Top 13 New Mexico Football Stadiums

Top 13 New Mexico Football Stadiums

NMPreps.com's list of the top New Mexico high school football stadiums. The discussion is up for debate but the number one slot will be unmatched each year.

1) Bulldog Bowl (Artesia High School)

Site: Artesia, NM
Year Opened: 1967
Capacity: 6,500

Skinny: The Artesia High School football stadium is one to see, if you can play in the Bulldog Bowl it's an experience that you'll never forget.

2) Watson Memorial Stadium (Hobbs High School)

Site: Hobbs, NM
Year Opened: Unknown
Capacity: 15,000

Skinny: A monster of a stadium. When you drive up to Hobbs you are greeted by Ralph Tasker stadium and Watson Stadium.

3) Ruidoso Warrior Stadium (Ruidoso High School)

Site: Ruidoso, NM
Year Opened: --
Capacity: 1,700

Skinny: When they built Ruidoso Stadium, they picked the perfect location. The mountains and trees overlooking the stadium is a site to see. Ruidoso has been a place for college football teams to hold training camp (UTEP, UNM).

4) Lighting Stadium (Cleveland High School)

Site: Rio Rancho, NM
Year Opened: 2011
Capacity: 5,620

Skinny: The view from the home side is a beauty with the Sandia Mountains facing you. Love how the field house/weight room overlooks the stadium.

5) Leon Williams Stadium (Clovis High School)

Site: Clovis, NM
Year Opened: 1970
Capacity: 8,000

Skinny: "It was one of the best experiences since I've coached here, was going to play at Leon Williams."

6) The Wool Bowl (Roswell/Goddard High school)

Site: Roswell, NM
Year Opened: 1968
Capacity: 6,000

Skinny: You can't list the best place to play without putting The Wool Bowl on it. Plenty of State Championships surround the place.

7) Tiger Stadium (Alamogordo High School)

Site: Alamogordo, NM
Year Opened: --
Capacity: 5,667

Skinny: The Tigers have put money into creating a great facility and stadium. The overlook of the mountains is a great feature too.

8) Bear Stadium (Cloudcroft High School)

Site: Cloudcroft, NM
Year Opened: --
Capacity: 612

Skinny: One of the smaller stadiums on the list but like others the outside ambience of mountain trees solidify it on the list.

9) Hutchinson Stadium (Farmington/Piedra Vista High School)

Site: Farmington, NM
Year Opened: --
Capacity: 5,300

Skinny: A fan favorite to many that have either coached or called a game here. Historic feel to it.

10) Lovington Stadium (Lovington High School

Site: Lovington, NM
Year Opened: 1940
Capacity: 5,000

Skinny: Two things that you have to take into consideration with Lovington (and Hobbs) is the indoor facility connected to the stadium. Also, the blue turf makes the appeal of this 5,000 seat stadium one to see.

11) Belen Eagles Stadium (Belen High School)

Site: Belen, NM
Year Opened: --
Capacity: 2,800

Skinny: They put in new turf this summer and only adds to why this is one of my personal favorites. I love how the athletic building overlooks the stadium.

12) Rio Rancho Ram Stadium (Rio Rancho High School)

Site: Rio Rancho, NM
Year Opened: 1998 (?)
Capacity: 6,000

Skinny: Sort of a bowl feel to it. Very nice facility that was built for football.

13) Ivan Head Stadium (Santa Fe High School)

Site: Santa Fe, NM
Year Opened: --
Capacity: 6,000

Skinny: Similar to how Rio Rancho sits inside a bowl. Ivan Head stadium definitely has a great feel to it and without the track puts you right up to the playing field.

