Biggest Win of the First Round

Feature 5A Quarterfinals: Preview & Predictions

5A Quarterfinals: Preview & Predictions

#1 Volcano Vista Hawks vs #9 Atrisco Heritage Jaguars (8:15pm/The PIT): The two meetings during district play favored the Hawks. The story for the Hawks in the first round was the story that we knew all season -- Sean Atler (2023) is a stud. He dropped 27 points in the win. All-New Mexico standout Chris Parra (2023) is back for Atrisco Heritage and the Jags have enough talented to do the "unthinkable".

Prediction: Volcano Vista 60, Atrisco Heritage 51

#2 Sandia Matadors vs #7 Cleveland Storm (4:45pm/The PIT): Similar to the VV-AH game the Sandia Matadors and Cleveland Storm met this season and the results are a bit mixed. Sandia came out ahead on both games but the first was a 20-point win (77-57) followed by a week later the Storm used a big first half to take a lead before Sandia's big fourth quarter moved them ahead for the win, 66-59.

Prediction: Sandia 68, Cleveland 57

#3 Los Lunas Tigers vs #11 La Cueva Bears (1:15pm/The PIT): This has the potential to be the standoff of the day. Both will run their sets, control the tempo, and use their talent. Cameron Dyer and Jalin Holland are two must-see 2025 prospects -- however both feature seniors that carry the load this post-season. Ezra Guest and Geleio Griego for Los Lunas and Cedarious Yates on the La Cueva side.

Prediction: Los Lunas 54, La Cueva 52

#4 West Mesa Mustangs vs #5 Organ Mountain Knights (9:45am/The PIT): The storyline for the 5A quarterfinals could read the same -- talent. The Knights feature junior Brandon Kehres, a 6-foot-5 forward with next level talent. He's putting in 13.4 points and 8.6 rebounds per game. West Mesa has the core of Elijah Brody (2024) and Sonny Ortiz (2023) providing the punch for a talent Mustangs group.

Prediction: West Mesa 61, Organ Mountain 52

Feature Quarterfinals: Preview & Predictions

Quarterfinals: Preview & Predictions

5A BASKETBALL

#1 Hobbs vs #8 Sandia (4:45pm/The PIT):
The first game was even, outside of a bad third quarter for Sandia (Hobbs 66, Sandia 57) back in early January. Sydney Benally (2025) and Bhret Clay (2025) are not only both top sophomores, they are top-10 ranked players in New Mexico.

Prediction: Hobbs 68, Sandia 54

#2 Farmington vs #7 Las Cruces (8:15pm/The PIT): The red or green evening game on Tuesday night put a high scoring Farmington team against a Las Cruces team that likes to keep in low in scoring. Kapiolani Anitielu (Farmington HS/2024) is a special talent. Las Cruces features Lika Ashida (2023) averaging 17 ppg and 6 rbpg.

Prediction: Farmington 74, Las Cruces 58

#3 Volcano Vista vs #6 Centennial (1:15pm/The PIT): Lisa Villarael and Joey Carpenter (Hobbs) are at the top of any coaching rankings in New Mexico. She again has the Hawks in position to make a run at the title. Taejhuan Hill (Volcano Vista HS/2024) is the top ranked post player in New Mexico. Aspen Salazar (2023) is averaging 20 ppg for the Centennial Hawks.

Prediction: Volcano Vista 63, Centennial 60

#4 Carlsbad vs #5 La Cueva (9:45am/The PIT): Carlsbad and La Cueva give us a perfect match up with two teams that have a similar style. Jordyn Dyer (La Cueva HS/2026) has quickly become the top ranked freshmen in New Mexico. Mariana Sepulveda (Carlsbad HS) could have the game to get her on the spotlight.

Prediction: Carlsbad 51, La Cueva 49

Grine Picks: Hobbs, Farmington, Centennial, La Cueva

4A BASKETBALL

#1 Kirtland Central vs #8 Bloomfield (6:30pm/The PIT): The reigning state champions own the regular season series (2-0) but the Bobcats battled tough in a 9-point loss mid-February. Aliya Quintana (2024) is averaging a double-double for Bloomfield 11 points and 12 rebounds per game.

