Grine's NMPreps Bracket Projections

Oh boy, 6A football is going to be a fun watch over the next four weeks! The bubble has taken on a huge role in determining who will secure the final four, maybe five or six, spots in the 6A bracket. We can all agree on the top three teams—La Cueva, Centennial, and Cleveland—though Cleveland faces a tough road ahead with two Group 1 At-Large teams in their District 1-6A: Volcano Vista and their rival Rio Rancho. Also in that group is Las Cruces from District 3-6A, who will look to challenge Centennial, the story of the season.

Group 2 features Los Lunas (2-6A) and Hobbs (3-6A), who are not guaranteed locks and could be considered in Group 3, or as we’ve labeled it, the Bubble. Now, the Bubble is quite big as we head into the heart of district play—Carlsbad, Albuquerque, Farmington, and Eldorado claimed the final spots this week.

Here’s how the "OUT" teams stand: Piedra Vista beat Sandia, Sandia beat Cibola, Alamogordo beat Piedra Vista, Albuquerque beat Alamogordo. Cibola beat Albuquerque, West Mesa lacks a 6A win, Eldorado beat Organ Mountain and Cibola, Carlsbad beat Cibola, and Organ Mountain beat Alamogordo.

Grine's 5A Playoff Projections and Soapbox: Breaking Down 5A Football

The 5A bracket should have no more than 10 playoff teams, especially with only 16 teams in the classification. As I step onto my soapbox, I believe there should be a bylaw in the NMAA playoffs that limits the percentage of teams allowed to make the playoffs. If there are only 15 teams in a classification, fewer teams should qualify.

Okay, back to the feature. I’ve tried to argue that a team from District 1-5A should be in the top four, but I’m done doing so. Now, I contend that perhaps seven of the top eight teams will come from District 2-5A. Seeds 9 to 12 will come from 2-5A as well. We gave district leader Los Alamos one of the top eight seeds this week, placing them at No. 9, with Highland holding the edge for now.

Miyamura beat Belen, Belen beat Valley, and Valley beat Miyamura. How can Capital join the group? We’ll have to wait until they play them over the next three to four weeks. Santa Teresa is in the mix for fun, and if they can upset one of the others in their district, they could steal a playoff spot.

4A FOOTBALL

4A Football: Bloomfield and District 1-4A Running The Show

Like my shout from the rooftop in 5A football, with only 15 teams in 4A, there should be no more than 8 or 10 teams making the state playoffs. Or, go the complete opposite way and allow all teams to make the playoffs, giving them one more game in a playoff atmosphere. In 4A football, I’ll make the bold prediction that it’s Bloomfield’s title to lose—I pick them over the field.

Bernalillo is tough, but I would have liked them more had they put some distance between themselves and Española Valley, unless I’m not giving the Sundevils enough credit. St. Pius X and Manzano are the current favorites in District 2-4A, but Portales will linger around. We only featured 14 of 15 teams, leaving off the mess that is Aztec.

The biggest surprise at this point in the season, as district play really heats up, is Albuquerque Academy sitting at 14. That loss to Chaparral was a shocker. Teams in our At-Large Group 2 will fight for the final home playoff spot and the 8-seed, with Valencia holding the edge at the moment over Grants and Moriarty.

The big question is, will District 1-4A get seeds 1-3? We currently have St. Pius X at No. 3, but will Española Valley jump them? Imagine Española Valley and Bernalillo with top-four seeds—times sure have changed.

3A FOOTBALL
3A Bracket.png

3A Football: A Potential Repeat of the 2023 State Championship Game in 2024

St. Michael's, Robertson, and Dexter are currently the favorites to win the championship in this classification, with the northern schools—St. Michael's and Robertson—seemingly on a collision course for a repeat of the 2023 state championship game. Dexter, however, is a sneaky talented squad. Yes, they’re undefeated and ranked No. 3, but they’ve shown some vulnerability in games against West Las Vegas and Grants, which keeps them out of the top-two conversation.

New Mexico Military, Socorro, and West Las Vegas fall into the next tier of teams and might be considered sleepers. Pojoaque, benefiting from their drop to 3A, sits at 4-1 overall, and we have them as the 7-seed. They lead our Group 2 along with Hatch Valley, Hope Christian, and Hot Springs—two of these teams will secure a home playoff game.

