Team Preview: Cleveland Storm

Cleveland Storm Overview

It’s obvious that this year’s Cleveland Storm team has giant potential. Of course saying it and doing it are two different things. Speaking with Head Coach Heath Ridenour on Tuesday, June 16th he knows just like everyone else that they have the horses to run the show, but they still haven’t won any games on their schedule. In-fact, Cleveland enters the 2015 season riding a two-game losing streak following an ugly 1st round playoff loss to district rival Cibola. I will say this: I strongly doubt there is a team in New Mexico that has better skill position players and linemen that this group. Their linemen remind me of Las Cruces’ 2012 team when the Dawgs had Rudy Guerra, Lane Cummings, Taylor Tisby, Jacob Banegas, and Oscar Guzman. This Cleveland Team has 3, maybe 4 D-1 prospects. Henry Hattis one of the best linemen in the west and Quarterback Gabe Ortega who was just offered by UNM. The other two are Marcus Williams a 6-foot-4 receiver and 6-foot-4 junior receiver Adam Cook.

Three Year Starter Gabe Ortega
1696613.gif

Gabe Ortega
shined throwing the football at last weekend’s New Mexico Lobo Football Camp and was offered by the Lobos shortly after. At 6-foot-2, and 190 pounds Ortega has tons of natural football instincts and is a proven gamer. His sophomore year he started all over the field returning kicks, catching passes, making plays on defense, even served as the field goal kicker. “He’s a good Christian man, does a good job in the classroom, and he’s a good football player. Ran a 4.5 at Kansas State a few weeks ago and has all the intangibles you want your quarterback to have. I think people are really starting to see in Gabe what we’ve known for a very long time,” said Cleveland Football Coach Heath Ridenour. Last year as a junior Ortega threw for 1,639-yards and 14 touchdowns and also ran for 729-yards and 7 touchdowns.

Offensive Skill Guys
1696598.png

Cleveland’s skill position players looked sharp today and three of their starters were not in attendance. Quarterback Gabe Ortega was at a Texas A&M Camp and Marcus Williams along with Adam Cook were at a Texas Tech Camp. Williams is a 6-foot-4, 200 pound receiver that caught for over 600-yards during his junior year and one that is getting attention from a few D-1 colleges. Cook started as a sophomore last year at Cleveland hauling in 507-yards and 3 touchdowns. Standing at 6-foot-4 and 210 pounds, Cook is one of the state’s top Class of 2017 prospects that is likely Cleveland’s next D-1 guy. Taking over at running back for Jesse Neito (1,200-yards last year) will be Landry Hays (Pictured), a 6-foot-1, 185 pound running back. We could also see Niko Papadopoulos a junior prospect get some reps. Two receivers that stood out today were 6-foot-5, 175 pound Justice Jackson who caught everything thrown his way and Ryan Anderson who is a multi purpose player with good varsity experience.

Henry Hattis Is One of the Best in the West
1696599.png

6-foot-7, 265 pound Henry Hattis is one of the top offensive linemen in the West. He’s ranked no. 45 overall at the position in the Nation by Rivals.com and currently has offers from Arizona, Arizona State, Missouri, New Mexico, New Mexico State, San Diego State, Texas Tech, UCLA, and Washington State. He’s visiting Stanford this weekend and also just returned from Oklahoma. Hattis is just massive and his athletic ceiling is sky high. I watched him throw a 30 pound medicine ball today nearly 25 feet in the air with ease, again, and again. “His maturity has really changed year over year. His ability to work in the weight room, knowing what’s important, to push himself on every lift, every drill, and when these college coaches come in to see him, they leave really impressed with that aspect,” said Ridenour in an earlier interview conducted back on May 21st, 2015. Watch interview with Henry Hattis Here

The Big Boys, likely the best in the State
1696600.jpg

“We are really proud of our linemen. they are really committed to the grind as they say, doing the right thing every single day. We are anchored by Nate Garcia our Center, left guard is Demtry Rodriguez a 300 pounder who has some nasty to him, big hang cleaner and big bench guy, at right guard is Santos Taylor at 6-foot-3, 285 pounds, at left tackle is 6-foot-7, 265 pound Henry Hattis, and at right tackle is Daimon Altamirano at 6-foot-4, 280 pounds, who is also our heavyweight wrestler here at Cleveland. The competition aspect for this group is big,” commented Ridenour on a seriously large group of offensive linemen.

