SECollege Ball II

ENMU ended their season with a loss to WT. They had a good season. Ended the season with a 17-12 overall and 12-10 in conference record. I like this coach for ENMU because he gives NM kids a chance.

NMJC ended with a 12-18 overall and 5-11 conference record.

University of the SW ended with a 12-16 overall and 8-12 conference record.

NMMI ended with a 9-21 overall and 2-14 conference record.

That’s a wrap for college ball in the SE.

NMPreps guide to the 2023 New Mexico high school basketball state tournament. #nmpreps

No. 1 Albuquerque Academy Chargers (23-3 overall) vs No. 16 Goddard Rockets (13-15 overall)

Preview: Albuquerque Academy returned the core of players who engineered last seasons quarterfinals appearance -- that experience has propelled the Chargers into the 1-seed. Featuring the trio of Kellan Gehres (2023), Dillon McCleskey (2024), and forward Joe Jack (2024) have the masses picking the Chargers to make the final day. After starting the season 3-8 the Goddard Rockets finished the heart of the season 10-5, earning the final spot in the tournament. Rhett Price (2023) put in steady numbers this season with averages of 11 points and 8 rebounds per game. The two teams met the first week of December, Academy winning 65-47.

Prediction: Albuquerque 60, Goddard 51

No. 2 Highland Hornets (20-7 overall) vs No. 15 Pojoaque Valley Elks (16-11 overall)

Preview: Highland head coach Justin Woody continues to keep the Hive at the top of the 4A basketball scene. The Hornets are averaging 66 points per game this season but they are not shy to share the ball (over 17 per) and controlling the boards (over 31 per). Alexis Dominguez (2023), Brandon Medina (2023), and Jesus Licon (2025) lead a deep roster of contributors. Dominguez averages 19 points, 4 rebounds, and 4 assists per game. For the Elks they'll ride on the shooting of Derek Sanchez, he sits near the top of the scoring ranks with a 25 points per game average. This is the first meeting between the schools.

Prediction: Highland 71, Pojoaque 56

No. 3 St. Pius X Sartans (18-9 overall) vs No. 14 Silver Fighting Colts (17-10 overall)

Preview: St. Pius' best this season has been really impressive and reminiscent of some of the Damian Segura title teams. Now, it's head coach Ryan Myers guiding the Sartans into the playoffs and on the hunt for another Final Four run, maybe more. Chris Coash (2023), Brian Kalb (2023), and Gene Trujillo (2023) create a crowded paint for opposing teams and should be a factor in this match up. Silver, winners of 8 of the last 9 games, has hopes of an upset after traveling over 4 hours for the game on Saturday. This is the first meeting between the teams this season.

Prediction: St. Pius X 58, Silver 47

No. 4 Artesia Bulldogs (18-9 overall) vs No. 13 Valencia Jaguars (13-15 overall)

Preview: Now the radar starts. No, as you can scroll to down, we are not taking Valencia over Artesia. However, don't be shocked if they keep it low in scoring and tight throughout the start of the game. Jaguars head coach Jesse Hathoot has resurged the Valencia program and forward Ali Abdullah is better post player than what the Bulldogs have seen since district play started.

The Bulldogs, guided by coach Michael Mondragon, are a lock to have their one of the best post season runs. They featuring scoring in the form of All-New Mexico level guard Nick Sanchez (2023). They feature solid inside play from Rylee Jarratt (2023). It'll be close but the Dogs should win.

Prediction: Artesia 45, Valencia 42

No. 5 Gallup Bengals (21-7 overall) vs No. 12 Valley Vikings (13-14 overall)

Preview: The classic 5-12 game, considered the upset game to pick, solely based on the numbers. Well, we haven't seen a 12 over a 5 since 2019 (Del Norte over Espanola). What do the numbers say this season? Gallup, winners of 20 games (11 of the final 12), something that coach Josh Dunlap is consistent at doing is getting to 20 wins. The Bengals are averaging over 70-points per game this season, in the last ten games that number is closer to 80. The Valley fanbase is solid, when they show up, but the Gallup atmosphere will be something new for the Vikings.

Valley had to battle through the toughest district in the state with the likes of Academy, Hope, and Del Norte on a nightly bases. Julian Chavez (2024) and Tyler Kozlowski (2024) mentioned throughout the season and they are the reason that you would consider taking them as an upset team.

