Team Rankings 6A Football: Way-too-early preseason rankings

6A FOOTBALL: 2020 PRESEASON RANKINGS

The 2020 New Mexico high school football season won't officially begin until March 2021 but it's time to start debating the team rankings. Who are the favorites, contenders, and dark horses in the bunch. #nmpreps #nmprepsTop25

NO. 19 ATRISCO HERITAGE ACADEMY

Newly hired head coach Howard Knezevich knows the uphill battle he has inherited taking over the Jaguars football program, fresh off a 1-8 overall season. The schedules have yet to be released (we've tried a few times at reaching out to APS) but just looking at their district you see the likes of Cleveland, Rio Rancho, Volcano Vista and what could be a very good Cibola team. The Jaguars will battle out of the cellar with West Mesa. The Jaguars linebackers led by Christopher Rios (2021/6-foot-1) will spearhead a very underrated defense that will also feature defensive lineman Eddie Acosta (2021). The Jaguars will likely be in the 1 or 2 win column but hiring Knezevich was a great hire coming from Rio Rancho and could bring life back into the program.

NO. 18 WEST MESA MUSTANGS

Head coach Anthony Ansotigue enters year two at the helm of West Mesa High School. After going 1-9 overall (0-5 in district) in his first season the Mustangs are hoping a year will make a difference. The Mustangs, a young squad last season with only a handful of seniors could still be fighting to stay out of the cellar because of some program building that they'll still endure but they have some bright spots. From what we've heard so far the program made a great decision bringing in Ansotigue and buy in is taking off. He also returns 2022 quarterback Daniel Ayala who is looking to take on more of a leadership role this coming season. For a program that hasn't tasted the playoffs since moving into the new district (2017) they are building it the right way. Maybe a year away from getting to the 3/4 win mark but it's a start.

NO. 17 ONATE KNIGHTS

The Onate Knights have won 4-games in three years and hoping to make some strides forward. Head coach Steve Castille enters year two at the helm and looking to continue moving this program back in the right direction. The Knights turn their attention to 2022 quarterback Aiden Rosser who entered the season late but held is own to close out the season. If Rosser can develop quickly the Knights could make some huge strides forward. On defense Diego Quinonez (2021) looks to push them forward and hoping to end his Knight career on a high note. The Knights have been a program that can compete in the past and with the solid hire bringing in Castille they should get things back on the upswing but with the addition of the pandemic and building a program this could be a three-four year job to get them back into playoff talk.

NO. 16 GADSDEN PANTHERS

The Gadsden Panthers job is arguably one of the toughest jobs in New Mexico and winning only five games in as many years is an example of just how tough. The Panthers made a very good hire in Dino Facio Jr. and with us putting them 16th to start the 2020 season tells we are expecting a move forward, although this year eventually becomes a judgement free zone, for the most part, with only seven games. Yes, the Panthers graduated some important pieces from last season but the defense has some players that can fill the void. Allen Meza (2022) and Gabriel Orduno (2021/LB-TE) will be the two players to watch this coming season for the Panthers defense. Looking at the schedule for this Spring the Panthers go with five district games (Hobbs, Onate, Carlsbad, Las Cruces, Centennial) and two non-district games with their opener, Alamogordo followed by Deming.

NO. 15 ALBUQUERQUE BULLDOGS

The Albuquerque High Bulldogs are back in 6A football after spending a few years as an independent. They are coming off a 5-5 overall season and looking to compete on their return to a district. That district being with the likes of Clovis, Eldorado, La Cueva, Sandia, Manzano and Santa Fe. They bring back a junior quarterback in Daysean Fuentes (2022) who played well last season guiding the Bulldogs. He is more likely to use his legs but there is a couple times of him letting it fly down the middle. He's quick on the ground and hits the hole well, made good decisions when to handoff or when to keep it. On defense we are going to pair him with Luke Mummert (2021) and Jorge Bolivar (2021). The four sport athlete Mummert is one that we could hear plenty of this coming season, coming off a 75-tackle, 2 sack season in 2019. The Dogs are expected to battle for a win in district or is this team looking for 2/3 wins in district?

NO. 14 SANTA FE DEMONS

The Santa Fe Demons are coming off a 4-win season and looking to continue the building process of a program that once sat dormant in cellar of the state. The next task is moving up in classification to participate in 6A football. The Demons have junior quarterback Luc Jaramillo (2022) returning after a sound sophomore season. Another year under his belt should help in his development, he also rushed for nearly 300 yards last season. Martell Mora (2022) and Estevan Martinez (2022) also return in the backfield and could become a nice duo in their second season leading the way for the Demons. Matthew Maestas (2021) will anchor the defense for the Demons this coming season, he led the way with over 150 total tackles. The Demons will have their hands full moving up and playing in District Metro II but could be fighting for 2/3 wins like others.

