Feature Week 4 Friday Night Recap

No. 1 La Cueva 42, No. 18 Sandia 19

La Cueva wasted no time setting the tone in a dominant 42-19 victory over Sandia, as senior quarterback Cam Dyer launched a 71-yard touchdown pass to Cheeto Lumbrera III just 15 seconds into the game. Lumbrera had a standout performance, finishing the night with five total touchdowns—175 rushing yards and four scores on the ground, plus the long touchdown reception on the game’s first play.

Dyer was equally impressive, throwing for 312 yards, with 290 of those coming in the first half. La Cueva’s offense built an early lead, with Lumbrera adding an 11-yard touchdown run midway through the first quarter, putting the Bears ahead 14-0. Sandia struggled to keep pace, never getting closer than two scores for the remainder of the night.

With the win, the Bears improve to 3-0 overall and 1-0 in District 2-6A play, while Sandia falls to 1-3 (0-1).

No. 2 Centennial 49, No. 6 Rio Rancho 27

Second-ranked Centennial stayed perfect on Friday night, as the Hawks, with another stellar performance from senior quarterback Zaiden Davis, defeated visiting Rio Rancho at the Field of Dreams. Davis dominated the game, rushing for four of Centennial’s six touchdowns and adding a passing touchdown in the victory. The Hawks improved to 4-0 with the win, while the Rams fell to 2-2. Centennial’s offense, led by Davis, continues to be a force as they extend their unbeaten run.

No. 4 Volcano Vista 35, No. 8 West Mesa 7

At Nusenda Community Stadium, the Volcano Vista Hawks (3-1) pulled away from a 7-7 halftime tie to defeat the West Mesa Mustangs (2-1), who were coming off a bye week. Quarterback Ilijah Hansen threw two touchdown passes, while sophomore running back D’Angelo Mitchell rushed for nearly 100 yards, helping the Hawks secure the victory. The second-half surge solidified Volcano Vista’s dominance, as they continue to build momentum in the season.

No. 9 Lovington 35, No. 7 Roswell 21

Lovington jumped out to an early lead and never looked back in a 35-21 win over Roswell. The Wildcats dominated the first half, racing to a 21-0 lead by the end of the first quarter. Roswell managed to get on the board early in the second quarter with a rushing touchdown, but Lovington answered just before halftime with an 8-yard touchdown pass to extend the lead to 28-6.

In the third quarter, Lovington sealed the game with a touchdown pass putting them up 35-6. Although Roswell managed to score late, the early deficit was too much to overcome, as the Wildcats improved their record to 4-0

No. 12 Artesia 64, No. 10 Deming 27

The third-ranked Artesia Bulldogs exploded for a commanding 64-27 win over the Deming Wildcats, jumping to a 22-0 lead before the Wildcats found the end zone. Bryce Parra set the tone for Artesia early, taking the opening kickoff 91 yards to the house, and the Bulldogs never looked back.

Izac Cazares added to the momentum with a 7-yard rushing touchdown and later connected with Ethan Conn for a 36-yard score, extending the lead to 19-0 early in the second quarter. Deming finally broke through with a 38-yard run by Ryan Alfaro, but Conn quickly responded with a 75-yard kickoff return to widen Artesia’s lead to 29-6.

Deming made a push in the second half, closing the gap to 10 points on a 42-yard touchdown pass from Alfaro to Cole Donaldson, but Artesia’s offense was relentless. Cazares added another rushing touchdown, and Frankie Galindo and Grant Johnson contributed key scores to keep the Wildcats at bay.

Artesia’s defense also made its mark, with Johnson blocking a punt and recovering it for a touchdown, sealing the dominant 64-27 victory. The Bulldogs, now 2-2, will host Gadsden for their 2024 Homecoming Game next Friday at Bulldog Bowl. Deming falls to 3-1 with the loss.

No. 11 Hobbs 41, El Paso-Parkland (TX) 37

In a thrilling back-and-forth game, Hobbs held off a late surge from El Paso-Parkland to secure a 41-37 victory. Hobbs quarterback Brock Beaty had a stellar night, throwing for five touchdowns, including a pair of long bombs to his brother, Braddock Beaty. Gabriel Henry also got in on the action, catching a 40-yard touchdown early in the first quarter.