Prediction: Gallup 65, Valley 57

No. 6 Hope Christian Huskies (18-10 overall) vs No. 11 Kirtland Central Broncos (18-9 overall)

Preview: Hope Christian hasn't made it to the quarterfinals round since 2020 -- yes, that's a long time for the Huskies program. Well, this season they have the scoring and next level play of 6-3 wing Jett Wyckoff (2023) who could be the most known name come Final Four weekend. The Kirtland Central Broncos built a solid resume this season and in large part to the scoring of Satchel Hogue (2023) who reached the 1,000 points career milestone. The Huskies should win but the Broncos will be well coached and ready.

Prediction: Hope Christian 65, Kirtland Central 59

No. 7 Taos Tigers (17-10 overall) vs No. 10 Portales (17-11 overall)

Preview: Perhaps the game to watch in the opening round if you like potential upsets. The Tigers have been a team fighting uphill but falling short or on the wrong side of upsets in their last two trips to state. In, 2020 they lost as an 8-seed to the 9-seed and last season they lost as the 2-seed to a 7-seed. Can they avoid it this season? That could ride on the shoulders of big man Daemon Ely (2023) who is putting in All-New Mexico numbers with 24 points and 14 rebounds per game.

Like his father, Randy McBroom, will have watched more film than just about any coach this week -- don't be surprised if he knows what Taos had for lunch all week. That means, Portales will be ready and will throw everything at the Tigers in this game. Two reasons to like the Rams this post season sit in the frontcourt with Xodus Gomez (2023) and Davian Lucero (2023).

Prediction: Portales 61, Taos 59 *Upset Alert*

No. 8 Deming Wildcats (18-11 overall) vs No. 9 Del Norte Knights (15-12 overall)

Preview: The match up that any top-8 seed wants to avoid -- Del Norte. The Knights have won as the higher seed more than any other 4A program. Under head coach Jerron McIntosh the Knights are considered the most dangerous team in March. That should remain the same this state tournament with 2021 New Mexico Mr. Basketball Shane Douma-Sanchez making his final tournament appearance. The Knights guard has had one of the most outstanding careers and definitely one of the names to remember.

Hey! Yes, we didn't forget about the home team, the 8-seed, the Deming Wildcats. Alexander Alfaro (2023) is the name to know, if they escape the Knights in the opening round. Alfaro is averaging 21 points and 12 rebounds per game along with 3 steals per. After winning the district championship the Wildcats are looking to make a statement in the first round.

Prediction: Del Norte 64, Deming 55 *Upset Aler*

NMPreps guide to the 2023 New Mexico high school basketball state tournament. #nmpreps

No. 1 Pecos Panthers (24-3 overall) vs No. 16 McCurdy Bobcats (15-14 overall)

Preview: Like most 16-1 games, this should be a mismatch. Pecos continues to be a power in 2A basketball. The first meeting between the schools went to Pecos 81-43 back in December. The Panthers have plenty of weapons and it will be a post season behind guards Malik Barrens (2023) and Jodaiah Padilla (2023).

Prediction: Pecos 77, McCurdy 45.

No. 2 Academy for Technology Phoenix (23-6 overall) vs No. 15 Tatum Coyotes (15-13 overall)

Preview: Head coach Bobby Romero has built a winner at ATC and for the first time in program history they have made the state tournament. The Phoenix are led by wing Julian Bernardino (2024) and guard Jordan Apodaca (2024). ATC is 12-1 at home and averaging over 60 points per game this season.

Prediction: ATC 55, Tatum 43

No. 3 Texico Wolverines (15-12 overall) vs No. 14 Dulce Hawks (16-12 overall)

Preview: Texico has the talent to challenge the rest of the teams on their side of the bracket for a potential rematch with Pecos in the title game. Max Villareal (2023), Cade Figg (2024), and Alex Fuentes (2025) provide the Wolverines with a tough trio.