Starting Offensive Linemen In the 1,000 Pound Club at Cleveland
Nate Garica - Center - 1,260, 300 pound hang clean
Demetry Rodriguez - Guard - 1,220, 315 pound hang clean
Santos Taylor - Guard - 1,195, 255 hang pound clean
Daimon Altamirano - Tackle - 1,085, 265 pound hang clean
Henry Hattis - Tackel - 1,135, 300 pound hang clean

New Defensive Names To Watch In 2015
1696601.jpg

Sean Davis
(pictured) is one to watch at nose guard, he hang cleaned 365 pounds during Cleveland’s 2015 Night of Champions. Last year as a junior he had 54 total tackles. Cleveland returns 5 starters on defense, a lot of the secondary. Ryan Anderson had 41 tackles and 3 interceptions, Marcus Williams will go both ways, and even quarterback Gabe Ortega will see time on defense at the safety position. 6-foot-4, 180 pound Roope Henry and Landry Hays at 6-foot-1, 190 return at the outside linebacker position. Brendon Amsted at 205 pounds returns, Hayden Wilson, and watch for Demetry Rodriguez, Henry Hattis, Daimon Altamirano could also go both ways depending on game situation. Cleveland is also working in three new defensive backs this year: Sean Nieto, Darren Gonzales, and Desmond Gutierrez who is their lock down corner.

Breaking It Down
This is my 10th season covering New Mexico High School Football and sometimes I get it right picking the preseason No. 1 and sometimes I don’t. I’m very confident that this year’s Cleveland Storm team is at the top of the 6A list and I’ve only been to two programs so far, that is the impression I left Cleveland with. They have talent, great talent at pretty much every position and its going to be difficult for anyone in New Mexico to deal with their size up-front. Let’s circle that week 2 game against El Paso Del Valle and their week 3 game against a hard hitting Onate. If this team gets hot and stays healthy, it’s going to be hard to prevent this team from achieving the ultimate goal come December. These programs from the City of Rio Rancho are really setting themselves apart from the pack.

Recruiting News New Mexico Lobos offer 2018 prospect

The New Mexico Lobos have offered Manzano Running Back Jordan Byrd. Bryd won the Class 6A 100M dash this past spring running an 11.0 flat. His best time this last year was a 10.6 I believe. New Mexico is recruiting Bryd as a receiver/running back. Bryd will be a sophomore at Manzano (Class of 2018) this coming year. It's been a while since the Lobos have offered a sophomore.

Henderson’s 10 thoughts from the weekend
Hendo’s Top 10

1. New Head Football Coaches In 2015

Gary Bradley - New Coach at Carlsbad

Feature Story: Carlsbad has hired their new head football coach to replace Ron Arrington. The hire comes from the Northwest corner of the State of New Mexico hiring Gary Bradley. Bradley the son of Jim Bradley Sr. (legendary former Mayfield Coach) has been the Head Coach at Farmington since the 2008 season.

Bradley took over during the 2008 season and posted a career record of 54-31 over the last 7 seasons including one 4A state championship during the 2013 season.

"In coaching, you develop strong relationships as part of the business. When my wife and I moved to Farmington from Las Cruces in 2008 it was very tough leaving family and now with us leaving Farmington to Carlsbad it's tough again to leave life long friends we've made.

We did not come to Farmington to use it as a stepping stone, we came here to live. Our family is 100% in this next phase and we're diving right into this new challenge," Said Bradley.

Bradley at Farmington
2014 7-6
2013 12-1 *4A State Champs
2012 7-5
2011 10-3
2010 9-3
2009 7-5
2008 2-8

Challenges ahead in Carlsbad?

The Carlsbad Cavemen went 2-8 during the 2014 season and just 6-5 during the 2013 season. The Cavemen have not been to a state football title game since 2000 (under Kirk Potter) and have not won a state football championship since 1962 under Ralph Bowyer.

"I've always had my eye on Carlsbad. It's a one-horse town, a small town and I've always liked Carlsbad form the Lake, River, and I love the fact that on Friday Night they close it down for Football. It's a sports town with a lot of athletes, great facilities, and great community support,"

The Cavemen return Jonah Leyva who saw playing time at quarterback as just a sophomore, but graduate big time names like Travis Kessler, Kaleb Stevens, Trevin Ramirez, and Elijah McCoy.