Parkland took an early lead with a safety and capitalized on a pick-six to keep the game tight, but Hobbs responded with explosive plays, including a 55-yard touchdown pass from Beaty in the third quarter. Despite Parkland's two fourth-quarter rushing touchdowns, Hobbs' defense held strong to improve to 2-2 on the season.

This victory showcased the Eagles' high-powered offense, with Beaty and his receivers leading the way to the hard-fought win.

No. 19 Carlsbad 35, No. 22 Cibola 6

Carlsbad dominated from start to finish in a 35-6 victory over Cibola, with the Cougars' lone score coming in the final two minutes of the game. The Cavemen controlled the game behind a strong performance from sophomore running back Brock Wright, who rushed for 145 yards and a touchdown, while adding 44 receiving yards and a receiving score.

Carlsbad’s quarterback passed for 170 yards and threw two touchdown passes, spreading the ball to a variety of targets. Junior Robert Castaneda hauled in 59 receiving yards, while fellow junior Eloy Lopez contributed 45 yards through the air. The Cavemen’s balanced attack proved too much for Cibola, who couldn’t find their way onto the scoreboard until late in the fourth quarter.

With this win, Carlsbad improves to 2-2, while Cibola drops to 1-3 on the season.

No. 25 Alamogordo 36, No. 17 Piedra Vista 35 (2OT)

In a thrilling double-overtime showdown, the Alamogordo Tigers rallied from a 14-point deficit in the fourth quarter to edge out Piedra Vista 36-35. The game was defined by big plays and late-game heroics, capped off by a bold 2-point conversion in the second overtime.

After a tied 14-14 score at halftime, Piedra Vista took control in the third quarter with a 5-yard rushing touchdown, followed by an 85-yard burst to extend their lead to 28-14 early in the fourth quarter. However, Alamogordo answered quickly, as Nathanael Best ripped off a 65-yard touchdown run to close the gap to 28-21.

With just a minute left in regulation, Alamogordo’s Dylan Hergenreder powered in a 3-yard touchdown to tie the game at 28-28, sending the game into overtime.

In the second overtime, Piedra Vista struck first with a 10-yard rushing touchdown to go up 35-28. But Alamogordo responded as Best found the end zone again, this time with a 5-yard touchdown pass to make it 35-34. Rather than settle for the tie, Alamogordo opted for the win, and Best delivered with a successful 2-point conversion run to seal the 36-35 victory for the Tigers.

WOW! unbelievable 3 years in a row.

Another Aztec coach put on leave on the first week of school. This really sucks for our kids. Can we not find someone to coach our team? What a joke, year after year now we have zero
for a football program. Our kids and our town deserve better than this. The dude was hired in 2023 but didn't show up until 3 weeks ago, then this crap. People say we made it to the 2nd round last year
but any quality team we played whipped us by 30 or more. What is going on here?

No. 3 Cleveland 35, No. 5 Las Cruces 25 – Final

(Field of Dreams, Las Cruces) -In a thrilling showdown at the Field of Dreams, No. 3-ranked Cleveland secured a crucial 35-25 victory over No. 5 Las Cruces, thanks to a goal-line stand at the end of the first half and a key fourth-quarter interception that set up the go-ahead touchdown.

The game saw seven lead changes, with both teams trading blows throughout the night. Las Cruces struck first, driving 57 yards in 8 plays, capped by a 6-yard rushing touchdown from running back Danny Amaro. However, Cleveland quickly responded with an 80-yard drive, highlighted by a 42-yard pass to Jacob Maldonado. Isaiah Yannis punched in a 2-yard touchdown on fourth down, giving Cleveland a 7-6 lead late in the first quarter.

Las Cruces regained the advantage when quarterback Gunnar Guardiola dumped the ball off to Amaro, who weaved through defenders for a 60-yard touchdown, giving the Bulldawgs a 13-7 lead at the end of the first quarter.

Cleveland continued to battle, as Yannis scored his second touchdown of the game in the second quarter to take a 14-13 lead. Just before halftime, Las Cruces drove to the 1-yard line, but Cleveland's defense came up with a critical stop, preserving the 14-13 lead at the break.

In the third quarter, Las Cruces mounted a clock-eating, 51-yard drive over 14 plays, retaking the lead 19-14. Cleveland responded immediately, with Juan Munoz catching a short pass and taking it 31 yards for a touchdown, reclaiming the lead at 21-19.

