Colorado placing pitch limits on high school pitchers

Will this become a trend among state Athletic Associations? The current rule is similar to NM: players cannot pitch more than 12 innings over three consecutive days, and their regular seasons are capped at 70 innings.

I don't think arm abuse is prevalent among the HS programs (although you hear about a situation here and there), but I sure hate to see the Athletic Associations micro-managing with Little League rules like this.

What do y'all think?

----------
Colorado has created a new rule for high school baseball pitchers in an attempt to minimize debilitating injuries.

This week, the Colorado High School Athletics Association established a 110-pitch cap along with required days of rest for pitchers with prolonged outings. The change will go into effect beginning with the 2016 season.
From the Coloradan:
Rest days will be determined by the number of pitches thrown in a game:
•For one to 35 pitches, no days off are required.
• For 36 to 60 pitches, one day of rest is required.
• For 61 to 85 pitches, two days are required.
• If a pitcher throws 86 to 110 times in a game, he's required to take three days off.
• The maximum amount of pitches allowed is 110.
Additionally, no pitcher may throw more than 60 pitches over a two-day span. If they hit 60 pitches in two days, one day of rest is required.
"Pitch count makes more sense than innings, there's no question about it," said Scott Bullock, coach of the defending Class 5A champion Rocky Mountain baseball team. "Teams won't be able to use just two starting pitchers. As a varsity baseball team, you should be developing three starters. Teams that have survived with two starters won't be able to do that again."
Pitching injuries have become more problematic in recent years, and high pitch counts are often viewed as the culprit. Dr. James Andrews, a renowned orthopedic surgeon who has conducted a number of Tommy John operations, even helped create an app last year to assist coaches in tracking pitch counts and recommend days of rest.
This new rule could go a long way in keeping pitchers healthy, but you have to imagine it's also going to have an effect on the field. Batters might be more inclined to take pitches, while coaches will undoubtedly be more careful about when and how they use their best arms.
As the Coloradoan notes, the current rule is players cannot pitch more than 12 innings over three consecutive days, and their regular seasons are capped at 70 innings.

Possible Tikets Snafu For Hobbs/Carlsbad @ Tasker

Many of the seats at Tasker Arena are sold before the season starts for season ticket holders. Well over half of the seats in Tasker Arena are season or reserved seats. There are also many "All Sports Passes" (flat fee for all athletic events) and other passes that gain entry into Tasker Arena except for the Hobbs/Clovis basketball game. For that game only you must go to ticket office inside Admin. during business hours and get your pass punched and be issued an actual game ticket. The various passes are not allowed for that one Clovis basketball game.

Here is the new problem...for the Carlsbad game this Friday at Tasker Arena that exclusion probably should have been issued but it was not. So, if you have a pass of some sort you must get there very early or you could be denied entry because of overflow. Also, if you do not get there early and you plan on buying a ticket at the box office windows there may be none left. For those going, please let everyone know about this to prevent as many problems as possible.

3. Carlsbad Cavemen - 14-4 on the season. Win that is going to come in handy is beating Valley 70-49.
4. Valley Vikings - 11-7 on the season. Started off slow in December, but are 1st in district 5-5A after beating Albuquerque Tuesday

Class 5A
1. Centennial - 15-4 on the season, best resume overall with with wins over Cleveland and Hobbs. Also split with Roswell.
2. Roswell - 15-3 on the season, riding a two game losing streak. Split with Centennial
3. Gallup - 18-1 on the season. Beat St. Pius X, beat Rio Rancho, and have beaten Grans twice.
4. St. Pius X 12-3 on the season. Key wins come against West LV and West Mesa. Lost to Gallup, Deming, and Albuquerque.

Class 4A
1. Hope Christian - 17-4. Riding a 9 game winning streak, beat West LV and St. Mike’s
2. West LV - 14-5. Overall resume is ok, but need to close out district. Lost to Portales and to Hope Christian
3. Pojoaque - 13-5 - Beating St. Mike’s is the shining star on their resume. Let’s see what they can do in district.
4. St. Mike’s - 11-9. Lost to Pojoaque, but what will help them is the fact that they beat Portales twice this year.

Class 3A

1. Mesilla Valley Christian - 14-2. Best resume of the bunch with wins over Espanola, Artesia, Silver, and Cobre. Lost to Cliff and Portales.
2. Laguna Acoma - 16-3 - They are 16-0 against New Mexico comp. They have also beaten Silver and have a recent standout win against Santa Rosa.
3. Tucumcari - 16-2 - You could seed Tucumcari 1-3, but their two losses come against two very good smaller schools losing to Logan and to Magdalena. They have beat a very good Texico team twice and also beat Santa Fe Prep and beat Portales, yes the same Portales that beat Mesilla Valley.
4. Santa Fe Prep - 12-5 - Have played a loaded schedule and have wins against Goddard, Deming, and Lovington. Lost to Tucumcari 62-60.

Class 2A

1. Magdalena - 17-0 - Undefeated on the year, no other 2A team can say that. Beat Tucumcari, Santa Rosa.
2. Escalante - 16-1 - Only loss is to Mora. Don't have too many standout wins on their schedule. Need to finish perfect to retain this seed, still play Mora twice, maybe three more times.
3. Logan - 13-3 - Beat Tucumcari, beat Texico, and have played Clayton close twice. Losses come against Felt and to Clayton. Could eventually grab the #2 spot.
4. Mora - 11-5 - It will be interesting to see where Mora finishes out. Beat Escalante and as mentioned still play the Lobos 2, maybe even three times.

Why does Centennial not play Cruces, Onate, or Mayfield???

No logical reason why these in-city schools aren't on Centennial's schedule. Dumb scheduling by LCPS. Football had both Las Cruces and Onate on the Centennial schedule and had HUGE crowds (and CHS won both of them). Not only do they miss out on generating some decent revenue and fan interest with these games, they decide to spend serious cash (food, buses, gas, lodging) on Centennial's road games: Roswell, Belen Tournament (2 nights hotel), Hobbs Tourney/Clovis/Artesia (5 nights hotel!), West Mesa/Albuquerque (1 night hotel).

Common sense????......nope.

Tucumcari Continues to Roll

Tucumcari continues to show it's stuff as a serious contender for the state title in 3A. They show great team speed and are very disciplined in how they execute to control tempo. Hats off to their boys and Coach Span.

That being said, I wish I could go to their next game--30 Jan versus Clayton. While a district game, both of these teams are built for a deep March playoff run. Taking nothing away from the Yellow Jackets, the outcome of this first district game will set the tone for the rest of their season. Having two of the top three teams in state play each other in district (twice) will make for one heck of a district season and championship. Throw in Santa Rosa who is also in the mix, and it gets even better.
