Games Needed Thread

It's April, so it's time to fill games that were dropped for various reasons (moving to 8-man, not wanting to get our ass whipped by Portales, etc.).

That being said, Cobre is looking for a game either week 5 or week 7. They originially had Lordsburg scheduled, but I'm now hearing Lordsburg is going to try to play 8-man. Email Coach Martinez at cobrefootball@outlook.com, if interested.

Daily Dimes - Thursday, April 22nd

What happened last night, Wednesday...... In 5A basketball the hottest team in the classification in terms of earning a state tournament bid, the Atrisco Heritage Jaguars, continues their winning ways with a win, 58-54. Another big win last night was Los Lunas beating Santa Fe, 67-51 and moving into the top spot in District 5-5A. Is Santa Fe on the outside now?

Dude from last night.... The big Los Lunas win last night was led by senior Josiah Navarro putting in big-time numbers - 25 points, 8 rebounds, and 6 assists.

Wednesday, April 22
Atrisco Heritage 58, Rio Rancho 54
Bosque 81, Cuba 47
Crownpoint 62, Zuni 48
Farmington 53, Piedra Vista 31
Hondo Valley 58, Alamo Navajo 40
Los Lunas 67, Santa Fe 51
Manzano 69, Rio Grande 59
Rehoboth Christian 68, Navajo Pine 29
Robertson 65, Raton 44
Santa Teresa 73, Ruidoso 60
St. Michael's 56, West Las Vegas 55
Volcano Vista 54, Cibola 46

What to Watch tonight, Thursday.....

5A basketball doesn't have much excitement when thinking postseason. Most games tonight are of teams that sit on the outside of the state tournament. Deming (2-6) could be a spoiler if they upset Alamogordo (7-1) or West Mesa (1-3) with La Cueva (5-0) but that's as likely as me running a mile (shoot at this point walking a mile, not happening).

4A hoops tonight has the intrigue folks. No. 4 (NMPreps Rankings) Kirtland Central will travel to Gallup (No. 5) with hopes of not only locking up the district championship but possibly the 1-seed in the 4A state tournament. If Gallup wants to win the DC they need to beat Kirtland by 5 or more. St. Pius X (3-4) technically still a bubble team will need to avoid another upset loss, this time they face Valencia (3-5). Espanola Valley (5-3) and Los Alamos (6-2) will do some work tonight in what could be another unofficial DC; Los Alamos would have to win by 22-points though after being beat by 21-points on April 10th at Espanola.

3A doesn't have a lot in terms of bids or bubbles but NMMI (5-3) and Tularosa (6-1) could be a playoff seed game. In 2A hoops Texico (4-2) and Santa Rosa (7-1) square off and this could be a game between playoff teams.

Daily Dimes: What to Watch on Wednesday, April 21st

April 21st - Daily Dimes

St. Michael's (4-2) travel to West Las Vegas (5-3) in a state tournament bid game. The winner keeps their post-season hopes alive, the loser is out.

Chaparral (4-3) at Silver (4-3) is shaping up to be for the district championship as both teams sit at 2-0 in district play. This is a one-bid league and the winner keeps the hopes alive be we still have one round of district play to go.

Santa Fe (6-2) at Los Lunas (5-1). The second battle between these two. This time we are expecting a closer game without a re-schedule situation. The Los Lunas Tigers are fighting for a playoff bid, Santa Fe currently holding the golden ticket for this district.

District 1-5A: Atrisco Heritage (5-2, 4-1) at Rio Rancho (5-3, 1-3); Volcano Vista (3-4, 1-4) at Cibola (2-4, 1-4). The team to lose the most would be Volcano Vista believe it or not. Yes, Atrisco is on the bubble and barely on it but Volcano Vista could still pull off a bid if they can win out. A loss tonight pops the bubble for the Hawks, Atrisco is the hottest team right now and should roll but this district always loves to go against the grain.

Daily Dimes: Tuesday, April 20th

Key Games to Watch Tonight, Ranked
  1. Del Norte (4-1) at Bernalillo (7-1)
  2. Mescalero Apache (5-1) at Tularosa (6-0)
  3. Mayfield (3-3) at Alamogordo (6-1)
  4. Socorro (2-1) at Hot Springs (5-1)
  5. Carlsbad (3-3) at Hobbs (5-1)
  6. Artesia (5-3) at Goddard (3-5)
  7. Clovis (5-3) at Roswell (7-1)
Del Norte and Bernalillo going for the DC in district 6-4A. If Bernalillo wins they would be a couple of games ahead to win the regular season. Del Norte win forces a tie.

Mescalero Apache has been sneaky good in 2A hoops and they get a big test against Tularosa tonight.