Oct. 19th - at Manzano - Underdog
Oct. 27th - at Los Alamos - Underdog

2022 Record: 0-10 overall, 0-3 district

Best Case Scenario: 1-9 overall. The Knights have been on a continued downfall only winning 1 game over the last two seasons (1-18 overall). Last season the Knights were outscored 498 (PA) to 100 (PF). The Knights did double digits in scoring in three games last season -- Rio Grande (22-20 OT), Manzano (55-26), and Bernalillo (60-22) -- and 'only' had two shutout losses (Deming, Highland). They are still years away from getting back to the .500 range but they'll look to be more competitive this season.

Worst Case Scenario: 0-10 overall. Back-to-back winless records could really be detrimental for any hope of building the program back. Back-to-back winless seasons could also be the reality. In a numbers game, the Knights struggle in getting participation numbers up. The Rio Grande game is critical for the Knights season.

September 29th - at Eldorado* - Favorite
October 14th - vs West Mesa* - Favorite
October 20th - vs Sandia* - Favorite
October 27th - at Farmington* - Favorite

2022 Record: 11-2 overall, 4-0 district

Best Case Scenario: 10-0 overall. The Bears are back, back to being a power of the 2000's. They are favored or in a coin flip in each of their ten games this season. Cleveland and Centennial are the true coin flip games. They split these games last season. Rio Rancho and Volcano Vista are FAV/CF level games but should be favored by a touchdown in each. They should move along with ease in district play. They won by 20+ in each district game and averaged 68 points per game.

Worst Case Scenario: 6-4 overall. I don't think many will vote the worst case scenario but staying true to the feature, if the Bears fall in each of their CF games they could start the season 1-4 before starting district play. Things to consider are replacing Armenta at QB from last season, Buie at RB, and Sanchez at WR -- all three were at the top of their position in player rankings last season.

Albuquerque Regional Sports Complex

First time that this many baseball playoff games will be held at one site. Positives: it's fun to have multiple games going on at the same time at the same site, across all classes. The fields are nice and the facility overall is fan-friendly (concessions, restrooms, etc.). Negatives: limited parking and seating. None of the fields have enough seating for a state tournament game, unless its an A, 2A or 3A game with teams from outside the metro. Games like La Cueva-Sandia won't have nearly enough room.

As far as game play goes, make sure your outfielders get a good night's sleep -- the fields are big, and the ball shoots off the turf into the alleys. You won't see a lot of home runs, but plenty of doubles and triples, especially if it's windy.

Player Rankings 2023 Position Breakdowns: Running Backs

NMPREPS POSITION BREAKDOWNS

NMPreps annual New Mexico high school football player rankings. Today, we look at the top running backs for the 2023 season. #nmpreps

2024

Alijah Gonzales, Volcano Vista High School (Albuquerque, NM)

Scoop: Gonzales rushed for 690 yards on 118 carries last season for the Hawks. Volcano Vista reached the semifinals last season and behind Gonzales will look to return. He also finished with 12 touchdowns last season.

Kash Roberts, Clovis High School (Clovis, NM)

Scoop: Roberts has the potential to be a top level running back and waiting to see the potential play out. Roberts rushed for 735 yards and 6 touchdowns last season for the Wildcats. The 6'0'' two-way player is talented on both sides of the ball.

Santiago Chavez, Moriarty High School (Moriarty, NM)

Scoop: Chavez is one of the more known RBs in 4A football this season. The 5-10 back rushed for 962 yards last season as a junior helping the team to an 8-4 record. In the final two games of the season Chavez went for over 100 yards bring the total to five games.

Josh Calhoon, Estancia High School (Estancia, NM)

Scoop: Calhoon led the 2024 class last season with 1,360 rushing yards. Calhoon added 11 touchdowns and averaged 6.7 yards per carry. The Bears finished 6-5 last season.

====

2025

Jesse James Gonzalez, Robertson High School (Las Vegas, NM)

Scoop: After racking up 1,546 yards over two seasons at Robertson, Gonzalez is arguably the top running back prospect in 3A football next season. The 2025 RB also has a career total 15 touchdowns, 8 of those coming last season in ten games for the Cardinals.

