Apologies to the refs and fans at the RR - Atrisco Heritage Game

As a RR parent and fan, I wanted to apologize to the refs and to the AH players and fans from yesterday's game. When we initially saw the play live, all us were livid at the no call. In looking at the pic from the Albuquerque Journal article, you can see that it was a clean hit.

http://www.abqjournal.com/653918/sp...-wins-game-but-loses-coach-for-next-week.html

There were plenty of other bad calls but this one really got everyone fired up on our side.

Updated on Clovis RB Micah Gray

Last Friday Night Clovis Running Back Micah Gray was carried off the field in a stretcher during the 1st half of the Clovis vs. Frenship football game.

Both teams met in prayer on the 20-yards after Gray and a Frenship defensive player hit helmet to helmet and Gray lay on the field motionless for more than 10 minutes.

"It was kind of a fluke thing. Was in no way malicious or targeting. It kind of just happened," said Mitch Gray, the father of Micah. "He has no fracturing of the spine, nor any spinal chord damage. He has two aggravated discs that are slightly swollen, but doesn't seem like any long term damage. Doctors expect him to make a complete recovery. The amount of concern and love we have been shown has been mind-blowing, so again thank you to everyone."

Only a junior Gary leads the Wildcats in rushing with 937-yards of 133-yards and 12 touchdowns. The Wildacts are coming off a 29-21 loss to Frenship and will host the Grants Pirates in week 7. We hear Micah should be able to return by district play.

Hard to Believe: Espanola first team to reach 6-0 in Class 5A

Friday Night Espanola Valley defeated Taos 60-16 moving to 6-0, yes they are the first team in Class 5A to reach the 6-0 mark (Centennial was off this week, Artesia lost to Las Cruces).

“People can say all they want about us not playing anybody, that our schedule is weak,” Espanola Valley Coach Miguel Medina said. “The thing they don’t see is these are the same teams we were losing to time after time. Now we’re not just beating them, but we’re scoring points and winning games like this.” - This quote was published by the Santa Fe, New Mexican This morning - Read the full story on their win over Taos Here.

The Sundevils have never reached the 6-0 mark in school history. On the season they have outscored the competition 272-52.

Weeks 1-6

W - EP Cathedral 20-14 (EP Cathedral is 2-4 this year)
W - West Las Vegas 50-0 (West LV is 2-4 this year)
W - Pojoaque 54-0 (Pojoaque is 0-6 this year)
W - Wingate 52-0 (Wingate is 2-4 this year)
W - Gallup 42-22 (Gallup is 2-4 this year)
W - Taos 60-16 (Taos is 2-4 this year)

Next Up

Oct. 16th - Del Norte (2-4 this year)
Oct. 23rd - @ Los Alamos (2-4 this year)
Oct. 30th - Capital (4-2 this year)
Nov. 6th - Bernalillo (0-6 this year)

Playoff chances

Right now every team in District 2-5A is 0-0. The District Champion gets an automatic bid into the 12-team tournament. Record does not have everything to do with punching a playoff ticket, there are several factors including strength of schedule, how many district champs you beat, etc.

What are your thoughts on Espanola?

Playoff Criteria??

Just a few questions/considerations for playoff criteria. These are questions that are out there and will be asked. I think some are legitimate, some are interesting and some are crazy.

Should teams from the same district not have to play each other in the first round?
Should teams in that play in the regular season not play in the first round? (nearly impossible to seed?)
Should there be as much emphasis on beating a district champion that there is?
Should there be a committee with coaches/A.D. that seed with supervision from the NMAA?
What really needs to happen with seeding IF ANYTHING?

Hendo is the man!

I just wanted to say thanks to Kyle for making NMPreps such a great site and resource for high school sports. I look forward to logging on each day and seeing what's happening. Also, thanks to all the other contributors like Grine and all the members. It all comes together to make a great site. There are posters that annoy us, some that enlighten us, some that make us laugh, and some that make us think. I appreciate you all for making my days more enjoyable and entertaining. It's definitely money well spent.

Thank You From Rattler Nation

On behalf of Tucumcari Public Schools and the Tucumcari Football Team, I would like to take this opportunity to persoanlly thank everyone for the outpouring of sympathy and well wishes we received over the last week. I would like to especially thank Kyle and nmpreps, the city of Eunice, Jal, Mescalero and Clayton for their support and showing what human compassion is by going above and beyond to help us heal and celebrate the life of Patrick Gonzales. The football community in New Mexico is great and let no one ever tell anyone anything different. Passing along information on the services; there will be a rosary at 6pm on Friday at St. Annes Catholic Church in Tucumcari and the funeral will be held on Saturday at 10am and will be held at Rattler Gym.

What to Watch: Fighting For a Playoff Spot

TOP HALF OF THE WEEK - 6 THINGS

TOP 3 GAMES - PLAYOFF HOPES

No. 1 La Cueva @ Manzano:
Maybe, Manzano (7-4) is not on the level of the Lady Bears (12-0) but during district play you have two teams above .500. This could be an intriguing one to watch on the fact that the Lady Monarchs are fighting for the post season.

