Girls Basketball Spotlight - Jan. 11th

6A Girls Player of the Week
Amaya Brown (Cibola (Albuquerque, NM)), freshman guard

Brown helped Cibola win the APS Metro. She scored 19 points in the quarterfinals against Valley, then dropped 17 points in the semifinals against 4A Hope Christian. In the championship game, Brown led a trio of Cibola players in double-figures with 13 points.

6A Girls Team of the Week
Cibola (Albuquerque, NM), 12-1

Cibola, the top seed in the APS Metro tournament, easily took care of Highland to open the tournament. Highland only scored 12 total points. In the quarterfinals, Valley couldn't handle freshman Amaya Brown as Cibola advanced to setup a matchup with 4A Hope Christian in the tournament semifinals. Brown against dominated to help CIbola defeat Hope and advance to the championship game against La Cueva. La Cueva made a fourth-quarter rally, but it wasn't enough to beat the balanced scoring of the Cougars.

5A Girls Player of the Week
Mariah Forde (Belen), senior guard/forward

Forde scored a team-high 14 points in the championship game of the Sandia Prep tournament against the host team. She also helped the Eagles defeat 2A Ramah and No. 2 (in 5A) Los Alamos.

5A Girls Team of the Week
Los Lunas High, 11-2

The Tigers earned three wins this week, but most impressively they handed Gallup their second loss of the season. The road win jumpstarted a week that was capped off by beating St. Pius X (Albuquerque, NM) and Bernalillo. Five teams have only two losses in Class 5A (Los Alamos, Espanola Valley, and Roswell High are the three other 2-loss teams). Los Lunas High is on a six-game winning streak. Belen also deserves recognition for winning Sandia Prep's tournament with a redemption win against Los Alamos.

4A Girls Player of the Week
Tanisha Begay (Shiprock), sophomore guard/forward

The sophomore earned the MVP honor at the Webb Toyota Invite (Kirtland Central) over the weekend as she helped her team beat 5A Farmington High and Fruita Monument (Fruita, CO) twice.

4A Girls Team of the Week
Shiprock, 10-3

Shiprock won the Webb Toyota Invite (Kirtland Central) by defeating 5A Farmington High and Fruita Monument (Fruita, CO) twice win the tournament. Tanishq Begay was named MVP of the tournament.

1A-3A Girls Player of the Week
Caley Barnard (Melrose), 2A, senior guard

Barnard scored 22 points against Texico in the EPAC tournament semifinals. In the championship game versus Logan, she chipped in 14 points as Taylor Bostwick led the way with 19 points.

1A-3A Girls Team of the Week

Interesting Highlight Vids Of Hobbs Holiday Tournament

Hobbs High is blessed with a very good photographer/videographer system for sports and events. The Hobbs Holiday Tournament is featured on the face page of hobbsschools.net. The video covers all three Hobbs games and does a really good job of laying out the final minutes of the championship game with Centennial. The crowd sizes were disappointing due to really bad weather, road conditions, closures and adjusted times but you can get an idea especially if you have never been to Tasker Arena. On the face page go to the bottom left and click on the game pic. Feel free to review the website and the archives. The Hobbs High web site is a class act.