John Paul Ludi, Eldorado High School (Albuquerque, NM)

Scoop: The Eagles went into rebuild mode last season and searching for the next wave of talent to carry them forward. Ludi showed promise last season and showed significant improvement that included more carries (127). Ludi rushed for 424-yards (3.3 average per carry) and 2 touchdowns.

Best/Worst Case Scenario: Atrisco Heritage Jaguars

10/13 - at Cleveland* - Underdog
10/28 - vs Volcano Vista* - Underdog

2022 Record: 5-6 overall, 0-4 district

Best Case Scenario: 7-3 overall. This could perhaps be the best Atrisco Heritage football team of all time. Starting QB, RB, and WR all return and each regarded as top players entering the 2023 season. Quick review, the Jaguars beat Rio Grande, Eldorado, Manzano, West Mesa, and Capital last season. Those five gams are either favorite or coin flip again this year. Sandia and Cibola are in that range heading into this season having them reach 7 wins. They made the playoffs last season and 7 games would certainly have them reach it again in 2023. They are also riding a 9-game losing streak in district play, beating Cibola would snap that losing streak (last district win was 2019 vs West Mesa, 25-6).

Worst Case Scenario: 3-7 overall. Three true favorite games include Rio Grande, Manzano, and Capital. All three should be improved but the Jaguars beat the three by an average of 43 points -- shutting out Rio Grande (52-0) and Manzano (53-0). Sandia, Eldorado, and Cibola are the Fav/CF games that will each be a battle. West Mesa-Atrisco could again become a bubble game for the state at-large bid. Atrisco won 59-54 last season, this season we have it as a true CF game.

Best/Worst Case Scenario

NMPreps first look at each schedule leading up to the 2023 season. We give our best predictions and potential overall records. Schedules are submitted here.

2023 SCHEDULE
Aug. 18 West Mesa - Underdog
Aug. 25 at Roswell - Underdog
Sept. 1 St. Michael's - Underdog
Sept. 8 at Silver City - Underdog/CF
Sept. 15 Manzano - Favorite/CF
Sept. 29 at Lovington - Underdog
Oct. 6 Clovis - Underdog
Oct. 13 at Los Lunas - Underdog
Oct. 20 ABQ High - Underdog
Oct. 27 at Capital - Underdog

2022 Record: 1-9 overall, 0-4 district

Best Case Scenario: 2-8 overall. The Demons have a combination of missing the talent from the 2021 team and a difficult schedule. The non-district slate of games will feature teams four teams inside the top-40 in New Mexico high school football. Roswell and St. Michael's are likely to contend for a state championship again. Silver played in the 4A title game last season. Silver does lose a solid group and could be a game they steal on the road. Manzano was the lone win and could be again this season.

Worst Case Scenario: 0-10 overall. Sticking true to the feature and game as a CF or underdog we count as a loss. We'd like to say that the Manzano game is a true favorite but was split among the team on giving them above a 75% chance of winning. This is the preseason though and that number could change before September 15th.

Best/Worst Case Scenario: Eldorado Eagles

NMPreps New Mexico high school football schedule breakdown. The NMPreps team weighs in on every schedule and gives the best/worst case scenario for the 2023 season. #nmpreps

2023 Schedule
8/18 - at Cibola (Community) - Favorite/CF
8/25 - at Rio Rancho - Underdog
8/31 - at Atrisco Heritage - Underdog
9/8 - vs Piedra Vista - Favorite/CF
9/16 - vs Clovis - Coin Flip

9/29 - vs La Cueva - Underdog
10/6 - at Sandia - Underdog/CF
10/21 - vs Farmington - Favorite/CF
10/27 - at West Mesa - Underdog

2022 Record: 2-8 overall, 1-3 district

Best Case Scenario: 5-5 overall. Five wins would be a significant jump for the Eldorado Eagles. The schedule enters year two of the block and they'll look to make progress this season. The Eagles started the 2022 season 0-4 and did not earn their first win until week 6 against Clovis -- a 1-point win. We enter this season with them being a favorite/Coin Flip over Cibola and Piedra Vista, two teams that beat the Eagles easily in 2022. Both will be replacing key players though and/or we have vastly underrated both (more to come with our 92 team countdown). The other wins would be over Clovis, coin flip this year, and Farmington, another coin flip but considered as a UND/CF level. They do not have a true favorite game on their schedule a first for us on our features of BC/WC.