Thoreau is a district champion, but we have them at No. 11. It would be a shame to place them in the top eight, especially after their loss to Hot Springs. Cobre holds the final seed, but Tohatchi, the runner-up in Thoreau's district, could steal that spot. We’ve listed Ruidoso and Crownpoint, but their playoff hopes are hanging by a very thin thread.

2A FOOTBALL
2A Bracket.png

2A Football: Texico Creating Separation for a 2024 Repeat

The defending state champion Texico Wolverines were projected in the preseason to take a step back after their 2023 title, but it appears they are in prime shape to repeat in 2024. Eunice remains solid and is our top contender, setting up the possibility of a rematch.

District 2-2A forms our second tier, with district leaders Legacy Academy and Santa Rosa holding the No. 3 and No. 4 seeds. Loving, from the Texico/Eunice district, is another strong contender.

Raton hangs on to Group 1 but is coming off two tough losses to 3A powers Robertson and St. Michael's, which may have them battle-tested for District 2. McCurdy is the favorite to win District 1 and currently holds the 8-seed.

The bubble has Estancia IN with the final playoff spot, but Laguna-Acoma could steal that slot. While we respect that Estancia played a tough schedule, having only one win might keep them out in favor of a Laguna-Acoma team that could finish with four wins.

Grine's Saturday Morning Coffee: NMPreps Week 7 Friday Night Recap

Friday night in New Mexico high school football was everything fans hoped for—overtime thrillers, dramatic upsets, and playoff implications looming large. As we sip on this Saturday morning coffee, let's dive into the action and highlight some of the night’s most exciting games.

FRIDAY NIGHT THRILLERS

First Cheers: Mayfield Stuns Lovington.
No. 20 Mayfield (3-4, 2-2 District 2-5A) took to the road and delivered a gritty performance, upsetting the No. 8 Lovington Wildcats (5-2, 2-2 District 2-5A) in a high-octane affair. The Trojans found themselves trailing 30-22 at halftime but clawed their way back to secure a 50-49 victory. Mayfield's dual-threat quarterback, Luke Linnan, led the charge with 150 yards on the ground and a rushing touchdown, while also adding 150 passing yards and 2 touchdowns through the air. This win snaps Lovington’s hot start to the season, marking their second straight loss after a 5-0 run.

Second Cheers: Carlsbad’s Heartbreak in Overtime. In 6A, the No. 17 Carlsbad Cavemen (3-4, 1-1 District 3-6A) suffered a crushing 41-40 overtime loss to No. 21 Organ Mountain (3-4, 2-1 District 3-6A) in a game that could have major playoff implications. The back-and-forth contest ended with Knights quarterback Xavier Perez connecting with Lennis Washington on an 11-yard touchdown pass, followed by Estevan Belmontes’ successful extra point. Carlsbad, needing only a PAT to extend the game, missed their attempt, allowing the Knights to secure a pivotal district win.

Third Cheers: Valencia Survives Chaparral’s Upset Bid. In Class 4A, playoff talk is heating up, and the Valencia Jaguars (5-2, 2-1 District 2-4A) kept their postseason hopes alive with a thrilling 52-44 overtime victory over Chaparral. Lobos (2-5, 1-2 District 2-4A) quarterback Raul Lopez rushed for a game-tying three-yard touchdown in the final minute of regulation but came up short on a two-point conversion attempt, leaving the score tied at 44-44. In overtime, Valencia's Michael Storms III punched in a rushing touchdown, and Dalton Muzzy’s successful two-point conversion sealed the win for the Jaguars.

RAPID FIRE

Quick look at more headlines from Friday night.

Hot Springs Slips in a Nail-Biter:
Hot Springs (3-3, 0-2 District 3-3A) aimed to keep their season momentum alive, but fell just short in a 29-28 loss to Hatch Valley (4-3, 1-2 District 3-3A). After leading midway through the game, the Tigers couldn’t hold on as the Bears rallied for a key district win.