Las Cruces fought back again, as Amaro found the end zone for his third touchdown of the night to give the Bulldawgs a 25-21 lead early in the fourth quarter. However, Cleveland's defense stiffened, and a fourth-quarter interception on a deflected pass shifted the momentum. Yannis scored his third touchdown of the night on a 5-yard run, giving the Storm a 35-25 lead with under five minutes remaining.

With the victory, Cleveland improved to 3-1 overall on the season, while Las Cruces fell to 2-2 overall.

No. 15 Los Lunas 14, No. 13 Eldorado 6 – Final

(Wilson Stadium, Albuquerque) - In a low-scoring, penalty-laden contest at Wilson Stadium, Los Lunas edged Eldorado 14-6 to improve to 2-1 overall and 1-0 in District 2-6A. Eldorado dropped its first game of the season, falling to 2-1 overall and 0-1 in district play.

The game was dominated by defensive stops and penalties, but Los Lunas capitalized on two key plays to claim the win. The first came on a quick screen pass from junior quarterback Kaiden Reese to fellow junior Robert Pino, who broke free for a 41-yard touchdown, giving the Tigers an early lead.

Eldorado’s only score came later with 6 second left in the game, the Eagles were unable to build momentum as the Los Lunas defense held strong throughout the night. Another big play helped Los Lunas seal the victory and maintain control of the game.

Despite the limited offensive output, Los Lunas found just enough to secure the win, improving to 2-1 on the season and taking an important district victory. Eldorado will look to bounce back after their first loss as district play continues.

Gadsden 28, No. 21 Mayfield 20 – Final

District 2-5A play opened with Gadsden securing a hard-fought 28-20 victory over No. 21 Mayfield. After a scoreless first quarter, Gadsden took the lead in the second with a 27-yard rushing touchdown from Anthony Palomares, followed by a successful PAT from Daan Cano to go up 7-0.

Gadsden kept the momentum as quarterback Adrian Munoz completed a 25-yard pass to Zakk Minjarez, and later, Alfredo Andrade added a 1-yard rushing touchdown. The Panthers missed the extra point but extended their lead to 13-0. Mayfield answered with a 1-yard rushing TD, followed by a PAT to cut the deficit to 13-7.

Before halftime, Munoz connected with Christopher Orozco for a 14-yard touchdown pass, and another PAT from Cano made it 20-7 in favor of Gadsden at the break.

In the third quarter, Mayfield responded with a 34-yard rushing touchdown by Luke Linnan, closing the gap to 20-14 after the successful extra point.

Gadsden put the game out of reach in the fourth quarter with a 10-yard rushing touchdown by Andrade, followed by a two-point conversion on a pass from Munoz to Minjarez, making it 28-14. Mayfield managed a late touchdown on an 8-yard pass, but the missed PAT left them trailing 28-20.

Gadsden remained undefeated at 4-0 overall and 1-0 in District 2-5A, while Mayfield dropped to 1-3 overall and 0-1 in district play.

Belen 31, Valley 20 – Final

(Milne Stadium, Albuquerque) Belen secured their first win of the season with a 31-20 victory over Valley in District 1-5A action. Belen improved to 1-2 overall and 1-0 in district play, while Valley fell to 0-4 overall and 0-1 in the district.

Belen opened the scoring with a 1-yard rushing touchdown by Ethan Thomas midway through the first quarter to take a 7-0 lead. Valley responded with a 12-yard touchdown pass from Jose Jaramillo to Gabe Gonzales, but the missed PAT left Belen ahead 7-6 at the end of the first quarter.

In the second quarter, Jasode Harris broke free for an 81-yard rushing touchdown to extend Belen’s lead to 13-6, though the extra point was missed. Valley tied the game at 13-13 after a 14-yard rushing touchdown by Jaramillo and a successful PAT. The teams entered halftime knotted at 13.

Belen reclaimed the lead in the third quarter with a 38-yard rushing touchdown by Elijah Schaffino, making it 19-13. However, Valley fought back in the fourth quarter when Jaramillo connected with Gonzales for a 22-yard touchdown pass, giving Valley a 20-19 lead.

Belen quickly responded as Thomas threw a 19-yard touchdown pass to Logan Gonzalez to go back up 25-20. The two-point conversion attempt failed, but Schaffino sealed the game with a 2-yard rushing touchdown late in the fourth. Belen missed the final PAT, but the 31-20 scoreline held as the final.

Belen’s balanced attack helped them notch their first win of the season, while Valley continues to search for its first victory.