Prediction: Texico 64, Dulce 51

No. 4 Menaul Panthers (20-9 overall) vs No. 13 Lordsburg Mavericks (16-10 overall)

Preview: Menaul was incredibly impressive last season winning the state championship as a 5-seed. Can they make another run at the title? Prashant Chouhan is a top talent in 2A basketball and is averaging 16 ppg and 12 rbg this season. Ramon Ochoa leads Lordsburg this season -- 19 ppg, 10 rbg. Offensively both teams are similar and it could be a radar game to watch.

Prediction: Menaul 58, Lordsburg 52

No. 5 Santa Rosa Lions (19-9 overall) vs No. 12 Rehoboth Christian Lynx (15-10 overall)

Preview: With head coach Joseph Esquibel back at the helm the Lions are flirting at being back to the top of the classification. After a rough finish to the season (1-4) the Lions are battle tested -- three of the four losses come at the hands of Pecos (No. 1) and Texico (No. 3). Most consider them the favorite to come out of their four team quadrant which would have them in the Final Four.

Prediction: Santa Rosa 60, Rehoboth Christian 51

No. 6 Escalante Lobos (19-7 overall) vs No. 11 Mesa Vista Trojans (16-12 overall)

Preview: The two teams are familiar with each other coming from the same district. Easily becoming an upset pick or radar game for many as they split the season series, each winning on the road. Luka Torrez guides the 6-seed Lobos putting in 17 points and 10 rebounds per game in 2023.

Prediction: Escalante 57, Mesa Vista 55 (OT)

No. 7 Jal Panthers (18-9 overall) vs No. 10 Clayton Yellowjackets (13-12 overall)

Preview: 5 hours and forty minutes and/or 354 miles. Either way that you look at it this is a road trip that could take the Yellowjackets through Texas (faster route according to my map). Awaiting for their arrival is one of the top athletes in New Mexico high school athletics with Jacob Lujan (2023). If Jal can get their offense going they should avoid an upset from a Clayton team that has been known to come out hot. Keep an eye on this one.

Prediction: Jal 61, Clayton 54.

No. 8 Eunice Cardinals (18-8 overall) vs No. 9 Tularosa Wildcats (17-9 overall)

Preview: Toss up here, Tularosa has played a difficult schedule and will look to Dillon Salazar to make a run this post season. Eunice enters with some momentum after winning the district tournament championship as a 2-seed (over Jal). This could turn into a low scoring affair between teams that thrive at holding opponents below their scoring average.

Prediction: Tularosa 55, Eunice 50

NMPreps guide to the 2023 New Mexico high school basketball state tournament. #nmpreps

No. 1 Magdalena Steers (28-0 overall) vs No. 16 To'hajiilee Warriors (12-9 overall)

Preview: Just like a year ago, the Steers come into March as the prohibitive favorites to win the title. The defending 1A state champions open tournament play Saturday against To'hajiilee. The Steers are currently riding a 43-game win streak that dates back to January 19th, 2022. This will be the first meeting between the programs this season.

Player to Watch: D'Shaun Vinyard (Magdalena) currently leads the Steers in scoring with 18.6 points per game.

Prediction: Magdalena 68, To'hajiilee 29 (Mag, -33.5)

No. 2 Fort Sumner Foxes (25-2 overall) vs No. 15 Pine Hill Warriors (14-13 overall)

Preview: Last season Fort Sumner left the state tournament in the first round after being upset as a six seed (No. 11 Reserve 60, No. 6 Fort Sumner 58). The results this year favors the Foxes in a big way when the square off with Pine Hill, opening as 32-point favorites, so any sign of an upset is not a question The Foxes feature one of the better duos (trios) in the state with sharp shooter Joaquin Segura (2024) and 6-foot-7 post Cash Burney (2024) in the paint.

Player to Watch: Clay Norman (2023) is the senior that can score in a hurry and puts in around 17 points per game.

Prediction: Fort Sumner 72, Pine Hill 30 (Forte, -31.5)

No. 3 Melrose Buffaloes (21-6 overall) vs No. 14 Mesilla Valley Christian Son Blazers (14-10 overall)

Preview: The Buffaloes enter the state tournament as a 3-seed and favored big over 14-Mesilla Valley Christian. At 13-1 at home this season the Buffaloes have the odds to move along with ease playing at home on Saturday. Two stars that guide the Buffaloes this season are Dathan Yeary and Josiah Roybal providing them with enough fire power to make a Final Four or State Championship run.