Tucumcari Stuns Estancia:
In 2A, Tucumcari (2-4, 1-0 District 2-2A) pulled off a shocking 48-47 victory over winless Estancia (0-6, 0-1), keeping their playoff hopes alive. This upset win could have serious playoff implications for the Rattlers as the season progresses.

Del Norte Gets in the Win Column:
Del Norte (1-6, 1-3 District 1-5A) finally notched their first win of the season, edging Rio Grande (0-6, 0-4 District 1-5A) in a 21-19 victory. The Knights fought hard to break their winless streak, giving their season a spark.

Valley’s Dual-QB Attack:
Two quarterbacks proved better than one for Valley (2-5, 2-2 District 1-5A), as both Julian Butkivich and Jose Jaramillo threw two touchdowns each to lead the Vikings to a 25-12 win over Capital (2-5, 2-2 District 1-5A).

La Cueva Flexes Dominance:
Top-ranked La Cueva (6-0, 3-0 District 2-6A) showcased why they’re the 6A favorite with a commanding 56-7 win over Eldorado (3-3, 1-2 District 2-6A). Bears quarterback Cameron Dyer threw three touchdowns as La Cueva continued their march toward a title.

Los Alamos Rallies for the Win:
Los Alamos (4-3, 4-0 District 1-5A) pulled off a thrilling comeback to beat Belen (2-4, 2-2 District 1-5A), 36-34. Trailing 27-14 with just four minutes left in the third quarter, quarterback Kyle Evenhaus hit Jesus Diaz on a 53-yard touchdown pass before rushing for the game-winning score with 24 seconds remaining.

Rio Rancho Shuts Out Cibola:
On a night when former Rio Rancho head coach David Howes, now an assistant with Cibola, was inducted into the RRPS Hall of Fame, No. 6 Rio Rancho (4-2, 1-0 District 1-6A) delivered a 28-0 shutout win over No. 25 Cibola (2-4, 0-1 District 1-6A). Rams ATH Micah Takahashi had two passing touchdowns and one rushing touchdown, leading the team to victory.

Volcano Vista's Henson Hits 300:
No. 4 Volcano Vista (5-1, 1-0 District 1-6A) quarterback Ilijah Henson threw for over 300 yards in their 48-7 win over No. 23 Piedra Vista (1-5, 0-1 District 1-6A). Henson continues to be one of the top performers in the state.

Gallup Snaps a Nine-Game Skid:
Gallup (1-6, 1-2 District 1-3A) finally broke their nine-game losing streak dating back to last season with a 46-12 win over Zuni (2-4, 1-1 District 1-3A), giving the Bengals something to celebrate on Friday night.

Dexter Makes a Statement:
Dexter (7-0, 3-0 District 3-3A) proved they’re a title contender with a dominant 38-0 win over New Mexico Military Institute (4-2, 2-1 District 3-3A). This win puts the undefeated Demons firmly in the conversation alongside St. Michael’s and Robertson as championship favorites in 3A.

Taos Upsets Española
The Española Sundevils (5-2, 2-2 District 1-4A) struck first, taking an early 7-0 lead in the first quarter, but the Taos Tigers (4-2, 2-1 District 1-4A) responded with a 26-yard rushing touchdown from Reggie Suazo in the final minute of the quarter. From there, the Tigers dominated, cruising to a 27-7 victory without looking back.

The Playoffs

When considering the playoffs, especially in 5A (16 teams) and 4A (15 teams), should these classifications reduce the number of teams that qualify for the postseason? Or should every team get in, giving all teams one more game in a playoff atmosphere? Or should there be limits?

For example, if a classification has 13-17 teams, only 8 teams make the playoffs; for 18-20 teams, 10 make the playoffs; and for classifications with more than 21 teams, 12 qualify. What are your thoughts?

NMPreps Week 7 Friday Night New Mexico High School Football Preview and Predictions

It’s Friday night in New Mexico, and we’re officially in the heart of district play! With playoff hopes hanging in the balance, we take a look at the key matchups across the state, highlighting the teams battling for postseason positioning.

