Hobbs Wins 37th In a Row Vs. Carlsbad In Tasker Arena

It was 1986 when Carlsbad last beat Hobbs in Tasker Arena. That was 29 years ago with the same result tonight as Hobbs won 75-64. This game had it all. Technical, intentional fouls, a game that should have had first downs and touchdowns, huge crowd going wild and Carlsbad players challenging Hobbs fans (not a good idea). But most significantly, their head coach made a huge mistake by going crazy doing a long helicopter wave with a big towel to incite their fans. It certainly incited them but it also infuriated the Hobbs faithful and the Eagles were then motivated out of their minds and that mistake was THE turning point. We discussed how we used to be big admirers of their coach. We got over that tonight due to the tactics that he used &/or condoned. He and some of his players were lustily booed for their antics. Sad, since their coach came from Hobbs. A sports writer called it "bully ball." And that was being polite. As others have pointed out...it was not wise to try to punk Hobbs in Tasker Arena.

So here is the deal...Hobbs' next two district games are against Alamogordo and Clovis in Hobbs and the Eagles will almost certainly be 23-1 and 4-0 in district when the rematch happens in Carlsbad. Can Hobbs win in Carlsbad? Solid chance especially since the "ice rink" floor at Carlsbad has finally been replaced. Playing on a wood floor where you are not slipping and sliding has got to be worth at least 10 points to Hobbs. Hobbs will surely go 26-1 and 6-0 or 25-2 and 5-1. If Carlsbad wins out then that will probably force a playoff game. I don't know if I can take losing my voice two or more times. LOL However (there is always a however), Carlsbad has the coaching, the height, the depth, the 3 point shooters, the speed and the talent to win the state championship this year. Something that they have not done since the early 50's. Who would you bet on...the starved dog or the fat dog in a battle for the bone?

Late Season Run

Are there any teams you see making a late season run? After sitting through several La Cueva games, they seem like a team that may just turn it on at some point in the season and take off. They have some stretches where they can be pretty good. I see them getting better as the season progresses. The same goes for Sandia. I think their size will present some real problems for teams down the road.

Mot Important Superbowl Factor: Menu

OK, we all know the most important thing about the Super Bowl today is the food you will consume over the course of the contest. So what will it be?

In the Gurrola house we will pre game with Super Nachos; blue corn chips covered with a melted cheddar and Monterey jack blend, chorizo I made wednesday, hot green chile, guacamole, and sour cream. Half time snacks will be wings. I will make some crispy hot wings and fresh ginger and garlic Asian wings. I will also make an onion dip by my daughter's request. I sauté yellow and green onion, with leeks and minced garlic, oh my, good stuff. I like to drink Sierra Nevada Pale Ale while I cook, but prefer a Mexican Coke while I eat. What's the prediction? Pain...
