New Mexico HS Football Friday Night Preview

NMPreps weekly guide to New Mexico high school football. Today, we look at the Friday night preview of games. #nmpreps

6A FOOTBALL

Cleveland Storm (4-1) at Frenship (TX) Tigers (3-1):
Cleveland offense and Frenship defense appear to be the headline. Cleveland D has improved as of late and look for the names Stratton Shufelt (2024), Chuka Tutman (2024), and Isaac Medrano (2023) to shine against tonight. X-factors Javis Garcia (2023) and Angel Rodrgiuez (2023). 6-2 MLB Ethan Curbo (2023) and 6-4 DT Isaiah Kema (2023) guide the Frenship defense.

Eldorado Eagles (1-4) at Volcano Vista Hawks (4-1): The Eldorado Eagles earned a win last week, their first of the season. Senior do-all Mark Pacheco will look to lead the Eagles again as they look to upset Volcano Vista. Pacheco had 55-total tackles on the season. Volcano Vista has a top offense behind Elliot Pasket-Bell (2023) a quarterback that has over 800-yards passing and 400-yards rushing. Supporting cast members Alijah Gonzalez (2024), Tristan Cordova (2023), and Isaiah Crespin (2023) could shine tonight.

Organ Mountain Knights (3-2) at Centennial Hawks (3-1): Battle of Las Cruces now turns to the Knights and Hawks. Organ Mountain a team playing for their post season bid will look to Christian Valenzuela (2023), Juan Garcia (2023), and Fabian Lozoya (2023) in the upset opportunity. Centennial a favorite and contender for the 6A title will look to top RB Mikah Gutierrez. Gutierrez has several games over 100-yards rushing and the spark to this offense.

Rio Rancho Rams (3-2) at Farmington Scorpions (2-3): Perhaps the best 6A contest to watch that is taking place in New Mexico on Friday night puts two middle tier squads against each other. Rio Rancho enters the game after suffering a loss last week that ended a three game win streak for them. They (RR) continues to search for an offensive answer. Farmington has played well in the last three weeks going 2-1 -- the lone loss to Cibola in the final minutes. Look for the Trel Griego (2023/QB) and Michael Beck (2023/WR) connection in this game.

Roswell Coyotes (4-1) at Clovis Wildcats (0-5): Roswell is on a quest for the 1-seed in the 5A bracket while Clovis undergoes a rebuild this season. The Coyotes have quarterback Manny Fuentez (2024) a prospect that has gone under the radar but should be on the final list of top players this season. Kash Roberts (2024) and Jett Stone (2024) are the names to know for Clovis and will be part of the rebuild into next season...and district play.

Sandia Matadors (2-2) at Manzano Monarchs (0-4): Malachi Thymes (2023) is the big name in this contest and the Sandia Matadors should move along with ease. Thymes is rushing for over 150-yards per game and could light up the end zone this weekend.

5A FOOTBALL

Artesia Bulldogs (3-2) at Lovington Wildcats (0-5):
It doesn't get any easier for Lovington as they look to break into the win column this season. Next, is the high powered offense of the Artesia Bulldogs. The offensive attack is lead by quarterback Nye Estrada and his targets in Peyton Greathouse (2024), Devyn Fierro (2023), and Nick Sanchez (2023). For Lovington it is Ashton Aranda (2023) guiding the way for the Wildcats under center.

Deming Wildcats (2-3) at Silver Colts (5-0): The battle in the southeast corner has some interest to it. This has the potential to be one of the better games in the state this season. Keep a close eye on a hard hitting game between teams that are gearing up for a playoff push. Silver RB Aidan Granado (2023) is a name to become familiar with for the undefeated Colts.

Gadsden Panthers (1-4) at Goddard Rockets (3-2): One team is on the hunt for the first playoff bid -- Gadsden. The other is looking to reclaim their spot in the top four of the class. The Gadsden offense has improved throughout the season as they look to battle in their district and ultimately a playoff bid. Goddard coming off a loss to Piedra Vista last week has already beat two members of the Gadsden district in Deming (28-13) and Santa Teresa (19-3).