Albuquerque (4-1) at Los Lunas (3-1), 7 PM

  • Los Lunas -14.5
Playoff hopes are on the line in this crucial District 2-6A game. Both Albuquerque and Los Lunas are averaging 27 points per game, with standout quarterbacks Isaac Houlihan for Albuquerque and Kaiden Reese for Los Lunas leading the charge. Expect a competitive matchup with the Tigers pulling away in the second half.
Prediction: Los Lunas 26, Albuquerque 15

Atrisco Heritage (1-4) at West Mesa (2-3), 7 PM

  • West Mesa -10.5
This matchup features two teams looking to break out of mid-season struggles. West Mesa averages 26 points per game, while Atrisco Heritage isn’t far behind at 25 points. The Jaguars are led by Tatum Garcia on defense, while West Mesa’s balanced offensive attack should keep them ahead.
Prediction: West Mesa 25, Atrisco Heritage 13

Aztec (0-5) at Moriarty (2-3), 6 PM

  • Moriarty -33.5
The Aztec Tigers have struggled all season, managing just 28 total points (5.6 ppg). Moriarty's run-first offense should dominate this game.
    Prediction: Moriarty 34, Aztec 0

Capitan (0-4) at Santa Rosa (2-3), 7 PM

  • Santa Rosa -40
Capitan is in rebuilding mode, while Santa Rosa looks to get back on track in district play.
Prediction: Santa Rosa 45, Capitan 7

Carrizozo (0-4) at Hondo Valley (1-3), 7 PM

  • Hondo Valley -12.5
In a battle of small schools, Hondo Valley has the slight edge with their defense making key stops.
Prediction: Hondo Valley 22, Carrizozo 10

Chaparral (2-4) at Valencia (4-2), 7 PM

  • Valencia -12.5
Both teams lean heavily on their rushing attack, but the edge goes to Valencia, who is vying for a top-8 playoff seed. Chaparral’s Manny Rodriguez has been a defensive standout, but Valencia’s seniors Dalton Muzzy, Aiden Gonzalez, and Case Ash should anchor their defense in this one.
    Prediction: Valencia 22, Chaparral 14

Cibola (2-3) at Rio Rancho (3-2), 7 PM

  • Rio Rancho -15.5
Rio Rancho's offense, led by versatile athlete Micah Takahashi, has been electric, averaging 36 points per game. Expect him to be the difference-maker again.
Prediction: Rio Rancho 36, Cibola 14

Clovis (0-5) at Las Cruces (4-2), 7 PM

  • Las Cruces -50
Las Cruces is a top-five team in New Mexico, while Clovis is struggling through a complete rebuild. Expect the Bulldawgs to control this one early.
Prediction: Las Cruces 50, Clovis 0

Dexter (6-0) at NMMI (4-1), 7 PM

  • Dexter -8.5
One of the must-watch games of the week in 3A football. Dexter’s CJ Granados and NMMI’s Cole Seidenberger are both potential 3A Player of the Year candidates. This matchup could be a district championship preview.
    Prediction: Dexter 43, NMMI 36

Farmington (3-2) at Cleveland (4-1), 7 PM

  • Cleveland -12.5
Farmington faces their second top-ranked team in two weeks, having fallen to La Cueva in Week 5. Cleveland, ranked third in the state, will look to start district play with a strong showing.
    Prediction: Cleveland 44, Farmington 17
Gadsden (5-1) at Roswell (4-1), 7pm
  • Line: Roswell -12.5
Are the Coyotes still a favorite to win it all in 5A football? Roswell has consistently proven they’re a top contender, but the Gadsden Panthers are hoping to change that narrative. Alfredo Andrade has been a beast on offense, while Daan Cano leads the defense. The Panthers are hungry to take another huge leap forward and pull off an upset that would shock the state.
    Prediction: Roswell 32, Gadsden 21

Goddard (2-4) at Deming (4-2), 7pm

  • Line: Deming -6.5
The Goddard Rockets may be in rebuild mode, but they’re still fighting to stay competitive this season. Deming, on the other hand, has a rising star in Ryan Alfaro. The Wildcats' dual-threat QB is looking to make a statement tonight, potentially playing himself into the conversation for postseason accolades.
    Prediction: Deming 26, Goddard 20

