Chairs
Joshua J. Grine of NMPreps.com

Week eight was a quiet one across the state of New Mexico with many schools going on fall break. Not many games but some played a significant roll in the rankings.

More teams started their district schedule, while a few others played outside their district schedule and others are making the trend up in their district placement. The bubble is alive and well in many classifications and we take a look at many of the headlines.

The excitement is a live and well in the state with the middle of the pack teams switching chairs each week.

Read Week 7 Rundown: Time To Re-Think

THE BIG FOUR FROM WEEK 8

3A Volleyball: No. 8 Texico over Melrose, 3-0.
The darlings of the state of New Mexico, No. 8 Texico Lady Wolverines (12-1, 0-0) are continuing their magical season with a convincing win over a solid Melrose (13-2, 2-0) team that is favorites to win the 2A title. No statics were submitted for the contest but Brianna Reyna (2016/OH) has been a name mentioned before for her success on the floor.

4A Volleyball: Portales over Artesia, 3-2. The minor upset last week is likely this contest as the Portales Rams (4-8, 0-0) who have had a bit of a disappointing campaign had a big win over then top-25 ranked Artesia (10-4, 0-0), 3-2. The win actually knocked the Lady Bulldogs out of the top-25. Portales also does not submit player of the games or statics.

5A Volleyball: No. 21 Piedra Vista over Miyamura, 3-0. Maybe, not the headline for "Big Four, but the No. 21 Piedra Vista Lady Panthers (11-4, 4-0) having been quietly moving in and up the rankings. This team has been consistently in the top of the class and should have a little more respect than they have been given this season. They pulled off their fourth straight win and looking to dominate the district going perfect through the first leg. Another team that does not submit statistics (grinejosh@yahoo.com).

6A Volleyball: No. 15 Sandia over No. 11 Eldorado, 3-1. Now to the "upset" of the week is the Sandia Matadors (8-5, 2-1) over the Eldorado Eagles (7-6, 1-2). Maybe to some this doesn't speak upset but the Matadors who have been all over the floor this season needed this win to help improve their seed for the state tournament which is less than a month away. Eldorado was led by Brigette Lowe (2016) with 14-kills, 3 blocks on the night. Sandia did not submit stats.

THE SPRINT: SONG TITLES - HOT TRACKS

Keeping the musical chairs theme going I pick some songs from the charts for this weeks Sprint. Feel free to add your thoughts on week eight. FYI, not songs I listen to just went off iTunes.

Love Me (The 1975). No. 25 West Las Vegas. The Lady Dons (11-1, 0-0) ran over Grants. They are ranked for the first time this season. Many thought it should have been sooner.

Hold Up, Wait a Minute (ZHU x Bone Thugs). Hobbs Eagles (6-10, 2-0). Unranked, but the Lady Eagles are surging late in the season and have taken the first place holder in District 4-6A with wins over Carlsbad (3-2) and Clovis (3-1) during week eight.

Confident (Demi Lovato). No. 6 Volcano Vista (10-4, 4-0). The Lady Hawks went 2-0 last week with wins over Cleveland (3-1) and Santa Fe (3-0). This team is on fire as of late and Lyric Ellison is exploding, potentially becoming a favorite for the 2015 NMPreps.com Miss Volleyball. Ellison had 29-kills in the two games.

Cake By The Ocean (DNCE). No. 3 Sandia Prep Lady Sundevils (13-0, 2-0). The reason for the comparison to this song title is that the Sandia Prep Sundevils will not lose a game this season, yes I just made that bold pick. They ran over Bosque and they will finish the final four games with ease.

TEAM OF THE WEEK: No. 5 Onate Knights (10-5, 3-0)

Okay the Knights didn't have the WOW factor wins this past week but the love is long overdue for this team that continues to win games each week. They went 2-0 this past week, getting wins over Deming (3-0) and Gadsden (3-0).

Alexa Benda (2017) has been a name to know with an impressive showing of 176 kills, 30-aces and 77 digs on the season.

The Lady Knights are the unheard of team this preseason from unranked to ranked. Also, looking closer at the Lady Knights they haven't lost a game to a New Mexico high school team. They are 8-0 vs New Mexico and riding an 8-game win streak. They have Top-10 win over Los Lunas, Volcano Vista and Las Cruces. The resume is
impressive.

Week 7 Questions To Get Upset About

Week 7 Questions To Get Upset About (title, I'm just kidding around - haha)

1. What would it mean if Mayfield was to miss the playoffs for the first time in 15-years?
2. What would it mean if the City of Rio Rancho brings home back to back big school titles?
3. What would it mean if Alamogordo runs the table in district?
4. What would it mean if Roswell beats Goddard (when was the last time? Anyone know?)
5. Would this mean the end is near? Espanola going 10-0 and Lovington missing the playoffs?

Bonus

You're stranded on an Island with Clovis Head Football Coach Eric Roanhaus.