NO. 13 MANZANO MONARCHS

The Monarchs are a few seasons removed from their 2017 State Championship and perfect season. They have gone through a transition and miss some of the talent that was displayed on that perfect team four seasons ago. The Monarchs will need to replace their quarterback again as Jace Melfi has graduated along with athlete Austin Erickson. Looking forward is answering the question of whom will be QB-1? Jared Melfi (2022), will be a junior this season and did get to throw a couple passes last season. The team was 50-50 run/pass success last season and will need to replace any back that rushed for over 100-yards. The bright spot maybe being the return of Antwaan Wilson (2021) and Napoliean Price (2021) at receiver, both around 115 yards. The defense appears to be in a transitional rebuild as well and will miss the presence of Stone Davis. Daniel Montano (2021) will be the leader along with Teasi Richardson (2021) this season.

NO. 12 CARLSBAD CAVEMEN

The Cavemen finally got over the hump last season reaching the playoffs and going over .500 for the first time under head coach Gary Bradley. The Cavemen went 6-5 overall and 3-3 in district play during the 2019 season. This is after three consecutive 4-6 seasons. Moving forward could be stepping back for the Cavemen this season. They lose arguably one of their most talented rosters that included next level players Shamar Smith, Crimson McKenzie, and Nate Najar. Who steps in at QB? Who will replace Najar at RB? The line has to replace its best player again. Could be a year of rebuild and with only a spring session of football, maybe they use it as a true rebuild for the 2021 fall season. Kyle Ramirez (DB) is a 2021 name we've heard at this point along with Stoney Trujillo (DE/2021) as players to watch on defense.

NO. 11 HOBBS EAGLES

Ken Stevens rebuilding effort at Hobbs High school is set to continue into the 2020 season with a small jump in the rankings. After finished 2-8 and missing the playoffs last season the Eagles are hoping a year under former Eunice head coach will be a difference maker. Getting to the postseason in 2020 will require a more wide receivers to emerge after graduating four of the top five reception leaders. Demitrius Frausto (2021/WR) is the name to lead the way for the receivers after grabbing 36 receptions for 435 yards and a pair of touchdowns. Also, good news for the Eagles is returning Jarren Lewis (2021) at quarterback after throwing for nearly 2,000 yards and 18 touchdowns. What gets the Eagles into state? They'll have to beat out Centennial and Carlsbad for DCRUP or even challenge district frontrunner Las Cruces.

NO. 10 SANDIA MATADORS

The Sandia Matadors are going to be improved this season. Second year head coach Chad Adcox went 3-8 and reached the state playoffs in his first season. The Matadors have plenty of talented prospects to watch this season that includes Baylor commit Sam Carrell (2021). The Matadors also feature David Mapalo (2021), Isiah Bustillos (2021), Kevin Jackson (2021), Dalton Speis (2022) that create a solid core. The Matadors finished last season as the 12-seed but have the ability to be anywhere between 7-10 this season. The district will bring some struggles at the top with La Cueva and Clovis but they could find wins against the rest - Eldorado, Albuquerque, Manzano, Santa Fe.

NO. 9 VOLCANO VISTA HAWKS

Last season's eleven victories marked the program's highest win total in program history. The Hawks also earned the 1-seed in the state playoffs for the first time in program history. The Hawks could be a surprise this high after going 11-1 last season but gone is one of the most talented rosters in program history. ATH Johnny Herrera (2021) will be one of the contributing returners this season and will have to fill big holes left behind. Newcomers Simon Gay (2021) and Kaden Valdez (2022) will both be names that grow as the season goes on. Both had over 100-yards receiving last season. The Hawks schedule has yet to be released but just looking at the five district games, out of the seven game season, the Hawks could be flirting with a projected 2-3 record.

NO. 8 CENTENNIAL HAWKS

Centennial returns after winning 10-games last season and they will have plenty of holes to fill on both sides of the ball, but coach Ocampo squad will rank once again among the top half. Athlete Karsten Rueckner (2021) is a rising prospect, and there's no shortage of hardworking talent on the Hawks roster built from day one. The Hawks will also turn to Silas Carter (2021/RB) in the backfield and 5-10 Isaac Gutierrez (2021/WR) as a target on the outside. Ruckner also anchors the defense as one of the better defensive backs in the state; he always has eyes on the quarterback with a quick reaction time to get to the ball. The big question will be filling the holes that surround the Hawks this coming season.