Alamogordo is on the wrong side of the bubble at the moment and can't afford a slip-up and Mayfield, at moments, looks like a team ready to make a run.

  13. Cleveland Storm (6-2 overall, 3-2 district)
  14. Kirtland Central Broncos (3-1 overall, 2-1 district)
  15. Albuquerque Bulldogs (4-1 overall, 4-1 district)
  16. Portales Rams (4-1 overall, 2-0 district)

  19. Hope Christian Huskies (6-1 overall, 4-0 district)
  20. Bernalillo Spartans (7-1 overall, 3-1 district)

5A BASKETBALL
  1. Hobbs Eagles (6-0 overall, 2-0 district)
  2. Volcano Vista Hawks (7-0 overall, 5-0 district)
  3. Centennial Hawks (7-0 overall, 7-0 district)
  4. Los Lunas Tigers (6-1 overall, 6-0 district)
  5. Eldorado (3-1 overall, 3-1 district)
  6. La Cueva Bears (4-1 overall, 4-1 district)
  7. Sandia Matadors (4-2 overall, 4-2 district)
  8. Farmington Scorpions (6-2 overall, 4-2 district)
  9. Onate Knights (5-1 overall, 5-1 district)
  10. Mayfield Trojans (4-2 overall, 4-2 district)
Quick Scoop: Onate is the newbie in the top-10 this week for 5A hoops. They have a buzzer-beating loss to No 3 Centennial and then beat Mayfield last week. Dark Horse if I've ever seen one. Los Lunas did a leapfrog as district 2-5A plays musical chairs.

4A BASKETBALL
  1. Highland Hornets (5-1 overall, 4-0 district)
  2. Gallup Bengals (5-0 overall, 3-0 district)
  3. Kirtland Central Broncos (3-1 overall, 2-1 district)
  4. Portales Rams (4-1 overall, 2-0 district)
  5. Espanola Valley Sundevils (7-1 overall, 3-0 district)
  6. Hope Christian Huskies (6-1 overall, 4-0 district)
  7. Bernalillo Spartans (7-1 overall, 3-1 district)
  8. Goddard Rockets (4-2 overall, 1-1 district)
  9. St. Pius X Sartans (5-1 overall, 3-1 district)
  10. Miyamura Patriots (2-3 overall, 1-2 district)
Scoop: Portales falls a few spots but that loss to Hobbs shouldn't mean a thing as most or any team will lose like that to Hobbs. Gallup and Kirtland Central hanging around the 3-4 and that's a normal thing. Espanola playing well, Hope Christian takes the lead beating Bearnlillo and Goddard dropped one spot after losing to Roswell. Miyamura is the only team under .500 but looks at their schedule, three losses come to Gallup, Kirtland, and Farmington. However, now they need to take care of Shiprock and Bloomfield.

BRACKET WATCH

Automatic Bids

Cleveland (Projected Record: 12-0)
La Cueva (Projected Record: 12-0)
Las Cruces (Projected Record: 12-0)
Roswell (Projected Record: 11-1)
Los Lunas (Projected Record: 12-0)

Scoop: Five of eight bids immediately gone to DC's. Plenty of movement to take place as of today and we still need a Los Lunas-Santa Fe showdown. Today, we give the projected win to Los Lunas based on ranking only. Also, let me put this out there even though most won't read it - do I think all four go 12-0 - NO. This is just based on being the "favorite" in the rest of their games. I see a couple losing at least one game.

First Three In

Hobbs (4-1) - Ranked high in both freeman poll and NMPreps poll and although they'll drop some Roswell still very high on the chart. Hobbs if they finish as runner up will also have a quality record with a possible 10-2 record.

Alamogordo (4-1) - For NMPreps Alamogordo is the third-ranked team in the classification. However, in the freeman, they have a pretty low rating. They absolutely need to head into the post-season 10-2.

Santa Fe (5-1) - The Demons as discussed could still take an auto bid when they play Los Lunas. Today, we gave LL the nod but as of today, this is a coinflip. Possible 9-3 record going into the postseason.

First Three Out

Atrisco Heritage (2-2) - The Jaguars missing the playoffs would be a bummer and you look back to the Del Norte loss and wanting that one back criteria-wise. If they win the games they should they could be 9-3 heading into the postseason and then it could become a debate between them and Santa Fe.

Clovis (4-1) - Currently they are tied for the auto from 4-5A but we gave the nod to Roswell as of today. The issue is Clovis could also finish, and we projected that, behind Hobbs. They might head to the postseason 8-4.

Volcano Vista (3-2) - The Hawks losing to Cibola really hurt their playoff hopes. They've looked great since that point but that loss could haunt them. They take on Atrisco Heritage tonight (Wednesday, April 14th) at home and a win here will move them up and could argue with Santa Fe for that last spot. A projected record at this point is 7-5 overall.