Moriarty Pintos (4-1) at Miyamura Patriots (1-4): We have a 5A/4A contest taking place in Gallup with the host Miyamura Patriots taking on the Moriarty Pintos. The Pintos look to their four backs in Santiago Chavez (2024), Michael Magoffe (2023), Matthew Romero (2023), and Amare Gonzales (2024). All four have over 200-yards rushing with Chavez leading the way at 450 on the season. Ciyllis Cole-Ray (2023) leads Miyamura rush attack with 473-total yards and 6-touchdowns this season through five games.

Mountain View (TX) Lobos (3-1) at Santa Teresa Desert Warriors (3-2): Another must-see NM vs Texas game taking place at the boarder on Friday night. Newcomers Jack Bumgardner (2024) and Angel Hernandez (2023) is a solid duo for the Desert Warriors this season. Hernandez has nearly 700-yards rushing and 9-touchdowns on the season.

Rio Grande (0-4) at Del Norte (0-5): Perhaps not the headline of the weekend but it will be a special night ending it with a win for one of these two programs. Both projected to drop the rest of the games, this one could be the one to celebrate. Alejandro Quintana (2025) played well earlier in the season and could have a solid night.

Feature Thursday Night Preview

Thursday Night Preview

NMSD (2-1) at Alamo Navajo (0-4):
Freshman Santiago Lopez has over 250-yards passing and another 140 yards rushing in two of the wins for New Mexico School for the Deaf. Alamo Navajo has struggled this season as they have given up over 260 points on the season. Early pick is NMSD scores early and pulls away. Prediction.

Hope Christian (2-2-1) at Highland (2-1): A pair of teams that need to build their resume for a playoff spot. Hope Christian had a rebound win over Grants (35-7) last week after suffering a pair of losses. Senior Brent Miller has 150 yards passing and 250 rushing on the season for the Huskies. Sophomore Alex Lopez has played well for the Hornets in a win last week with 228 all purpose yards, 3 rushing touchdowns and a passing touchdown. Prediction.

Capital (3-2) at Atrisco Heritage (4-1): With the final spots of the 2022 playoff bids up for grabs the Capital Jaguars and Atrisco Heritage Jaguars are fighting for their post season fate. Both teams feature newcomers to the scene and entering the game coming off a win. Capital features the Munoz brothers -- older brother Julian leading from under center with over 300-yards passing and 230-yards rushing for a total of 5-touchdowns. Atrisco is off a 59-point performance and averaging over 50-points in the last four games, all wins. Quarterback Dean Marquez (2024) has over 1330 yards passing and will look to a quad of receivers in Latavious Morries (2025), Manny Sedillo (2023), Marquise Renfro (2024), and Diego Winnikoff (2023). All four receivers have over 200-yards receiving on the season. Prediction.

Belen (1-4) at Mayfield (2-3): Both teams are hurting for a win before we get into the October slate of games. Belen is coming off three consecutive losses by a combined score of 142-29. Mayfield is also on a three game skid being outscored 112-19. Mayfield features Anthony Carrillo (2023/QB) and Diego Guerro (2023/RB). For the Eagles Derian Rodriguez guides the run attack with 317-yards and 3-touchdowns. Prediction.

Animas (2-2) at Jemez Valley (1-1): The Animas Panthers are looking for some consistency after splitting their opening games. Wins over Grady (59-33) and Floyd (64-12) helped a young, inexperienced roster; losses to Mountainair (55-0) and Dora (57-26) proved the youth. Jemez Valley has a similar start as they are in their first year back playing football. The Warriors have a roster built on underclassmen but riding high off a win last week. Prediction.

What happened to Clovis?

I graduated in the class of 2008 from Hobbs high and all throughout my childhood, Clovis was always in discussion as being a State Championship contender. Especially the small rivalry they developed with Mayfield throughout the 2000’s. I’ve heard that a lot of key players transferred away during the pandemic? Not sure how true that is. I am also aware we live in different times and every program is going to have their set back but I am not use to this. It seems like Hobbs and Clovis has swapped places over the last 2-3 seasons