NO. 7 ELDORADO EAGLES

Led by one of the state's top head coaches (Charlie Dotson), a top ranked quarterback in Nick Petty (2021), and one of the most underrated powerful back in Elijah Goree (2021), the Eagles are NMPreps pick as dark horse of 6A. What is the dark horse pick of the year? Well, it's that team that could finish as a district runner up and maybe even play in the semifinals and you forget about it the following year. However, this season with our .... lawmakers deciding that we can't play a full season, they could be a team that is hurt by the chances at making a dark horse playoff run. Especially if we have less teams getting into the playoffs. So, overcoming and beating La Cueva or Clovis will be a must and of course beating the rest of the teams in their newly aligned district (Albuquerque, Manzano, Sandia and Santa Fe). Broderick Dickman (WR-CB/2021) and Xander Gibson (WR/2021) are a pair of other seniors to watch on this squad; Dickman a 6-foot-3 receiver could be a late riser. Final note: I don't think we do but if we get 6-games (in this case, all district games) Eldorado would be projected at 4-2 overall and a bubble team of getting into the playoffs - if we have 8-teams make it.

NO. 6 CIBOLA COUGARS

We've jumped on the wagon here as the Cougars have plenty of expected hype heading into the season. We continue to make the statement but head coach Roderick Williams continues to do big things at Cibola since taking over. The program, once had zero energy and sat near the bottom, some could say underachieved with the talent that went through the doors. Now even when they are supposed to be rebuilding (last season) they win 5 games and reach the playoffs. The name we should all know and one that we will follow closely the next three years is sophomore sensation quarterback Aden Chavez (2023). Chavez had a stellar season passing for nearly 1,500-yards and 13-touchdowns guiding the Cougars to the 2019 state playoffs. It was not only Chavez though as the 2019 Cougars had plenty of newcomers like Slayd Campos (2021/RB), Elijah Spalding (2021/WR), and Maverick Garcio (2022/LB). Also, mentioned in the NMPreps250 is Highland transfer Nathan Lopez (2022/K-RB) who received a handful of All-Metro awards in 2019 as a first team member. The Cougars have talent, they'll again have to battle in a tough district, the pandemic, and have plenty against them but I'm sure (if) when we play they'll be in the mix.

NO. 5 LA CUEVA BEARS

Little separates the top five teams in 6A football this coming season, so it wouldn't be a surprise to see the Bears on the final day of the season. Coach Brandon Back's squad must replace and refuel but the difference with the Bears program now is they are built to consistently to do well year in and year out. A lot will depend on new quarterback Ryan Cook (2021) taking over under center for Austin Smith who passed for 3,174 yards in 2019. The backfield is gone and name-tags are out with the transfer of Tyler Jenson to Cleveland and graduating the other backs on the roster. The Bears don't run the ball a lot but when they do they find success - thinking back to the title game in 2018. The name to watch is Cole McClain (ATH/2021) a Top-250 player in the state and Top-75 senior in New Mexico. He brings the most experience running the ball with 133-yards (5.1 per carry) with a touchdown. The player that will have most defensive teams trying to cover is 6-foot-2, wide receiver Brad Thomas (2021) which totaled for 1,235-yards and 13 receiving touchdowns last season. Thomas, a Top-35, player in New Mexico had a breakout season but will need some counterparts to take some of the looks off him as the Bears graduated 1,689 yards that includes Connor O'Toole (signed with the University of Utah; Had 21 D-1 offers). The final word: The Bears will battle in district with Clovis and much depends on the schedule but I could see the Bears going 5-1/6-1 as the first over/under type of number. That all depends on the number of games and who is going to be on the schedule.

NO. 4 RIO RANCHO RAMS

The Rams have holes to fill, a new head coach and looking to maintain being a power in 6A football. The Rams went 8-5 last season and played for the 6A state championship, falling to rival Cleveland. They also lost Isaiah Chavez at quarterback who passed for 4,000 yards and rushed for another 2,000 as a two-year starter who is fresh off a stellar start to his collegiate career at UNM guiding the Lobos to its only two wins of 2020. Also, longtime head coach David Howes who built the Rams into a power is now an assistant coach with the University of New Mexico. So, what's next? They'll turn to 2022 running back Zach Vigil who hit the scene in 2019 rushing for nearly 1,300-yards and 18-touchdowns as a sophomore. The defense will feature Jasper Pennington (2021), Lucas Lucero, Josh Howes (2021), and Tommy Lujan (2021). The defense will be the strength with a handful of retuning prospects. Also, add in Top-35 prospects Cayden Romero (OL/DL-2022) and Darrius Gregory (OL/DL-2021) and you could easily have a heavy favorite to win it all. The cherry on top? If you have to replace one of the top head coaches in the state, might as well add a National head coach of the year in Gerry Pannoni from Virginia.