Los Alamos (3-3) at Belen (2-3), 7pm

  • Line: Los Alamos -10.5
This game is on our radar as Los Alamos has quietly climbed back up the charts. After a disastrous 0-3 start to the season, they’ve turned the corner and now sit atop District 1-5A. On the other hand, Belen has been widely inconsistent, so don’t be shocked if they pull off a surprise win. For Los Alamos, keep an eye on QB Kyle Evenhus, who has been leading an offense that’s come alive lately, pouring in points.
Prediction: Los Alamos 34, Belen 24

Mayfield (2-4) at Lovington (5-1), 6 PM

  • Lovington -33.5
Lovington looks to bounce back after their first loss of the season. Look for their electric offense, led by RB Ondalis Cardenas, despite being a pass heavy program, to shine against Mayfield.
    Prediction: Lovington 43, Mayfield 14

Organ Mountain (2-4) at Carlsbad (3-3), 7pm

  • Line: Carlsbad -10.5
This game could be the difference between making the playoffs or sitting at home all of November. Organ Mountain has shown improvement, but Carlsbad seems to be a year ahead in their rebuild. The Cavemen are led by standout QB Kason Perez, who’s been racking up passing yards and will likely be the X-factor in this matchup. In high-leverage moments, Perez's playmaking ability could make all the difference.
Prediction: Carlsbad 28, Organ Mountain 14

Portales (3-3) at Silver (2-4), 7 PM

  • Portales -18.5
Despite a challenging start to the season, Portales has rebounded and remains a playoff contender. Their defense, led by Manny Chavez and Slade Segovia, should be enough to hold off Silver. Despite a crazy 6 hour bus drive for a district game.
    Prediction: Portales 32, Silver 10

Rio Grande (0-5) at Del Norte (0-6), 7 PM

  • Rio Grande -3.5
In a matchup between two struggling programs, someone will finally get their first win of the season.
Prediction: Rio Grande 12, Del Norte 6

Valley (1-5) at Capital (2-4), 7pm

  • Line: Capital -12.5
Capital has shown flashes of potential this season, and they’ll look to build on that with a win over Valley. Expect Capital’s defense to make the difference in this one.
    Prediction: Capital 21, Valley 10

Volcano Vista (4-1) at Piedra Vista (1-4), 7 PM

  • Volcano Vista -20.5
Volcano Vista continues their strong season with a road trip to Piedra Vista, where they’ll look to secure another dominant victory.
Prediction: Volcano Vista 38, Piedra Vista 14
With district races heating up, Week 7 is bound to shape the landscape of New Mexico high school football as we march toward the playoffs. Stay tuned for the action!

Albuquerque Academy Chargers vs. St. Pius X Sartans, 7PM

In a pivotal Week 7 matchup, the Albuquerque Academy Chargers (2-3) take on the St. Pius X Sartans (3-2) in a battle that could define their respective seasons. Both teams are looking to gain momentum as they navigate district play, with the Sartans holding the edge in district record at 1-0, while the Chargers are 0-1 in district competition.

Albuquerque Academy Chargers (2-3, 0-1 District)

The Chargers have had an up-and-down season, coming into this game with a 2-3 overall record and a 0-1 district start. Offensively, the Chargers average 30 points per game, led by quarterback William Braun, who’s been lighting it up with 269.6 passing yards per game. Braun’s primary target, Gage Conway, averages 101.8 receiving yards per game, making the duo one of the most dangerous passing combinations in their class. However, the rushing game has been less effective, as Zachary Waghorn leads with just 27.3 rushing yards per game. Waghorn, however, contributes heavily on defense, leading the team with 12.8 tackles per game and recording 0.8 sacks per game. The Chargers’ defense, while solid at times, has allowed 140 points this season. They'll need to tighten up against a balanced St. Pius X offense.