No. 12 Cleveland @ No. 6 Volcano Vista: Cleveland (6-7) started the 2015 campaign slow but have since kicked it into high gear with a Top-10 win over Roswell last week. Volcano Vista (8-4) has the very talented Lyric Ellison on the roster and with an upset last week to Cibola, then ranked 2 in the state, has them going hot into district play. Cleveland though ranked 12th in the state are somewhat fighting for a playoff spot still.

No. 4 Centennial @ Valencia: Centennial (10-2) is one of the most dominate teams in the state and had a setback last week in the loss to district foe Los Lunas. Valencia (6-5) started the district slate in playoff-team fashion and looking to be the upset team fighting for a playoff spot.

THREE PLAYERS TO WATCH - NEW NAMES

Peyton Linthicum, Valencia: Not a name that has been mentioned much but with 145 kills, 115 digs and 116 serving received success on the season, Linthicum has been holding her own.

Kayla Espinoza, Santa Teresa: Another player not mentioned much, if mentioned, this season but has been silently doing her thing for the (9-3) Desert Warriors. She has 113 digs on the season.

Nikole Bouma, Manzano: The final name of new players to know is Bouma who has been solid all season long. She currently leads the squad with 112 kills and 19 aces this season.

Week 7: Time To Rethink What We Thought. Player of the Week Announced (Updated: 10.6.15)

Week 7: Time To Rethink What We Thought
Joshua J. Grine of NMPreps.com

Well, it's one of those things when you thought you knew the answers for the test on Friday but a pop quiz was given on Tuesday.

The first week of district play not only lived up to the hype of district play but it shakes up the rankings across each classification. Several Top-10 teams (NMPreps.com Top-25 Team Rankings) lost, the number one team in 5A (NMPreps.com Top-12 Classification Rankings) lost and two teams stand unbeaten, big school division (6A-4A).

There was a time a few weeks back, when we were certain we had favorites to either win it all or at the very least who would play in the semi-final games for each class. Maybe, the race is a bit closer than expected.

THE THREE BIG SHOCKERS

Note: Rankings discussed are week-7 rankings. New Rankings for Week 8 will be released later this evening.

Warm-It-Up: No. 11 (6A) Las Cruces upsets No. 3 (6A) Mayfield. It's hard to read to much into this story because rivalry games are a different bread. However, this big win by the Lady Bulldawgs will only help after their recent dip in the rankings. Junior Celeste Cox, week one player of the week, led the way for the Lady Bulldawgs with 11-kills and 5-blocks.

A Bit Hotter: No. 2 (5A) St. Pius X over No. 2 (6A) Cibola. The Lady Sartans have only dropped a pair of games this season and sit at (9-2) on the season. Juliana Zamora (2017) has 75-kills on the season for the Sartans, Emily Buford (2016) has 24-blocks and Kayla Griego (2017) with 47-digs.

H-O-T, HOT: No. 9 (5A) Los Lunas takes out No. 1 (5A) Centennial. The Los Lunas Lady Tigers did what we would have considered the unthinkable taking out the top team in 5A, some would have argued the entire state, in the Centennial Lady Hawks. The Lady Tigers were led by Week Seven Player of the Week Nominee Jordan Holland who had 14-kills and 6-blocks in the win.

TIME TO RETHINK: TOP FOUR SEEDS

1-Seeds in 6A: La Cueva, Onate, Volcano Vista, Cibola: Okay, of the four teams list one team is here for the first time and could be one to stay. Guess who? Yes, you probably noticed that Onate is one of the four now after taking out Las Cruces and moving to 7-5 on the season. Cibola after going 0-2 last week? Well, unlike our weekly progression rankings, seeds should look at the totally body of work and our next two teams would be Eldorado and maybe Sandia. Both don't have the resume. For now Cibola is safe.
Last Week in 6A we had: La Cueva, Cibola, Mayfield and Eldorado.

1-Seeds in 5A: St. Pius X, Centennial, Los Lunas, Roswell: A bit of a reaction jumping Los Lunas back into the top four mix after being ranked 9th last week, Grine? Yes, because like discussed I think Los Lunas was maybe a bit of a "bad rank" on our part. They were too good to be ninth and twenty second in the state. Centennial, with the loss is still a top four seed, Roswel is still doing work at 11-2 and St. Pius X is storming with a big win over Cibola.
Last Week in 5A we had: Centennial, St. Pius X, Roswell and Albuquerque Academy.

1-Seeds in 4A: Sandia Prep, Silver, West Las Vegas, Wingate. Okay, before you immediately hit the reply button with Wingate is not a top four seed or "they haven't played anyone" or they got beat easily by St. Mike's. Yes, but just say they run the table and enter the conversation of top four seeds with 1-loss on the season. For now, for argument sake, let's throw them at No. 4 on the seeds.
Last Week in 4A we had: We Didn't, we'll show more love to 4A now that we are getting information ready.