It will also be interesting to see if Bradley moves to Cavemen from a spread set to a option style offense which he ran as both the offensive coordinator while at Mayfield and as the Head Coach at Farmington.

The last time Carlsbad won the District was in 2010 going 2-0.

Mark it down

As mentioned Gary is the son of Jim Bradley Sr. and the brother to current Head Mayfield Football Coach Michael Bradley. "I talked to my brother Michael and he's excited for me. We play each other in week 3 along with a loaded schedule."

Additional New Coaches In 2015

Ken Stevens - New Coach at Eunice
The skinny: Ken Stevens has served as a long time assistant at Carlsbad. He takes over at Eunice replacing Caleb Aldrige who went 7-5 last year losing to Clayton in the 3A semifinals.

Collin Justiss - New Coach at Valencia
The skinny: Justiss went 23-2 over the last two-years as Clayton’s head coach, taking the Yellowjackets to back to back state championships. Justiss takes over for Kevin Jolley who finished 6-5 last year losing to Piedra Vista 44-21 in the first round of the 5A playoffs.

Jeff Dalton - New Coach at Farmington
The Skinny: Dalton served as the defensive coordinator at Farmington over the last few seasons. He takes over in Farmington replacing Gary Bradley. The Scorpions have reached the playoffs every year since 2009.

John Cabos - New Coach at Bernalillo
The Skinny: Cabos takes over for Trent Spencer. Bernalillo is just 5-15 over the last two-years.

Kevin Graham - New Coach at Dexter
The Skinny: Graham leaves his coaching position at Kirtland to take over for Frank Sandoval. Last year Dexter went 8-4. Graham went 5-6 last year at Kirtland losing to St. Michael’s 20-12 in the 4A playoffs.

Sam Mascarenas - New HC at Rio Grande
The Skinny: Sam Mascarenas is Rio Grande’s third coach since the 2009 season. The Ravens have not reached the playoffs since the 2006 season. Last year under Pat Quillen the Ravens went 1-9.

Mark Lopez - New Coach at Loving
The Skinny: Lopez takes over for Doug Santo who went 2-7 in 2014. The Falcons had to forfeit their 2013 season because of lack of players.

Dustin Tippit - New Coach at Clayton
The Skinny: Tippit has been an assistant under Justiss for two-seasons and will take over a program that has been straight rolling over the last two-years. The Yellowjackets are 23-2 over the past two seasons reaching the 3A state title game in 2014 and in 2013.

Ron Gallegos - New Coach at McCurdy
The Skinny: Taking over for Jorge Oropeza is Ron Gallegos. Galleogs is the third coach since 2012. The Bobcats went 2-8 in 2014.

Joshua Olsen - New Coach at Gallup
The Skinny: Gallup has won a total of 5 games in the last three years. Last year they went 0-10.

2. NMPreps.com Recruiting War Room Updates

Two prospects we have new updates on from this past weekend. 6-foot-2, 190 pound Quarterback Gabe Ortega at Cleveland was offered by the New Mexico Lobos over the weekend. His testing numbers read: 4.51 40-time and recorded a 33 inch vertical jump. Last year as a junior Ortega threw for 1,639-yards and 14 touchdowns. He also rushed for 729-yards and 7 touchdowns with 3 100-yard games. Ortega has the athleticism to play all over the field, but we are told the Lobos are recruiting him as a quarterback.

Isaiah Martinez is a 6-foot-2, 182 pound safety that has been offered by Adams State and Western Colorado. Martinez missed last year with an injury, but contributed on varsity as a sophomore where he was named All-Metro.

3. Lobo Camp Champs basketball and football

Football 7-on Tournament Champs: Cleveland beat St. Pius X

Basketball Tournament Champs: Hope beat Rio Rancho

4. All-Star baseball games

The 6A/5A All-Star three game series took place in Las Cruces over the weekend. Game three of the series ended in dramatic fashion: With the North up 10-7 in the bottom of the 7th, Onate’s Mike Salcedo hit a walk off grand slam to end it. South won game one 13-11, North won game two 9-2, and the South won game three 11-10.

The 3A/2A All-Star game also took place over the weekend in Bayard, New Mexico at Cobre High School. The South won game one 11-6, North won 11-7 off a walk off grand slam, we are still looking for the game three score.