No. 12 Tucumcari Rattlers

The Rattler's finished head coach Ferguson's eight season with a 1-9 record, the lone win came against Albuquerque Academy. The Rattlers needed to avoid injury last season with not much depth and youth throughout the roster. Well, that could be a positive moving forward as they will look to a top athlete in Jesus Ramos (QB/2022) returning under center. The Rattlers return some players from last season and could be a dark horse to finish anywhere from 2-4 in the four team district. Yes, I know they went 0-3 last season and outscored 133-0 in district play but something about building depth and having then sophomores, experienced, returning as juniors that could create a spark.

No. 13 Newcomb Skyhawks

After a very successful four-year run winning 33-games and two playoff wins that also included a 10-2 season (2018). Well, things could look very different as they have a new head coach and replace a handful of core players from their recent success including Deontay and Deondre Begay, they led the way in passing yards, rushing yards, and receiving yards. The Skyhawks will likely be in a rebuild altogether and could end up sitting closer to the cellar than 13th in the state. Kiyanii Natonabah (2023) earned some reps last season along with other 2022 class members in what could be a year to develop them. Yes, they make the move up to 3A football but they have played much of the competition ranked at this point. The good news for the Skyhawks? The defense returns a healthy core of players led by Marcus Jake (2022), Colby Benally (2021), and Brandon Willson (2021) that could anchor enough to keep the winning going for the Skyhawks. Final thought: The Skyhawks will look different this season and could end up going 3-0 district or 1-2 and I wouldn't be surprised.

No. 14 Santa Fe Indian Braves

The section the SFIS Braves would enter the season had we started in the Fall of 2020. The Braves coming off a 4-5 overall (0-4 district) season held their own outside of district play with a 4-1 record, the lone loss to Pojoaque Valley (4A). Devry Vigil (2021) would have returned for his senior season after tossing for over 1,000-yards as a junior in 2019. Julian Martinez (RB/2021) would have returned as a great RB option in the backfield for the Braves as well. Yes, competing in district with other 3A powers hurts the Braves overall state bids but say they linger in District 1 or 5 and they could have a few DC's. The Braves are likely to sit out in 2021 (Spring Football) due to covid but this would have been a spot to slot the Braves for the coming season.

No. 15 Tohatchi Cougars

So far we have been on a district one and district five quick ranking preview. We stay the course as the Tohatchi Cougars hit the rankings from district 1 and the projected runner up team from the district. The Cougars are coming off a 4-6 season and looking to take a leap forward this season. With the new district alignment the Cougars will have to overcome a Newcomb program that is coming off a couple really solid years but this could be a year to do it. The Cougars welcome back a handful of key players this season with the likes of DeAngelo Hunch (QB/WR-2022), Ezra Benally (RB/CB-2021), and Woodrow Long III (WR/LB-2021) creating a core that could make it a special season.

No. 16 Crownpoint Eagles

The Crownpoint Eagles went 4-6 last season and 2-2 during district play but could be on the verge of a rebuild. They could also be considered too low at 16 and should be higher near the 19 spot. The bad news: They need to replace quarterback Jesse Andis and lead receiver Corey Bell a duo that connected well last season. Most of the offensive line is gone for the new QB which could bring issues - OT Navarro Burnside (2022) will bring the experience. A returning skilled player will also be Verron Chiquito (2021/RB) who seen some action last season. The Eagles appear to be searching for an identity this coming season and could be in a cycle that has them in the bottom again. The numbers appear to be up and a young core could make them challenge for a DC again in a year if we are looking at a positive. Also, keep an eye out for Bradley Toledo (2021) who had snaps at quarterback last season.