Prediction: Kirtland Central 58, Bloomfield 52

#2 Gallup vs #10 Valencia (3pm/The PIT): The first game between the schools, Gallup 50-35, tells the story in this game. Gallup can score, when they do, they do it in bunches. Valencia prefers to slow the tempo down. Look for Gallup to go on runs but Valencia has returned to the elite eight, it's been awhile.

Prediction: Gallup 61, Valencia 43

#3 St. Pius X vs #6 Los Alamos (11:30am/The PIT): I like this match up and round two should shape up nicely for a mid-day battle. St. Pius has the super talented guard Alyssa Maes (2024) who is a walking bucket. Los Alamos is surrounded with key role players that could lead on any given night -- Tara McDonald (2023) is a star in the making for a Final Four run.

Prediction: St. Pius X 55, Los Alamos 54

#4 Artesia vs #5 Hope Christian (8am/The PIT): Grab the burrito, the coffee, and head to the PIT for this breakfast match-up. Similar to the first game, look for the inside presence of Kathleen Obisike (2023) to be a factor but the half-court pressure of the guards could rattle the Bulldogs.

Prediction: Hope Christian 57, Artesia 49

Grine's Picks: Kirtland Central, Gallup, Los Alamos, Hope Christian

NMPreps guide to the 2023 New Mexico high school basketball state tournament. #nmpreps

No. 1 St. Michael's Horsemen (23-4 overall) vs No. 16 Tucumcari Rattlers (9-16 overall)

Preview: St. Michael's, fresh off a difficult District 2-3A championship, is riding an eighteen-game winning streak that includes victories over teams seeded in the top-nine. St. Mikes Adam Montoya (2023) could earn All-New Mexico honors and looking to continue a strong candidacy for 3A player of the year. There are no easy draws when you're a 16-seed but this is perhaps an especially tough one for a young Tucumcari squad that has promise in the coming years.

Prediction: St. Michael's 72, Tucumcari 51

No. 2 Navajo Prep Eagles (24-2 overall) vs No. 15 Cobre Indians (10-18 overall)

Preview: The Navajo Prep Eagles are a 14-game win streak, having lost just twice all season, with those defeats coming against 6A Roswell and 5A Gallup. The Eagles trio of Orio King (2024), Xavier Nez (2025), and Jude Thomas (2024) create one of the better cores this season. Thomas leads the way with 18 points, 5 assists, and 3 steals per game. For Cobre the nearly 800-mile round trip will be the highlight of the weekend -- they did face Navajo Prep in December losing 71-36.

Prediction: Navajo Prep 75, Cobre 34

No. 3 Robertson Cardinals (23-5 overall) vs No. 14 Santa Fe Prep Blue Griffins (11-14 overall)

Preview: Perhaps one of the biggest flaws of the state tournament pairings every March is when two district opponents meet up in the first round, after weeks of playing against each other. Well, the reigning 3A state champions will look to take the fourth contest between the schools. Santa Fe Prep did show some fight on February 4th meeting at home losing by two, 69-67. Post player Bodie Schlinger (2023) is going to be a tough match up for any team this post season. The forward averages 15 points and 10 rebounds per game for Robertson.

Prediction: Robertson 61, Santa Fe Prep 49.

No. 4 Sandia Prep Sundevils (16-10 overall) vs No. 13 Newcomb Skyhawks (13-15 overall)

Preview: There's a lot to like with Sandia Prep, currently riding a ten-game winning streak. Senior wing Jaxon Feit has been part of three post seasons for the Sundevils and provides experience to a streaking team. Newcomb did well out of district play going 5-2 and will travel well to Albuquerque this Saturday.

Prediction: Sandia Prep 67, Newcomb 48

No. 5 Crownpoint Eagles (22-7 overall) vs No. 12 West Las Vegas Dons (14-14 overall)

Preview: For the second year in a row the West Las Vegas Dons are the 12-seed. For the second year in a row they are a favorable pick to pull an upset in the first round. Tyrell Archie Crownpoint's best player and is leading the team in every category -- 17 points, 7 rebounds, and 3 assists per game. The Eagles won a state game last season and they are looking to make it a longer stay in the tournament this year as Final Four hopefuls. Although sometimes unfair, this is on the upset radar list.