St. Pius X Sartans (3-2, 1-0 District)

St. Pius X has enjoyed a strong season, especially at home, where they are undefeated (3-0). The Sartans are led by quarterback Isaiah Carpenter, who averages 209.0 passing yards per game. Carpenter’s dual-threat capability allows him to accumulate 221.8 total yards per game. Running back Hershul Olloway Jr. has been a force on the ground, averaging 110.2 rushing yards per game, which adds a balanced attack to the Sartans' offensive scheme. On the receiving end, Cayl Cox-Liggins has been Carpenter’s most consistent target, with 76.0 receiving yards per game. Defensively, Joaquin Aragon leads the Sartans with 7.8 tackles per game, while Jax Mulville adds pressure with 0.8 sacks per game. The Sartans defense has allowed 139 points this season, a number they’ll look to improve upon against Albuquerque Academy.

Key Matchups:

  • William Braun vs. St. Pius X Secondary: Braun’s ability to air it out will test the Sartans' secondary, especially when targeting Conway. St. Pius X will need to limit big plays through the air to avoid getting into a shootout.
  • Hershul Olloway Jr. vs. Albuquerque Academy Front Seven: Olloway’s 110.2 rushing yards per game are crucial for St. Pius X to control the clock and keep Braun and the Chargers' offense off the field. Albuquerque Academy’s defense will need to focus on containing him.

Final Thoughts:

This game features two offenses capable of putting up points, but St. Pius X’s balanced attack gives them an edge. If Albuquerque Academy can find success through the air early and tighten up their run defense, they could make it a competitive game. However, the Sartans' home dominance and strong running game may be too much for the Chargers to overcome.

Prediction: St. Pius X 31, Albuquerque Academy 21.

Artesia Bulldogs vs Santa Teresa Desert Warriors

As we head into Week 7 of the New Mexico high school football season, the Artesia Bulldogs (4-2) will take on the Santa Teresa Desert Warriors (1-5) in what looks to be a decisive matchup in Class 5A. This game pits two teams with vastly different seasons, and the Bulldogs are entering as heavy favorites.

Artesia Bulldogs (4-2, 3-0 District)

Artesia, known for its high-powered offense, has dominated district play with an unblemished 3-0 record. Coming into this game with a 4-2 overall record, the Bulldogs are on a roll, especially on their home turf (3-0). They’ve racked up an impressive 301 points this season, averaging 50.2 points per game, making them one of the highest-scoring teams in Class 5A. Quarterback Izac Cazares has been the engine of the Bulldogs' offense, averaging 302.4 passing yards per game and accumulating over 350 total yards per contest. Wide receiver Ethan Conn has been a reliable target, averaging 113.6 receiving yards per game. On the ground, Frankie Galindo leads the rushing attack with 71.2 yards per game, providing balance to the potent air attack. Defensively, Miguel Soto anchors the team with 9.5 tackles per game, and Kaden Grantham adds pressure in the trenches with 0.6 sacks per game. The Bulldogs’ defense is aggressive, and they’ll look to shut down Santa Teresa early.

Santa Teresa Desert Warriors (1-5, 0-3 District)

Santa Teresa has struggled throughout the season, with their only win coming at home. The Desert Warriors have been outmatched in district play, going 0-3, and they’ve struggled on the road (0-3). Offensively, they’ve managed just 41 points all season, averaging 6.8 points per game. Their offense revolves around quarterback Nicholas Vierra, who averages 224.8 total yards per game, including 123.5 passing yards. Vierra also leads the rushing attack with 101.3 yards per game, making him a dual-threat weapon. The Desert Warriors' defense has had difficulty containing opponents, allowing 214 points this season. Jacob Martinez leads the defense with 8.0 tackles per game, while Matthew Ramirez has contributed with 0.3 sacks per game. Santa Teresa will need to step up their game in all phases if they hope to keep up with the high-flying Artesia offense.

Key Matchups:

  • Izac Cazares vs. Santa Teresa Secondary: Cazares’ ability to spread the ball around will challenge the Desert Warriors' defense, which has struggled to defend the pass this season.
  • Nicholas Vierra vs. Artesia Front Seven: Vierra’s dual-threat capabilities are Santa Teresa’s best chance to keep this game competitive, but Artesia’s front seven will look to pressure him into making mistakes.

Final Thoughts:

Artesia enters this matchup as a clear favorite and will look to continue their dominance in district play. Santa Teresa, while facing long odds, will need a strong performance from Vierra and their defense to avoid another lopsided defeat. If Artesia’s offense gets going early, this one could get out of hand fast.