Worst Case Scenario: 0-10 overall. This, another first, would have the Eagles at 0-10 on the season. Again, we would have to stick true to the feature and any game considered a Coin Flip or Underdog is counted as a loss. The Eagles have a well balanced schedule but they do need to start making progress back to the .500 level. They did go 7-4 in 2021 but had to do some developing and filling holes in 2022. They have pieces to like next season and could be the surprise underdog team of 6A football.

10/6 - at Centennial* - UND
10/13 - vs Alamogordo* - FAV
10/20 - at Organ Mountain* - FAV
10/27 - vs Carlsbad* - FAV

2022 Record: 9-2 overall, 4-1 in district (0-1 playoffs)

Best Case Scenario: 9-1 overall. The Eagles were the 2022 surprise team finishing 9-1 in the regular season. Can they do it again? The task will be great after graduating a core of that explosive offense from last season. Sticking true to the feature though, we have the Eagles favored or in a coin flip in nine out of ten games. The lone loss last season was Centennial and we again have them as an underdog in that game.

Worst Case Scenario: 5-5 overall. The Eagles are true favorites in five out of ten games. Clovis, Lovington, Alamogordo, Organ Mountain, and Carlsbad provide them the favored games. This would also put them at 4-1 in district again and most likely earning an at-large bid to state. Getting above .500 in this scenario would need a win over one of the CF games -- Artesia (away), Roswell (home), Rio Rancho (away) or Las Cruces (home). The only game they enter the season as a UND/CF is Rio Rancho on the road mid-September.

10/20 - vs Santa Teresa* - CF
10/27 - vs Deming* - UND

2022 Record: 5-7 overall, 2-1 district

Best Case Scenario: 6-4 overall. The Panthers are returning off a highly successful season that featured a playoff win. The Panthers went 4-6 during the regular season and return as favorites against Clint, TX and Chaparral, both teams they beat in '22. Santa Teresa and Valencia were the other two wins, both are in the coin flip section to start this season. Two games that they'll look at swinging back to them are Ruidoso on opening night and El Paso, TX.

Worst Case Scenario: 2-8 overall. The Panthers open the season with two games as true favorites heading into the season. Clint, TX and Chaparral being the games. Chaparral is currently riding a 32-game losing streak dating back to October 12th, 2018 (W, Cathedral TX 32-14). Gadsden owns the current series 2-0 against Clint beating them in 2022 and 2021. Last season beating them 21-12 on the road.

Oct. 13th vs Atrisco Heritage - FAV
Oct. 20th vs Cibola - FAV
Oct. 27th at Rio Rancho - FAV/CF

2022 Record: 11-2 overall, 4-0 district

Best Case Scenario: 10-0 overall. The Storm, despite having to make a handful of key replacements, will be in position to run the table. This is the best case scenario. The Storm are either favored or in a coin flip situation. The key games will be hosting the Texas schools -- Amarillo and Fresnship -- along with playing opening night at Las Cruces-Centennial. Yes, they graduate plenty but the Storm have a reloading program.

Worst Case Scenario: 5-5 overall. The two ends of B/W are wide with a handful of CF games. Centennial, Amarillo (TX), Fresnship (TX), La Cueva, and Rio Rancho all fall into that category. They lost to Centennial and Frenship (TX) last season, those two were the two losses on the year for the defending state champions. The La Cueva matchups were historic including a 75-62 final in the state championship game. They beat Amarillo (TX) by 17 and Rio Rancho by 19 points but both could be a tight watch as the Storm make those replacements.