5. NBA Finals - Golden State Leads 3-2

My goodness did Steph Curry hit some money shots in the 4th quarter. Curry finished the game 13-23 from the field and 7-13 from beyond the arch finishing with 37 points to lead Gold State past Cleveland 104-91. Golden State takes a 3-2 series lead over Cleveland, Game 6 is Tuesday tonight. Lebron James led the way for Cleveland finishing with 40 points (15-34), 14 records, 11 assists, in 44 minutes.

Review: Fun for all ages. Good mix of ok dialogue with some awesome dinosaur scenes. Best Jurassic movie since the first one way back when.

Grading
Story line: B+
Screen Play: B+
Effects/Visuals: A+

True story: Took our two-year daughter and 6-year old son (I was very nervous about the two-year old throwing her milk down 5-rows of seats, crying, etc.) but she did fantastic to my surprise. Also she was crying at the end of the movie because it ended.

I also watched San Andreas recently as well. It’s rare that I see two movies in theaters, but I enjoyed the Rock’s performance. It was mindless fun. Haha.

9. Music

Recently bought Zac Brown’s latest album: Jekyll & Hyde. Very good album. Just read that Zach Brown is coming to Albuquerque on 10/7/2015. Also I bought: Jim Croce’s “the hits”, the best of Lynyrd Skynyrd, and an Elvis Live concert. Also, was turned on to Amos Lee who I have been listening to.

10. 60/70’s party/Pool Party

I am pretty conservative person. However, when my wife asks me to do things like attend her social club’s 70’s party I’ll take the path of least resistance. Anyways, we attend a 60’s/70’s party (See pic) and it was in great fun, pretty funky, and our group won best dressed. Sunday concluded with a pool party for my son’s end of the year baseball awards banquet. This was our first year doing a team sport, and I’ve really enjoyed watching my son being coached. It’s an important part of sports, life, and the camaraderie the kids on the team build has been pleasing. As a father, at least for me sometimes its difficult to try new things with a family, but usually those experience are the ones that we remember.

June 15th Update
Two prospects we have new updates on from this past weekend. 6-foot-2, 190 pound Quarterback Gabe Ortega at Cleveland was offered by the New Mexico Lobos over the weekend. His testing numbers read: 4.51 40-time and recorded a 33 inch vertical jump. Last year as a junior Ortega threw for 1,639-yards and 14 touchdowns. Isaiah Martinez is a 6-foot-2, 182 pound safety that has been offered by Adams State and Western Colorado. Martinez missed last year with an injury, but contributed on varsity as a sophomore where he was named All-Metro.

June 12th Update

1695263.jpg

6-foot-1, 210 pound Eldorado Running Back Noah Sweitzer is a name to keep tabs on. The Class of 2016 prospect holds offers from Adam State University and Western State Colorado University. Last year Sweitzer had a standout junior season. As always, Eldorado is going to have some guys, Sweitzer is one of them.

*****
It's been a busy summer for Clovis Quarterback Daulton Hatley. The 6-foot-1, 185 pound quarterback who threw for 1,255-yards and 12 touchdowns as a junior has picked up two early offers. Schools which have offered him are: University of Central Oklahoma and Northwestern Oklahoma State University.
*****
Teammate of Hatley, Roland Chavez shined last week during the Eastern New Mexico/NMMI Camp which was held at Clovis High School. The 6-foot-4, 210 pound Tight End picked up offers from both schools after the event.

******
Cleveland High School sent 4 prospects to the Oklahoma Football Camp this past week: 6-foot-7, 265 pound Henry Hattis, 6-foot-4, 200 pound Marcus Williams, 6-foot-4, 210 pound Adam Cook, and 6-foot-2, 175 pound Gabe Ortega. Hattis one of the top offensive tackles in the West holds offers from Arizona, Arizona State, Missouri, New Mexico, New Mexico State, San Diego State, Tech Tech, UCLA, and Washington. Williams is one of the top receivers in New Mexico and we're told he's close to landing an in-state offer from New Mexico. Adam Cook is in the Class of 2017, however he caught for over 400-yards last year as a sophomore and has a lot of natural physicality that college coaches want in a prospect. Ortega will be a three year starter at Cleveland and a two-year starter at quarterback. His playmaking skills are what sets him apart. So far, only Hattis holds an offer out of the four mentioned.