Player to Watch: Michael Cardonita (Melrose) leads the way with 25 points per game this season for the Buffaloes.

Prediction: Melrose 65, Mesilla Valley 48 (Melrose, -20.2)

No. 4 Maxwell Bears (23-4 overall) vs No. 13 Clovis Christian Eagles (18-10 overall)

Preview: Clovis Christian will play tough, and they have do-everything guard Carter Tuene, and look to keep the scoring low. Maxwell will look to push the tempo and put points on the board in a hurry, in the final two weeks of the district season they put up scoring totals of 64, 66, 72, and 87 winning by 20-points or more. This is the first match-up between the schools this season.

Player to Watch: Orren Floyd and Marcelino Romero were both part of the 2020 state championship runner up team and look to cap their senior season with a splash.

Prediction: Maxwell 55, Clovis Christian 48 (Maxwell -6.5)

No. 5 Cliff Cowboys (20-6 overall) vs No. 12 Evangel Christian Academy (19-8 overall)

Preview: The Shock name is back at Cliff. The winning has returned to Cliff. Brian Shock returned as head coach this season and his father legendary head coach Pete Shock as his assistant. They look to guide a 20-win Cowboys team into the state tournament this Saturday against Albuquerque-Evangel Christian Academy. Two stars to that have played well this season for the Cowboys -- Brennan Shock (2026) and Coy Judd (senior).

Player to Watch: Tayson Yost (2025) is a flourish sophomore that will team-up with Shock for the next three years.

Prediction: Cliff 57, Evangel Christian 52 (Cliff, -5.5)

No. 6 Dora Coyotes (20-6 overall) vs No. 11 Alamo Navajo Cougars (23-4 overall)

Preview: The Dora Coyotes enter the post season as a favorite over a visiting Alamo Navajo team that won 23-games this season. Why do we like the Coyotes? It comes in the form of double-double machine Steven Masini who is putting impressive numbers of 26 points and 17 rebounds per game. This is another first time match-up this season.

Player to Watch: Jacob Apache (Alamo Navajo) will lead the Cougars' upset hopes. He leads the team in scoring with 14 per game.

Prediction: Dora 54, Alamo Navajo 51 (Dora, -2.5)

No. 7 Cimarron Rams (18-7 overall) vs No. 10 Des Moines Demons (19-10 overall)

Preview: For the fifth time this season the Rams and Demons will square off. Cimarron, the 7-seed, took three of the four regular season games against the Des Moines Demons this season, only falling in the lone game at Des Moines (66-52) near the end of January. Both teams are averaging over 60 points per game this season and could provide with a score-first atmosphere on Saturday night.

Player to Watch: Des Moines player Caleb Sumpter is averaging 19 points and 9 rebounds per game this season.

Prediction: Des Moines 60, Cimarron 59 (Pick Em) *Upset Alert*

No. 8 Logan Longhorns (17-11 overall) vs No. 9 Legacy Academy Silverbacks (22-5 overall)

Preview: The game that a few has mention as an upset this post season has the Albuquerque-Legacy Academy Silverbacks beating the 8-seed Logan Longhorns. When looking at all-state level players Brock Burns is a name to know in 1A basketball this season -- the junior is averaging 14 points, 4 rebounds, 2 steals, and a block per game (each category leads the team). This is the first meeting between the schools this season.

Player to Watch: Kaden Stoner (2024) is the second part of the Logan duo and is putting in 11 points and 3 rebounds per game this season.

Prediction: Legacy Academy 63, Logan 59 (Legacy, -4.5) *Upset Alert*

Bracket Breakdown

Best Game: (9) Legacy Academy vs (8) Logan
Odds to Upset: (10) Des Moines vs (7) Cimarron
Final Four: (1) Magdalena, (2) Fort Sumner, (3) Melrose, (5) Cliff
State Champ: (2) Fort Sumner. This could be a classic -- Magdalena vs Fort Sumner -- and one of the most anticipated 1A state championship games in my 15 years at NMPreps. I'll take the upset in what could be an upset filled bracket.

5A BASKETBALL

Bracket Breakdown

Best Game: #8 Sandia (21-8) vs #9 Albuquerque (25-2). What a match-up at the 8-9. Both teams featuring next level talent -- Leilani Love (Albuquerque/2023) and Sydney Benally (Sandia/2023).