Prediction: Crownpoint 58, West Las Vegas 57

No. 6 Bosque Bobcats (20-9 overall) vs No. 11 Ruidoso Warriors (15-9 overall)

Preview: The Bobcats have the opportunity to bring a dangerous brand of basketball in this match-up, that's when the Bobcats are running up and down the floor, with talents Kyle Morris (2024), Cooper Hautau (2024) and Ezra Elliott (2023) able to get buckets in a hurry. Ruidoso, an automatic bid after winning the District 4-3A championship, will look to senior Logan Sandoval (15 ppg) to guide them in this opening round contest.

Prediction: Bosque 64, Ruidoso 51

No. 7 Santa Fe Indian Braves (19-10) vs No. 10 Hot Springs Tigers (18-9 overall)

Preview: Santa Fe Indian made a Final Four run as an 11-seed last March. Those same Final Four hopes ride with seniors Owen Pecos and Taylor Torivio, the two standouts for the Braves, this season. Add in the outside shooting of Jamal Alonzo, and the Braves have everything needed to avoid an upset in the opening round. Hot Springs, is that description of a team that could pull an upset, they became an early pick by many to reach the second week of March. The Tigers are coming off a district tournament championship after beating top seed Socorro.

Prediction: Santa Fe Indian 62, Hot Springs 57

No. 8 Tohatchi Cougars (18-10 overall) vs No. 9 Socorro Warriors (11-16 overall)

Preview: A rematch from a January 25th meeting won by Tohatchi, 73-61. Tohatchi Cougars shook off a first half deficit in that game to beat the Warriors and will have to shake off talented players Warren Chewiwi (2023), Will Griego (2024) and Marcus Armijo (2023). Tohatchi winners of 5 of the last 6 games, likes to push the tempo but it is the defense that has been a stronghold for this team. Tohatchi is a very sound and dangerous squad. Josh Dawes (2025) is the name to know.

NMPreps guide to the 2023 New Mexico high school basketball state tournament. #nmpreps

No. 1 Volcano Vista Hawks (25-1 overall) vs No. 16 Capital Jaguars (16-11 overall)

Preview: Perhaps one of the most known duos in the state -- Kenyon Aguino (2025) and Sean Alter (2023) -- look to defend their 5A state championship title. Head coach Greg Brown continues to reload with talent at VVHS and this one should go in favor of the top-seed.

The Jaguars run to end the district season has been the talk of the classification, eventually it earned them an extended week of basketball. Isaac Ortega and Izaya Sanchez-Valencia will provide a scoring threat for an undersized Jaguars team.

Prediction: Volcano Vista 71, Capital 56

No. 2 Sandia Matadors (23-5 overall) vs No. 15 Rio Grande Ravens (15-12 overall)

Preview: The Sandia Matadors are back. Back at the top. So is head coach Danny Brown who once coached the Highland Hornets to the title game. Can he do the same with a Matadors roster that features depth but most importantly a trio of Andrew Hill (2023), Dalen Moyer (2023) and Ely Lovato (2023). This squad is talented and they'll now have to win with the target.

The workload will fall to key Raven players Jonah Lopez (2023) and Santiago Gonzalez (2024), Lopez leads the program with 21 points per game (8.1 rebounds, and 3 assists). The Ravens have returned to the state tournament and at one point appeared to be destined for a top-seed and two game stay. Can they be the second team ever to win as a 15-seed? They'll have to return to late January-early February form.

Prediction: Sandia 77, Rio Grande 58

No. 3 Los Lunas Tigers (23-6 overall) vs No. 14 Las Cruces Bulldawgs (16-11 overall)

Preview: One thing that's for certain is that the 5A program has plenty of talent. The 3-seed Los Lunas Tigers preview will go like the other top seeds in the bracket. A core of of players that have the potential to lead them to a title. The Tigers have D-1 recruit Jalin Holland (2025) but don't miss out on the play of two guards that we really liked -- Geleio Griego (2023) and Ezra Guest (2023). The senior shooting guards can knock it down if left alone.