*****
6-foot-6, 255 pound Grant Hermanns out of Rio Rancho (NM) has had a busy summer and recently just returned form the Oklahoma Football Camp and the Showtyme Elite Event in Dallas, Texas. Hermanns impressed at both events. From Rivals Mid-South Recruiting Analyst Jason Howell " Rio Rancho (N.M.) offensive tackle Grant Hermanns holds offers from Iowa State, Kansas, Nevada, New Mexico, New Mexico State, Northern Arizona, San Diego State, Texas Tech, and Washington State, and he was at the Dallas Showtyme Elite Camp hoping to turn a few heads with coaches from Michigan and USC in attendance. Next up for Hermanns is a trip to Oklahoma for the Sooners camp and he hopes to visit Texas A&M. He has already visited Florida and he continues to hear from the Gators, along with Oregon, Oklahoma, and Michigan. Even though Oregon, Oklahoma, and Florida have not offered, they are each high on his list. The schools showing the most interest right now are Texas Tech, Iowa State, and Oregon. He plans to make his decision in September and the big factor for him is going to be the coaching staff. Assistant coach Lee Hays and head coach Kliff Kingsbury of Texas Tech have already made a strong impression. Florida assistant Mike Summers and Oregon assistant Joe Bernardi, plus coaches from Iowa State, Oklahoma, and Kansas have all caught his attention.

Goddard Athlete Lukas Gutierrez has impressed over the summer standing out at both the Eastern New Mexico/NMMI camp in Roswell and at the New Mexico Highlands' camp in Ruidoso. Gutierrez will likely take over for Cody French at running back this year for now 2nd Year Head Coach Mike Whalen and Goddard Rockets.

Centennial duo Jerry Gurrola and Cameron Burkley each were among the top performers at the recent New Mexico Highlands camp held in Las Cruces. Burkley is a 6-foot-0, 260 pound offensive guard Gurrola is a 6-foot-0, 240 pound defensive end, each will be 4-year starters at Centennial during the start of the season.

So what is the recruiting scoop with Artesia Quarterback Justin Houghtaling? The 6-foot-5, 175 pound quarterback attended the Dallas Rivals Camp, Oakland Elite 11 and is planning to visit Norther Arizona, NMSU, Texas Tech, and possibly even a USC camp (he has been invited to all of these events). His stats from his junior year are as followed: Houghtaling threw for 3,436-yards (4th all-time at Artesia) and 38 touchdowns (Only Landry Jones and Paul Maupin threw more in a season).

*****
6-foot-1, 186 pound Kameron Miller out of Las Cruces (NM) has an early offer from New Mexico State. Miller will attend the following camps this summer: San Diego, Texas Tech, NMSU, Nevada, UNM, and Air Force. We're also told that Miller will attend the 2015 NMPreps Elite Combine to defend his 2014 Mr. Combine Performance.

Thursday Draft: New Mexico Concession Food Draft (June 11th)

The New Mexico High School gym Draft was fun and cool to see folks responses. Maybe we can keep this going on Thursdays.

Concession Food Draft for New Mexico: If you had one pick what would you take as the must have or best thing to get at the concession stand. If you knew me from my three years at NMP when I covered games I always had a short pick of items I got at the concession stand.

Only one pick.

FIRST ROUND
1. Navajo Taco - J Grine: I almost took my go-to of the frito pie (only at certain places - Up North) but when the school has the Navajo Taco I go with that as my pick.

D-1 Programs Holding Satellite Camps

From Orangebloods.com (Texas Rivals Site)

Michigan coach Jim Harbaugh was on Charlie Strong’s turf this week.

Harbaugh held two of his popular satellite camps in Texas to increase the notoriety of Michigan in this state. The Michigan coach held a camp in Houston on Monday, and another one in Grand Prairie on Tuesday. So far, there have been no pictures of a shirtless Harbaugh running around the football fields in Texas on the internet this week (thank God).

However, Michigan is not the only program actively pursuing kids from Texas.

Notre Dame will hold a one-day camp at Cedar Hill High School on June 16. Oklahoma State has been a part of satellite camps in Texas for several years. According to NCAA rules, school are allowed to hold camps on campus or within a 50-mile radius of their school. In addition, coaches can be a “guest coach” at a camp organized by another school, which is how they are able to conduct these satellite camps.

How cool would it be if Texas Tech held a camp in Albuquerque or Las Cruces for example