THE SPRINT: ONE LINER

Team you should know by now:
Artesia beat Carlsbad 3-0 on Tuesday, maybe a dark horse.
Team That Deserves More Attention: West Las Vegas ran over Hatch Valley on Saturday 3-0 and as mentioned above could be a top four seed.
Team That Could be Hitting It's Stride: Ruidoso beat Portales (3-0) to shake off maybe a disappointing start to their defending the 4A title season.
Feeling Good After Week 7: Los Lunas not only beat the top team in Centennial but beat Santa Teresa (3-0) another top team in 5A volleyball this season.
Maybe more to this story and a weather alert: The Storm of Cleveland beat Santa Fe 3-0 on Friday in what could be the dark horse of 6A state tournament.
All We Do Is Win: Sandia Prep beat Ruidoso on Friday, 3-0 (Yes, we mentioned a stride above but still). The Lady Sundevils might be the unstoppable team of the year outside of La Cueva.

Week 8: Who Are Your 12 Playoff Teams? (Updated: 10/6/15)

TOURNAMENT IS GETTING CLOSE

Today, on NMPreps.com we continue our weekly view of the 12-teams that will make up the state tournament. Teams are locks and have made it clear they will receive a bid to the state tournament while a select few are fighting for the chance.

6A

"THE AUTOMATICS"

This group belongs to those who have earned the right into the state tournament by winning their district. Yes, some districts are down but we still reward you for winning your region and I'm still in favor of this tradition.

D1-6A: Volcano Vista (8-4, 2-0). The win over Cibola was huge and put them in the drivers seat.
D 2-6A: La Cueva (12-0, 2-0). Not much more to put here, other than they are the favorite.
D 3-6A: Onate (8-5, 1-0). Last week we had them as an at-large bid. They beat Cruces and look like the leaders at the moment.
D 4-6A: Alamogordo (4-9, 0-0). This district kicks-off this week but the Cruces win helps this resume, even with 4-wins.
D 5-6A: West Mesa (5-6, 2-0). Had Albuquerque High here but closer look and we like the Lady Mustangs play as of late.

"THE AT-LARGE"

This group could get tricky, and arguments could (we wish they would) be given for others over teams that we have listed.

Cibola (8-3, 0-1). You can never count out a defending champion and one with a D-1 player.
Eldorado (6-5, 0-1). Hail from District 2-6A, have a "bad" loss to a 2A program but still a solid team.
Sandia (6-5, 1-1). Will mix it up with Eldorado and La Cueva. Hard not to put this team in this group as all losses are "okay" losses. Nothing really hurts them.
Las Cruces (7-7, 1-1). Weird resume for a roller coaster team. Loss to Alamo hurts but a District runner-up from this district will help their case.

"BUBBLE IN - BOTTOM THREE"

Mayfield (10-5, 1-1). Hard to see them as a top-four seed a week ago to a bottom three in group. I can't see putting them above other teams in the next group at the moment.
Cleveland (6-7, 1-0). Doesn't help being under .500 but this team has been playing better as of late and on a 2-game win streak. Resume builders are wins over Roswell, Las Cruces and Sandia. Maybe should be in the group above over Las Cruces.
Gadsden (7-6, 1-0). They'll have a win over a DC (Alamo, Hobbs or Clovis) that could help this team over bubble out teams.

"BUBBLE OUT"

Albuquerque High (4-7, 1-0). Like district 4-6A, only one team is getting a bid. West Mesa has it right now.
Valley (5-7, 1-1). Insert line from above. Maybe a season away?
Santa Fe (7-6, 1-1). Strange as it may sound but I was about to put Santa Fe High above Albuquerque High and Valley. Well, maybe not to strange but need to tie with the third place team in this district and right now that is either Cleveland or Cibola.

HOW WE WOULD SEED THEM

#1. La Cueva
#2. Onate
#3. Volcano Vista
#4. Cibola
#5. Eldorado
#6. Las Cruces
#7. Sandia
#8. Cleveland
#9. Mayfield
#10. Gadsden
#11. West Mesa
#12. Gadsden

HOW THE POOLS WOULD SHAPE UP

Group-A
La Cueva, Cleveland, Gadsden

Group-B
Onate, Sandia, West Mesa

Group-C
Volcano Vista, Las Cruces, Gadsden

Group-D
Cibola, Eldorado, Mayfield

Coach - Miguel Medina, Espanola Sundevils
For the first time in school history, the Espanola Valley Sundevils are 6-0 and newly ranked in the NMPreps.com Top 25 at No. 25 after a 60-16 win over Taos. The Sundevils racked up 633-yards of offense against the Tigers, 573 of those yards came from their ground attack. The Sundevils are open this week, then take on Del Norte as they open up district 2-5A play. A large reason to their success is the continued efforts of Head Coach Miguel Medina who is putting wins on the scoreboard and tons of fans in the seats.