No. 17 Zuni Thunderbirds

The Thunderbirds enter the season as a mystery but likely in a position that they will take a step back this season. The Thunderbirds are far removed from having to cancel the end of their season with lack of healthy players. They have rebuilt and become very competitive winning 5-games last season, 7-games in 2018, and 8-games in 2017. However, the trend is looking like we could be in another rebuild up the roster and depth again. They lost next level signee De'andre Sanders who is playing at Clarke University. The good news is that they return several on defense. They return Morgan Hannaweeke (2022), defensive linemen Koi Zunie (2021) and Shane Sanchez (2022) along with Arian Laate (2022) and Archie Hattie (2022) on the outside; which makes up a group of experienced juniors. On offense 6-foot-4 quarterback Kay Shekya (2022) and running back Joel Toshowana (2022) return and could be a spark.

No. 18 Navajo Prep Eagles

The Eagles finished 5-5 overall (2-1 in district) in head coach Roderick Denetso second season at the helm, but this program is on the cusp of something better with a very talented and young roster returning. The Eagles move into a new district this season with the new classification realignment for the 2020/2021 seasons'. They will now compete against Zuni, Tohatchi, and Newcomb - three teams that they've had some experience with. The Eagles beat Tohatchi, 36-20 and fell to what was one of Newcomb's best teams (rebuild likely to come). The Eagles are at the 18th spot right now but could move ahead of the rest of district 1 and 5 teams by the end of the season. Two names to know for this team come in the one-two punch of Kyler Clitso (2022/RB) and Dontrell Denetso (2022/QB) who held their own as sophomores in 2019. Ceiling could be 13/14 with a floor of 18/19; we start at the floor and only go up from here.

No. 19 Cuba Rams

The theme continues here with our 3A rankings as the Cuba Rams also representing District 5-3A. The Rams went 3-7 last season and 1-2 in district play; two wins against teams from 2A football. More bad news for the Cuba Rams will be replacing athletes Christopher Cavazos and Jeremy Segura. The bright spot returning will be Markus Ignacio (2022) who showed some signs of being the next leader for the Rams. 2022 ATH Ryan Velarde will be another player to watch on the Rams roster this season. The Rams graduated a lot of what they did last season and will likely battle with Thoreau and Wingate to stay out of the cellar.

No. 20 Thoreau Hawks

Coming from District 1-3A is the Thoreau Hawks which went 1-9 overall last season and 1-3 in district play. The lone win over the 21st ranked Wingate Bears. The Hawks relied on a senior class last season and will need to replace their quarterback, top receivers and backfield players. Lance Plummer (2021) will return for the Hawks and will need to take on a bigger role for the Hawks and he'll also guide the Hawks on defense. A win over Wingate could be the goal here for a rebuild.

No. 21 Wingate Bears

The Wingate Bears went winless in 2019 going 0-10 overall (0-4 in district) and found themselves outscored 494-68. Many of questions circling the Bears football program and looking for a way to avoid another winless campaign in 2020. They graduate 17 players from last season and a unique school like Wingate, you can have new players coming and going, especially during a year with a pandemic. Hard to pinpoint which direction they will go this season but the likelihood that they are in the cellar is high. Will they go with the only QB on the depth chart from last season in LeShane Wyaco (2023)? They've gone 1-19 the last two seasons and pending the non-district games, this could be a long Spring.

Team Rankings 4A Football: Way-too-early preseason team rankings

4A Football: Way-too-early preseason team rankings

NMPreps.com's preseason rankings for the 2020 New Mexico high school football season. We've made a few tweaks, will make more, but this is our best projection for the 2020 (played in 2021) season.

No. 12 Valencia Jaguars

Wesley Shank's rebuilding project at Valencia High School continues into year-three. The Jaguars finished 2-7 overall last season but won the final game of the season over district opponent Valley to carry them into this long off-season. Improvement in the win column for 2020 (2021 Spring) hinges on the progress of Nate Rodriguez (2022) who looks to be next in line as QB-1. They will also play in a new district with the likes of Albuquerque Academy, Bernalillo, Grants, and St. Pius X. Grants and Pius both favorites but the Jaguars could battle with Bernalillo and Academy for the third slot, which in a regular year could be a bid to state. Remember Shank did lead the Jaguars to 6-wins in his first season, and yes this year will be another rebound but the Jaguars could be a player in 2021 Fall.

No. 13 Bernalillo Spartans

The Spartans are coming off 6-wins and a hats off to head coach John Cobos who took over in 2015 and experienced a 0-9 season before the building started. One win in 2016, led to 3 in 2017, and then led to back-to-back 6-5 years in 2018 and 2019 for the Spartans. Returning would be quarterback Adam Salazar (2021) after throwing for 915 yards as a junior and rushing for another 400 yards, totaling for 11-touchdowns (9 throwing). The stud to watch on the Spartans will be NMPreps250 prospect Ayden Madrid (2021) who did it all on both ends of the ball. Madrid rushed for nearly 1,000-yards with 17 rushing touchdowns, adding 223 receiving yards (2 TDs) but the icing on the cake is leading the team in total tackles with over 170 (66 solo). The Spartans could have possibly been a an upset pick and will have some athletes in a shorten 2021 spring season. The district with Academy, Grants, St. Pius and Valencia could have had them looking to finish fourth and nibbling Valencia at 3rd.