Prediction: Artesia 55, Santa Teresa 7.

Centennial Hawks (5-0) at Alamogordo Tigers (1-5)

The undefeated Centennial Hawks travel to Alamogordo to face the struggling Tigers in a district showdown. While the Hawks are riding high with a perfect 5-0 record, Alamogordo is looking to rebound from a tough start to their season with just one win in six games.

Centennial Hawks (5-0, 1-0 District)

Centennial comes into this matchup with an explosive offense and a defense that has allowed only 134 points in five games. The Hawks have been dominating on the ground, averaging a staggering 346.4 rushing yards per game, led by standout quarterback Zaiden Davis, who also adds 82.6 passing yards per game. Davis is the centerpiece of Centennial’s offense, averaging 233.0 total yards per game and 17.0 points per game. Centennial’s rushing attack is complemented by a solid passing game, making them a balanced and dangerous team. Defensively, they’ve been strong as well, averaging 52.0 tackles per game, with Cesario Pina leading the way at 7.0 tackles per game. The Hawks will look to continue their dominance on both sides of the ball and remain undefeated.

Alamogordo Tigers (1-5, 0-2 District)

Alamogordo has had a rough start to the 2024 season, sitting at 1-5 and winless in district play. The Tigers’ offense, led by dual-threat quarterback Nathanael Best, has struggled to score consistently, averaging just 20.5 points per game. Best, who leads the team with 103.2 rushing yards and 60.0 passing yards per game, will need a breakout performance to give the Tigers a chance against a high-powered Centennial team. Defensively, the Tigers have had their moments, averaging 49.3 tackles per game, with Noel Garza leading the team with 8.4 tackles per game. However, their defense will be put to the test against Centennial’s high-powered offense, as Alamogordo has allowed 202 points over their first six games.

Key Matchups:

  • Zaiden Davis vs. Alamogordo Defense: Davis has been nearly unstoppable this season, both on the ground and through the air. The Tigers will need to find a way to contain him or risk being overrun by Centennial’s potent offense.

Final Thoughts:

Centennial comes into this game as heavy favorites, and with good reason. Their dominant rushing attack and strong defense make them one of the top teams in the state. Alamogordo will need their best game of the season to keep this one competitive, but Centennial’s depth and talent are likely too much for the Tigers to handle.

Prediction: Centennial 52, Alamogordo 14.

Pojoaque Valley Elks (4-1) at Robertson Cardinals (6-0)

This highly anticipated Week 7 matchup features the Pojoaque Valley Elks (4-1) traveling to take on the unbeaten Robertson Cardinals (6-0) in what promises to be a pivotal game for both teams. With Robertson dominating all season and Pojoaque Valley riding high on their strong start, this clash will likely have a significant impact on district standings.

Pojoaque Valley Elks (4-1)

The Elks enter the game with a solid 4-1 record, having posted an impressive 169 points while allowing only 73 across their five games. Offensively, they average 33.8 points per game, and their ground attack has been their strength. Running back Jonah Villegas leads the way with 122.5 rushing yards per game, accounting for most of the Elks’ 259.2 rushing yards per contest. Pojoaque Valley’s passing game, however, remains a work in progress, with quarterback Joshua Gonzales averaging just 33.0 passing yards per game. This imbalance might be something they need to address against a Robertson defense that allows only 59 points all season. Defensively, the Elks' ability to pressure opposing quarterbacks has been modest, averaging 1.2 sacks per game.

Robertson Cardinals (6-0)

The Cardinals have been nearly unstoppable this season, with an unblemished 6-0 record. They’ve dominated both sides of the ball, outscoring their opponents 322 to 59, and they are averaging a whopping 52.5 points per game. Led by dual-threat quarterback Jesse James Gonzalez, who averages 201.0 passing yards and 99.2 rushing yards per game, the Cardinals' offense is explosive and difficult to contain. Nathaniel Gonzalez has been his favorite target, averaging 100.0 receiving yards per game, adding depth to their potent passing attack. On defense, Robertson has been rock solid, allowing just 9.8 points per game. Paul Duran leads the Cardinals with 8.0 tackles per game, while Corey Gonzales has contributed 0.6 sacks per game. Their ability to control the line of scrimmage and limit big plays will be critical in this matchup.

