Lack of parity?

Although it feels like many teams have a real chance at the title every year, in fact only a few elite programs have made it all the way to the top. In the big school classification, four schools (Eldorado, La Cueva, Carlsbad and Rio Rancho) have combined to win every title since 1996.

The last time there was a big-school final game without one of these four schools: 1991, when Farmington beat Mayfield.

At the next classification (5A, formerly 4A), the big four have been Piedra Vista, Farmington, Academy and St. Pius. Those four have won 14 of the last 15 titles.

Record State Title Teams

Along what is one of the nation's most prolific energy corridors (Eunice to Hobbs to Lovington to Artesia), all of those neighboring towns share a bizarre situation where each town has a program with a prolific number of state championships. Celebrating Eunice...the Cardinals just won their 17th state baseball title. They also have the most prolific string of championships out of the money sports of football or basketball or baseball. From 1960 to 1975 Eunice won the state baseball title 13 out of those 16 seasons . They lost only in '61, '66 and '73. If the Cardinals had won in 1966 then they would have won 11 titles in a row.

Artesia has by far the most state titles with 28 in football. Lovington has the second most with 18 in football and of course Hobbs now has 17 basketball titles to go along with Eunice's 17 baseball titles. Those four programs along the energy corridor have a combined 80 state titles. In football, Artesia and Lovington both won state titles in the same year seven times. ('57, '68, '69, '87, '01, '04 and '10) In 1987 Artesia and Lovington actually shared that state title as neither team scored in the championship game! Anyway, congratulations to the Eunice Cardinals for their latest title along the energy corridor. And congratulations to the Hobbs basketball and the Artesia football programs as they are also the current state title holders to make all of this even more amazing.
