State Preview & Predictions: 4A First Round
NMPreps guide to the 2023 New Mexico high school basketball state tournament. #nmpreps
No. 1 Albuquerque Academy Chargers (23-3 overall) vs No. 16 Goddard Rockets (13-15 overall)
Preview: Albuquerque Academy returned the core of players who engineered last seasons quarterfinals appearance -- that experience has propelled the Chargers into the 1-seed. Featuring the trio of Kellan Gehres (2023), Dillon McCleskey (2024), and forward Joe Jack (2024) have the masses picking the Chargers to make the final day. After starting the season 3-8 the Goddard Rockets finished the heart of the season 10-5, earning the final spot in the tournament. Rhett Price (2023) put in steady numbers this season with averages of 11 points and 8 rebounds per game. The two teams met the first week of December, Academy winning 65-47.
Prediction: Albuquerque 60, Goddard 51
No. 2 Highland Hornets (20-7 overall) vs No. 15 Pojoaque Valley Elks (16-11 overall)
Preview: Highland head coach Justin Woody continues to keep the Hive at the top of the 4A basketball scene. The Hornets are averaging 66 points per game this season but they are not shy to share the ball (over 17 per) and controlling the boards (over 31 per). Alexis Dominguez (2023), Brandon Medina (2023), and Jesus Licon (2025) lead a deep roster of contributors. Dominguez averages 19 points, 4 rebounds, and 4 assists per game. For the Elks they'll ride on the shooting of Derek Sanchez, he sits near the top of the scoring ranks with a 25 points per game average. This is the first meeting between the schools.
Prediction: Highland 71, Pojoaque 56
No. 3 St. Pius X Sartans (18-9 overall) vs No. 14 Silver Fighting Colts (17-10 overall)
Preview: St. Pius' best this season has been really impressive and reminiscent of some of the Damian Segura title teams. Now, it's head coach Ryan Myers guiding the Sartans into the playoffs and on the hunt for another Final Four run, maybe more. Chris Coash (2023), Brian Kalb (2023), and Gene Trujillo (2023) create a crowded paint for opposing teams and should be a factor in this match up. Silver, winners of 8 of the last 9 games, has hopes of an upset after traveling over 4 hours for the game on Saturday. This is the first meeting between the teams this season.
Prediction: St. Pius X 58, Silver 47
No. 4 Artesia Bulldogs (18-9 overall) vs No. 13 Valencia Jaguars (13-15 overall)
Preview: Now the radar starts. No, as you can scroll to down, we are not taking Valencia over Artesia. However, don't be shocked if they keep it low in scoring and tight throughout the start of the game. Jaguars head coach Jesse Hathoot has resurged the Valencia program and forward Ali Abdullah is better post player than what the Bulldogs have seen since district play started.
The Bulldogs, guided by coach Michael Mondragon, are a lock to have their one of the best post season runs. They featuring scoring in the form of All-New Mexico level guard Nick Sanchez (2023). They feature solid inside play from Rylee Jarratt (2023). It'll be close but the Dogs should win.
Prediction: Artesia 45, Valencia 42
No. 5 Gallup Bengals (21-7 overall) vs No. 12 Valley Vikings (13-14 overall)
Preview: The classic 5-12 game, considered the upset game to pick, solely based on the numbers. Well, we haven't seen a 12 over a 5 since 2019 (Del Norte over Espanola). What do the numbers say this season? Gallup, winners of 20 games (11 of the final 12), something that coach Josh Dunlap is consistent at doing is getting to 20 wins. The Bengals are averaging over 70-points per game this season, in the last ten games that number is closer to 80. The Valley fanbase is solid, when they show up, but the Gallup atmosphere will be something new for the Vikings.
Valley had to battle through the toughest district in the state with the likes of Academy, Hope, and Del Norte on a nightly bases. Julian Chavez (2024) and Tyler Kozlowski (2024) mentioned throughout the season and they are the reason that you would consider taking them as an upset team.
Prediction: Gallup 65, Valley 57
No. 6 Hope Christian Huskies (18-10 overall) vs No. 11 Kirtland Central Broncos (18-9 overall)
Preview: Hope Christian hasn't made it to the quarterfinals round since 2020 -- yes, that's a long time for the Huskies program. Well, this season they have the scoring and next level play of 6-3 wing Jett Wyckoff (2023) who could be the most known name come Final Four weekend. The Kirtland Central Broncos built a solid resume this season and in large part to the scoring of Satchel Hogue (2023) who reached the 1,000 points career milestone. The Huskies should win but the Broncos will be well coached and ready.
Prediction: Hope Christian 65, Kirtland Central 59
No. 7 Taos Tigers (17-10 overall) vs No. 10 Portales (17-11 overall)
Preview: Perhaps the game to watch in the opening round if you like potential upsets. The Tigers have been a team fighting uphill but falling short or on the wrong side of upsets in their last two trips to state. In, 2020 they lost as an 8-seed to the 9-seed and last season they lost as the 2-seed to a 7-seed. Can they avoid it this season? That could ride on the shoulders of big man Daemon Ely (2023) who is putting in All-New Mexico numbers with 24 points and 14 rebounds per game.
Like his father, Randy McBroom, will have watched more film than just about any coach this week -- don't be surprised if he knows what Taos had for lunch all week. That means, Portales will be ready and will throw everything at the Tigers in this game. Two reasons to like the Rams this post season sit in the frontcourt with Xodus Gomez (2023) and Davian Lucero (2023).
Prediction: Portales 61, Taos 59 *Upset Alert*
No. 8 Deming Wildcats (18-11 overall) vs No. 9 Del Norte Knights (15-12 overall)
Preview: The match up that any top-8 seed wants to avoid -- Del Norte. The Knights have won as the higher seed more than any other 4A program. Under head coach Jerron McIntosh the Knights are considered the most dangerous team in March. That should remain the same this state tournament with 2021 New Mexico Mr. Basketball Shane Douma-Sanchez making his final tournament appearance. The Knights guard has had one of the most outstanding careers and definitely one of the names to remember.
Hey! Yes, we didn't forget about the home team, the 8-seed, the Deming Wildcats. Alexander Alfaro (2023) is the name to know, if they escape the Knights in the opening round. Alfaro is averaging 21 points and 12 rebounds per game along with 3 steals per. After winning the district championship the Wildcats are looking to make a statement in the first round.
Prediction: Del Norte 64, Deming 55 *Upset Aler*