Still in play
Sandia (2-1) - should be higher but a wait and see what happens after this week.
Capital (2-2) - Could still make a run and wouldn't count out, yet.
Mayfield (3-1) - May need to upset either Las Cruces or Alamogordo.
Rio Rancho (4-2) - Clearly behind Atrsico and Volcano but they still have six games to go.

2021 State Tournament

No. 1 Cleveland vs No. 8 Santa Fe
No. 2 Las Cruces vs No. 7 Los Lunas
No. 3 Roswell vs No. 6 Alamogordo
No. 4 La Cueva vs No. 5 Hobbs

Confidence Level: 60%.
We still have to wait on freeman to update all teams. We will then break down wins over DC's, H2H, coach poll etc. This is just a very broad first look and at only 60% confidence we can see movement happening.

FINAL CONCLUSION

Still, plenty of movement predicted at this point and there are no clear favorites of getting in or locks may be outside of Las Cruces and Cleveland as of today. Unless they have a complete letdown. This is going to make bracket watch fun from here on out.

Please feel free to post your bracket predictions.

Saturday Morning Coffee - April 17th

Top Player Performance of Week 4

Each week we track the top players of the week and get them the recognition that they deserve on a national level.

Big Gamers

Noah Reese (Goddard):
The six-foot-three junior guard went off on Friday night in a must-win game against Lovington (74-71 OT). Reese had a stat line of 36 points and 13 rebounds for the Rockets in the win. The Rockets are 2-0 in district play.

Storm Duo (Cleveland): Tre Watson (24 points) and Nate Hasberry (25 points) combined for 49 points in the win for the Cleveland Storm over Volcano Vista on Friday night. A huge win on the road for the Storm who are looking to earn a 1-seed at the state tournament and stay perfect on the season at (9-0 overall, 5-0 in district).

Colby Wade (Atrisco Heritage): Welcome newcomer, junior-center, Colby Wade who put in 29-points in a win over Cibola on Friday night. The Jaguars are in a must-win every single night and they are answering that call. They beat Cibola 63-51 to keep their post-season hopes alive.

Bracket Talk

We will take a look and give our final week four into week five revision for the bracket watch. Reminder, we have a lot of basketball to play but the window is closing with the state tournament happing the first week of May.

Automatics

Robertson with an overtime win over St. Michael's, 51-47 (OT), helps to nearly lock up the automatic bid from district 2-3A. Also, we looked at the criteria points on Friday afternoon and they could be looking at a 1-seed in the state tournament.

Fringe Teams

We mentioned Atrisco Heritage keeping their tournament hopes alive and now move onto our NMPreps Fringe. Hobbs who we will mention again keeps their playoff hopes alive and on the fringe with a win over Clovis.

Bubbles

Hobbs and Clovis are fighting for the runner-up slot, as of today, and the Eagles earned the 2-point win in this rivalry game (53-51). Roswell beat Carlsbad so right now it sits: Roswell (2-0), Hobbs (1-1), Clovis (1-1), Carlsbad (0-2). Clovis may have had the bubble pop as they still have two games with Roswell and then have to travel to Hobbs.

Volcano Vista and Cibola. The VV Hawks dropped to (3-4 overall, 1-4 in district) and Cibola (2-3 overall, 1-3 in district) place them on the bubble and this could be the wrong side of the bubble for both.

Saturday Preview

NMPreps guide to watching NM high school basketball on Saturday.

Auto Game

Los Lunas (5-0, 5-0 district) at Santa Fe (5-2, 4-1 district): The hype would have been greater had the Demons not been upset early this week by Albuquerque High. This one still has the district championship on the line, a Tiger win and it nearly locks it up behind that young roster and head coach Julian doing his magic again.

Just a Game

Hope Christain (1-5) at Bernalillo (6-1): Not much else with meaning on Saturday in 4A hoops. We picked this one because never in my career at NMPreps (circa Novmeber 2008) have we seen a Huskie team this down. The game we watched them play against Valley was the telling story. Valley, by the way, is in a must-win today against Albuquerque Academy after a three-game skid (1-3 overall).

Summer Prep

I need to know what you guys want more of on NMPreps.

We've hit it hard on sending film and the recruiting side partnering with colleges and as you've noticed we have more colleges after our NM kids. I spend hours on that part.

.However what extra can we do in 2021 that makes the site better? more interviews like this?

Centennial: Interview with Head Coach Aaron Ocampo
Hatch Valley: Interview with Head Coach Louis Howell
Sandia: Interview with Head Coach Chad Adcox

We also are going to have a daily 20 minute podcast strictly for Football. Maybe other sports.
