Week 6: Most Intriguing Score from Friday Night

Big Three From Friday Night

1. 5A is going to be battle...and really fun to watch during the playoffs: Los Lunas (17-14 over Goddard) and Roswell (29-21 over Mayfield) answered some big calls on Friday night. The Tigers beating title favorite Goddard at home in a close battle is a resume win for one of the top two seeds in the bracket. Roswell, we felt that they were turning a corner, turned a big one as Lynn doing what he does best - win. Watch out for that district too.

2. We will have a new top team in 4A rankings: The Valencia Jaguars, ranked 12th (NMPreps poll) upset No. 1 Bloomfield, 34-21. The Jaguars with perhaps the biggest win over the night not only secured a playoff spot are making others take a second look as possible DC's. Maybe, that is a little too far or is it? Taos over Bernalillo, 14-7 and Santa Fe Indian 24-14 over Espanola Valley are nice wins too.

3. La Cueva the favorite in District 2 (6A): The Bears with a win over Clovis, 55-13. The Bears and Eldorado are on a course for a DC championship/rivalry game. This one should have a packed crowd. Is Clovis on the verge of being an OUT team in the playoff watch?

*****Week 6 Pick 'Em Challenge*****

La Cueva (4-1) at Clovis (0-3), +250 (Clovis is the upset +375)
Mayfield (2-3) at Roswell (1-4), +300 either way
Lovington (3-2) at Artesia (3-2), +250 (Lovington is the upset +350)
Goddard (4-0) at Los Lunas (5-0), +400 either way
Texico (1-3) at Eunice (3-1), +250 (Texico is the upset +350)
Socorro (5-0) at St. Michael's (3-1), +250 (St. Mikes is the upset +350)

Biggest Questions for Teams Entering Week 6

It's Cleveland and Rio Rancho and then a HUGE gap with the rest of the rankings. Who is the next 6A title contender (if we can say contender)? - Answer: La Cueva - No. 5. Yes, the Bears lost in week 2 to Rio Rancho (No. 2) but now three wins in a row and they have quietly gone in the shadow of those City of Vision teams. The Bears defense has only allowed 26 points in those three games, two of which were ranked teams. It will be difficult to erase a 50-point loss from our memory but the playoffs bring a little different flavor.

Right now the rankings go - Farmington, Goddard, and Los Lunas. How do we really feel about the three teams? Answer - My preseason pick to win state was Goddard. I still feel that way by a hair over Farmington with Los Lunas a close three. Today, I am saying that two of these three will play in the state championship - what a stretch Grine! I know! (haha) I remember watching the last time Farmington and Goddard played for the SC. This one should bring more scoring but you can bet that I will be there for it again. Artesia and Mayfield (and 1-4 Roswell) are the next three and one will make out the semi-finals, I would beat Roswell or Mayfield.

What top-20 team loses this week as a favorite? Answer - I make the rules so I won't have a true answer however, keep in mind I did see two of them happening last week. Socorro, this is not the kiss of death but you are my most likely pick this week. Also yes this St. Michael's (3-1) team is not the same as the preseason squad we really liked with quarterback Lucas Coriz but this one is the most likely to upset of the scheduled games. If anything, it will be a very good one.

St. Michael's over Socorro

Confidence level in any of these happening is unlikely but in the case of of the feature of most likely (I know) these are our four picks. Four always from the Top-20 and one classification game. The lines will be close and of all the games these four would be the closest. We seen two of them last week of unranked teams taking out a rank. Will any of these happen today? Also, Clovis back to football this week?

Team Rankings 5A Basketball: Preseason Rankings for the 2022 Season

5A Preseason Team Rankings for the 2021/2022 Season

NMPreps way-too-early team rankings for the 2021/2022 New Mexico high school basketball season. #nmpres

(25) CENTENNIAL HAWKS
2021 Record: 3-9 overall, 3-9 district
Scoop: The goods news moving forward with the Centennial Hawks is that the team will have 11 returning players from last season. Third year head coach Johnathan Martinez should see an improvement this season but will battle again in a tough district. Jeven Beltran (2022) will be three year player.

(26) GADSDEN PANTHERS
2021 Record: 2-8 overall, 2-8 district
Scoop: The Panthers experienced 15-wins and finished above .500 in 2019/2020 but those years are far and few. It could be a few more years until we see another Panther team in the inside the top 20 of the classification. Anthony Lara (2022) was a player that contributed to the Panthers as a sophomore during the 15-win season and will be a go-to player again this season. Along with Lara Ivan Apodaca (2022) played a big role for the Panthers last season and will team up with the 6-foot-2 Lara to get the Panthers back on the winning side. Look for three-year letterman Damian Barreras to also contribute to the Panthers squad this year.

(27) RIO GRANDE RAVENS
2021 Record: 0-10 overall, 0-10 district
Scoop: It has been several years since the Ravens were out of the cellar of the classification. They have also been out of the Top-20 (overall in the state) rankings for a few years now. The road ahead doesn't look much brighter as they are coming off an 0-10 season; The last time they had a winning season was 2015--2016 under former head coach Sean Jimenez (now at Cleveland) since then this is the trend - 6-19 (2017), 6-19 (2018), 8-17 (2019), 3-23 (2020) and as mentioned 0-10 in 2021. It is not all doom and gloom though and not to be lost in the shuffle is 6-foot-2 prospect Jonah Lopez (2023) who could be among the best of them in 2023. Hopefully, we get more information on him moving forward as the Ravens will look to him to take them back into the winning ways.

(28) PIEDRA VISTA PANTHERS
2021 Record: 0-11 overall, 0-9 in district
Scoop: The Panthers struggled last season and fell to 0-11 on the short season. The Panthers are 14-41 as they enter year four under head coach Brady Rivers. The Panthers are one of the smaller basketball enrollment schools and it has been a battle on the court with a strong district. The alignment for hoops doesn't help many schools and it shows here with the Panthers. Things could continue in the cellar for the Panthers as they graduate 8-players from last season. John Dekay (2022) and Nathan Heidke (2022) look to carry them forward this season as three-year lettermen.
