Although it feels like many teams have a real chance at the title every year, in fact only a few elite programs have made it all the way to the top. In the big school classification, four schools (Eldorado, La Cueva, Carlsbad and Rio Rancho) have combined to win every title since 1996.
The last time there was a big-school final game without one of these four schools: 1991, when Farmington beat Mayfield.
At the next classification (5A, formerly 4A), the big four have been Piedra Vista, Farmington, Academy and St. Pius. Those four have won 14 of the last 15 titles.
