FIRST ROUND: State-ments

A few quotes from across the state.

“This is a good team, a coachable team,” Estrada said. “Just as good as the team I won state with in Tularosa. These girls respond to anything I talk to them about and they do such a good job with the mental side of it. They work hard and get the job done every time. I heard so much about what a difficult situation it was in Española, and that’s not the case. These are good girls. A very good team.”

“Well, that’s fine,” he said. “It’s like I told the kids, it doesn’t matter what time of year you play. It means you’re still playing. We’ve played pretty well in the morning in the past. When you get to this point, if you worry about what time you play, you’re worrying about the wrong thing. I’m just looking forward to getting to play again.”

“They just said, ‘You’ve got a good thing going on in Dora,’” Montoya recalled. And he happened to agree with them.

"Thank you. Have to admit it is kinda cool to reach it in the 'survive and advance' portion of the season."

"Sadly the Lady Bears season is over. The shots just didn’t fall this last month. The bears played hard every minute of every game, however. We will begin working hard immediately to make sure the shots fall next year. We will be back stronger then ever!!"

La Cueva head coach, Robert Perea via Twitter

"Calysta (Jacobs) is doing good! She's laughing and more alert. Giving her fluids! She said she's ready to come sub back in! Thank you to everyone who has text and called checking up on her!"

“Sandia is really good – they are well-coached, and they can shoot the ball,” Maya said. “I thought we could put pressure on them for 32 minutes and they would eventually get tired but to their credit, they did not. We knew at halftime that we would just have to keep pushing and that is what we did.”

“It was exciting,” Martinez said. “These are the moments you live for. You come play basketball, you don’t want a boring game. You want an exciting game because those are the games you remember for the rest of your life.”

“Silver has a scrappy team, but we prevailed with grit and heart. We play in a very tough district and we have games like this every night. Unfortunately for Silver, they haven’t had a game like this in a long time. So that was an advantage for us.

3A Semifinal Schedule Disdvantage?

I'm really huge on schedules and how coaches and teams handle it during this time of year.

Here's one to watch: 3A semifinals to championships on the 2-3 half of the bracket.

-The semifinal for the 1-seed's half is at 9:45AM on Thursday (3/14).
-The semifinal for that 2-3 side is slated for 8:15PM on Thursday (3/14).
-The championship is set for the following day at 3PM (3/15).

Feel free to share your thoughts on that.
My question for coaches or the like is how do you handle that short-rest turnaround? I'm not looking for coach talk in "you gotta tough it out/make it work" kind of spiel.

I'm asking like: Boom. Game is over, you gotta feed the kids, where do you order from? Is the food already ordered? Is it at the motel? Do you let them sleep in? What time do you wake them? Do you have a morning shoot-around session? When do you feed them lunch with game at 3PM? Do you settle for brunch?

National Combine dates

Ever wonder how a high school athlete gets a "Star" rating?

It requires getting national exposure of some kind which leads to an analyst at 247Sports (Scout.com), ESPN, or Rivals reviewing your film giving you a rating. But with literally 10's of thousands of prospects nationwide every year how can you get that exposure?

One of the primary was is to go to a national, Nike or Rivals combine. There are no coaches there, but the media and analyst flock to these events. It's similar to the NFL combine you see in the pros where they test your skills, strength and speed.

Unfortunately it requires you to travel to one of there locations... Below is are the places and dates of the BIG upcoming combines.
