Movement: Cleveland dropped from #7 in week eight to #9 this week. They have five straight, three last week to La Cueva, Sandia, and Hobbs. Sandia and Cleveland flipped spots this week. No other big or "bad" losses this week for the top-12. Los Lunas fell on the road to Hobbs but that's it, they'll stay at 11.

1. Jal (9-2)
2. Hagerman (10-0)

New: Dora (8). Legacy Academy (12) | Dropped: Logan (9), Des Moines (10) | Next: Coronado (7-6)

Movement: We have some movement since our week seven rankings. Legacy Academy joins the top-12 with a win over Fort Sumner. Dora is new and another team that could be a threat to reach the second round. Magdalena is the real deal and as of now we are looking for the team that could face them in the state championship game.

Team Rankings New Mexico HS Basketball Rankings - Week 8

5A BASKETBALL - TOP 12

9. Sandia (7-6)
10. Farmington (15-1)
11. Los Lunas (8-7)
12. Carlsbad (14-3)

Scoop: The big mover this week is Los Lunas as they beat Carlsbad in a close 45-43 contest. Sandia is healthy again and on a three game win streak redeeming some earlier losses.

4A BASKETBALL - TOP 12

1. Highland (8-3)
2. Valley (8-5)
3. Hope Christian (8-6)
4. Belen (10-5)

10. Silver (17-2)
11. Del Norte (5-8)
12. Goddard (7-8)

Scoop: 4A basketball is a bag of mixed emotions. Think of it as the party pack of candy. Any night a different team could take the win depending on the roster make-up. They are all beating each other. March is going to be intriguing.....if we get there.

3A BASKETBALL - TOP 12

1. Raton (9-2)
2. Sandia Prep (5-9)
3. Socorro (10-4)
4. Robertson (8-5)

7. Bosque (7-3)
8. Santa Fe Indian (7-5)
9 Crownpoint (8-5)
10. West Las Vegas (7-4)
11. Hot Springs (7-5)
12. Cottonwood Classical (5-7)

Updated 1/13/22
Scoop: Plenty of movement. Bosque dropped two games since the last rankings (Santa Fe Prep & St. Mikes). Socorro was upset by Cottonwood Classical last night. Raton is the new number one team. St. Mikes has it's athletes and sticking true to the "what have you done for me lately" this team is back to form or getting to where we expected them to be this preseason. Thoreau dropped out of the rankings after falling to Newcomb in their last game. Cottonwood makes a huge leap into the top-12.

2A Basketball - TOP 12

1. Jal (9-2)
2. Hagerman (10-0)
3. Rehoboth Christian (8-1)
4. Pecos (8-6)
5. Estancia (7-2)
6. Menaul (8-3)
7. Escalante (10-4)
8. Tularosa (9-2)
9. Dulce (9-5)
10. Texico (6-5)
11. Penasco (8-5)
12. Mescalero Apache (7-5)

Update: 1/13/22

Scoop: More movement here and another classification that will await more players returning from being out on protocols. However, we could have up to 10 teams vying for a title.

New Mexico High School Football Preseason Team Rankings for 2022

NMPreps will take a look at each team in New Mexico high school football leading up to the 2022 season. #nmpreps

ATRISCO HERITAGE JAGUARS

City: Albuquerque, NM
2021 Record: 2-7 overall, 0-5 district
2021 Playoffs: Missed
Head Coach: Howard Knezevich
NMPreps 6A Preseason Rank: #18 (of 21)
NMPreps Top-40 Preseason Rank: Unranked (of 121)

Scoop: Despite a 2-7 record the Atrisco Heritage Jaguars are on the rise. They will again have to battle in the very difficult District 1-6A with the likes of Cibola, Rio Rancho, Volcano Vista, and Cleveland. The offensive numbers improved slightly after scoring 92-points in 2020 to 117 in in 2021. The numbers appear to be there but they will need to get size in order to protect their balanced attack.

Players: Dean Marquez (2024) returns under center for the Jaguars after passing for 519-yards and 3 touchdowns as a sophomore. Marquise Renfro (2024) rushed for 136-yards in seven games and reached the end zone two times for what was a very young team. Renfro averaged 6.8 yards per carry, he also had 303-receiving yards with a touchdown to lead to the team. The defense takes a hit losing three of their main starters and it'll be Renfro again as the leader with 30-total tackles last season. Emmanual Martinez (2023) and Judah Nichols (2025) will also bring some veteran experience on defense. Nichols a 6'0 freshman during the 2021 season held his own in the limited action he seen and earned a sack in each game he played.

Early Prediction: 2-8 overall. It'll be sometime until APS releases their schedule even though they are complete. 2 wins is likely again depending on their non-district slate of games. Hopefully we will be able to see them compete in non-district against the likes of Albuquerque, West Mesa, Valley and others at their level. Final word - Head coach Knezevich is doing a great job and I hope he continues to battle with them for years to come.

New Mexico High School Football Preseason Team Rankings for 2022

NMPreps will take a look at each team in New Mexico high school football leading up to the 2022 season. #nmpreps

ALAMOGORDO TIGERS

Town: Alamogordo, NM
2021 Record: 2-8 overall, 0-3 district
2021 Playoffs: Missed
Head Coach: AJ Cisco
NMPreps 6A Preseason Rank: #19 (of 21)
NMPreps Top-40 Preseason Rank: Unranked (of 121)

Scoop: The Alamogordo Tigers are coming off 2-wins in 2021 and now make the transition back to 6A football from 5A. Head coach AJ Cisco has done a great job at building the Tigers from playing in the toughest 5A football district to now playing in the highest enrollment classification. The Tigers join the 6A southern district with the likes of Las Cruces, Hobbs, Carlsbad, Centennial, and Organ Mountain. Las Cruces and Centennial have been at the top of district and battle come the post season and Alamogordo will look for its place among the other three programs. It could take both years in the new alignment block to get them back battling for a playoff spot.

Players: The Tigers graduate plenty of starters from last season and for a team that is more 70% run than pass you will quickly turn to Damon Mayberry (2023). Mayberry rushed for 247-yards on 42 carries (5.9 average) last season. He should see an increase in carries and yards next season. Essentially it was a grounded backfield with five backs getting near 30 carries or more and leading rusher Joshua Sanchez graduating in 2022. Perhaps the strength of the Tigers will be in the form of the linebacker core. They return all three starters in Ryan Stovall (2023), Devaun Herrera-Hamilton (2023), and Mayberry. Stovall, 6-foot-2, is a name to know as he led the team in total tackles with 59 along with a 2 sacks and an interception. Special teams looks to top ranked kicker Brayden Money (2023) who had 31-points scored last season which led the team and went 22 of 24 of PATs; He had a 45 yard FG hit in 2022.

Early Prediction: 2-8 overall, 0-5 district. We don't know the non-district schedule for most teams although games have been scheduled. The Tigers will need to get wins during district play but don't count out head coach AJ Cisco either. I wouldn't be surprised if they upset a team in district play.