No. 14 Espanola Valley Sundevils

The Sundevils are on to another head coach. The only question has it become official? That we don't know but word is that former Texas high school coach along with two one-year stints at Grants and Shiprock Nick Williams was the choice. The good news for whomever takes over the program is the fact that you have 6-foot-5 quarterback Ollie Fell (2021). Also, returning is Fell's top target in Matthias Garcia (2020). The Sundevils are coming off a 2-8 season and much could be becomes of the revolving head coaching door but they could still be a team fighting for a district championship in their new district with Moriarty, Pojaoque and Taos.

No. 15 Albuquerque Academy Chargers

The Albuquerque Academy Chargers will be under second year head coach Shaun Gehres who led them to a 4-6 overall record in his first season. They also take a huge leap this season returning to play in a classification after spending last season as an independent. Although they will likely be a year or two away from making the playoffs a 15-preseason ranking is a sound spot for a young roster and program that has struggled with depth in the past. Look for the quarterback AJ Rivera (2023) to return after a solid freshman season passing for 1,500-yards and 12-touchdowns. When looking at the future the Chargers have plenty of youth on the roster with the likes of Kellan Gehres (2023/WR), Mike McIntosh (2022/WR), and Tyler Wilson (2022/WR). Gehres led the way with nearly 600-yards receiving and six touchdowns.

No. 16 Pojoaque Valley Elks

The Pojoaque Valley Elks are coming off a 2-8 record season (0-5 in district) and hoping to make huge strides forward. The Elks have some key players returning that has created some excitement and used much of last season as an experience type of year. The name that most will know heading into the season is Devonn Leyba-Holmes (2021) who played well as a junior last season for the Elks. Also, returning are a pair of 2022 receivers in D'sean Martinez and Anthony Meloy-Chavez giving some options if they decide to throw the ball more this season. We've heard the argument that the Elks could be in any of the first three spots we've ranked 18, 17 or where we have them at 16; Yes, Shiprock beat them in the opener last season but looking at this season we feel they have more returning than the other two teams in Gallup and Shiprock.

No. 17 Gallup Bengals

Initially we had the Bengals a few spots higher around 14-15 but with the transition of yet another head coach, former coach Nick Winkler stepped down in July. So now the conversation will be if the Bengals can continue building and growing or will this put them back, again. After starting last season 2-1, they went on to lose the final seven games (2-8 overall). The attainable goal appeared to be 4-wins this season but now we could be looking at another 2-win type of season. Look for 6-foot-2 quarterback Kody Touchine (2022) to lead the way for the Bengals this season. Also, keep an eye on Alex Alatorre (2021) on both sides of the ball (RB/LB) to have a breakout season. The Bengals have some excitement heading into the season as Alex Rodriguez was named head coach this off-season. Rodriguez has ties to the school and provides the Bengals with what appears to be some needed stability.

No. 18 Shiprock Chieftains

Winning at Shiprock isn't easy, but head coach Anthony Clah led the Chieftains to a 5-5 season, playing an independent schedule. They return to a district in 2020 with Gallup, Kirtland Central, Miyamura, Aztec and Bloomfield. The bad news: they graduate one of their better football players in recent time in Kaleo Clah who rushed for 350 and passed for another 1,000. The good news: Andre King (2020) returns at receiver but the focus could be a wave of young defensive players returning that could be the make-up for a few years in maroon. Jayson Ayze (2020) is the anchor on that defense with 5-sacks last season.

Team Rankings 5A Football: Way-too-early preseason rankings

5A Football: Way-too-early preseason rankings

NMPreps.com's early preseason rankings before the 2020 (2021 Spring) season. The rankings will change before the Spring season.

NO. 18 CHAPARRAL LOBOS

After a 6-4 season in 2017, the Lobos have gone 1-18 in the last two seasons' including going 0-9 overall and 0-3 in district play in 2019. The Lobos struggled on both sides of the ball and appeared outmatched in each contest. If we are looking for good from last season, the Lobos gave some experience to younger prospects last season. Quarterback Peter Castro (2022) earned some experience and could be one to watch moving forward. Look for Bryan Cordero and Martin Adame to carry the Lobos this season as two experienced 2021 OL/DL prospects. New head coach Gilbert Rojas knows the uphill battle he will have this season.

