Feature NMPreps Friday Night Preview

NORTH

Tune in tomorrow.

SOUTH

We head to Las Cruces for a bubble match-up. Las Cruces struggling to a 1-4 season, a tough non-district schedule, hopes to turn things up as we enter October, aka District season. Alamogordo (3-3) much improved this season hoping to add a signature win to their resume and increasing their chances at a 2022 post season bid.

Other games taking place: Chaparral (0-6) plays host to El Paso-Cathedral (TX) who is playing their second of three games in New Mexico this season.

SOUTHEAST

The game of the week is expected to have over 15,000 fans on hand as the No. 6 Hobbs Eagles take on the No. 3 Centennial Hawks. Hobbs enters the contest with a perfect 6-0 record and looking to make claim for a district title shot. Centennial sits at 4-1 on the season and spent time ranked number one in the NMPreps weekly team rankings.

Keep an eye on some Hobbs next level prospects in Kenyon Singleton (2023) and Omar Argott (2023) in this one. Singleton is quietly becoming a top name to know with 80 total tackles on the year. The dynamic duo of Daniel Hernandez (2023/QB) and Mikah Gutierrez (2023/RB) continues to lead Centennial; they accounted for 7 touchdowns in their last game, a win over Organ Mountain.

All eyes are on the southeast corner tonight as we have the 2A showdown between No. 1 Jal (7-0) and No. 2 Eunice (5-1). Bragging rights in the southeast corner has belonged to Eunice but Jal is hoping to make it the year of the Panther. Jal has two players that are next level ready in Alexavier Carreon (2023) and Jacob Lujan (2023).

Other games taking place: Clovis (1-6) looks to make it two in a row as they host Santa Fe (1-5). NMMI (4-3) and Ruidoso (6-1) deserves some love, although Ruidoso should move along with ease behind studs like Kaden Sago, Cooper Pritchett, Dalton Trapp, and Gavon Hall.

CENTRAL

Must-see 4A football taking place at Socorro High School between No. 1 Bloomfield (6-0) and No. 3 Silver (5-1). Aidan Granado (2023) for Silver and Ryan Sharpe (2023) for Bloomfield take center stage in this battle for the 1-seed.

In Albuquerque we will have Cibola (6-0) look to remain perfect as they take on neighbor Volcano Vista (5-2). Cibola is ranked a spot back at No. 5, VV at No. 4. Two of the top-5 quarterbacks in the state will square off in Elliot Pasket-Bell (VV) and Aidan Chavez (Cibola).

Other games: Sandia (3-3) continues it's post season hopes and will look to beat a struggling Eldorado (1-6) squad. In 5A Highland (4-1) will look to flex on a winless Pojoaque Valley (0-5) squad. In 4A football Moriarty (4-2) has to avoid a let down against a 1-5 St. Pius X Sartans team.

Feature Week 8: Thursday Night Preview

Thursday Night Preview

NMPreps Thursday night game previews in New Mexico high school football. #nmpreps

Carlsbad Cavemen (3-3) at Organ Mountain Knights (3-3), 7pm

Scoop: Believe it or not the playoffs start in just over 3 weeks from now. This game could determine which team will be playing in November. The line is close with Carlsbad being a (-2.5) favorite over Organ Mountain. A name that has started to shine is Carlsbad RB Eli Asay (2023), coming off a 191-rushing yards and 4-rushing TD night during week 7. On defense watch Fabian Lozoya (2023) is a top-50 player in the state and will be the x-factor for the Knights.

Farmington Scorpions (2-4) at West Mesa Mustangs (3-3), 7pm

Scoop: Yes, another playoff talk game with this District II contest. The Farmington Scorpions make the trip back to the Albuquerque area as they look to keep their post-season hopes alive. Currently sitting at the 9-seed the Scorpions are looking to earn another signature win after being on a bye last week. They had a strong September showing and looking to open district play with a bang taking on a bubble team in West Mesa. The Mustangs were tested last week against Sandia and came out with a 21-14 win improving their playoff hopes. What this game features is a match up between two of the top quarterbacks in New Mexico although they differ in style -- Trel Griego (2024) for Farmington and Elijah Brody (2023) for West Mesa.

Lordsburg Mavericks (5-0) at Alamo Navajo Cougars (0-5), 6pm

Scoop: The Mavericks are putting up 48 points per game this season and coming off, perhaps the biggest win of the season beating Melrose, 46-32. Lordsburg's Jeremy Valdez (2023) has a stellar showing in that game. Alamo Navajo at 0-5 has struggled to score this season being shutout four times this season.

Valencia Jaguars (1-5) at Rio Grande Ravens (1-4), 7pm

Scoop: After going 0-4 during September the Valencia Jaguars are hoping for more wins as the weather cools down. September had plenty of positives though as a close loss to 5A Gadsden (20-13), last week, along with a 28-22 (OT) loss to 5A Santa Teresa provides the moral victories. It keeps the playoff hopes alive for the 4A bubble team and chance to play for the district championship on October 28th (vs Silver). Rio Grande, 6A independent, is coming off a 22-20 (OT) win over Del Norte.

What To Watch

We have a pair of games that scream bubble or playoff talk. Carlsbad and Organ Mountain are playing for their November fate tonight. Farmington and West Mesa are doing the same over at Community Stadium. Reminder from yesterday's playoff picture - Farmington (#9), Carlsbad (#11), Organ Mountain (#12), and West Mesa sitting on the outside.

Players to Watch

Jeremy Valdez, Sr., Lordsburg HS.
The senior has led the Mavericks to a perfect 5-0 record this season. Valdez does it under center hitting targets as quarterback or keeping it as a rushing threat.

Coaches must be teaching the right things.

This morning at Balloon Fiesta Park I saw several metro area high school football teams hanging out. Each team was hanging out together. I saw teams from La Cueva, Cibola, Eldorado, Volcano, Rio Rancho and a few others.

What stood out was how they all stood at attention when the national anthem was played at 7am this morning. They were not all together but close enough where I could see most of the schools.

The other thing I noticed was that most of them had on their letterman jackets and were dressed appropriately. They were well behaved. I used to see kids like this acting stupid before. None of these kids I saw acted out of the ordinary. It was noticable to my balloon team. I don't bring it up in my group. A lady on my team from Wyoming brought it up.

It was cool to see. I know parents have a lot to do with this but coaches do to.

Coaches need to hear about their kids publicly and be thanked. So thank you coaches for teaching these young athletes how to be young men.