Best Possible Upset Pick: #5 La Cueva (21-7) vs #12 Mayfield (15-12). We are leaning more on the side of all top seeds rolling today but if there's one coach that could pull the upset its coach Maya at Mayfield.

Final Play: #6 Centennial (20-8) vs #11 Organ Mountain (17-10). Scary first round game for the 6-seed, having to play a district opponent. This will be the fourth game this season, third this month, between the teams.

9-16 Seed to Final Four: Difficult pick. If they can find a way to win in the first round. How can you not like having the best player in the state -- Bella Hines (Eldorado). I would be crazy to pick against Volcano Vista coach Lisa Villarael though. However, Hines is a special player, sort of wild that they are only a 14-seed.

MVP Frontrunner: Bhret Clay (Hobbs). The Eagles will likely have the state championship trophy and the MVP when March 11th hits next week. Clay is another special talent that will be on display for the next week.

Ten Players to Watch
Aspen Salazar - Centennial
Bella Hines - Eldorado
Bhret Clay - Hobbs
Caitlin Turnbow - Organ Mountain
Jordan Dyer - La Cueva
Leilani Love - Albuquerque
Lyric Corona - Mayfield
Mariana Sepulveda - Carlsbad
Sydney Benally - Sandia
Taejhuan Hill - Volcano Vista

Grine Picks
First Round: 1-Hobbs, 2-Farmington, 3-Volcano Vista, 4-Carlsbad, 5-La Cueva, 6-Centennial, 7-Las Cruces, 9-Albuquerque
Quarterfinals: 1-Hobbs, 2-Farmington, 3-Volcano Vista, 4-Carlsbad
Final Four: 1-Hobbs, 3-Volcano Vista
Champ: 1-Hobbs

4A BASKETBALL

Bracket Breakdown

Best Game: #3 St. Pius X (20-5) vs #14 Portales (14-14). Portales is a scary 14-seed for any team. The Rams are a few possessions short of being a 20-win team, dropping a few close games. St. Pius X is having there best season under head coach Brio Rhode.

Upset Pick: #10 Valencia (18-10) at #7 Silver (17-8). Head coach Micaela Medina continues to build Valencia into a solid program after years of sitting dormant. Guard Jadyn Montoya has played very well and could be the spark in the opener.

Final Play: #8 Bloomfield (17-10) vs #9 Highland (16-13). Another game that could have the higher seed win on the road is the Hornets. The teams are evenly matched. Aaliyah Nevarez (Highland) and Danielle Johnson (Bloomfield) will do some work.

Grine Picks
First Round: 1-Kirtland, 2-Gallup, 3-St. Pius X, 4-Hope Christian, 5-Artesia, 6-Los Alamos, 9-Highland, 10-Valencia
Quarterfinals: 1-Kirtland, 2-Gallup, 3-St. Pius X, 4-Hope Christian
Final Four: 1-Kirtland, 2-Gallup
State Champ: 2-Gallup

3A BASKETBALL

Bracket Breakdown

Best Game: #8 Thoreau vs #9 West Las Vegas. This is also the pick when looking for a 9-16 winning in the opening round. West Las Vegas plays in a difficult district and enters the game tested. Lillyanna Martinez leads the team in just about every category (14 ppg, 7 rpg, 3 aspg).

Upset Watch: #11 Crownpoint vs #6 Sandia Prep. Crownpoint took the first meeting between the two team in mid-January. It'll be tough to beat Prep again but this is a tough drawl for the Sundevils.

Final Play: #7 St. Michael's vs #10 Zuni. The Thunderbirds will be taking a three hour bus ride to Santa Fe for the contest and will be thinking upset. St. Michael's has enough talent and depth but the player that makes them go is freshman Mariella Ruiz.

Grine's Picks
First Round: 1-Robertson, 2-Navajo Prep, 3-SFIS, 4-Tohatchi, 5-Tucumcari, 6-Sandia Prep, 7-St. Mikes, 9-West Las Vegas
Quarterfinals: 1-Robertson, 2-Navajo Prep, 3-SFIS, 4-Tohatchi
Finals: 1-Robertson, 2-Navajo Prep
State Champ: 2-Navajo Prep