NO. 17 LOS ALAMOS HILLTOPPERS

Los Alamos is a tough job and the Hilltoppers are looking to sit near the bottom 5A Football again this season. The Hilltoppers went 3-7 overall and 0-3 in district play. The three wins came against 4A opponents and depending on the new seven game schedule they could be fighting for a win with their new district of Capital, Farmington, Miyamura, and Piedra Vista. It depends on the three non-district games but this could be a long season for the green and yellow. The good news for the team is returning mobile quarterback Tyler Weiss (2021) who had over 1,000 yards - passing and rushing. Alex Chavez (2021) also returns on defense for the Hilltoppers and will look to lead a new group. The Hilltoppers won't be a 'bad' team and they will compete but the order could be too much for them.

NO. 16 VALLEY VIKINGS

Things reached a low last season for the Vikings as they went 0-10 overall and had their third season under .500 in four years. The Vikings improved throughout the season and almost won the final game of the season, 28-25 loss at Valencia. The good news for the Vikings is they had a roster that would have many of the players returning this season. Gabriel Torres (2022/QB), Jesse Murphy (2021/RB), Andrew Lopez (2021/RB) and Ian Torres (2021/WR). The district will be tough but they could compete this coming season. Belen, Del Norte, Highland, and Los Lunas will make up the district slate for the Vikings.

NO. 15 BELEN EAGLES

The Eagles are in a rebuild right now and although they we have them starting at the 15th spot in our preseason ranking they could be an early climber. They'll battle with Del Norte and Highland for position in district play along with Valley for the runner up spot to defending champ Los Lunas. The Eagles will be in year two of head coach Ty House and the Eagles are hoping for a step forward in the process. The rebuilding is real though and the Eagles will need to replace their quarterback and some key members off the defense. There seems to be enough excitement in the returning players to have the Eagles thinking about playing LL for the DC. Leading running back Anthony Roybal returns for his senior season after going for 700 yards last season in eight games. Ben Hirschfeld (2021) took several snaps under center last season and likely the replacement as quarterback in 2021. The Eagles have potential to be a 3/4 win team in the 7-game season and possibly a playoff team. 5 to 6 wins would be ideal to make the post season this year though.

NO. 14 MIYAMURA PATRIOTS

The Patriots, initially, a little lower in the rankings around 11 or 12 but with the news that top 5A ranked quarterback Cael Stewart (2022) decided to transfer to Arizona it dropped a couple slots. Stewart, as a sophomore, threw for over 1,000-yards and showed plenty of promise. The season was a mess last season with the Patriots finishing with 2-wins, their head coach getting into trouble and eventually led to him being out as head coach. Welcome, new head coach Shelby Reeves and what could be a very young and inexperienced roster. The 2019 Patriots actually had plenty of seniors taking up starting or key roles that will mean building up depth and experience. A shortened season could play into their favor for a team that needs to rebuild. Jack Dowling (2021) and Sean-Matt Garcia (2021) could be a pair of all-district wide receivers and the names to know for the Patriots.

NO. 13 SANTA TERESA DESERT WARRRIORS

After registering three consecutive winning seasons the Desert Warriors are looking to continue success after going 7-3 overall (2-1 district) during the 2019 season. The Desert Warriors fell 27-26 in the first round last season, nearly winning a playoff game. Getting back to the playoffs will require some work as the district is stronger this season with the addition of Mayfield High School, which comes down from 6A. The good news is Head coach Shae Vierra returns quarterback Matthew Lopez (2021) and after a successful season under center. Lopez rushed for 900-yards and passed for another 700-yards creating high expectations with a mobile quarterback under Vierra as of late. The cherry on top for this team? They also return 2022 running back Adrian Rodriguez who went for 1,028-yards and 5 touchdowns last season. This Desert Warriors team could be a dark horse to getting into the playoffs and winning a game but they also have some excitement from a talented 2022 group. Right now I'd buy on ST.

NMPreps 5A Way-Too-Early Team Rankings for 2021
Grine | NMPreps Site Manager

Today, we start our journey to talk about each in New Mexico high school basketball for the 2020/2021 season.