The Las Cruces Bulldawgs roster may lack the D-1 talent that it featured during their state runner up season a year ago but don't take the Dawgs lightly. Head coach William Benjamin continues to produce teams that play late into March. Two names to like in this game are Suge Valles (2024) and 6-foot-8 post Caleb Carr (2023).

Prediction: Los Lunas 53, Las Cruces 50

No. 4 West Mesa Mustangs (21-8 overall) vs No. 13 Santa Fe Demons (18-11 overall)

Preview: Elijah Brody (2024), Brandon Lagunas (2023), Sonny Ortiz (2024), and company have produced one of the most talented Mustangs teams in many years. Also, earned the highest seed since the NMAA moved the state brackets to feature 16-teams. They have an opportunity to reach their first Final Four in the current format (2006). Longtime head coach Shonn Schroer is one of the longest tenured head coaches at his current school and this could be the year they make a long stay in March.

The Santa Fe Demons are no stranger to being the underdog. They'll be that again this March. Lukas Turner (2023) is the engine that makes them go and he'll be the focus for the Demons on Saturday night.

Prediction: West Mesa 62, Santa Fe 53

No. 5 Organ Mountain Knights (23-4 overall) vs No. 12 Hobbs Eagles (15-13 overall)

Preview: Organ Mountain claimed the District 3-6A championship this season and now turn to the state tournament with hopes of a Final Four run. Brandon Kehres (2024) considered one of the top five of prospect in the state of New Mexico and has played well all season with averages of 13.6 ppg, and 8.7 rpg. The forward has been a key player on a team that has some depth, especially in fellow junior Yehnhi Wilson at the guard position.

The tradition of Hobbs basketball lives in us all and although they battled to a three point loss (71-68) back in December to Organ Mountain, most are not taking the Eagles to upset here. The unfortunate part is that scoring talent Michael Mackey (2023) will not have the chance to light up the PIT floor. Mackey is averaging 23.5 points per game and his season featured a 51-point night.

Prediction: Organ Mountain 68, Hobbs 61

No. 6 Carlsbad Cavemen (20-7 overall) vs No. 11 La Cueva Bears (15-12 overall)

Preview: Head coach John Zumbrun seems to find talent in Carlsbad. After years on the girls side he will now guide the boys into the post-season. Damian Perez (2023) has recruits looking at him and he will lead the Cavemen forward this state tournament.

The La Cueva Bears had more departures than any program in the state and they've survived most of them making it to state as an 11-seed. The team is well rounded with five players averaging in double-figures this season. One player that is having a standout sophomore campaign is Cameron Dyer who is averaging 10.4 points per game, 4.7 rebounds, and 4.3 assists. If they can stay fresh on that long bus ride they Bears should battle as an upset hopeful.

Prediction: Carlsbad 58, La Cueva 56

No. 7 Cleveland Storm (20-8 overall) vs No. 10 Eldorado Eagles (18-11 overall)

Preview: When the Cleveland Storm and Eldorado Eagles tip-off it'll be another game that displays the level of parity across the classification. This one has the potential to go down to the wire and fans will see plenty of talent. Cleveland features Daniel Steverson (2024) a next level guard that has all of the tools to lead the Storm to another Final Four birth. Eldorado features Caileb Parham (2023) who has been one of the most known players in the metro area the past two years. Both have some size, play makers, it'll come down to knocking down shots/free-throws in the fourth quarter.

Prediction: Cleveland 66, Eldorado 61

No. 8 Rio Rancho Rams (18-10 overall) vs No. 9 Atrisco Heritage Academy Jaguars (20-8) overall)

Preview: The two teams know each other well coming from district 1-5A and playing three time in the past month. Rio Rancho owns the series 2-1 and took the final game, 44-41, during the district tournament. Looking at the scores (53-51 RR, 54-30 AHA, 44-41 RR) and we could have what is potentially the game of the day, in any class. The Rams have stars Jayden Johnson, Maddox Presser, and Jamal Bynum. Atrisco Heritage features Chris Parra (2023), Latavious Morris (2025), and Marquise Renfro (2024). Don't miss this one.

Prediction: Atrisco Heritage 55, Rio Rancho 54