Key Matchups:

  • Jonah Villegas vs. Robertson Front Seven: Villegas has been the engine behind Pojoaque Valley’s offense. If the Elks want to keep pace with Robertson, Villegas will need to find success on the ground. However, he faces a tough task against a Robertson defense that has been stout against the run.
  • Jesse James Gonzalez vs. Pojoaque Valley Secondary: Gonzalez’s ability to hurt teams through the air and on the ground makes him a matchup nightmare. Pojoaque Valley’s secondary, which hasn’t been heavily tested this season, will have to play its best game to slow down the Cardinals’ explosive passing attack.

Final Thoughts:

Pojoaque Valley will look to control the tempo with their rushing attack, hoping to keep Robertson’s offense off the field as much as possible. However, the Cardinals have proven they can score in bunches and have been relentless on both sides of the ball. If the Elks struggle to contain Jesse James Gonzalez, it could be a long night for Pojoaque Valley.

Prediction: Robertson 45, Pojoaque Valley 17.

Raton Tigers (2-3) at Legacy Academy Silverbacks (5-0)

In a critical Week 7 matchup, two newly classified 2A programs face off with major playoff implications on the line. The Raton Tigers, a former 3A program, travel to Albuquerque to take on the undefeated Legacy Academy Silverbacks, who are making waves in their first season up from 8-man football. Both teams are looking to secure a top-four seed in the 2024 playoffs, and this game could be pivotal for both squads.

Raton Tigers (2-3)

Raton’s transition to 2A has been marked by an up-and-down season so far, with a 2-3 record. The Tigers have faced tough competition but managed to score 116 points while allowing 147. Offensively, they rely heavily on the play of dual-threat quarterback Cannon Walton, who leads the team with 105.0 rushing yards and 80.0 passing yards per game. Walton’s ability to make plays with his legs has been key, but the Tigers will need more consistency in the passing game to keep up with high-scoring teams like Legacy Academy. Raton’s defense has struggled at times, giving up 23.2 points per game. With just 0.8 sacks per game and 47.4 tackles per game, they’ll need to find a way to put more pressure on Legacy Academy’s potent offense, especially quarterback Lorenzo Sedillo-Urban.

Legacy Academy Silverbacks (5-0)

Legacy Academy has been the surprise of 2A football, dominating opponents with a perfect 5-0 record. Their offensive firepower has been unmatched, as the Silverbacks average a staggering 46.2 points per game while allowing only 4.6 points per contest. Quarterback Lorenzo Sedillo-Urban is the focal point of the offense, throwing for 190.0 yards per game and contributing 222.6 total yards per game. His favorite target, wide receiver Bryant Scales, averages 57.0 receiving yards per game, while running back Noah Sanchez adds balance with 68.6 rushing yards per game. On defense, Legacy Academy has been just as impressive, averaging 2.6 sacks per game, led by Zachary Perea, and 54.0 tackles per game, with Xander Chavez pacing the unit at 8.0 tackles per game. Their ability to dominate the line of scrimmage will be key in slowing down Walton and the Raton offense.

Key Matchups:

  • Cannon Walton vs. Legacy Academy Defense: Walton’s ability to extend plays with his legs makes him dangerous, but Legacy’s defense, which has been outstanding at limiting big plays, will look to neutralize his impact. The key will be keeping Walton in the pocket and forcing him to throw.
  • Legacy Academy’s Passing Game vs. Raton Secondary: With Sedillo-Urban averaging nearly 200 passing yards per game, Raton’s secondary will have its hands full. The Tigers need to find a way to disrupt his rhythm, or it could be a long night.

Final Thoughts:

Legacy Academy has been rolling through its schedule, and their balanced offensive attack should continue to thrive in this matchup. Raton will need a huge game from Walton and will have to play their best game of the season defensively to pull off the upset. However, Legacy’s strong defensive line and explosive offense give them the edge.

Prediction: Legacy Academy 38, Raton 24.