No. 20 Eldorado Eagles
Record: 7-18 overall, 1-7 district

The Eagles will be improved this coming season but the starting spot is a safe area for a team coming off 7-wins and a team that finished the season 1-12. It will be the second season under head coach Leory Barela, who took over right before the season in 2019/2020. The highlight name is in the same household as daughter CeCe Barela (2021), one of the top prospects in the state and a four year Top-50 player in New Mexico will be back for her senior campaign. The Eagles lose three starters and need to replace half of their team scoring. Ella Dion (2022) and Jaylen Jefferson (2021) look to fill voids from last season.

No. 21 Rio Rancho Rams
Record: 8-21 overall, 0-8 district

The Rio Rancho Rams took a huge step back last season only winning 8-games and finishing last in district play. However, the Rams nearly played into the state tournament winning a pair of games in the district tournament before losing in the semifinals. More news for the Rams going into the season is graduating three of their best players in Michaela Meyer, Hannah Dietz, and Kennedy Block. The Rams will not only need to replace them three but find depth from a youthful roster last season. That alone could be the upside that they are looking forward too is the best of the roster will have a few years wearing the blue, green, and white. One of those young stars will be junior Olivia Bergsten who proved she can play a big role this coming season.

No. 22 Albuquerque Bulldogs
Record: 13-15 overall, 7-3 district

The Albuquerque High Bulldogs had high expectations for the 2020 season before dropping to just under .500 at 13-15 overall last season and finishing third in the district standings. The good news for the Bulldogs is the return of leading scorer Leilani Love (2023) who is coming of stellar freshman season averaging 12 points per game and 8 rebounds. The bad news for the Bulldogs is losing six seniors from last season including Tiara Pendleton who was a near double-double player. The district just got tougher, as Los Lunas decided to join this district; the race for runner up is wide open though with the remaining teams - Santa Fe, Manzano, Capital, and Rio Grande.

No. 23 Manzano Monarchs
Record: 12-15 overall, 7-3 district

Scoop: The Manzano Monarchs and head coach Roger Williams are coming off back-to-back 12-win season and most successful runs. The bad news for the Monarchs will be Mya Williams who carried the Monarchs with 14 points, 4 assists and 4 rebounds per game. In fact five of the top six leading scorers have all graduated and will look to 2021 player Mary Jane Weaver to carry them forward. Also, 2023 player Sierra Dixon will look to be the future of the program for the next three years.

No. 24 Capital Jaguars
Record: 9-19 overall, 3-7 district

Skinny: The Capital Jaguars could be one of the more improved teams from a year ago or they could float around the same position from last season. Rebecca Sorensen (2021) and Ethena Silva (2021) both return after leading the team in scoring with 11 points per game each. They graduate some senior leadership and depth but they had enough underclassmen play minutes.

No. 25 Roswell Coyotes
Record: 7-20 overall, 0-6 district

Notes: Basketball is an interesting alignment of districts and Roswell is one of those teams hurt by playing "up" in basketball (the correct classification alignment is football and it should be for all). The Coyotes went 7-20 last season and struggled to an 0-6 season during district play. This program once a state champion has now two years of 0-12 in district play along with 13-41 overall. The good news: They only graduate four players and bring back 10 varsity roster players. They also return post player Clarissa Vega (2021) who at 6-foot could be a force inside. They need to get wins out of district play but if they can get some guard play to play with Vega this could be a year to snag a win in district play.

No. 26 Atrisco Heritage Jaguars
Record: 7-18 overall, 2-6 district

Notes: The Jaguars are coming off a 7-win season and have to replace their top two leading scorers from last season. Head coach Joe Montoya has done well in keeping this program competitive through graduating his top players from the year before. The good news for the Jaguars is their return a solid 2022 group that could have them in a better spot come the 2021/2022 season however, for this coming season they are likely in the cellar. Anaise Perez (2022) and Ayanna Taylor (2022) will have to take on a huge lead.

No. 27 Gadsden Panthers
Record: 4-21 overall, 0-12 district

Notes: Yes, the Panthers only won 4-games last season and yes they will still be building next season however, the Panthers could be a riser next season. The return leading scorer Ema Rose (2023) who is coming off a stellar freshman season. In fact the Panthers return their top five scorers from lsat season.

No. 28 Rio Grande High School
Record: 1-24 overall, 0-10 district

Notes: Head coach Ryan Noce has built programs before and you could say he is a good fit for building something (anything) at Rio Grande. The Lady Ravens program has gone through several head coaches recently, back-to-back winless seasons in 2017/2018 & 2018/2019, and a 65-game losing streak.

Note: NMPreps will continue to rank each team in 5A basketball.
